• Five development tools I can't live without

  When applying to join Geeks with Blogs I had to specify the development tools I use every day. That got me thinking, it's taken a long time to whittle my tools of choice down to the selection I use, so it might be worth sharing. Before I begin, I appreciate we all have our preferred development tools, but these are the ones that work for me. Microsoft Visual Studio Microsoft Visual Studio has been my development tool of choice for more years than I care to remember. I first used this when it was Visual C++ 1.5 (hats off to those who started on 1.0) and by 2.2 it had everything I needed from a C++ IDE. Versions 4 and 5 followed and if I had to guess I would expect more Windows applications are written in VC++ 6 and VB6 than any other language. Then came the not so great versions Visual Studio .Net 2002 (7.0) and 2003 (7.1). If I'm honest I was still using v6. 2005 was better and 2008 was simply brilliant. Everything worked, the compiler was super fast and I was happy again...then came 2010...oh dear. 2010 is a big step backwards for me. It's not encouraging for my upcoming WPF exploits that 2010 is fronted in WPF technology, with the forever growing Find/Replace dialog, the issues with C++ intellisense, and the buggy debugger. That said it is still my tool of choice but I hope they sort the issue in SP1. I've tried other IDEs like Visual Age and Eclipse, but for me Visual Studio is the best. A really great tool. Liquid XML Studio XML development is a tricky business. The W3C standards are often difficult to get to the bottom of so it's great to have a graphical tool to help. I first used Liquid Technologies 5 or 6 years back when I needed to process XML data in C++. Their excellent XML Data Binding tool has an easy to use Wizard UI (as compared to Castor or JAXB command line tools) and allows you to generate code from an XML Schema. So instead of having to deal with untyped nodes like with a DOM parser, instead you get an Object Model providing a custom API in C++, C#, VB etc. More recently they developed a graphical XML IDE with XML Editor, XSLT, XQuery debugger and other XML tools. So now I can develop an XML Schema graphically, click a button to generate a Sample XML document, and click another button to run the Wizard to generate code including a Sample Application that will then load my Sample XML document into the generated object model. This is a very cool toolset. Note: XML Data Binding is nothing to do with WPF Data Binding, but I hope to cover both in more detail another time. .Net Reflector Note: I've just noticed that starting form the end of February 2011 this will no longer be a free tool !! .Net Reflector turns .Net byte code back into C# source code. But how can it work this magic? Well the clue is in the name, it uses reflection to inspect a compiled .Net assembly. The assembly is compiled to byte code, it doesn't get compiled to native machine code until its needed using a just-in-time (JIT) compiler. The byte code still has all of the information needed to see classes, variables. methods and properties, so reflector gathers this information and puts it in a handy tree. I have used .Net Reflector for years in order to understand what the .Net Framework is doing as it sometimes has undocumented, quirky features. This really has been invaluable in certain instances and I cannot praise enough kudos on the original developer Lutz Roeder. Smart Assembly In order to stop nosy geeks looking at our code using a tool like .Net Reflector, we need to obfuscate (mess up) the byte code. Smart Assembly is a tool that does this. Again I have used this for a long time. It is very quick and easy to use. Another excellent tool. Coincidentally, .Net Reflector and Smart Assembly are now both owned by Red Gate. Again kudos goes to the original developer Jean-Sebastien Lange. TortoiseSVN SVN (Apache Subversion) is a Source Control System developed as an open source project. TortoiseSVN is a graphical UI wrapper over SVN that hooks into Windows Explorer to enable files to be Updated, Committed, Merged etc. from the right click menu. This is an essential tool for keeping my hard work safe! Many years ago I used Microsoft Source Safe and I disliked CVS type systems. But TortoiseSVN is simply the best source control tool I have ever used. --- So there you have it, my top 5 development tools that I use (nearly) every day and have helped to make my working life a little easier. I'm sure there are other great tools that I wish I used but have never heard of, but if you have not used any of the above, I would suggest you check them out as they are all very, very cool products. #

The wireless spectrum is a continuum of the electromagnetic waves used for data and voice communication. The wireless spectrum falls between 9KHZ and 300 GHZ. Characteristics of Wireless Transmission Antennas Each type of wireless service requires an antenna specifically designed for that service. The service’s specification determine the antenna’s power output, frequency, and radiation pattern. A directional antenna issues wireless signals along a single direction. An omnidirectional antenna issues and receives wireless signals with equal strength and clarity in all directions The geographical area that an antenna or wireless system can reach is known as its range Signal Propagation LOS (line of sight) uses the least amount of energy and results in the reception of the clearest possible signal. When there is an obstacle in the way, the signal may… pass through the object or be obsrobed by the object or may be subject to reflection, diffraction or scattering. Reflection – waves encounter an object and bounces off it. Diffraction – signal splits into secondary waves when it encounters an obstruction Scattering – is the diffusion or the reflection in multiple different directions of a signal Signal Degradation Fading occurs as a signal hits various objects. Because of fading, the strength of the signal that reaches the receiver is lower than the transmitted signal strength. The further a signal moves from its source, the weaker it gets (this is called attenuation) Signals are also affected by noise – the electromagnetic interference) Interference can distort and weaken a wireless signal in the same way that noise distorts and weakens a wired signal. Frequency Ranges Older wireless devices used the 2.4 GHZ band to send and receive signals. This had 11 communication channels that are unlicensed. Newer wireless devices can also use the 5 GHZ band which has 24 unlicensed bands Narrowband, Broadband, and Spread Spectrum Signals Narrowband – a transmitter concentrates the signal energy at a single frequency or in a very small range of frequencies Broadband – uses a relatively wide band of the wireless spectrum and offers higher throughputs than narrowband technologies The use of multiple frequencies to transmit a signal is known as spread-spectrum technology. In other words a signal never stays continuously within one frequency range during its transmission. One specific implementation of spread spectrum is FHSS (frequency hoping spread spectrum). Another type is known as DSS (direct sequence spread spectrum) Fixed vs. Mobile Each type of wireless communication falls into one of two categories Fixed – the location of the transmitted and receiver do not move (results in energy saved because weaker signal strength is possible with directional antennas) Mobile – the location can change WLAN (Wireless LAN) Architecture There are two main types of arrangements Adhoc – data is sent directly between devices – good for small local devices Infrastructure mode – a wireless access point is placed centrally, that all devices connect with 802.11 WLANs The most popular wireless standards used on contemporary LANs are those developed by IEEE’s 802.11 committee. Over the years several distinct standards related to wireless networking have been released. Four of the best known standards are also referred to as Wi-Fi. They are…. 802.11b 802.11a 802.11g 802.11n These four standards share many characteristics. i.e. All 4 use half duplex signalling Follow the same access method Access Method 802.11 standards specify the use of CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) to access a shared medium. Using CSMA/CA before a station begins to send data on an 802.11 network, it checks for existing wireless transmissions. If the source node detects no transmission activity on the network, it waits a brief period of time and then sends its transmission. If the source does detect activity, it waits a brief period of time before checking again. The destination node receives the transmission and, after verifying its accuracy, issues an acknowledgement (ACT) packet to the source. If the source receives the ACK it assumes the transmission was successful, – if it does not receive an ACK it assumes the transmission failed and sends it again. Association Two types of scanning… Active – station transmits a special frame, known as a prove, on all available channels within its frequency range. When an access point finds the probe frame, it issues a probe response. Passive – wireless station listens on all channels within its frequency range for a special signal, known as a beacon frame, issued from an access point – the beacon frame contains information necessary to connect to the point. Re-association occurs when a mobile user moves out of one access point’s range and into the range of another. In 1998 other manufacturers joined Ericsson in the Special Interest Group (SIG) whose aim was to refine and standardize the technology. Bluetooth was designed to be used on small networks composed of personal communications devices.   Defining scope for Record Count functoid: Problem: One of the most common scenarios in BizTalk is calculating the record count of repeating structure. BizTalk has come up with an advanced functoid called Record Count functoid which will give the record count for the repeating structure however you cannot define the scope for a Record Count functoid. Because Record Count functoid accepts exactly one parameter which can be repeating record or field element.   If somebody don’t know what “scope” means I will explain with a simple example. Consider that we have a source schema having a structure Country -> State -> City. Country will have various states and each state will have different cities. Now you want to calculate no. of cities present in each state. Here scope is defined at the parent node “State”. Traditional Record Count functoid will give the total no. of cities present in the source message and not the State level city count.   Source Schema:   Destination Schema:   Soultion #1: As the title indicates we are not going to add one more parameter to the record count functoid. Instead of that, we are going to achieve the solution with the help of Scripting functoid with Inline XSLT script. XSLT is basically the transformation language used in the mapping.     “No.OfCities” indicates the destination field name to which we are going to send the value. In count(City), “count” refers to built in XPath function used in XSLT and “City” refers to source schema record name. Here you can find the list of built-in functions available in XSLT.   The mapping will look like as follows:   The 2 Record Count functoids used in this map will give the total number of states and total number of cities as that of input message.   Soultion #2:  If someone doesn’t like XSLT code and they wish to achieve the solution using functoids alone, then here is another solution.   Use logical Existence functoid to check whether “City” exist or not Connect the output of Logical Existence functoid to the Value Mapping functoid with second parameter as constant “1”. Hence if the first parameter is TRUE it will give the output as “1”. Connect the output of Value Mapping functoid to the Cumulative Sum functoid with scope as “1”   This will calculate the City count at the state level. • How to stop an IOException error using whilst using a combination of jython, pyro and ant?

  So the wonderful low down on this doozie of a problem: short version: We are building a distribution system for this item of software we're using. Basically we take out build artifact, store it on an ftp server which passes it to multiple clients which execute scripts to patch their servers. Long version: 1 distribution server multiple client servers software: jython 2.5.1, ant 1.8.0, pyro 3.10 The distribution server has an FTP server and a PYRO client running on it. Each client server has a PRYO server running on it. When the PYRO client is told to start the patch procedure then it reads a machine list which contains a list of all the client servers. Then connects to each of the PYRO servers one by one and execute the patch procedure. The procedure is: getPatch (gets the latest patch for that server), StopServer (stops the software that may or maynot be accessing what needs to be patched), Apply patch, StartServer. Each of the processes calls an ANT script that passes with some folder names and other config passes around. The fun part happens when you go to apply the patch. See below for error log. I had to remove the folder names because of NDA reasons. This is where it gets interesting. Running each section of the procedure individually. i.e. running getPatch, StopServer, etc. one at a time manually. This bug doesn't happen. Physically goign to the machine and running the processes it doesn't happen. Only when we call all 4 of the processes one after the other. It occurs during the ApplyPatch phase when an ANT replace script is called on multiple files. We think it might have something to do with the JVM keeping hold of the file for a split second or 2. however this is meant to have been patched according to the bug notes on ant. so in short: I'm trying to generate a suitable build file for ant - using eclipses built-in export-ant buildfile feature as a starting block.   Hi, I created an GWT project in eclipse. Now I tried to implement openId with using the openid4java library. I imported the .jar files via properties--java build path: openid4java-0.9.5.jar lib/*.jar In addition I copied the .jar files into the war/WEB-INF/lib directory. The problem at hand comes up when I call the authenticate() method. Then I get a: HTTP ERROR 500 Problem accessing /openid/openid. • In a SQL XDL File, how do I read the waitresource attribute on process nodes which are deadlocking?

  On SQL Server 2005, I'm getting a deadlock when updating two different keys in the same table. note from below that these two waitresources have the same beginning part, but different ending parts. waitresource="KEY: 6:72057594090487808 (d900ed5a6cc6)" and waitresource="KEY: 6:72057594090487808 (d900fb5261bb)" These two keys are locking, and I need to figure out why. • RRAS on Windows Server 2012 box

  I'm trying to add the RRAS VPN roles into my server 2012 box. The error I am getting is: install-windowsfeature : The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed. Installation of one or more roles, role services, or features failed. One or several parent features are disabled so current feature can not be enabled. • Installation stuck on "Installation Type" screen

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 with Windows 7 from a CD. I am using an HP Pavilion dm4. I've never used Ubuntu (or any Linux) before. Everything goes alright until I get to the "Installation Type" screen. Instead of giving me options, it just has a blank menu, and all the buttons are disabled. When I click "Continue", it gives me an error saying that it can't find the root or something like that. The trial version works fine, but I can't actually install it. Everything on the trial version is really slow, presumably because everything is on the CD or the Windows partition. I did some research, but the only post I could find was http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870478 Where the only advice is to format the entire drive, which I'm not willing to do. Any suggestions? I'm downloading 10.04 right now and I'm going to try with that instead. EDIT: 10.04 didn't work either. I got to the partitioning screen and got the same problem. I read some more forums, loaded up 11.10 trial from the disk, opened the Terminal and typed sudo apt-get remove dmraid and then y. Then I was actually able to see something on the "Installation type" page: "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" or "Something else". Which is weird, since Windows 7 should be installed. When I click Something Else, I get: /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1 (ntfs) (208 MB) (69 MB used) /dev/sdb2 (ntfs) (477542 MB) (unknown used) /dev/sdb3 (ntfs) (18085 MB) (16094 MB used) /dev/sdb4 (fat32) (4265 MB) (3084 MB used) I have no idea what any of this means. Also, my device for boot loader installation changed from /dev/sda to /dev/sda ATA SAMSUNG MZMPA032 (32.0 GB)

• Having IIS remote management problem with my vista machine managing Server 2008 IIS 7.5

  I am trying to use IIS 7 Remote Management installed on Vista Ultimate SP1. Connection is to IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008 Webserver R2. Tried on both full & core install. When I connect up, the console wants to download and install new features. Microsoft.Web.Management.IisClient 7.5.0.0 Microsoft.Web.Management.AspnetClient 7.5.0.0 I check the boxes and click OK and it downloads them and asks if I want to install them, but after I click run it just quits. I tried just choosing one or the other, same thing. I ran IIS Remote tool as administrator. These features installed correctly on my XP machine. Any ideas? UPDATE : If I had any Rep I would offer like 500 rep to get this fixed!

• SOLVED:Bootloader isn't executable booting XEN PV Guest with virtual-manager

  I am going insane with an error I am encountering while trying to install a PV Guest of Debian Wheezy on a Ubuntu Server precise Xen default build with libvirt. The steps I take with virt-manager are the following: 1.Net install via: http://ftp.es.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/installer-amd64/ 2.Install process is flawless, installed via VNC over virt-manager 3.When the VM starts I get the following error: Error starting domain: POST operation failed: xend_post: error from xen daemon: (xend.err "Bootloader isn't executable") Most answers i have found on google say that I need to edit the VM's .cfg file and correct the path to pygrub but virt-manager does not seem to create this file (I have searched the entire drive with "find". Another detail is that virsh list --all shows no VMs (Not even dom0) while the command xm list shows all of them. Any help is much appreciated. EDIT: Connected remotely via virsh: virsh -c xen+ssh://user@ip dumpxml vmname Found line: /usr/bin/pygrub ln -s /usr/lib/xen-4.1/bin/pygrub /usr/bin/pygrub Now it works. If anyone can think of a better solution give me a shout. Cheers

• Trying to make a custom Arch-based Linux distro with larch

  I'm all set up with a spiffy Arch installation in a virtual machine, and now I want to turn it into a live ISO. When I heard about larch, I thought it would be the perfect tool to turn my existing installation into something I could distribute. However, I can't get larch to install properly. I followed the installation instructions on the website, which said to download and run the larch-setup script. When I run it, though, it installs the larch profiles and libraries but doesn't install the executable programs. Here's a screenshot of the errors I get when larch-setup tries to install the executables. I'd greatly appreciate any clues to what is going wrong here, or suggestions for alternative ways to turn my customized Arch installation into an ISO! Thanks!

• Is it possible to update from Windows 8 Enterprise to version 8.1 without having to reinstall the OS?

  Today we are told that the 8.1 update, (a version which allows you to keep apps, settings, and files), is officially being rolled out worldwide. No longer will you have to do a clean OS install, to go from 8 to 8.1. But I don't see the update inside my (Enterprise's) desktop 'Windows Update' program, and furthermore, Microsoft themselves say: If you’re running [Enterprise], you can't install the free update to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 from the Store. However they DO also say: If you installed Windows 8 using an MSDN ISO, you might be able to install Windows 8.1 using a similar ISO from MSDN But it does not specify whether this method allows seamless apps and settings-retaining upgrading or not. Is there a method for doing it (whether official or unofficial - perhaps confirmed via experience of updating with some sort of Enterprise 8.1 ISO), or is an update indeed expected for the Enterprise version via the desktop 'Windows Update' program? A further observation which may help: the page I cite refers to the 'Windows Store', which is the 'Modern UI' app store and NOT the desktop 'Windows Update' program which typically updates desktop Office and desktop Windows alike.

• Accessing and Updating Data in ASP.NET: Filtering Data Using a CheckBoxList

  Filtering Database Data with Parameters, an earlier installment in this article series, showed how to filter the data returned by ASP.NET's data source controls. In a nutshell, the data source controls can include parameterized queries whose parameter values are defined via parameter controls. For example, the SqlDataSource can include a parameterized SelectCommand, such as: SELECT * FROM Books WHERE Price > @Price. Here, @Price is a parameter; the value for a parameter can be defined declaratively using a parameter control. ASP.NET offers a variety of parameter controls, including ones that use hard-coded values, ones that retrieve values from the querystring, and ones that retrieve values from session, and others. Perhaps the most useful parameter control is the ControlParameter, which retrieves its value from a Web control on the page. Using the ControlParameter we can filter the data returned by the data source control based on the end user's input. While the ControlParameter works well with most types of Web controls, it does not work as expected with the CheckBoxList control. The ControlParameter is designed to retrieve a single property value from the specified Web control, but the CheckBoxList control does not have a property that returns all of the values of its selected items in a form that the CheckBoxList control can use. Moreover, if you are using the selected CheckBoxList items to query a database you'll quickly find that SQL does not offer out of the box functionality for filtering results based on a user-supplied list of filter criteria. The good news is that with a little bit of effort it is possible to filter data based on the end user's selections in a CheckBoxList control. This article starts with a look at how to get SQL to filter data based on a user-supplied, comma-delimited list of values. Next, it shows how to programmatically construct a comma-delimited list that represents the selected CheckBoxList values and pass that list into the SQL query. • On improving commit practices

  I was thinking about ways to improving my commit practices. Is there any co-relation between no. of source code lines and no. of commits? In a recent project that I was involved in, I was going at 30 commits per 1000 lines. One typical file from the project has these stats language: JavaScript total commits that include this file: 32 total lines: 1408 source lines: 1140 comment lines: 98 no. of function declarations: 28 other declarations: 8 Another file has these... Language: Python total commits that include this file: 17 total lines: 933 source lines: 730 comment lines: 80 classes: 1 methods: 10 I also think that no. of commits is more related to no. of features or no. of changes to the code and less to the no. of lines. The general git community motto is make short commits and commit often. So, do you really think about you commit strategy before you start the project. For that matter, is there anything like commit strategy? If so, what's yours?

• Cannot update Windows update

  When I try to get latest windows updates, windows (7 home) tells me that it needs to update the windows update. And that the Update window needs to be restarted in order to do that. After that restart I get error "WindowsUpdate 8007006D". Googlin that code doesnt' give me any more information.   By default, JDBC data type’s objects are wrapped with a WebLogic wrapper. This allows for features like debugging output and track connection usage to be done by the server. The wrapping can be turned off by setting this value to false. This improves performance, in some cases significantly, and allows for the application to use the native driver objects directly. Tip: How to Disable Wrapping in WLS Administration Console You can use the Administration Console to disable data type wrapping for following JDBC data sources in bifoundation_domain domain: Data Source Name bip_datasource mds-owsm EPMSystemRegistry   To disable wrapping for each JDBC data source (as stated in above table): 1.     If you have not already done so, in the Change Center of the Administration Console, click Lock & Edit. 2.     In the Domain Structure tree, expand Services, then select Data Sources. 3.     On the Summary of Data Sources page, click the data source name for example “mds-owsm”. 4.     Select the Configuration: Connection Pool tab. 5.     Scroll down and click Advanced to show the advanced connection pool options. 6.     In Wrap Data Types, deselect the checkbox to disable wrapping. 7.     Click Save. 8.     To activate these changes, in the Change Center of the Administration Console, click Activate Changes. Important Note: This change does not take effect immediately—it requires the server be restarted.
