• MS Chart Control Scale - Line graph show 12 months

  Hi, On my X Axis, I have months. The chart shows up to 11 points, i.e. Jan - Nov of the same year, but when I add 12 points (Jan - Dec), it will do an auto label thing and change the interval for every 4 months. How can I change the graph so that it shows 12 months before it does the auto labels? • VB6 App + .Net component working as compiled app but not in VB6 IDE

  I have a VB6 App that uses a .Net component (via a .tlb reference in the VB6 app) which is working fine when executed as a compiled app, but it produces an error from the VB6 IDE a certain point when it is trying to use the .NET component. I should note that the error occurs when the .NET component is meant to be invoking a third party reporting component. What could the problem be? Could the VB6 IDE be looking in a different location for certain DLLs? The .tlb is in the same location as the application executable so I don't why there should be a problem. I need to have the application running in the IDE in order to debug and step through the code.

• Convert Wordpress.com Hosted Blog to BlogEngine.NET

  I'm looking at what is needed to move from wordpress.com to a BlogEngine.NET or similar blog. I've seen a tool for replacing export.php so that it will export your wordpress site in BlogML format so it can easily be imported into BlogEngine.NET, however I'd really not want to have to setup php/wordpress just so I can import a back up from wordpress.com and then use the export from my local wordpress to have a BlogML file. Are there any tools that will convert the wordpress file? Is there a different blog that will natively import the wordpress file? Edit: For the question about other blog providers, I am open to them as long as they are .NET based, preferably C#.

• What is good practice in .NET system architecture design concerning multiple models and aggregates

  I'm designing a larger enterprise architecture and I'm in a doubt about how to separate the models and design those. There are several points I'd like suggestions for: - models to define - way to define models Currently my idea is to define: Core (domain) model Repositories to get data to that domain model from a database or other store Business logic model that would contain business logic, validation logic and more specific versions of forms of data retrieval methods View models prepared for specifically formated data output that would be parsed by views of different kind (web, silverlight, etc). For the first model I'm puzzled at what to use and how to define the mode. Should this model entities contain collections and in what form? IList, IEnumerable or IQueryable collections? - I'm thinking of immutable collections which IEnumerable is, but I'd like to avoid huge data collections and to offer my Business logic layer access with LINQ expressions so that query trees get executed at Data level and retrieve only really required data for situations like the one when I'm retrieving a very specific subset of elements amongst thousands or hundreds of thousands. What if I have an item with several thousands of bids? I can't just make an IEnumerable collection of those on the model and then retrieve an item list in some Repository method or even Business model method. Should it be IQueryable so that I actually pass my queries to Repository all the way from the Business logic model layer? Should I just avoid collections in my domain model? Should I void only some collections? Should I separate Domain model and BusinessLogic model or integrate those? Data would be dealt trough repositories which would use Domain model classes. Should repositories be used directly using only classes from domain model like data containers? This is an example of what I had in mind: So, my Domain objects would look like (e.g.) public class Item { public string ItemName { get; set; } public int Price { get; set; } public bool Available { get; set; } private IList<Bid> _bids; public IQueryable<Bid> Bids { get { return _bids.AsQueryable(); } private set { _bids = value; } } public AddNewBid(Bid newBid) { _bids.Add(new Bid {.... } } Where Bid would be defined as a normal class. Repositories would be defined as data retrieval factories and used to get data into another (Business logic) model which would again be used to get data to ViewModels which would then be rendered by different consumers. I would define IQueryable interfaces for all aggregating collections to get flexibility and minimize data retrieved from real data store. Or should I make Domain Model "anemic" with pure data store entities and all collections define for business logic model? One of the most important questions is, where to have IQueryable typed collections? - All the way from Repositories to Business model or not at all and expose only solid IList and IEnumerable from Repositories and deal with more specific queries inside Business model, but have more finer grained methods for data retrieval within Repositories. So, what do you think? Have any suggestions?

We are going to use .NET 3.5, and I wish to known if there are any know bugs or perfomance issues that could give weird behaviour for my project? I'm reading some things about EFv4 and all they say is that EFv3.5 have too many problems. After all, what's the best and fastest way, ADO.NET Entities or extract the data from my DB directly to a DataReader? The EF Oracle provider is stable? The project will be .NET 3.5 and Oracle.

• How to debug jQuery ajax POST to .NET webservice

  Hey all. I have a web service that I have published locally. I wrote an HTML page to test the web service. The webservice is expecting a string that will be XML. When I debug the web service from within VS everything works great. I can use FireBug and see that my web service is indeed being hit by they AJAX call. After deploying the web service locally to IIS it does not appear to be working. I need to know the best way to trouble shoot this problem. My AJAX js looks like this: function postSummaryXml(data) { $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: 'http://localhost/collection/services/datacollector.asmx/SaveSummaryDisplayData', data: { xml: data }, error: function(result) { alert(result); }, success: function(result) { alert(result); } }); The web method looks like so: [WebMethod] public string SaveSummaryDisplayData(string xml) { XmlDocument xmlDocument = new XmlDocument(); xmlDocument.LoadXml(xml); XmlParser parser = new XmlParser(xmlDocument); IModel repository = new Repository(); if(repository.AddRecord("TestData",parser.TestValues)) { return "true"; } return "false"; } } I added the return string to the web method in an attempt to ensure that the web-service is really hit from the ajax. The problem is this: In FF the 'Success' function is always called yet the result is always 'NULL'. And the web method does not appear to have worked (no data saved). In IE the 'Error' function is called and the response is server error: 500. I think (believe it or not) IE is giving me a more accurate indication that something is wrong but I cannnot determine what the issue is. Can someone please suggest how I should expose the specific server error message? Thanks for the help!

• SQLCLR using the wrong version of the .NET Framework

  During a recent restart of our development server the SQL Server started using .NET 4.0 for the SQLCLR. Method's type signature is not Interop compatible. Does anyone know how to solve this or how we can force SQL Server CLR to use an earlier version of the Framework?

• Speed Difference between native OLE DB and ADO.NET

  I'm looking for suggestions as well as any benchmarks or observations people have. We are looking to rewrite our data access layer and are trying to decide between native C++ OLEDB or ADO.NET for connecting with databases. Currently we are specifically targeting Oracle which would mean we would use the Oracle OLE DB provider and the ODP.NET. Requirements: 1. All applications will be in managed code so using native C++ OLEDB would require C++/CLI to work (no PInvoke way to slow). 2. Application must work with multiple databases in the future, currently just targeting Oracle specifically. Question: 1. Would it be more performant to use ADO.NET to accomplish this or use native C++ OLE DB wrapped in a Managed C++ interface for managed code to access? Any ideas, or help or places to look on the web would be greatly appreciated.

• bundle .NET dlls to run application in .NET-less machine?

  AFAIK, ngen turns MSIL into native code (also reffered to as pre-JIT), however I never payed too much attention at it's startup performance impact. Ngen'd applications still require the .NET base class libraries (the runtime). Since the base class libraries have everything our .NET assemblies need (correct?) would it be possible to ship the framework's DLLs with my ngen'd application so that it does not require the runtime to be installed? (e.g., the scenario for most Windows XP machines) Oh, and please don't bother mentioning Remotesoft's Salamander Linker or Xenocode's Postbuild. They are not for my (and many's) current budget (and they seem to simply bundle the framework in a virtualized enviroinment, which means big download sizes and slow startup times I believe) EDIT: I know now, ngen doesn't do what I thought it did. But is it possible to bundle the .NET files with an application, without using a VM?

• Setting up a button to trigger both modalPopupExtender and his Click Method

  Hey guys, I have this modalPopupExtender, I want it to show a CheckBoxList with some data. I have set up a button to call both the method to fill the CheckBoxes and trigger the modalPopup (TargetControlID). they're all inside an UpdatePanel. with the right triggers. The problem is that when I click the button it shows the modalPopup but doesn't load the method to fill my CheckBoxes... Also, a linkButton inside the poup (linkButtonCheckAll) just closes the popup when clicked. As its unmanaged PE(.NET doesn't allows you to convert unmanaged PE files to managed .NET assemblies, only it generates COM managed assemblies). So how to parse export and import tables of PE files and take all methods(signatures from it) in managed form.(e.g if char* as argument, it should display as IntPtr) Regards Usman

• .net MVC RenderPartial renders information that is not in the model

  Hi, I have a usercontrol that is rendering a list of items. Each row contains a unique id in a hidden field, a text and a delete button. When clicking on the delete button I use jquery ajax to call the controller method DeleteCA (seen below). DeleteCA returns a new list of items that replaces the old list. [HttpPost] public PartialViewResult DeleteCA(CAsViewModel CAs, Guid CAIdToDelete) { int indexToRemove = CAs.CAList.IndexOf(CAs.CAList.Single(m => m.Id == CAIdToDelete)); CAs.CAList.RemoveAt(indexToRemove); return PartialView("EditorTemplates/CAs", CAs); } I have checked that DeleteCA is really removing the correct item. The modified list of CAs passed to PartialView no longer contains the deleted item. Something weird happens when the partial view is rendered. The number of items in the list is reduced but it is always the last element that is removed from the list. The rendered items does not correspond to the items in the list/model sent to PartialView. In the usercontrol file (ascx) I'm using both Model.CAList and lambda expression m = m.CAList. How is it possible for the usercontrol to render stuff that is not in the model sent to PartialView? • Creating a future proof .NET 3.5 SP1 installer prerequisite for setup.exe AND the .MSI

  I've demanded .NET 3.5 SP1 a la http://stackoverflow.com/questions/88136/will-a-vs2008-setup-project-update-net-3-5-sp1. This makes the setup.exe check correctly. I've also added a "SP1" launch condition to my MSI so it doesn't let the user install my .NET 3.5SP1 app via launching the MSI (and replaced the [VSDNETMSG] in the Framework condition message with one that actually mentions SP1). From a future proofing point of view, this feels wrong. I want the condition to be: (NETVer=3.5 AND Net35SPLevel=1) OR (NETVer=>3.5) not (NETVer=3.5 AND Net35SPLevel=1) Is there any way to do that? The framework check doesnt have a condition property to allow me to add a sub-condition... Yes, I could also just not worry my pretty little head about it :P If one of the MS versioning experts out there reads this, if you're going to put stuff that code depends on into SPs, can you please make the installer be able to check for it OOTB. (I really wish they had come up with a better numbering scheme - the world and its dog could see that this was going to get confusing)

I know it will vary greatly based upon the types of projects you develop but the stack overflow audience should provide a fairly decent sample set for the types of .NET projects being developed. I'm simply interest in the name of the namespace (one namespace per answer and no one person should have more than one answer, if someone else has the same answer as you then just upvote their answer). Try to be as specific as possible (so answering System, isn't helpful). I'm after this information to help new developers focus their attention on the most common .NET namespaces...there are after all thousands of them! To start off mine is almost certainly System.Collections.Generic, I use lists of things everywhere.

• Manage Foreign key and Drop downlist for optional field in .NET

  What is the best way to handle following situation? A dropdown(for master table) is optional in a particular form. But, In database table the field is constrained with foreign key. If user don't select from dropdown then It creates problem because of foreign key. One solution is to create default option in master table and use it in case of blank selection. but in dropdown, we need to handle this to show on top. Is it perfect solution? • Using transactions with ADO.NET Data Adapters.

  Scenario: I want to let multiple (2 to 20, probably) server applications use a single database using ADO.NET. I want individual applications to be able to take ownership of sets of records in the database, hold them in memory (for speed) in DataSets, respond to client requests on the data, perform updates, and prevent other applications from updating those records until ownership has been relinquished. I'm new to ADO.NET, but it seems like this should be possible using transactions with Data Adapters (ADO.NET disconnected layer). Question part 1: Is that the right way to try and do this? Question part 2: If that is the right way, can anyone point me at any tutorials or examples of this kind of approach (in C#)? Question part 3: If I want to be able to take ownership of individual records and release them independently, am I going to need a separate transaction for each record, and by extension a separate DataAdapter and DataSet to hold each record, or is there a better way to do that? Each application will likely hold ownership of thousands of records simultaneously.

My situation is that I have a master page with a structure that looks like this: <head runat="server"> <title>Test Site</title> <link rel="Stylesheet" type="text/css" href="Default.css" /> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" src="js/Default.js" /> <meta http-equiv="Expires" content="0"/> <meta http-equiv="Cache-Control" content="no-cache"/> <meta http-equiv="Pragma" content="no-cache"/> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="cphHead" runat="server"> </asp:ContentPlaceHolder> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div id="divHeader"> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="cphPageTitle" runat="server"></asp:ContentPlaceHolder> </div> <div id="divMainContent"> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="cphMainContent" runat="server"></asp:ContentPlaceHolder> </div> </div> </form> </body> I then have a page that uses this master page that contains the following: <asp:Content ContentPlaceHolderID="cphHead" runat="server"> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" > function test() { alert("Hello World"); } </script> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ContentPlaceHolderID="cphMainContent" runat="server"> <fieldset> <img alt="Select As Of Date" src="Images/Calendar.png" id="aAsOfDate" class="clickable" runat="server" onclick="test();" /> <asp:Button runat="server" CssClass="buttonStyle" ID="btnSubmit" Text="Submit" OnClick="btnSubmit_Clicked"/> </fieldset> </asp:Content> When I run this page and click on the image I get an "Object Expected" error. However, if I place the test function into my Default.js external file it will function perfectly. I can't seem to figure out why this is happening. Any ideas?
