• Minimal Fedora Installation

  I am working on a Fedora 13 minimal iso image with no Desktop environment. I just need wxPython support. I removed the gnome from kickstart and build the iso image using livecd-creator. But now my application is not loading as gnome is gone. Earlier my application(myapp.desktop) was placed in /usr/share/gnome/autostart/ and starts automatically. So what should i do now the run my application? To run my wxPython appalication should i have to install display manager(xdm, gdm, kdm etc..)? If i install gdm, it takes lots of space. what should i do? In short i need Fedora 13 minimal iso image with no desktop environment and with wxPython support.

• What is the simplest and fastest way to transfer large file through a Windows network?

  I have a Window Server 2000 machine running MS SQL Server that stores over 20GB of data. The database is backed-up every day to the second harddrive. I want to transfer those backup files to another computer to build another test server and for recovery practicing. (the backup never actually got restored for almost 5 years. Don't tell my boss about that!) I have trouble transfering that huge file through the network. I've tried plain network copy, apache download, and ftp. Any method I tried end up failing when the amount of data transfered reach 2GB. The last time that I successfully transfered the file, it was through a usb attached external harddrive. But I want to perform this task routinely and preferably automatically. Wonder what is the most pragmatic approach for this situation ?

• Pausing and Resuming the jQuery / ASP.NET News Ticker

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. In December 2010 I wrote an article titled Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker that explored how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. The news ticker's content is defined as an unordered list (<ul>) where each list item (<li>) represents a news headline. Once the ticker's content is defined, having it cycle through the head lines is as simple as calling the JavaScript function startTicker(id, numberToShow, duration), which begins cycling the headlines in the unordered list with the specified id, showing numberToShow headlines at a time and cycling to the next headline every duration number of milliseconds. This installment shows how to enhance the news ticker to enable pausing and resuming. With these enhancements, the ticker can be configured to automatically pause rotating its headlines when the user mouses over it, and to resume rotating them once the user mouses out. Similarly, with a bit of additional markup and script you can add pause and play buttons to a ticker, allowing a user to start and stop the ticker by clicking an image or button. • Upcoming events : OBUG Connect Conference 2012

  The Oracle Benelux User Group (OBUG) have given me an amazing opportunity to present a one day Optimizer workshop at their annual Connect Conference in Maastricht on April 24th. The workshop will run as one of the parallel tracks at the conference and consists of three 45 minute sessions. Each session can be attended stand alone but they will build on each other to allow someone new to the Oracle Optimizer or SQL tuning to come away from the conference with a better understanding of how the Optimizer works and what techniques they should deploy to tune their SQL. Below is a brief description of each of the sessions Session 7 - 11:30 am Oracle Optimizer: Understanding Optimizer StatisticsThe workshop opens with a discussion on Optimizer statistics and the features introduced in Oracle Database 11g to improve the quality and efficiency of statistics-gathering.   A while ago (probably a decade ago, actually) I saw a report on a tracking system maintained by a U.S. Army artillery control unit.  This system was capable of maintaining a bearing on various units in the field to help avoid friendly fire.  I consider the U.S. Army to be the most technologically advanced fighting force on Earth, but to my terror I saw something on the title bar of an application displayed on a laptop behind one of the soldiers they were interviewing: Tracking.mdb Oh yes.  Microsoft Office Suite had made it onto the battlefield.  My hope is that it was just running as a front-end for a more proficient database (no offense Access people), or that the soldier was tracking something else like KP duty or fantasy football scores.  But I could also see the corporate equivalent of a pointy-haired boss walking into a cube and asking someone who had piddled with Access to build a database for HR forms.  Except this pointy-haired boss would have been a general, the cube would have been a tank, and the HR forms would have been targets that, if something went amiss, would have been hit by a 500lb artillery round. Hope that solider could write a good query :)

• Dynamic libraries are not allowed on iOS but what about this?

  I'm currently using LuaJIT and its FFI interface to call C functions from LUA scripts. What FFI does is to look at dynamic libraries' exported symbols and let the developer use it directly form LUA. Kind of like Python ctypes. Obviously using dynamic libraries is not permitted in iOS for security reasons. • Finding header files

  A C or C++ compiler looks for header files using a strict set of rules: relative to the directory of the including file (if "" was used), then along the specified and default include paths, fail if still not found. An ancillary tool such as a code analyzer (which I'm currently working on) has different requirements: it may for a number of reasons not have the benefit of the setup performed by a complex build process, and have to make the best of what it is given. In other words, it may find a header file not present in the include paths it knows, and have to take its best shot at finding the file itself. I'm currently thinking of using the following algorithm: Start in the directory of the including file. Is the header file found in the current directory or any subdirectory thereof? If so, done. If we are at the root directory, the file doesn't seem to be present on this machine, so skip it. Otherwise move to the parent of the current directory and go to step 2. Is this the best algorithm to use? In particular, does anyone know of any case where a different algorithm would work better?

  Hi, How can I check the availability of websites from hosted by company? Ping the server and checking if the services for IIS or Apache/Tomcat is not enough. I want to see if the sites are responsive, if I can login. My idea is to build a script using cURL to access the websites and parse for certain words. However using cURL to access a secure site (HTTPS://www.fleetagent.be) doesnt seem to work. cURL might not be the best tool! Any ideas how to check the availability of this website? • How to change theme in Windows 7 with Powershell script?

I found the registry entry where this stored, but I apparently need to take some further action to get windows to load the theme. Any ideas? • MSTSC Not working, disconnects shortly after connecting

  I'm currently having a problem connecting remotely to a server. It is a brand new build Windows 2008 R2, remote users are enabled. I'm trying to connect from a Windows 7 machine. Everytime I remotely connect to the server it will stay connected for a matter of seconds (maybe 3-5) and then disconnect and I get the standard old cannot connect and list of reasons it could be. Then I cannot connect again and get this prompt until I restart the server. As soon as it's finished restarting, it happens all over again. The network and hardware configuration between the two machines is completely reliable. Does anybody know what else I could try? Thanks.

• Plesk 9 - Client panel access via client domain, not server host name

  I've setup a Plesk 9 vps recently. The plesk admin is accessible at, say, http://superawesomedomain.com:8443. I'm setting up a couple of client domains on the server. I'd like clients to be able to access plesk via a similar url, but instead it would be something like http://inferiorclientdomain.com:8443. This works ok in a sense, but it always redirect the request for inferiorclientdomain.com:8443 to superawesomedomain.com:8443. I'd like the control panel access url to remain on inferiorclientdomain.com. Is that possible? EDIT: System Info. Plesk 9.5.2 on CentOS 5 (Build 95100504.12)

• What is a good tool to scan a FTP directory and show disk usage visually ala KDirStat/WinDirStat?

  Is there a tool that can scan an FTP directory and build a visual representation of disk usage? I'm running on Windows so that platform is my preference for this tool, but a *NIX tool would also be useful. I'm thinking along the lines of WinDirStat, KDirStat and TreeSize. At first I thought WinDirStat might be able to scan an FTP directory, but it was not so. FOSS is a plus, but not a requirement (I'm not against paying for good software). • Script/tool to import series of snapshots, each being a new edition, into GIT, populating source tree?

  I've developed code locally and taken a fairly regular snapshot whenever I reach a significant point in development, e.g. a working build. So I have a long-ish list of about 40 folders, each folder being a snapshot e.g. in ascending date YYYYMMDD order, e.g.:- 20100523 20100614 20100721 20100722 20100809 20100901 20101001 20101003 20101104 20101119 20101203 20101218 20110102 I'm looking for a script to import each of these snapshots into GIT. The end result being that the latest code is the same as the last snapshot, and other editions are accessible and are as numbered. Some other requirements: that the latest edition is not cumulative of the previous snapshots, i.e., files that appeared in older snapshots but which don't appear in later ones (e.g. due to refactoring etc.) should not appear in the latest edition of the code. meanwhile, there should be continuity between files that do persist between snapshots. I would like GIT to know that there are previous editions of these files and not treat them as brand new files within each edition. Some background about my aim: I need to formally revision control this work rather than keep local private snapshot copies. I plan to release this work as open source, so version controlling would be highly recommended I am evaluating some of the current popular version control systems (Subversion and GIT) BUT I definitely need a working solution in GIT as well as subversion. I'm not looking to be persuaded to use one particular tool, I need a solution for each tool I am considering. (I haved posted an answer separately for each tool so separate camps of folks who have expertise in GIT and Subversion will be able to give focused answers on one or the other). • Discovering Your Project

  The discovery phase of any project is both exciting and critical to the project’s success.  There are several key points that you need to keep in mind as you navigate this process. The first thing you need to understand is who the players in the project are and what their motivations are for the project.  Leaving out a key stakeholder in the resulting product is one of the easiest ways to doom your project to fail.  The better the quality of the input you have at this early phase the better chance you will have of creating a well accepted deliverable. The next task you should tackle is to gather the goals for the project.  Specifically, what does the company expect to get for the money they are about to layout.  This seems like a common sense task, but you would be surprised how many teams to straight to building the system.  Even if you are following an agile methodology I believe that this is critical. Inventorying the resources that already exists gives you an idea what you are going to have to build and what you can leverage at lower risk.  This list should include documentation, servers, code repositories, databases, languages, security systems and supporting teams.  All of these are “resources” that can effect the cost and delivery schedule of your project. Finally, you need to verify what you have found and documented with the stakeholders and subject matter experts.  Documentation that has not been reviewed is actually a list of assumptions and we all know that assumptions are the mother of all screw ups. If you give the discovery phase of your project the attention that it deserves your project has a much better chance of success. • DVD-drive detected by BIOS and UEFI but not by Ubuntu 12.04

  I have build a new tower containing; Asrock Z77 extreme4 (motherboard) Core i7 (processor) Hitachi LGE-DMGH 12 L (B) GH15F SATA (SATA DVD-drive) Problem is; BIOS and UEFI has no problems detecting the DVD-drive but it is not detected by Ubuntu 12.04. It is not present in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab. Below is the contents of fstab and mtab. • Player sprite moving slower on iPhone 4

  I just finished getting movement/jump animation for a player sprite in Xcode using Cocos2D. The basic movement algorithm is a timer that updates every 0.01 sec, changing the sprite position to (sprite.position.x + xVel, sprite.position.y + yVel). Each time a movement button is tapped, the appropriate velocity (initialized to 0) is changed to whatever speed I choose, then a stop movement button returns the velocity to 0. It's not an ideal solution but I'm very new at this and stoked to at least have that working with little help from the internet. So I may not have explained that perfectly, but it is in fact working to my satisfaction in Xcode's iPhone Simulator, however when I build it for my device and run it on my phone, the sprite's movement speed is noticeably slower than in Xcode. At first I thought it must have to do with the resolution of the iPhone 4, making the sprite's movement path twice as long, but I found that if I pull up the multitask bar, then return to the app the speed will sometimes jump back to normal. My second theory was that the code is just inefficient and is bogging the processes down, but I would see this reflected in the frame rate wouldn't I? It stays at 59-60 the whole time, and the spritesheet animation runs at the correct speed. Has anyone experienced this? Is this a really obvious issue that I'm completely missing? Any help (or tips for optimizing my approach to movement) would be much appreciated!

• How to recover broken dpkg after lucid-bleed ppa-purge?

  Did a ppa-purge of lucid-bleed and dpkg didn't downgrade properly and now it is broken. dpkg: PreDepends: tar (>= 1.23) but 1.22-2ubuntu1 is to be installed What scares me is when simulating the removal of dpkg I get: Removing this package may render the system unusable. Are you sure you want to do that? and then the list of packages which depend on it, which will also be removed, is obviously very long. Is it safe for me to remove dpkg just to reinstall it? How would I ensure the list of packages which were also removed are then reinstalled? Will forcing the version of dpkg help? (FYI: simulating a forced version brings up a much smaller list of applications which will also be removed). Any other suggestions? • Incorporating libs into module pattern

  I have recently started using require.js (along with Backbone.js, jQuery, and a handful of other JavaScript libs) and I love the module pattern (here's a nice synopsis if you're unfamiliar: http://www.adequatelygood.com/2010/3/JavaScript-Module-Pattern-In-Depth). Something I'm running up against is best practices on incorporating libs that don't (out of the box) support the module pattern. For example, jQuery without modification is going to load into a global jQuery variable and that's that. Require.js recognizes this and provides an example project for download with a (slightly) modified version of jQuery to incorporate with a require.js project. This goes against everything I've ever learned about using external libs - never modify the source. I can list a ton of reasons. Regardless, this is not an approach I'm comfortable with. I have been using a mixed approach - wherein I build/load the "traditional" JS libraries in a "traditional" way (available in the global namespace) and then using the module pattern for all of my application code. This seems okay to me, but it bugs me because one of the real beauties of the module pattern (no globals) is getting perverted. Anyone else got a better solution to this problem?

• browser without gpu support

  Google has an Easter egg that draws 3D graph but when I tried it out on chrome it complained about no WebGL support. I've also tested it on Firefox whose WebGL support was enabled but ended up with the same problem. Thus, I suspect it's an issue of my GPU. Some googling led me to chrome://gpu and here's what I got Graphics Feature Status Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable HTML Rendering: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable 3D CSS: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration unavailable WebGL: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration unavailable WebGL multisampling: Unavailable.
