• Generic tool to configure startup applications on Unix

  Is there an automated deployment tool that manages startup applications on a variety of machines, especially the Unices? Or is the only hope to study the nuts and bolts of each Unix (osx, linux, solaris, hpux, aix) on how to configure applications to launch on system startup? I want to run them as a specific user, instead of root. At the moment, I run them all within a screen session .. which is a hassle, as this requires manual intervention every time the machine is rebooted for some reason. Ideally, I am looking for a tool that would read, say, ~/.startup-programs which file contains, on each line, the command line to launch the needed daemons. And this tool should work on OSX, Linux, Solaris, HPUX and AIX ... writing the appropriate startup scripts for each platform.

• How to add a shutdown script (not by using gpedit.msc or active directory)?

  I have created a script I want to deploy on my XP workstations as a shutdown script. I know I can add my script as a shutdown script with the UI (gpedit.msc), but I want to automate the deployment of my script. My workstations are not part of a Windows domain. I will deploy with OCS Inventory. I tried to add entries to the Windows registry, but this doesn't work. I don't see what I added when I run gpedit.msc. If I add something with gpedit.msc, this seem to overwrite what I added manually into the registry.

• What is wrong with my expect script?

  I'm trying to learn how to use the expect command, to help me automate deployment of some software via shell scripts, and figured I start with something simple to get me started. I've created a file in my home dir called 'foo' using: touch foo And I've created the following script saved as test.exp #!/usr/bin/expect spawn rm -i foo expect "rm: remove regular empty file `foo'?" send "y\r" When I run the script using ./test.exp, it spawns the rm command, but it doesn't appear to send the Y and carriage return. I know I don't have a typo in the expect string, as I've used copy and paste to put in the script. What am I doing wrong?

• Windows XP autostart process as administrator

  I am looking for a way with which i can autostart a certain program on logon of a user with user-rights with administrator-rights. I already tried using task scheduler but it didn't work out because you got to enter a username with format machine\user and our pxe-image-deployment-system automatically patches the machine names so the entered domain\user stopped working. UPDATE: the runas.exe command does not seem appropiate for this task, too. If using /user:machinename\Administrator /savcred it is invalid after imaging. What one user suggested was using .\Administrator or localhost\Administrator but both didn't work on my XP SP3 machines.

• Simple way of getting the Last.fm artist image for recently listened songs?

  On the Last.fm website, your recently listened track include the 34x34 (or whatever size) image at the left of each song. However, in the RSS feed that they give you, no image URLs are provided for the songs. I was wondering if there was a good way of figuring out the ID for the image that needs to be used for that artist and displaying it based on the data that we're given. I know it is possible to load the artist page from their website and then grab the image values from JavaScript, but that seems overly complicated and would probably take quite some time to do. • JSoup - Select only one listobject

  I'm trying to extract some certain data from a website using JSoup and Java. So far I've been successful in what I'm trying to achieve. <ul class="beverageFacts"> <li><span>Årgång</span><strong>**2009**&nbsp;</strong></li> I want to extract what is inside the ** in the above HTML. I can do this by using the code that follows in JSoup: doc.select("ul.beverageFacts li:lt(1) strong"); I'm using the lt(1) because there are several more list items following that I want to omit. Now to my problem; there's an optional information tab on the site I'm extracting data from, and it also has a class called "beverageFacts". My code will at the moment extract that data too, which I don't want it to do. The code is further down in the source of the website, and I've tried to use the indexer :lt(1) here aswell, but it wont work. <div id="beverageMoreFacts" style="display: block"> <ul class="beverageFacts"><li class="half"> <span> Färg</span><strong> Ljusgul färg.</strong> My overall result is that I extract "2009 Ljusgul färg." instead of only "2009". How can I write my code so it will only extract the first part, which it succesfully does, and omits the rest? • Trying to write up a C daemon, but don't know enough C to continue

  Okay, so I want this daemon to run in the background with little to no interaction. I plan to have it work with Apache, lighttpd, etc to send the session & request information to allow C to generate a website from an object DB, saving will have to be an option so, you can start the daemon with an existing DB but will not save to it unless you login to the admin area and enable, and restart the daemon. Summary of the daemon: Load a database from file. Have a function to restart the daemon. Allow Apache, lighttpd, etc to get necessary data about the request and session. A varible to allow the database to be saved to the file, otherwise it will only be stored in ram. If it is set to save back to the file, then only have neccessary data in ram. Use sql-light for the database file. Build a webpage from some template files. $(myVar) for getting variables.   Whenever I try to parse XML with special characters such as o or ???? I get an error. The xml documents claims to use UTF-8 encoding but that does not seem to be the case. Here is what the troublesome text looks like when I view the XML in Firefox: Bleach: The Diamond Dust Rebellion - MÅ? Hitotsu no HyÅ?rinmaru; Bleach - The DiamondDust Rebellion - Mou Hitotsu no Hyourinmaru On the actual website, Å? is actually the character o. <br /> One day, Doraemon and his friends meet Professor Mangetsu (æº?æ??å??ç??, Professor Mangetsu?), who studies magic and magical beings such as goblins, and his daughter Miyoko (ç¾?å¤?å­?, Miyoko?), and are warned of the dangerous approximation of the &quot;star of the Underworld&quot; to the Earth&#039;s orbit.<br /> <br /> And once again, on the actual website, those characters appear as ???? and ???. The actual XML file is formatted properly other than those special characters, which certainly do not appear to be using the UTF-8 encoding. Is there a way to get NSXML to parse these XML files?

• Is there a way to automatically disconnect a notebook from the eletrical power-supply?

  I know this looks like weird and useless, but let me explain... I'm running Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) to make some tests on Windows 8 Preview. One of it's assessment is the "Battery Run Down Test", which tests battery consumption with some procesor load. I'm trying to "automate" in some way this test, I mean, I wish to execute it without any human intervention (such as manually disconecting the eletric power source to leave my notebook running only from batteries to run this assessment). So, there is some ACPI API, Windows API or even an easy bat shell/VBScript/Powershell command to do this? Does someone already made something like? PS: I'm asking this because I couldn't found any answer, but maybe someone here would have any tip...

• Why does my CGI script keep redirecting links to localhost?

  Visit this page http://online-file-sharing.net/tos.html and click one of the bottom footer links. It redirects you to your localhost in the address bar. I have no idea why it does this. When I point my browser directly to the CGI file it works but it brings me to my localhost again. I'm hosting this website on my own server, which is this computer, and using XAMPP if this information helps. I'm also using DynDNS as my nameservers. I hope you can give me some insight.

• Is CakePhp 'standards compliant' when generating HTML, Forms, etc?

  So I've been reading a lot of "Designing with Web Standards" and really enjoying it. I'm a big CakePhp user, and as I look at the source for various form elements that Cake creates with its FormHelper, I see all sorts of extraneous In the book, he promotes semantic HTML, and writing your markup as simple / generic as possible. So my question is, am I better writing my own HTML in these situations? I really want to work in compliance with XHTML and CSS standards, and it seems I'd spend just as much time (if not more) cleaning up Cakes HTML, when I could just write my own thoughts? p.s. • Is there a simple way to "roll your own forms" for mysql in php, for example in jquery?

  I've been googling around for a really simple way of making what is, in effect, nothing more than an enhanced phpMySql. In a mysql database, I have: Name, address, phone, website etc, plus 2 or 3 custom fields. This data is pulled out to make a website. All I want is to be able to make a freeform form, a bit like Access, but for the web, and the only thing I want to do over and above normal field editing would be to have a list of when I contact them, what was said, and perhaps a reminder when the next action is due. I've looked at so many CRMs my mind is boggling, and they all do WAY more than I need. I don't have leads or accounts, all I have is the need to make sure than when I update the person's details, and for that data to be in the same DB as my site is generate from. I'm happy to learn if I can get pointed in the right direction, and I have a feeling that something like what I want might lie in the direction of jquery. It's just that there's so much good jquery stuff about, I can't see the wood for the trees! Thanks.

• Could a computer act (dependably) as a wireless router for 200+ clients? [closed]

  That is, I have a Core 2 Duo E7500 at 2.93GHz, with 2GB memory. I plan to install either Windows Server 2012 or Zeroshell 2.0RC1, and it also (planning to) includes two PCIe Wireless Card Adapters. It also has one ethernet port, and I will connect that to another machine which will be a Database and a Web Server. My plan is to have a corporate level wireless intranet with 200+ clients. I cannot afford to buy routers because I want to operate at zero costs as possible, utilizing my available resources. Is that plan plausible? Also, what minimum specs should my wireless card have? @SvenW: Oh, I meant corporate on the deployment level. I am still an undergraduate and this is more of an educational and expiremental work than an actual project. I got Windows Server 2012 for free though, and this isn't actually for commercial use.

• Am I making the right choice in choosing Yii as my PHP Framework?

  I am about to begin development of a new website and have been doing research on PHP Frameworks. I'm not an advanced PHP developer, but I have been developing web sites and apps (in asp.net) for a few years now. My website will primarily be AJAX-based (using jQuery) and making lots of calls to web services. After some research, here's what I came up with: CakePHP: Originally started developing in this, but found it too complex. The fact that it forces you to use and learn all this new stuff just to use it was a bit daunting, so I put it aside for the time being. Zend: The performance of the framework leaves me a bit skeptical, but I heard it has great support for creating web services. I also heard it was a bit complex. CodeIgniter: No real reason for not using this one. Based on what I've read CodeIgniter and Yii are very similar, but Yii is a bit faster and doesn't have un-needed code for PHP4 (since I plan on developing exclusively in PHP5). As far as Yii, the only things that scare me about it are that it is newer than the other frameworks so it has a smaller community. It also doesn't seem to have a ton of web service support (only SOAP, from my understanding) as opposed to Zend. So my questions come down to: Should these things worry me? (not as big of a community, poor web service support) Is there anything else I should look into? Is my choice of Yii over the other frameworks ok for a primarily AJAX-based web app? Bara

• What is the equivalent to Master Views from ASP.NET in PHP?

  I'm used to working in ASP.NET / ASP.NET MVC and now for class I have to make a PHP website. What is the equivalent to Master Views from ASP.NET in the PHP world? Ideally I would like to be able to define a page layout with something like: Master.php <html> <head> <title>My WebSite</title> <?php headcontent?> </head> <body> <?php bodycontent?> </body> </html> and then have my other PHP pages inherit from Master, so I can insert into those predefined places. Is this possible in PHP? Right now I have the top half of my page defined as "Header.html" and the bottom half is "footer.html" and I include_once both of them on each page I create. However, this isn't ideal for when I want to be able to insert into multiple places on my master page such as being able to insert content into the head. Can someone skilled in PHP point me in the right direction?

• Moving front page (cursebird or foursquare)

  Ok so I'll be honest, I have a good amount of experience with php/mysql, I've just started learning jQuery and I've done very little, but some with ajax. So using the terms ajax/jquery interchangeably are a bit confusing to me. Anyway as the title suggest I have a website with 5 items, and I want them to move (meaning, if a more recent one is entered, remove the last item, and put the new one on top), they are 5 of the most recent items in the database table, now I've coded jquery as a test so it fades out the last one, the whole thing moves down, makes room at the top, and fades in a new one. However, it's a test and has 0 interaction with the database, the one that fades in is just in a hidden div. So the jQuery part is taken care of. So I'm unsure how to go about this, I was thinking maybe have ajax check a website off the page that has those 5 items in raw format, and if they change then to refresh? Not looking for a "plz code 4 me" answer, just the concept of how it would work, or some links to get off to the right start. edit - Also, the 5 items are ranked, so if I click item 3 I need it to move above item 2 refreshlessly, so this causes a whole other issue I assume.

• SVN command that returns wether a user has a valid login for a repository?

  Hi there, I'm trying to find out an SVN command that would return some kind of true / false value depending on wether the user running it has access to a given repository. I'm building a tool for automated deployment and part of the process is checking out the code from the SVN repository. I'd like to find out if the user running the tool has a valid login already. If there's no valid login, just show a message and exit the tool (handling the SVN login internally is not an option at the moment). Plan B would be parsing the file in svn.simple looking for the repo URL, but thought about asking first. Thanks, Juan

• Adding a div element inside a panel?

  I'm working with GWT and I'm trying to add google-maps to my website. Since I want to use google-maps V3 I'm using JSNI. In order to display the map in my website I need to create a div element with id="map" and get it in the initialization function of the map. I did so, and it worked out fine but its location on the webpage is funny and I want it to be attached to a panel I'm creating in my code. So my question is how can I do it? Can I create a div somehow with GWT inside a panel ? I've tried to do create a new HTMLPanel like this: runsPanel.add(new HTMLPanel("<div id=\"map\"></div>")); Where runsPanel is a the panel I want to to be attached to. • List of fonts installed by default in versions of Windows?

  I've been seeing more and more websites using fancy antialiased fonts. Every time I hit one, I think to myself "hmm, what web-safe font is that?" - but after looking at the CSS I typically find some font name in quotes, like "Palatino Linotype". Obviously not web-safe, but according to the Wikipedia article, "Palatino Linotype is shipped with Windows 2000 or later, and Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003." So that covers what, 95% of users that might visit your website? And thanks to the power of CSS, the website can fallback to a similar generic font typename such as 'serif' for non-Windows users with a line like this: font: 16px/20px "Palatino Linotype", serif; Awesome! I want to start using fancy fonts! Is there a set of lists out there, of the fonts that are preinstalled by default in Windows 98, 2000, NT, ME, XP, 2003, etc., and maybe for the Mac OSX versions and various Linux distributions as well? It would be a great reference for picking web font faces! (if not, someone should compile it!) I had never before heard of Palatino Linotype and I want to know what other fonts have existed since old Windows versions that I've never known about!

• How to scale a PHP application (servers, mysql, memcache)

  Hi, I'm currently creating a website for a social project in switzerland. And before there is an overflow of user, I want to prepare the application to scale. I answered by myself many questions but some are left. I explain what I want to do. First at the beginnning, the Application will have only one server (short time) with DNS, PHP, Mysql, Data, and memcache. Second Then I will split them in two DNS, Mysql, memcache Data, PHP Third Here is the problem, I don't know how to do it exactly here to keep the application running well. I could do : Front : Load Balancer, memcache, DNS Web 1 : PHP, DATA Web 2 : PHP, DATA Mysql This would be the scheme, all PHP sessions are kept in the DB. BUT, how do I sync the data? do I run a Rsync to keep them up to date. do I put them on a separate disk (network disk) to be sure ? but in this case, how can I do in case of user uploads ? and if the website gets more success and we have to go on greater structures, would'nt it create some latency on updates ? or would it be a good thing to go directly to amazon's web services ? some infos I use codeigniter as Framework. I use linux as webserver (distribution not chosen now, but should be Debian) Thanks in advance for your answers.

• How to redirect a URL with GET variables in routes.rb without Rails stripping out the variable first?

  I am building a website in Rails to replace an existing website. In routes.rb I am trying to redirect some of the old URLs to their new equivalents (some of the URL slugs are changing so a dynamic solution is not possible.) My routes.rb looks like this: match "/index.php?page=contact-us" => redirect("/contact-us") match "/index.php?page=about-us" => redirect("/about-us") match "/index.php?page=committees" => redirect("/teams") When I visit /index.php?page=contact-us I am not redirected to /contact-us. I have determined this is because Rails is removing the get variables and only trying to match /index.php. For example, If I pass /index.php?page=contact-us into the below routes I will be redirected to /foobar: match "/index.php?page=contact-us" => redirect("/contact-us") match "/index.php?page=about-us" => redirect("/about-us") match "/index.php?page=committees" => redirect("/teams") match "/index.php" => redirect("/foobar") How can I keep the GET variables in the string and redirect the old URLs the way I'd like? Does Rails have an intended mechanism for this?

  I have 3 tables with user logins: sis_login = administrators tb_rb_estrutura = coordinators tb_usuario = clients I created a VIEW to unite all these users by separating them by levels, as follows: create view `login_names` as select `n1`.`cod_login` as `id`, '1' as `level`, `n1`.`nom_user` as `name` from `dados`.`sis_login` `n1` union all select `n2`.`id` as `id`, '2' as `level`, `n2`.`nom_funcionario` as `name` from `tb_rb_estrutura` `n2` union all select `n3`.`cod_usuario` as `id`, '3' as `level`, `n3`.`dsc_nome` as `name` from `tb_usuario` `n3`; So, can occur up to three ids repeated for different users, which is why I separated by levels. This VIEW is just to return me user name, according to his id and level. considering it has about 500,000 registered users, this view takes about 1 second to load. too much time, but is becomes very small when I need to return the latest posts on the forum of my website. The tables of the forums return the user id and level, then look for a name in this VIEW. I have registered 18 forums. When I run the query, it takes one second for each forum = 18 seconds. OMG. This page loads every time somebody enter my website. I would like to know if there is any user interface which allows me to choose a specific package/version and deploy and any user interface i can already use which allows me to show the deployments history and their status. (I saw that glu has a nice user interface i'm looking for something like it, http://linkedin.github.com/glu/docs/latest/html/tutorial.html ) I wondered if i could use glu (so that i can get their deployment history gui if they have a good one...) with mcollective but from what i understand they are parallel frameworks.

I would think that there should not be an issue. I tried creating a constructor for my Web User Control so that it would give default values to my properties but that didn't work. Any idea how to make this work? It doesn't seem like it should be that
