• How Mars Lost Its Atmosphere [Video]

  Scientists have long theorized that Mars once had an atmosphere and surface water–but where did it go? This video showcases one of their theories about Mars’ vanished water reserves. Courtesy of NASA and the NASAexplorer channel: When you take a look at Mars, you probably wouldn’t think that it looks like a nice place to live. It’s dry, it’s dusty, and there’s practically no atmosphere. But some scientists think that Mars may have once looked like a much nicer place to live, with a thicker atmosphere, cloudy skies, and possibly even liquid water flowing over the surface. So how do you go from something like this–to something like this? NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft will give us a clearer idea of how Mars lost its atmosphere, and scientists think that several processes have had an impact. • Programming by dictation?

  ie. you speak out the code, and someone else across the room types it in Anyone tried this? Obviously the person taking the dictation would need to be a coder too, so you didn't have to explain everything and go into tedious detail (not 'open bracket, new line...' but more like 'create a new class called myParser that takes three arguments, first one is...'). I thought of it because sometimes I'm too easily distracted at my computer. Surrounded by buttons, instant gratification a click away, the world at my fingertips. To get stuff done, I want to get away, write my code on paper. But that would mean losing access to necessary resources, and necessitate tedious typing-up later on. The solution? Dictate. Pros: no chance to check reddit, stackexchange, gmail, etc. code while you pace the room, lie down, play billiards, whatever train your brain to think more abstractedly (have to visualize things if you can't just see the screen) skip the tedious details (closing brackets etc.) the typist gets to shadow a more experienced programmer and learn how they work the typist can provide assistance/suggestions external pressure of typist expecting instructions, urging you to stay focussed Cons might be too hard might not work any better rather inefficient use of assisting programmer need to find/pay someone to do this

  Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. The quickest way I explain what is codeplex is that I start naming few of the projects which are available there and suddenly I start noticing a few hands going up knowing the projects. This is indirect way to prove that many of us know CodePlex usability but do not pay special attention to what it is actually. Let me name a few popular projects of the CodePlex here. • JOGL hardware based shadow mapping - computing the texture matrix

  I am implementing hardware shadow mapping as described here. I've rendered the scene successfully from the light POV, and loaded the depth buffer of the scene into a texture. This texture has correctly been loaded - I check this by rendering a small thumbnail, as you can see in the screenshot below, upper left corner. The depth of the scene appears to be correct - objects further away are darker, and that are closer to the light are lighter. However, I run into trouble while rendering the scene from the camera's point of view using the depth texture - the texture on the polygons in the scene is rendered in a weird, nondeterministic fashion, as shown in the screenshot. I believe I am making an error while computing the texture transformation matrix, but I am unsure where exactly. • Word mergefield wildcard not correctly matching

  Hello, Below is my mergefield code: { IF { MERGEFIELD Subs_State } = "GA" "blah blah" "{ IF { MERGEFIELD CEOrgStates } = "GA" "blah blah" ""} "} I'm pulling records from a MS Access db. My goal is to check whether a record has Subs_State field matching "GA", or the CEOrgStates has the word "GA" (some records have stuff like "|FL|CA|GA|CT|KY|" (no quotes)). When I merged the docs, Word doesnt seem to be able to match with the wildcards: If I use and compare "*GA" (fields ending with GA), it works; however, the double wildcards "*GA*" dont seem to work at all. Here are the things I’ve tried: Have data in lowercase, then compare with lowercase Have data in lowercase, convert to and then compare with uppercase Do the opposite of the above 2 with uppercase data Use “*GA*” and “*ga*” (no pipe) Use different delimiters Nothing seems to work with the double wildcard matching. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

• Where does amavisd-new log on ubuntu, by default

  I have a misbehaving amavisd on a mail server. It starts and then silently stops. Init script outputs successful start whan invoked manually, however the next second I check the status and the service is off. Nothing is listening on it's ports. I googled. I checked out the configuration files, I checked out init.d script. It starts, then it stops. And I have no idea what's going on, since I can't find the log file (no it's not /var/log/amavis.log or anything logical like that).

• HP LasterJet P2035 not mapping on remote desktop

  I am connecting from a Windows 7 Pro laptop to a remote 64bit Windows 2008 R2 server via Remote Desktop. My local laptop has a networked HP LaserJet P2035 printer set as the default printer. When I connect to the server, the local (networked) HP printer does not get mapped on the server. I've installed the 64bit drivers from HP for the printer and was able to create a test printer on the server itself using the correct driver (HP LaserJet P2035) priting to a file. I've also checked the Printer under Local Resources tab on my Remote Desktop client. Does anyone know where else I should check to get my local printer to make to my remote desktop session?

• Quiet Sound while recording using the "Stereo Mix" option on Windows XP.

  I'm trying to record some of my work, and the video capture program I'm using works fine. It's HyperCam2, and since it's not really professional, I don't care about that little thing in the corner. Anyways, If I check the record sound option and put it on the highest quality, and I want it to record the sounds playing from my computer, I have it record the "Stereo Mix" setting. However, after a quick test, I saw that even though my computer was at max volume, the recorded sound was very quiet, almost inaudible. Thinking it was just HyperCam, I downloaded Audacity, and only met similar results. While I'm not entirely savvy with hardware, I BELIEVE this to be my soundcard: SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio

• Slick2D + LWJGL collision system

  So I've been learning java for a while and have explored slick and lwjgl before but went away from using Slick for a while. But I've recently gone back to using it (as I'm making a platformer and Tiled will be really helpful). But here's where my problems begin: collision. I have a player polygon and I check to see if it's colliding with my tiled map with this method: public static boolean playerCollisionWith() { for(int i = 0; i < Blockmap.entities.size(); i++) { Block entity1 = (Block) Blockmap.entities.get(i); if(playerPoly.intersects(entity1.poly)) { return true; } } return false; } This would work normally but I'm using a different method for movement. Instead of just adding a speed variable to the player's x axis. I move like this: if(Keyboard.isKeyDown(Keyboard.KEY_RIGHT)) { speedX = Math.min(5, speedX + 1); moving = true; playerPoly.setX(x); if(playerCollisionWith()) { speedX = -5; playerPoly.setX(x); } } That Math.min call is what is messing me up =. I can't just call speedX = -5, because when I do the player "bounces" when the right mouse button is down and it's colliding. Bounces as in flashes back and forth REALLY quickly. But I don't really know how I would make it so that collisions on the y axis would work either, whether the player is jumping or not. So if I could get some help with how to fix this problem that would be great. Thank you for the help!

• Dummy output after upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10, even though sound card is detected

  So I just recently upgraded my system from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10. However, when I booted into 12.10 for the first time, no sound comes out of my speakers. I checked the sound settings and the Dummy Output was the only thing showing up. I used "hwinfo --sound" to check to see if my sound card was actually installed, and it was installed. hwinfo --sound hal.1: read hal dataprocess 2687: arguments to dbus_move_error() were incorrect, assertion "(dest) == NULL || !dbus_error_is_set ((dest))" failed in file ../../dbus/dbus-errors.c line 282. • Where did this incorrect cached DNS lookup come from?

  Somehow, I've been having a chronic issue where my computer will get an invalid DNS lookup in its cache for either of the two Exchange servers I use from Mail.app. My workplace runs one of the Exchange servers and I run the other (they are totally unrelated, hosted by different companies, etc.). The problem manifests as a certificate domain error. When it happens, I can run nslookup mail.mydomain.com and I see the incorrect IP address (usually owned by either Apple or Akamai), but if I run nslookup mail.mydomain.com 8.8.8.8, I get the correct address. My real quest is to find out why this keeps happening, and to do that, I'd like to know which server is supplying me this bad DNS entry. Is there a way to check my DNS cache to see where this bad lookup came from?

• basic beginning emacs questions - install latest version and pick appropriate UI

  I'm running the latest Kubuntu (12.04 beta 2) and I would like to run the latest emacs (currently v24). The repos are one version behind. What's the best way to install v24 or later (and avoid future version conflicts)? Also, is there any reason not to aways use the GUI version of emacs if X is running? For example, could I set the GUI emacs version as the default text editor and use it to edit cron jobs (crontab -e)? I'm assuming the answer is yes, but since I haven't done that yet (my default editor is nano), I want to check if there are reasons I should leave nano as the default editor. Usually when I'm working on the command line I end up using nano. Now that I think about it, I have no idea why I keep doing that. Is there any downside to calling a GUI editor when working in an X terminal? EDIT: I briefly tested these two versions GNU Emacs 24.0.94.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.3.20) from GNU Emacs 23.3.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) installed by default in Kubuntu. This post explains some of the differences between versions. Unfortunately (for me) the defaults installed version (23.3.1, 23.3+1-1ubuntu9) is the nox version.
