• SSIS Reporting Pack – a performance tip

  SSIS Reporting Pack is a suite of open source SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports that provide additional insight into the SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2012 Catalog. You can read more about SSIS Reporting Pack here on my blog or had over to the home page for the project at http://ssisreportingpack.codeplex.com/. After having used SSRS Reporting Pack on a real project for a few months now I have come to realise that if you have any sizeable data volumes in [SSISDB] then the reports in SSIS Reporting Pack will suffer from chronic performance problems – I have seen the “execution” report take upwards of 30minutes to return data. To combat this I highly recommend that you create an index on the [SSISDB].[internal].[event_messages].[operation_id] & [SSISDB].[internal].[operation_messages].[operation_id] fields. Phil Brammer has experienced similar problems himself and has since made it easy for the rest of us by preparing some scripts to create the indexes that he recommends and he has shared those scripts via his blog at http://www.ssistalk.com/SSIS_2012_Missing_Indexes.zip. If you are using SSIS Reporting Pack, or even if you are simply querying [SSISDB], I highly recommend that you download Phil’s scripts and test them out on your own SSIS Catalog(s). Those indexes will not solve all problems but they will make some of your reports run quicker. I am working on some further enhancements that should further improve the performance of the reports. • Do licenses matter if there's nobody around to enforce them?

  Suppose that the original creators can't (or won't) enforce a license on their software/code, but that work is still popular. I guess if you want to visualize it, I'll throw out a convoluted hypothetical: Imagine a very small group of developers that released a code project under an open-source license. The repository was hosted on their servers. However, the everybody on the immediate development team passed away in a tragic accident or something. Their servers shut down after this happened. The project had a fairly large user base, and so others began to host the last revision on their own servers for others to download. (Yes, I have an active imagination) Does abiding by the license simply become a matter of morality by its users, or can there still exist a legal penalty when there is no one user or group to enforce it? Could anything be done if an unscrupulous user decided to branch off the project and use it under a different license? I am not looking for legal advice -- I am simply curious about how software licenses work. I tend to think of strange situations and wonder what would happen in those scenarios.

  I have a computer of a friend of mine, that runs Ubuntu (I don't know what version, due to the current system status) and while he was updating the kernel, he reboot the computer (yes that could be happen !!, anyway) Currently I am trying to recover the system by using a live USB, with Ubuntu installed on it. What I am doing, is the following: Update Failure The problem is that when I try to execute the fifth step, I am getting error because I do not have Internet access. The computer is properly wired on my rooter, and I have Internet access in any place apart of the shell. This message for example is send it via the live USB. but I cannot access the Internet via the shell. In my shell I try to use this command: sudo dhclient eth0 but the result of this command is the following message sudo: unable to resolve host ubuntu My hosts file has the following content: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 ubuntu # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters ff02::3 ip6-allhosts how can I get connected on the Internet, in order to download the appropriate updates ? UPDATE 1 I just notice, that when I execute the ifconfig I am getting the following warning: Warning: cannot open /proc/net/dev (No such file or directory). Limited output. • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS loops the login screen unless you login as Guest

  I am running a VMWare Player with a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangloin as Guest on my Windows 7. Sometimes I get the shutdown blue screen error in Windows, this time it happened when I was running the Player. When I restarted everything Ubuntu gave the not so unfamiliar in this forum Login Loop in adminstrator login. I login and there's this black screen where I can only read: "piix4...smbus:0.0.0.07.3 Host Smbus controller not enabled" . When I go to the Prompt in root mode it fails to update and only upgraded, specially some plugins ( I think graphic plugins) which also appear in one an error message after quitting the prompt, but they´are successfully installed. They are not the error message. After that I have been working with the Fail/safe Mode recovery panel. When I try to update via Root I get errors like this: W:failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/release.gpg could not resolve 'extras/ubuntu.com There are 8 more like this referring to areas like: -archive/canonical.com -ppa.Launchpad.net -security.Ubuntu.com -Us.archive.ubuntu.com - release.gpg precise-updates/release.gpg precise_backport/release.gpg Final Message: some index files failed to download.....they have been ignored or old files are used. The black screens most of the time pass by too fast for me to pick up any information. But in general I think I have done everything I was able to in the recovery panel including updating network and graphic packages and recovering filesystem packages and the basic stuff ( I am a beginner regarding Linux ) in the root prompt. Now I am stuck in this screen with graphic options: - Run in low-graphics mode just for one session - Reconfigure Graphics - Troubleshoot the error - Exit to console login I am trying to choose to reconfigure graphics but the mouse disappears in the virtual machine screen and sometimes when options change ity´s only the first and last option. ut this happens from the blue without messages. This particular option menu is in the regular GUI style against a black screen in Terminal style. Really strange. Thanx in advance, all is welcome and appreciated.

• Syntax Highlighting for Gherkin (Cucumber Language)

  SyntaxHighlighter is the de facto standard for syntax highlighting on the web. I am currently working on a tool for publishing BDD specifications on the web and I want syntax highlighting. Unfortunately, SyntaxHighlighter does not support Gherkin, the language Cucumber and SpecFlow use to define BDD specifications. Writing new language parsers for SyntaxHighlighter is very easy, so I implemented one for Gherkin. Here is what a syntax highlighted Gherkin file looks like: # A comment here Feature: Some terse yet descriptive text of what is desired In order to realize a named business value As a explicit system actor I want to gain some beneficial outcome which furthers the goal @secretlabel Scenario: Some determinable business situation Given some precondition And some other precondition When some action by the actor And some other action And yet another action Then some testable outcome is achieved And something else we can check happens too Like all SyntaxHighlighter brushes to use this one you need to install the brush (shBrushGherkin.js). • Log php errors in ubuntu

  I followed the setup here: Where is the PHP error log When I look into /var/log/php_errors.log, I could see some PHP errors. PHP Warning: file_get_contents(/var/www/...): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in ... But what I'm trying to see is the error when I removed a semicolon from a statement. That error above has no relation to file from where I removed the semicolon so we can just ignore that. When I access the page with the removed semicolon, I get The website encountered an error while retrieving https://myapp/download/decode/testfile. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly. HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request. But no logs in /var/log/php_errors.log. How do I see the error that usually says which line and which file the process failed? The real reason for trying to see the error is because I have a very huge loop, that throws the HTTP 500 error and I can't see the exact error. I'm just simulation with a removed semicolon to test things out. Other settings: error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED display_errors = On On Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS Update Ok, I managed to get the error message to display. Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_IF in ... However, it's still not logged. It wasn't displaying previously because Cakephp's debug level was at 0. Setting it to 2 displays the message, but no logs.

• Alert for Forms customers running Oracle Forms 10g

  Doesn’t time fly!  While you might have been happily running your Forms 10g applications for about 5 years or so now, the end of premier support is creeping up and you need to start planning for a move to Oracle Forms 11g. The premier support end date in December 31st 2011 and this is documented in Note: 1290974.1 available from MOS. So how much of an impact is this going to be?  Maybe not as much as you think.  While Forms 11g is based on WebLogic Server (WLS),10g was based  on OC4J.  That in itself doesn’t impact Forms much.  In most case it will simply be a recompile of your Forms source files and redeploy on WLS 11g. The Forms builder is the same in 11g as in 10g although its currently not available as a separate download from the main middleware bundle.  You can also look at a WLS Basic license option which means you shouldn’t have to shell out on upgrading to a WLS Suite license option. So what’s the proof in this being a relatively straightforward upgrade?  Well, we’ve had a big uptake of Forms 11g already (which has itself been out for over 2 years).  Read about BT Expedite’s upgrade where “The upgrade of Forms from Oracle Forms 10g to Oracle Forms 11g was relatively simple and on the whole, was just a recompilation”.  Or AMEC where “This has been one of the easiest Forms conversions we’ve ever done and it was a simple recompile in all cases” So if you are on 10g (or even earlier versions) I’d strongly consider starting your planning for an upgrade to 11g now.   Over the years, some of us accumulate lots and lots of music files. Since these come from a variety of sources, they’re not always as neat as they could be. If your music library is in a bit of a jumble with tags missing, oddly named files and incomplete albums, read on to see how easy it is to make it neat once and for all. MusicBrainz is an online database that uses audio “fingerprints” to identify music tracks even when they’re incorrectly labelled. We’ll be using this database through a free client called Picard, available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. So first thing, head on over to Picard’s download page and get the installer. If you use Linux, you can install Picard using your package manager. Once you finish going through the installer, run Picard. Your firewall might pop up an alert telling you Picard is trying to access the Internet; you should agree to let Picard through. You will now see the main Picard interface. • Spell check web pages using Firefox plugin

  Having spelling mistakes on a website degrades customer experience by many times. Developers and website content creators spend good amount of time in going through the content manually to make sure that there are no spelling mistakes. At times few mistakes slip in as manual process is error prone. There are few web services and tool available in the market which provide automated spell checking services but they have certain limitations like – high fees to use the service, limitation on the number of pages they scan for errors, privacy issues, etc. What about a free tool that runs locally on your PC and spell checks unlimited web pages? Here comes Spell Checker extension for  Firefox web browser. This free Firefox extension is developed by  Gaurang, a Software Test Engineer based out in India. Once the extension is installed it adds a new context menu “Check Spelling” and a small icon to Add-On bar. To check spellings of a web page just click on the icon or the context menu and it will highlight all the errors on the page. By default SpellChecker extension uses US English dictionary to find spell mistakes and supports spell checking in other languages with installation of dictionaries.   Creating Site definition in Visual Studio2010 is very easy; it has a built-in Site Definition Project template. Today I will show you how to create Site Definition using Visual Studio 2010.You can download the complete source code here. Create Site Definition Project Choose the Site URL and note that you can only choose Farm Solution the sandboxed solution is greyed out. After the Visual Studio did his magic, you can see the Project structure as follows, it contains default.aspx which is the default page for that site definition, onet.xml contains the actions for creating site using this site template(This is like the elements.xml in the feature) and webtemp_Ybbest.CustomSiteDef.xml register this Site definition in the SharePoint(This is similar to the Feature.xml in feature) Open webtemp_Ybbest.CustomSiteDef.xml and modify ID field as it has to be unique and you can optionally choose to modify other fields as well. Deploy your solution and you can find your site template when you creating your site in either Central admin or Site Creation in Site Actions Menu      Create your site collection using your new site template and then navigate to the site you will find the site created by using your site definition.

• High-Level Application Architecture Question

  So I'm really wanting to improve how I architect the software I code. I want to focus on maintainability and clean code. As you might guess, I've been reading a lot of resources on this topic and all it's doing is making it harder for me to settle on an architecture because I can never tell if my design is the one that the more experienced programmer would've chosen. So I have these requirements: I should connect to one vendor and download form submissions from their API. We'll call them the CompanyA. I should then map those submissions to a schema fit for submitting to another vendor for integration with the email service provider. We'll call them the CompanyB. I should then submit those responses to the ESP (CompanyB) and then instruct the ESP to send that submitter an email. So basically, I'm copying data from one web service to another and then performing an action at the latter web service. I've identified a couple high-level services: The service that downloads data from CompanyA. I called this the CompanyAIntegrator. The service that submits the data to CompanyB. I called this CompanyBIntegrator. So my questions are these: Is this a good design? I've tried to separate the concerns and am planning to use the facade pattern to make the integrators interchangeable if the vendors change in the future. Are my naming conventions accurate and meaningful to you (who knows nothing specific of the project)? Now that I have these services, where should I do the work of taking output from the CompanyAIntegrator and getting it in the format for input to the CompanyBIntegrator? Is this OK to be done in main()? Do you have any general pointers on how you'd code something like this? I imagine this scenario is common to us engineers---especially those working in agencies. Thanks for any help you can give. Learning how to architect well is really mind-cluttering.
