• Detecting if a browser's cache is full

  We've identified that full browser caches are the cause of a problem on our extranet. It only affects a small number of our users, but we'd like to alert them to the problem and give them some guidance on how to fix the problem for themselves. We'd like to use a similar system to the one which GMail uses. When it detects that your browser's cache is full, it shows a warning message telling users that their cache is full and that it may cause problems with GMail, along with a link to a Gmail Help page on clearing your browser's cache. Does anyone know if there any resources out there, or examples of how to use JavaScript to detect that the browser's cache is full? Thanks.

• Basic PHP question for Drupal Views theming

  My PHP and programming knowledge is extremely basic, so this is probably a dumb question: I am theming a View in Drupal 6, and I want to add an id with a consecutive number to each item in the view (first item would have the id #item1, the second #item2, etc). I am customizing the style output (views-view-unformatted--MYVIEWNAME.tpl.php) and the row style output (views-view-fields--MYVIEWNAME.tpl.php), and I want to add a counter variable in the foreach loop in the style output tpl, and then use that variable in the row style output tpl, but the last one is not recognizing the variable. It does not give me any errors, but doesnt print the number. I understand this has probably something to do with variables visibility, how can I declare the counter variable in the style .tpl so I can the use it in the row style .tpl? Thank you

• Problem with keyboard language

  Hello you all! I just made an application which purpose is to find an x result using the rule of three. It runs fine and everything but there is a small problem. I am using WinXP Europpean Spanish version. As we all know, in many europpean countries the decimal dot is changed by a " , " comma. When I use my application, it turns out that when I press the dot key on my keyboard´s number pad, my application doesnt take it as a normal decimal dot and it ignores it... so I need to manually press the comma key so it can give me the right answer. How can I solve this problem?

• Script SQL Server login with Windows authentication without machine name

  I want to write a SQL 2005 script to create a new login that uses Windows authentication. The Windows user is a local account (not a domain one). A local account with the same name exists on many SQL Server machines and I want to run the same script on all of them. It seemed simple enough: CREATE LOGIN [MyUser] FROM WINDOWS However, that doesn't work! SQL returns an error, saying Give the complete name: <domain\username>. Of course, I can do that for one machine and it works, but the same script will not work on other machines.

• How to send reminder notifications to subscribers for renewal from SQL Server 2005?

  I have a table in SQL DB, namely dbo.subscribers, it contains following columns: -SubscriberID -JoinDateTime The business logic says a subscription last for 2 weeks and a reminder should be sent after 7 days from the JoinDateTime. The way that the system was designed to send reminders are via a URL call, e.g. http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/renew_userid=SubscriberID/ and that can only be called from our webserver which is the only whitelisted IP machines given. Currently there is a windows service written to query the DB once a day at midnight to grab all expiring subscribers and send them reminders, however this batch approach only sends reminders to the nearest date, well, I could have set the interval down from 1 day to 1 hour such that the service can send notifications out closer to the exact JoinDateTime + 7 days requirements. I have heard a stored procedure can be written and perform task like this to a nearly real-time manner, if yes, please give me some hints on how to do it. Another question is - is SSRS bit of an overkill to perform things like this? Please advice. TIA

• CoreDumpDirectory isn't working on ubuntu; getting segmentation fault with php

  I'm trying to solve a segmentation fault. This message appears in my apache-error.log: [notice] child pid 3979 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I've tried disabling some apache and php modules but I'm still getting the same error. I've also tried putting this in apache2.conf: CoreDumpDirectory /tmp/apache2-gdb-dump and then chmod 777, chown www-data... so that the server can write. I can see no core-dump files to give me a hint on the error. Does anybody have an idea why CoreDumpDirectory isn't working on Ubuntu?

  I'll try to explain this as best I can. I have multiple divs that are fixed-width but variable height. I want to float these boxes into two columns inside a fixed-width container. What happens when a give them all a float: left value, I get something like this: ######### ######### # box 1 # # box 2 # ######### # ..... # ......... # ..... # ......... ######### ######### ######### # box 3 # # box 4 # # ..... # # ..... # ######### ######### ######### ######### # box 5 # # box 6 # # ..... # ######### # ..... # ######### (The periods are white space) What I really would really like is the top of box 3 to touch the bottom of box 1. Any easy way to acheive this?

  Is their any profilers that support Silverlight? I have tried ANTS (Version 3.1) without any success? Does version 4 support it? Any other products I can try?   I m trying to make a utility to generate a Insert script of sql tables along with relational table. I got all the values in c#. Now I want to remove the one column name and its value from the script.most probably the identity column. Eg. The string I have (which keeps on changing with table name and varies) INSERT Core.Customers ([customerId],[customername],[customeradress],[ordernumber]) Values(123,N'Rahul',N'244 LIZ MORN',2334) NOW I know I have to remove CustomerId. (sometimes need to be replaces with @somevariable) Please give me an efficient way how to retrieve customerId value and Deleting column name and value . Conditions: insert script length and columns names keep changing. Method should return the deleted value. At some point of time customer id can be same as order id. In that case my string.remove method fails.

  When I initiate a class in Python, I give it some values. I then call method in the class which does something. Here's a snippet: class TestClass(): def __init__(self): self.counter = 0 def doSomething(self): self.counter = self.counter + 1 print 'Hiya' if __name__ == "__main__": obj = TestClass() obj.doSomething() obj.doSomething() obj.doSomething() print obj.counter As you can see, everytime I call the doSomething method, it prints some text and increments an internal variable i.e. counter. When I initiate the class, i set the counter variable to 0. When I destroy the object, I'd like to return the internal counter variable. What would be a good way of doing this? I wanted to know if there were other ways apart from doing stuff like: accessing the variable directly. Like obj.counter. creating a method like getCounter. Thanks.

• Why people are so afraid of using clone() (on collection and JDK classes) ?

  A number of times I've argued that using clone() isn't such a bad practice. Yes, I know the arguments. Bloch said it's bad. He indeed did, but he said that implementing clone() is bad. Using clone on the other hand, especially if it is implemented correctly by a trusted library, such as the JDK, is OK. Just yesterday I had a discussion about an answer of mine that merely suggests that using clone() for ArrayList is OK (and got no upvotes for that reason, I guess). If we look at the @author of ArrayList, we can see a familiar name - Josh Bloch. So clone() on ArrayList (and other collections) is perfectly fine. (Just look at the implementation). Same goes for Calendar and perhaps most of the java.lang and java.util classes. So, give me a reason why not to use clone() with JDK classes?

  I am trying to write an application for website powered by drupal, basically i would like to create an application only authenticated users are able to use, and users are only allowed to connect with members of the opposite group they are a member of. I have been learning flash builder 4 and learning the basics of actionscript but I am still pretty new to Flash and Flex development. I would like to users to connect using the Adobe Stratus 2 protocol and if possible by authentication on existing site and using membership data from existing mysql database. • Algorithm to find a measurement of similarity between lists.

  Given that I have two lists that each contain a separate subset of a common superset, is there an algorithm to give me a similarity measurement? Example: A = { John, Mary, Kate, Peter } and B = { Peter, James, Mary, Kate } How similar are these two lists? Note that I do not know all elements of the common superset. Update: I was unclear and I have probably used the word 'set' in a sloppy fashion. My apologies. Clarification: Order is of importance. If identical elements occupy the same position in the list, we have the highest similarity for that element. The similarity decreased the farther apart the identical elements are. The similarity is even lower if the element only exists in one of the lists. I could even add the extra dimension that lower indices are of greater value, so a a[1] == b[1] is worth more than a[9] == b[9], but that is mainly cause I am curious.

• Is the F# language reference documentation available in an offline format (PDF, CHM)?

  I've found several posts on hubFS of people asking if there is, or will be, offline documentation for F#. These posts haven't been answered. So I want to give it a shot and ask the same question here on SO. Where I've looked for offline documentation so far: The April 2010 CTP release of Visual F# (version 2.0) is available for VS 2008, but it doesn't come without an offline help. There's a question on SO about offline documentation for various programming languages, but F# isn't mentioned there at the time of this writing. There is of course Microsoft's F# language reference documentation (available on MSDN), which could be downloaded for offline browsing using e.g. wget. Question: Does anyone know whether any "official" offline documentation is on the way, anytime soon? (And related to this, albeit this probably can't be answered objectively: Would it be reasonable to expect that F# likely won't undergo ECMA or ISO standardization, ie. there likely won't be a standards document describing the language?)

• ListViewGroup not sorting correctly

  I'm using a ListView control in a C# WinForms application. Items in the list are added to a ListViewGroup (in this case, grouping by country). The one thing that isn't working as expected is that the column sorting appears to be strange. I've hooked into the ListViewItemSorter property of the ListView and everything sorts perfectly except when the country column is sorted in descending order (that is, Z-A). Regardless of how the list sort occurs the groups show in ascending order. Can anyone give me a nudge in the right direction? EDIT: FWIW, .NET 3.5 on Vista.

For message transfer I am using hash data structure, Ex: { api => POST, username => sganesh, pass => "pass", message => "hai", time => "current_time", } I want to generate unique id using this hash. I have tried some of the ways, MD5 and freeze but this give unreadable id. I want some meaningful or readable unique id. I have thought we can use micro seconds to differentiate the id but here the problem is multiple clients. In any situation my id should be unique. Can anyone help me out of this problem?   I was unable to activate Safari Reader in a local HTML file, so I cannot give you a running example but only describe my problem: The markup of my blog posts is basically this: <div class="post"> <div class="post-header">Hello, World</div> <div class="post-body"> <p>Look at this picture:</p> <p><img src="http://37prime.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/safari_icon.png"/></p> <p>Isn't that a nice picture?</p> </div> </div> This looks as expected in all browsers, including Safari. In Safari Reader however, the third paragraph "Isn't that a nice picture?" is floating around the image, instead of being on a paragraph of it's own. Has anybody experienced a similar problem?

• Issuing native system commands in Scala

There may be other ways to get directory information without issuing the command, but that's beside the point of my question.) It would correspond to os.system(...) in Python.
