  • Retain Site Background and Switch Pages?

    I was about to redo a Rails site today using AJAX so that the background could remain in place. Then I thought, "that would be exactly like using frames," and then I thought about SEO consequences and I dropped the idea entirely and took a look around the Web. It turns out that few sites -- except for Google itself, which has the link bar at the top -- are doing this. It doesn't look impossible to do, but it's not exactly easy. Aside from Ajaxing, you have to think about updating the query-string and having SEO-friendly links (that actually don't work, but rather make background requests via Javascript). Will any of the new technologies -- HTML5, perhaps -- solve this problem and allow us to have a Web with background colors (and other static elements) that do not disappear momentarily between page refreshes? On the other hand, why are few devs doing this with current technologies? Is it just not a big deal, too complicated to implement, or....?

  • Google Chrome window.open height includes URL bar

    When we open a window using: window.open("/calendar",'calendar','width=950,height=576,titlebar=no,statusbar=no,menubar=no,resizable=no,scrollbars=no'); Firefox 3 and IE 7 open it to have a content area height of 576 plus the browser items (URL bar, status bar, etc). Chrome however opens it to have a total height of 576 meaning a scrollbar appears to the right of the content (and then the bottom because the width is now reduced). How can I get around this? It's for a heavy layout part of a web app so it's not just a matter of "let the user scroll", the client doesn't want that. Has anyone come across this? I don't mind browser sniffing and opening the window bigger, but I know that's yucky these days.

  • How do I open a different page depending upon if user selects open in new tab or not.

    I am opening links on a page into an IFrame. But if the user right clicks and selects open in new window that will ruin the look I want since it will not have the parent page holding it. So is there a way to open the page as i have it working now when the user clicks on the link but if they choose to open in new tab to have it load the current page all over again in the new window with the link they selected loaded into the IFrame.     Hi, I have a web page that has several divs embedded and I'm having a problem when a table has too many rows; when it does, the containing div falls short and bottom ones are displayed on top of the background instead.   • How would I get an img element to render under a background-image in CSS.

    Basically, I am trying to put a semi-transparent div over an image to serve as a background for text for a slideshow. Unfortunately, the browser seems intent on always rendering the img over the background-image. Is there any way to fix this? Here is my current CSS for the semi-transparent div: #slideshow .info { height: 80px; margin-top: -80px; background: url(../../images/slideshow-info-pixel.png) repeat; } ... with slideshow-info-pixel.png being a single pixel, 50% opacity, PNG 24. I have so far tried z-index and the CSS must be compatible with IE6.

    I am using 2 images in a form to sort out query results from the database. The form is submitted using the POST method. When i click on the first image, the query results have to be sorted in ascending order, and when i click on the second, the results have to be sorted in the descending order. This is the code for the form: <form name="" action="" method="post"> <input type="hidden" name="typep" value="price" /> <input type="image" name="sort" value="asc" src="images/asc-ar.png" /> <input type="image" name="sort" value="desc" src="images/dsc-ar.png" /> </form> Now this is the code for checking if the $_REQUEST['sort'] variable is set and therefore whether sorting is required or not. if ($_REQUEST['sort'] != "") { $sort = $_REQUEST['sort']; $typep = $_REQUEST['typep']; //query to be executed depending on values of $sort and $typep } Firefox does detect the $_REQUEST['typep'] variable but not the $_REQUEST['sort'] one. This works perfectly in Chrome though. When i test the site in Firefox, it doesn't detect the $_REQUEST['sort'] variable and therefore the if condition evaluates to false and the search results don't get sorted.

    I am working on a project where I am required to build a page somewhat similar to the one you see when you visit a website like blockbuster. When you click on browse more you are taken to a page with a bar on top with different page numbers and a drop down to select the number of pages you want to view on that page. I want to include a feature like that on my page but I am not sure where to start. In my page I have list of 200 items which I want to display page by page. I was suggested to use custom tags, but is there a more simpler or efficient way to create that functionality. My web application uses Spring MVC framework and is coded entirely in Java.   • How to make all controls of a column the same width

    Hi I need to know if there's any way of making all controls of a column the same width, and that all these controls are as wide as the cells that contain them. I added a demo on JSFiddle with the controls I'm using. I tried using size for the input texts and style="width:" for the selects , and even though I managed to make them the same width,(it doesn't seem to work in Chrome) it's kinda difficult , that's why I'd like to know if there is any more straightforward way to do the same thing Any ideas or insights?

    Hi All, I want to upload files to a server which is also owned by me. I could think of two ways, of how this can be achieved. Method1: Use HTTP POST request to upload the files. The standard way of uploading files. Method2: Its a two step process. First the client does a POST request with all the details of the file, to the server. Then the server issues Get request(s) onto the client to get the contents of the file. Here method2 seems to be more secure, as the server is in control. The server can request data from the server only when the server feels it to be appropriate, and restrict the amount of data that needs to be transferred. Still i am confused as i am not an expert in this area. Anyone with more hindsight thoughts on this can you please share. Thanks

  • Why isn't this button firing the anchor tag?

    My idea is to press a button that takes me to a web page. I've created a thing that dynamically creates a button and an anchor tag. When the button is clicked, I want it to "click"/fire up the anchor tag.. I've uploaded a demo to my site, when you try it out just leave everything as it is. Click the first button then the add button right away.. then try to click the dynamically created button. Nothing happens, but if you watch the source you can find an anchor tag with the ID FL1000, I've set it up so that the anchor tag gets the ID from the value of the created button + 1000 just incase I need to use that ID.. Thanks guys... edit: this is optimized for google chrome, haven't tried it out with other browser.
