• How can I recover an ext4 filesystem corrupted after a fsck?

  I have an ext4 filesystem on luks over software raid5. The filesystem was operating "just fine" for several years when I was beginning to run out of space. I had a 9T volume on 6x2T drives. I began upgrading to 3T drives by doing the mdadm fail, remove, add, rebuild, repeat process until I had a larger array. I then grew the luks container, and then when I unmounted and tried to resize2fs I was given the message the filesystem was dirty and needed e2fsck. Without thinking I just did e2fsck -y /dev/mapper/candybox and it began spewing all kinds of inode being removed type messages (can't remember exactly) I killed e2fsck and tried to remount the filesystem to backup data I was concerned about. When trying to mount at this point I get: # mount /dev/mapper/candybox /candybox mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/candybox, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Looking back at my older logs I noticed the filesystem was giving this error each time the machine booted: kernel: [79137.275531] EXT4-fs (dm-2): warning: mounting fs with errors, running e2fsck is recommended So shame on me for not paying attention :( I then tried to mount using every backup superblock (one after another) and each attempt left this in my log: EXT4-fs (dm-2): ext4_check_descriptors: Checksum for group 0 failed (26534!=65440) EXT4-fs (dm-2): ext4_check_descriptors: Checksum for group 1 failed (38021!=36729) EXT4-fs (dm-2): ext4_check_descriptors: Checksum for group 2 failed (18336!=39845) ... EXT4-fs (dm-2): ext4_check_descriptors: Checksum for group 11911 failed (28743!=44098) BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 23s! [mount:2939] Attempts to restart e2fsck results in: # e2fsck /dev/mapper/candybox e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010) e2fsck: Group descriptors look bad... trying backup blocks... candy: recovering journal e2fsck: unable to set superblock flags on candy At this point, I decided it best to order some more drives and make an image using ddrescue Now two weeks later I have an image of the luks partition in a .img file. # ls -lh total 14T -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 14T Oct 25 01:57 candybox.img -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 271 Oct 20 14:32 candybox.logfile After numerous attempts using everything I could find online I could not coerce e2fsck to do anything on the image, so I used mkfs.ext4 -L candy candybox.img -m 0 -S and I was able to mount the dirty filesystem readonly without the journal and recover 960G of data. It gave all kinds of errors of various directories not existing and so forth but I was able to get some stuff. Which gave me some hope! I then ran e2fsck again and it had to recreate the root inode and gave a massive list of correcting group counts, I accepted the root inode creation and said no to everything else, leaving a completely empty filesystem. Re-ran again and said yes to all questions with the same result but now a "clean" but empty filesystem. extundelete gives me 0 recoverable inodes found. And now I'm stuck again, I can't come up with any other methods other than dropping to something like photorec which will give me an absolute mess with how large the filesystem was. I'm willing to re-copy the image from the original array and start over, if I can get any suggestions or ideas on a way to get more of my files back. I wish I could give more detailed logs of the commands that have run, but the output is long scrolled passed except for what gets logged to syslog and my memory is not as detailed due to the timeframe this has occurred over. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  I've been trying to copy a Proxmox container based on the Ubuntu Precise Standard template to a VirtualBox VM. I am now stuck at a point where my new Ubuntu/VirtualBox VM hangs after the message "Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done" during boot. I started by installing Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 LTS on a VirtualBox VM. Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 LTS was the closest "official" Ubuntu ISO to the Proxmox container OS I could find. I installed all updates on both the Proxmox container and on the VirtualBox VM. The idea was to get same version kernal running on the ProxMox container and VirtualBox VM. sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get upgrade ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo reboot rsync the entire proxmox container to a temporary directory in the VirtualBox VM: cd / mkdir /tmp/backup rsync -e ssh -av --exclude={/dev,/proc,/sys,/tmp,/run,/mnt,/media,/lost+found,/boot,/selinux} root@my_proxmox_container_hostname:/ /tmp/backup Shut down the virtual machine, and boot the VM with a bootable linux image. I used the Desktop image of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, ubuntu-12.04.4-desktop-i386.iso Drop to a root prompt. Mount the VM root filesystem: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt Remove files from most of /mnt cd /mnt sudo rm -rf bin etc home lib opt sbin root usr var Move all of the files from /mnt/backup into /mnt sudo mv /mnt/tmp/backup/* /mnt Rebooted system. For me, at this point the system freezes after starting, after the message: Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done I've tried reinstalling GRUB and all manner of other thing. I am almost ready to give up.

I can connect to the server in SSMS as a separate server, and execute a similar query against its Deposits table. The nn.nn is my own replacement to avoid broadcasting our server addresses. The query: select td.Batch , td.DateTimeDeposited from Deposits cd left join [172.nn.nn.32\sqlexpress].Terminal.dbo.Deposits td on cd.DateTimeDeposited = td.DateTimeDeposited The error: OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "172.nn.nn.11\sqlexpress" returned message "Login timeout expired". OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "172.nn.nn.11\sqlexpress" returned message "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.". Msg 65535, Level 16, State 1, Line 0 SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Notice how the error is about server 172.nn.nn.11 and not 172.nn.nn.32. SOLVED (STUPID ME): Somebody had added an extra bit to my query that was scrolled off-screen and was querying the 17.nn.nn.11 server.

• Windows 2000 uninstall on a dual-boot 2000/XP system

  While several questions have already been answered about removing an OS from a dual-booting machine, most refer to Windows 7 vs. Linux/Vista/XP. I have W2K installed on my older HDD (Drive C). Later on I bought a new HDD and installed XP's under W2K environment. Each time I turned my PC on, I had the choice of W2K or XP OS, which I still have. I eventually stopped using the w2k OS and as the older HDD where this OS is installed is getting old, I plan to remove it completely. The problem is that the active master boot record is on this very HDD. So when I remove the HDD, I get no OS loader, no matter what boot drive I choose in BIOS. Apparently I have to set the boot record on the newer HDD with XP's. Some advise to use the bootable XP CD and try to set the active MBR from there.. I don't have the CD anymore. Regardless, I suspect there is much less to solving this problem than running the recovery console, like a simple boot.ini file edit. But I might be wrong.

• Sysprep and Capture task sequence failing using MDT 2010

  I have created a Windows Deployment Services server in Windows 2008 R2. When I originally set it up I was able to successfully use MDT 2010 to create my boot images as well as creating task sequences that would sysprep and capture, and deploy my custom .wim files. Everything was working perfectly. About a month later I boot up my Windows 7 x86 image and run Windows updates to keep my image up to date. I then go and run my sysprep and capture task sequence and I get the following errors: I searched online for the cause of this error message and it just seems to be a generic permission denied type of error message. I then decided to completely rebuild my VM image from scratch and try again. I am still getting the same error messages as before. The following is what I have tried troubleshooting this issue: Troubleshooting: I have ensured that that UAC and the firewall is turned completely off when trying to capture the image. I have tried recreating the task sequence and making sure that the deployment share is updated. I have ensured that the local Administrator account is enabled and has the same password as specified in the task sequence. I have tried joining the computer to the domain and running the task sequence and I get a different error: I have attempted to run the script from the command prompt with "Run as Administrator" and I still receive the same errors above. For testing purposes I have ensured that Everyone has read/write access to my deployment share. I have spent days on trying to resolve this to no avail. Any ideas?   Hello. I'm trying to setup vsftpd on Fedora 12. I need to require use of FTPS, and for now need to use a self-signed SSL certificate. I managed to get the vsftpd service running and to connect as my user. I can list the home directory, but as soon as I try to list another directory, download or upload a file, I get this error: No available certificate or key corresponds to the SSL cipher suites which are enabled. And the xfer log is empty. I've been Googling it for a while now, but still can't understand the problem. Here's how I installed vsftpd: su yum install vsftpd chkconfig vsftpd on service vsftpd start I tried to generate the certificate in two ways.   How can a Virtual PC with Win XP on it install the East Asian Language? (or does any browser come with Chinese fonts?) After setting up a virtual PC with Win XP, if Chinese font is needed, then the usual way is to go to the Control Panel, select "Regional and Language" and go to the second tab and check the box "Install Files for East Asian Languages". After clicking OK, it asks for the file cplexe.exe on the XP SP3 CD 3... and is said to be about 230MB... In such case, how can the language pack or fonts be installed? (Update: I found that it is true for Window 7's Virtual PC with XP on it, as well as the XP SP3 with IE 8 that can be downloaded in the link below.) (I downloaded the virtual hard drive file .vhd from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=21EABB90-958F-4B64-B5F1-73D0A413C8EF&displaylang=en so there is no "CD 3"... there) Or does any browser come with all the unicode fonts without needing the OS to support it?

• mdadm cron job sends email that cron has run

  I've got an Ubuntu 8.04 server using mdadm to create several RAID1 arrays. If it's the underlying cause of this, I need to fix it.) mdadm sends me email (configured in the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf) on DegradedArray etc. events. This is the desired behaviour. • Windows 7 AIK help

  I've just got in a few Windows 7 (64, Windows 7 Professional) machines, and I'm trying to get the AIK 2010 working. I've set up one of the machines, and installed AIK and MDT on it. I've followed the directions at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd349348%28WS.10%29.aspx about 3 times now, and also tried the built-in .chm help files that came with AIK. In AIK I grab the install.wim image off the OEM cd, at which point it asks me which version (I select Professional). I follow the rest of the instructions creating a new Autounattend answer file, and fill in the various bits and pieces according the the step-by-step guides. I verify the Answer file (No warnings or errors), save it, and copy it onto a USB drive. I go to another machine, insert it's OEM Win7 Disk, and power on. I've set BIOS to boot from CD, so it goes directly into the installation. Once The files are loaded, and Setup starts, it immediately asks which version to install (Home basic, Home Premium, Professiona, Ultimate). Ugh, I thought it was supposed to be an automated install, and that selecting the Version when opening the .wim file would answer this question. I looked for an option to set which version to be installed on the net, in the help, and in AIK itself; to no avail. Anyway, just for laughs I select Professional,and hit continue. It copies files for about 10 seconds, then fails with the following error: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information. [OK]". Clicking OK reboots the box, and obviously there are no log files because the OS isn't installed. It is a Dell Optiplex 380 , Intel Core Duo 2.93 GHzl 4 GB RAM, 64 Bit. Any help would be REALLY appreciated.

• chmod -R 777 / on ubuntu - numerous problems

  A client has accidentally given the entire filesystem full permissions on their ubuntu 10.04 box. chmod -R 777 httpdocs/cd / As you can see they attempted to cd to the root, and instead gave chmod a fun parameter to play with. First sign of the problem was inability to use 'su', giving an authentication error. sudo also complained of a missing setuid bit. This was fixed by logging in as root from the machine itself, and running chmod +s /usr/bin/sudo. I can now sudo su and do what I need to as root. su still gives an authentication failure. I followed the advice here: http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1180661&page=2 chmod 0755 / chmod 0755 /* chmod 1777 /tmp chmod 0750 /root chmod 0700 /lost+found I then tried to reset root password. I still cannot su to become root, or su root. The system seems to be running fine. Are there any suggestions for getting su to work once again? Where can I look for more problems?

• GRUB doesn't recognize partitions on one harddisk

  I have a dualboot computer with Windows Vista (on hd0) and Ubuntu 9.10. The bootloader is GRUB and the windows bootloader lets me decide between Vista and Ubuntu-Installation (broken WuBi). But now (i don't know why that changed) I can't use start the windows-bootloader anymore. I tried "ls" on the grub-prompt and it gave me a list like: (hd0) (hd1) (hd1,0) (hd1,1) (hd1,2) ... (fd0) It recognizes all partitions of hd1 (the ubuntu-harddisk) but not of hd0(the win-disk). .. WHY? • Problem recreating BCD on Windows 7 64bit - The requested system device cannot be found

  NVIDIA drivers upgrade crashed my Windows 7 installation, so I'm working to undo the damage. What I can do: I can boot Windows install from the USB drive, and I can boot the Hiren's Boot CD. Although automated Windows repair fails, I can get to command prompt when I boot Windows install from USB drive, and I can see my drive and all my data. What I cannot do: I cannot boot into Windows - I get this message: Windows failed to start. A recent hardwware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.insert windos cd and run a repair your computer option. File: /boot/bcd Status: 0xc000000f Info: an error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data. It seems that something is wrong with my /Boot/BCD, so I'm trying to recreate it from scratch. I've tried all the methods detailed here (including Windows repair which fails), and I'm left with the last one (near the bottom of that page). When I type the following command as in the tutorial: bcdedit.exe /import c:\boot\bcd.temp ...it fails with the following error: The store import operation has failed. The requested system device cannot be found. Many Google results say that I must use diskpart to set my partition active, however it's already set as active. Also, when I try this: bcdedit /enum It fails with similar message: The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found. Does anyone know what does that error message mean, and what is the requested system device? I'd like to avoid having to reinstall Windows since all the files on disk seem to be fine.

• How to get the permissions right for /dev/raw1394

  I recently upgraded one of my ubuntu machines to Karmic and I'm having trouble getting the permissions of /dev/raw1394 set to 0666. They only thing this machine is used for is recording audio from a firepod which uses /dev/raw1394 via jackd and there are no other FireWire devices connected, so security around this device is not really an issue. If I run as root, everything works as expected, but I have some folks that run the recorder that I don't want to have root access. • Can't install NPM after installing Node on EC2 Linux instance?

  I'm trying my first attempt on getting a node server set up on an amazon ec2 linux instance. I think I made it quite far. First problem I ran into was when trying to make Node the connection timed out after a while, so I need three attempts until I got this: LINK(target) /home/ec2-user/node/out/Release/node: Finished touch /home/ec2-user/node/out/Release/obj.target/node_dtrace_header.stamp touch /home/ec2-user/node/out/Release/obj.target/node_dtrace_provider.stamp touch /home/ec2-user/node/out/Release/obj.target/node_dtrace_ustack.stamp touch /home/ec2-user/node/out/Release/obj.target/node_etw.stamp make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/ec2-user/node/out' ln -fs out/Release/node node Which tells me, "Node is done", although I'm not sure it is also working as it should. Following this,this and this tutorial, I'm now stuck at installing npm. I think I first cloned into the wrong folder, which always gave me error 127, but even if I'm doing this: cd ~ git clone git://github.com/isaacs/npm.git cd npm sudo -s PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH make install I'm still getting this: #after cloning# make[1]: Entering directory `/root/npm' node cli.js install bash: node: command not found make[1]: *** [node_modules/.bin/ronn] Error 127 make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/npm' make: *** [man/man3/start.3] Error 2 Question:: Since I'm pretty much a newby at everything I'm trying here, can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to get npm to install? • Any ideas out there as to how the data can be recovered from an SSD?

  A friend had some form of catastrophic failure on an HP mini 1000, unbootable. Of course there was data that wasn't backed up. I've removed the SSD and hooked it up to a ZIF 40 enclosure but can not seem to get the drive to be recognized in Windows 7. In Disk Management it displays as present, but uninitialized. Attempting to initialize it presents an error Virtual Disk Manager - "The device is not ready". There is scant information on MIE (the custom OS), so I'm not even sure what kind of file system I'm dealing with. In any case, if the filesystem is indeed some flavor other than FAT or NTFS, is this error consistent with that? Are there any creative ideas out there as to how the data can be recovered? Update: Thanks for all the suggestions! I hadn't even considered running a live cd. Unfortunately no luck with Ubuntu (live cd) or explore2fs. The zif connection seems ok (color coded green led for proper connect, orange for not). The drive can't be initialized and therefore can't be formatted, so I guess there may be some real damage. Probably needs to head to a specialist. Thanks again for the feedback, much appreciated.

• problem booting crusty old windows XP

  I have an acer aspire laptop running Windows XP home. I believe I have some virus on it, I'm not sure--I mostly just run linux in a VM on it so I wasn't too worried. I'm not sure if that virus caused this problem. The laptop wasn't recognizing my USB hard drive for some reason so I decided to restart it. When it started up, it got past the memory test, past the boot screen, (but it paused right here on a blank screen for awhile) and flashed the desktop once (like it does just before the login screen) and then crashed. I got a quick BSOD and then it restarted. Then it tried to boot again, etc etc infinite loop of failure. Well, before trying safe mode, I disabled automatic restart on system crash so I could read the blue screen. There wasn't anything important on it, it said *** STOP: 0x00000000 (0xC0000000 0x,.... ) beginning physical memory dump physical memory dump complete That's not verbatim (obviously) but it didn't help me. so I booted in safe mode, and it stopped on the driver gagp30kx.sys and then restarted (and infinite loop of failure again). I burned a recovery CD and tried that. It loaded it, and I went into repair mode. I ran chkdsk and then disabled the AGP driver. Same thing on booting in safe mode except it stopped at mup.sys instead. I enabled the AGP driver again, and ran chkdsk again from the CD. It said it found problems but didn't say it fixed them. So I ran it a second time, and it said "performing additional checking or recovery" lots of times (I can't tell how many, they went above the screen top). I tried booting again and no luck. Every time I run chkdsk after trying to boot again it says it found and fixed more errors. I think it might be whatever driver is after the AGP driver, but I don't know what it is or how to find out. Can anyone help me fix this?

• Puppet: array in parameterized classes VS using resources

  I have some use cases where I want to define multiple similar resources that should end up in a single file (via a template). As an example I'm trying to write a puppet module that will let me manage the mapping between MAC addresses and network interface names (writing udev's persistent-net-rules file from puppet), but there are also many other similar usage cases. I searched around and found that it could be done with the new parameterised classes syntax: if implemented that way it should end up being used like this: node { "myserver.example.com": class { "network::iftab": interfaces => { "eth0" => { "mac" => "ab:cd:ef:98:76:54" } "eth1" => { "mac" => "98:76:de:ad:be:ef" } } } } Not too bad, I agree, but it would rapidly explode when you manage more complex stuff (think network configurations like in this module or any other multiple-complex-resources-in-a-single-config-file stuff). In a similar question on SF someone suggested using Pienaar's puppet-concat module but I doubt it could get any better than parameterised classes. What would be really cool and clean in the configuration definition would be something like the included host type, it's usage is simple, pretty and clean and naturally maps to multiple resources that will end up being configured in a single place. Transposed to my example it would be like: node { "myserver.example.com": interface { "eth0": "mac" => "ab:cd:ef:98:76:54", "foo" => "bar", "asd" => "lol", "eth1": "mac" => "98:76:de:ad:be:ef", "foo" => "rab", "asd" => "olo", } } ...that looks much better to my eyes, even with 3x options to each resource. Should I really be passing arrays to parameterised classes, or there is a better way to do this kind of stuff? Is there some accepted consensus in the puppet [users|developers] community? By the way, I'm referring to the latest stable release of the 2.7 branch and I am not interested in compatibility with older versions.

• Unable to boot with Windows 2008 DVD / USB Key

  Hi everyone, I am trying to install Windows 2008 server on a HP Proliant DL180 G5. There is no built-in DVD reader so I need to use my LaCie USB one. When I put the CD in and boot from the USB DVD on the server, I get the error message: Boot Failed! Please insert boot media in selected boot device. So I tried with another Windows bootable CD and still no luck. What I've done then, I copied the installation DVD on my 16go USB key. Again, impossible to boot from the USB Key. I have 2 147go SAS 15k HDD on my server. They are not showing in the Bios. I was wondering if this is a reason why nothing will boot on it. I am trying to find a way to deploy Windows 2008 server on my HP server as soon as possible. If you guys have ideas, feel free to let me know :) Best regards, David. • configuring vsftpd anonymous upload. Creates files but freezes at 0 bytes

  vsftpd on ubuntu after sudo apt-get install vsftpd Then did configuration as in the attached /etc/vsftpd.conf file. Anonymous ftp allows cd to the upload directly and allows put myfile.txt which gets created on the server but then the client hangs and never proceeds. The file on the server remains at 0 bytes. • How to repair Mac OSX without reinstalling?

  I have an intel PC. I have installed iDeneb Mac OS X in my pc. It's running fine. After that I thought to install Snow Leopard for running the iPad SDK. So I bought a retail Snow Leopard and boot it with Rebel EFI boot loader. When I was installing Snow Leopard, at the end of installation, setup gives an error. So I restarted my PC and boot with Rebel and I saw that mac was there so I boot that into safe mode and Mac OSX runs. After that I install iPad SDK. But when I try to create an application, XCode is not responsive. It hangs when I choose new project, give it a name and save it on disk. After just as I gave name and choose save it hangs. Is there any way i can repair my Mac OSX without reinstalling? I have also unable to boot into normal mode and also without Rebel CD. So I want to boot without Rebel CD and also want to run iPad SDK so please help me to solve this problem.
