• Speed up csv export when using php from mysql database query

  Ok, so i've got a web system (built on codeigniter & running on mysql) that allows people to query a database of postal address data by making selections in a series of forms until they arrive at the selection that want, pretty standard stuff. They can then buy that information and download it via that system. The queries run very fast, but when it comes to applying that query to the database,and exporting it to csv, once the datasets get to around the 30,000 record mark (each row has around 40 columns of which about 20 are all populated with on average 20 chars of data per cell) it can take 5 or so minutes to export to csv. So, my question is, what is the main cause for the slowness? Is it that the resultset of data from the query is so large, that it is running into memory issues? Therefore should i allow much more memory to the process? Or, is there a much more efficient way of exporting to csv from a mysql query that i'm not doing? Should i save the contents of the query to a temp table and simply export the temp table to csv? Or am i going about this all wrong? Also, is the fact that i'm using Codeigniters Active Record for this prohibitive due to the way that it stores the resultset? Any advice is welcome! Thank you for reading!

• Using AJAX in Rails: How do I change a button as soon as it's clicked?

  Hey! I'm teaching myself Ruby, and have been stuck on this for a couple days: I'm currently using MooTools-1.3-compat and Rails 3. I'd like to replace one button (called "Follow") with another (called "Unfollow") as soon as someone clicks on it. I'm using :remote = true and have a file ending in .js.erb that's being called...I just need help figuring out what goes in this .js file The "Follow" button is in a div with id="follow_form", but there are many buttons on the page, and they all have an id = "follow_form"...i.e. $("follow_form").set(...) replaces the first element and that's not correct. I need help replacing the button that made the call. I looked at this tutorial, but the line below doesn't work for me. Could it be because I'm using MooTools instead of Prototype? $("follow_form").update("<%= escape_javascript(render('users/unfollow')) %") ps. • Can I use a UINavigationController as the detail view of a UISplitViewController?

  I'm running into a problem with an iPad app where I would like to have UINavigationControllers in both of the views within a UISplitView. I've looked through other similar questions here, but most link to a tutorial online that doesn't completely solve the problem. Here's a 2-minute walkthrough to re-create the problem I'm having: Create a New Project in XCode, starting from the Split View-based Application template. Add the following NSLog statement as the first line within the DetailViewController's willHideViewController method: NSLog(@"toolbar: %@", toolbar); If you run the application now, the log will show that the DetailViewController's toolbar is alive and well. Now... Open MainWindow.xib and expand the SplitViewController. Drag a Navigation Controller from the library on top of the DetailViewController. Expand the new Navigation Controller and change the class of the UIViewController within to a DetailViewController. Ctrl-drag from the SplitViewController to the DetailViewController and assign it as the delegate. Save MainWindow.xib and run the app again. At this point, the detail view has a navigation bar and an empty toolbar. If you view the logs, you should find that the toolbar is null. Why is this? Am I missing some sort of connection in Interface Builder? Is the navigation bar the problem for some reason? Unlike the tutorial at http://www.cimgf.com/2010/05/24/fixing-the-uisplitviewcontroller-template/, I would like to keep both the navigation bar and the toolbar (preferably with the toolbar at the top when in portrait and not visible when in landscape), so that I still have a functional "Back" button when the iPad is in portrait orientation. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this problem? An example project with this sort of set-up would be ideal.

• Ways to prevent multiple email notification with php&mysql

  My 1st post, but i got many great answers and tips from stackoverflow so far. This one was a close call- How does facebook, gmail send the real time notification? but not exactly, so let brainstorm this together. I have CMS system with mail notification when a change is made on the site. Everything wotk very well but i want to prevent multiple notification if somene make another quick change to, let say, fix a typo. Using php mail(), obviously. I've tough of 2 ways, one simple, and one.... let just say, pretty heavy... cough. the 3rd one was inspired by Implementing Email Notification but really doesn't look appealing to me to send bunch of email at once. Use a timestamp to check if another change was made in the 'let say' last 5 minutes. Record the last change, and compare it to the new one. Could be usefull for backup at the same time since i'll have to save the change somewhere, but text can be long and making an sql search would be painfull. Wouldn't it? Use cron to send changes every x minutes... convince me if you ythink it is a suitable solution. Any ideas, comment or suggestion of your own? • Problems setting vertical scrollbar value in a datagrid (old one, not the better DataGridView).

  I need to save the selected row and the vertical scrollBar's position after a refresh. This is how I do it: int currRow = myGrid.CurrentRowIndex; int vScrollPos = ((ScrollBar)myGrid.Controls[1]).Value // some code that refreshes the data among other things myGrid.CurrentRowIndex = currRow; // this sets the property myGrid.Select(currRow); // this selects in UI (both commands required) ((ScrollBar)myGrid.Controls[1]).Value = vScrollPos; Here's my problem: The grid always jumps to a place where the selected row is at the bottom. setting the current row makes it happen - similar to EnsureVisible of newer grid implementations. But after that there's the vScrollBar repositioning - and it just doesn't work right. In debug I see that the scroll bar value gets updated. In the UI, if I hit the down/up arrow on the scrollbar it suddenly jumps to the right place - But if I don't click anything the grid is just in the wrong position. I tried refreshing the grid/scroll bar to force a redraw, but it doesn't help. The actual grid position is just not in sync with the vertical ScrollBar's value. Any ideas?

I'd like to attach this string to an html element, setting MIME type=application/vnd.ms-excel and have a prompt show up asking if I'd like to open or save the xls file. • Creating transparent PNG with exact RGBA values

  I'm color-coding a transparent image to be read programatically. However, the image seems to be getting compressed and my code is reading color values other than the ones I mean to pass it. Concept This is the output I get, exporting as PNG-24. I programatically check each pixel for one of the six colors I use in creating the image: 0x00000F 0x0000F0 0x000F00 0x00F000 0x0F0000 0xF00000 Each color represents a different texture to apply. Top right (0x00000F) will pull texture from the tile to its top right and blend it at a ratio equal to the opacity of the pixel. The end goal is to create a hex tiled grid with differing textures that blend smoothly. What's happening It seems that when converting to PNG, Photoshop will change the RGBA to make it smoother, or just to help compression size. Parts that should be 250 red range anywhere from 150 to 255. Question Whether using PNG or another web-compatible format, I need to be able to save these pixel values, essentially instructions, loss-less and still maintain transparency. Is this possible in any format or will I need to re-think my approach?

• float** allocation limit + serialized struct problem. Need advice!

  basically im getting an allocation limit error/warning when i create a float** array. the function i am calling to fill the float** retrieves data from a struct loaded from a file. The function works fine when i use one object but when i load 2 objects into memory i get the limit error. I am pretty sure this is to do with byte alignment or a similar thing because my struct is saved with a float** member which i am sure you are not susposed to do !?! Please confirm this! The next question i have now is how to save/serialize the float** member of this struct? I cant really afford to put an upper bound on the array ie "float [10000][3]" because i need/want to use this structure as a base for many other types of objects that may have well under the upper bound. Stroking my chin here! Any help/advice will recieve my highest gratitude. BTW these said struct objects will be used in a game/graphics package, the float** is a float[3] array for storing vertices in a model. Much thanks in advance

• Exporting to CSV/Excel in Java

  I'm trying to export data into a CSV file through Java and I've got some code to do it but it doesn't seem to be outputting the CSV file. Could someone tell me what's wrong? What I would like to do is rather than saving the file somewhere, I would like it to be directly exported to the user. EDIT: Just in case it's not clear, I don't want the file to be saved anywhere but would like it to be outputted automatically to the user i.e. they click export and get the "Run/Save results.csv" window and they open the file. • Should Service Depend on Many Repositories, or Break Them Up?

  I'm using a repository pattern for my data access. So I basically have a repository per table/class. My UI currently uses service classes to actually get things done, and these service classes wrap, and therefore depend on repositories. In many cases my services are only dependent upon one or two repositories, so things aren't too crazy. Unfortunately, one of my forms in the UI expects the user to enter data that will span five different tables. For this form I made a single service class that depends upon five repositories. Then the methods within the service for saving and loading the data call the appropriate methods on all of the corresponding repositories. As you can imagine, the save and load methods in this service are really big. Also, unit testing this service is getting really difficult because I have to setup so many fake repositories. Would it have been a better choice to break this single service apart into a few smaller services? It would put more code at the UI layer, but would make the services smaller and more testable.

• .Net forms - intercepting the Close X event.

  Hi, this must be a dumb question, but I cannot figure it out. I also cannot use the designer because coders before me managed to throw GUI and logic all in one, so now it is confused. I've got to do it the old school way. I have a Form which can be closed in 3 ways: Close button, File / Close menu, and the X icon. I want them all to do the same thing. Intercepting the button and the menu events is easy. In fact, both are hooked up to an onCloseConfig method. Btw, is there a better name for this method? private void onCloseConfig(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { if (! m_configControl.Modified) { Application.Exit(); // Or should it be this.Close(); } .... // Else present a dialog, ask if they want to save. } So, to intercept the X I tried: this.FormClosing +=new FormClosingEventHandler(this.onCloseConfig); I believe this is what causes an infinite loop. I do not want that :) FormClosed is another option, but it seems too late. I just want to intercept the fact that the X was clicked, not the fact that the form is closing. Please help. Thanks!

• Update MySQl table onDrop?

  Hi all. I am writing a PHP/MySQL application (using CodeIgniter) that uses some jQuery functionality for dragging table rows. I have a table in which the user can drag rows to the desired order (kind of a queue for which I need to preserve the rank of each row). I've been trying to figure out how to (and whether I should) update the database each time the user drops a row, in order to simplify the UI and avoid a "Save" button. I have the jQuery working and can send a serialized list back to the server onDrop, but is it good design practice to run an update query this often? The table will usually have 30-40 rows max, but if the user drags row 1 far down the list, then potentially all the rows would need to be updated to update the rank field. I've been wondering whether to send a giant query to the server, to loop through the rows in PHP and update each row with its own Update query, to send a small serialized list to a stored procedure to let the server do all the work, or perhaps a better method I haven't considered. I've read that stored procedures in MySQL are not very efficient and use a separate process for each call. Any advice as to the right solution here? Thanks very much for your help!

• Timer not beginning from 00:00

  I have a Game in which there is a timer involved. For each two minutes that passes a new round between different players begins. So, I have a text box starting from 00:00 and changes each second until it is equal to 02:00. Now, I want to save the state of the game in the middle of a round if the user closes the form. What I need to do is that upon loading, the textbox starts at the time that the user left the game the last time and continue up till 02:00 normally. How can I do this? • Why doesn't my dataset.AcceptChanges update some new rows i've added?

  I have a dataset in a datagrid with some data in it. Recently I've been asked to add some data to that dataset along with some controls to save the data from. I've added a few textboxes, 1 combobox and 3 textboxes that function as viewing of some datetimepickers that I have to use for dates. I've chosen to use textboxes in combination with datetimepicker because I also need to get and set the value NULL to the database. The problem is that when i call dataset.AcceptChanges() on that dataset that is binded using databinding to those controls it doesn't update the data that's contained in those three textboxes and the combobox. All the new stuff i've added works just fine. txtDataAcordare.DataBindings.Clear(); txtDataAcordare.DataBindings.Add("Text",dtPersonal,"d_DataAcordare"); txtDataInceput.DataBindings.Clear(); txtDataInceput.DataBindings.Add("Text", dtPersonal, "d_DataInceput"); txtDataSfarsit.DataBindings.Clear(); txtDataSfarsit.DataBindings.Add("Text", dtPersonal, "d_DataSfarsit"); this is the code i use to add the databinding. I am then using the datetime picker event CloseUp() to add the date into the textbox: txtDataAcordare.Text = dtpDataAcordare.Text; txtDataAcordare.Visible = true; txtDataAcordare.BringToFront(); After all my fields are completed i call: dtPersonal.AcceptChanges(); and these three textboxes don't get saved!   I'm doing a school software project with my class mates in Java. We store the info on a remote db. When we start the application we pull all the information from the database and transform it into objects to use in our application (using java sql statemens). In the application we edit some of these objects and then when we exit the application we save or update information in the database using Hibernate. As you see we dont use Hibernate for pulling in information, we use it just for saving and updating. We have 2, but very similar problems. The loading of object(when we start the app) and the saving of objects(with Hibernate) in the db(when closing the app) is taking too much time. And our project its not a huge enterprise application, its a quite small app, we just manage some students, teachers, homeworks and tests. So our db is also very very small. How could we increase performance ? later edit: if we use a local database it runs very quick, it just runs slow on remote databases

  I'm trying to make my own type of remote desktop for WP7. I have a WCF service that returns an image on what's on the target machine's screen. Here's the WCF Server Code: // Method to load desktop image Bitmap image = new Bitmap( ViewSize.Width, ViewSize.Height ); Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage( image ); g.CopyFromScreen( Position.X, Position.Y, 0, 0, ViewSize ); g.Dispose( ); return image; // Convert image to byte[] which is returned to client using ( MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream( ) ) { Bitmap image = screenGrabber.LoadScreenImage( ); image.Save( ms, ImageFormat.Jpeg ); imageArray = ms.ToArray( ); } Here's the code for the WP7 client: MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream( data ); BitmapImage image = new BitmapImage( ); image.SetSource( stream ); BackgroundImage.Source = image; The BackgroundImage variable is an Image control. I'm noticing this freeze on the emulator after a short while, and will eventually crash from an OutOfMemoryException. This is already pretty slow ( images show up a good half second later than what's on the screen ), and I'm wondering if there's a better/faster way of doing this? Any help would be great.
