• trying to setup multiple primary partitions on ubuntu linux [migrated]

  I currently have ubuntu desktop installed on a harddrive. I want to partition the harddrive so that I can reserve 30 gigs for ubuntu server and 30 gigs for ubuntu desktop. The drive has 300 gigs available. Right now I am booting from dvd drive and installing ubuntu server. I selected "Guided partitioning" and created a 30 gig primary partition of Ext4 journaling filesystem, set "yes, format it" for format partition and set bootable flag to on. I intend to use this 30 gig partition to hold ubuntu server and allow me to boot from it. Now I have two other partitions. They are both set to "logical", one is currently using 285.8 gigs and is using ext4 (when I try to set bootable flag to true, it gives a warning "You are trying to set the bootable flag on a logical partition. The bootable flag is only useful on the primary partitions"). More alarming it says "No existing file system was detected in this partition". Actually, Im thinking that this is the parittion that is supposed to be holding my current Ubuntu Desktop. And of course I want this to be bootable and be a primary partition, so I could dual boot from this and the server partition. Now the third partition is also set to logical and it is being used as swap area. My question is regarding that second partition. Its supposed to be a primary partition thats holding my existing ubuntu desktop edition. How do I switch it to primary and to make sure that its pointing to my existing desktop installation?

• HDD dead forever???

  Yesterday I turned on my computer and it couldn't boot. I found out the hd (320GB SATA Seagate Momentus 7200.3 for notebook) was broken, it couldn't be recognized by the BIOS. I have another of the same hd, so I exchanged the boards. I found out that there is a problem on its board since my good hd didn't work. But the broken hd doesn't work with the good board as well: it can be recognized but when I insert a Windows Instalation DVD it says the hd is 0GB. I put it in a case and use it in another computer via USB, and but it doesn't show up in the "My Computer". I used a software to recover files called "GetDataBack for NTFS", it recognized the hd but with the wrong size (2TB). I try to make it read the hd but it get an I/O error reading sector. It tries to read, the hd spins... So, since I'm using a good board on it, the problem seems to be internal. Is there anything someone could do recover the files from it?

• Linux Has Become Very Slow Dealing With Large Data

  Last year I bought a computer, for around $1,800, so it is relatively high-end. When I first got it I was particularly pleased at how quick it dealt with large MySQL queries, imports and exports. But somewhere along the way something has gone wrong and I am not sure how to diagnose the problem. Any job that involves processing large amounts of data, e.g. gzipping file c. 1GB+, UPDATEs on large MySQL tables etc. have become very slow. I just performed an intensive alter statement on a 240,000,000 row table on a remote server, which is lower spec. This took about 10 minutes. However, performing the same query on a 167,000,000 row table on my computer went fine until it hit 860MB. Now it is only writing about 1MB every 15 seconds. Does anyone have any advice as to debugging what the issue is? I am using LinuxMint (based on Ubuntu 12.04.) The home partition is encrypted, which really slows down gzip. I have noticed the swap is barely used, but am not sure if that is because there is more than enough RAM. The filesystem is ext4. The MySQL server is on a separate hard drive, but it was fine when I first installed it. Other than the above issues, there are no other problems with it. I am going to install a fresh Ubuntu on the 4th hard drive to see if that is any different.

• How to format my external HDD back to as "removable storage"?

  Recently I formated my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex external HDD in Mac OS X using GUID partition table since I wanted to install another Mac OS X onto that external HDD. However I changed my mind after my external HDD being formatted. Now I want to format my external HDD back to NTFS so that I can use it with my Windows 7. However, after I connected my external HDD via USB it didn't show up in my "computer" so I used "Disk Management" to check what's wrong with it. In the "Disk Management" I saw that there was one partition of my external HDD called "EFI partition" and I found that I could not delete this partition in the "Disk Management". So I tried to use "diskpart" in cmd and select the external HDD and commanded "clean". Then the EFI partition was gone and I created new volumn on that external HDD. However, after the volumn being created my external HDD did show up in my "computer" but it is in the "Hard Disk Drive" not in the "Devices with Removable Storage" as it used to be. I'm wondering if I can do anything to it to make it recognized as a "Devices with Removable Storage"?

• Ubuntu 10.04 not detecting multiple monitors

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks.   Completed CentOS 5.4 perfect install from howtoforge.com (ISPConfig 3). I have ISPConfig 3 deployed with a handful of sites. I installed xen: yum install xen kernel-xen i installed the recommended (linuxtopia.org) virtualization packages and started libvirtd yum install virt-manager libvirt libvirt-python libvirt-python python-virtinst i have damn small linux .iso in /root virt-install --name damnsmall --ram 16 --file=/var/lib/xen/images/damnsmall.img --file-size=1 --vnc --cdrom=/root/current.iso yields the error: ERROR Host does not support any virtualization options i have also tried this from GNOME (virt-manager) and i cant even add a connection. i read somewhere i need to reboot with the xen kernel--i dont think i want to do that--though, not really sure why. i need to keep ISPConfig untouched.   I am looking for a good solution to collaborate on Microsoft Office documents, we currently just edit directly on a Samba share but it's one big mess because sometimes people leave the office with their laptops while docs are open so swap files remain there and then you nobody is sure what's going on. Is there any good and simple open source solution based on Linux? I've tried Alfresco but it is much more than what I need, we got an internal wiki for most collaboration and I just need some solution for the stuff we need to do in Microsoft Office (mostly Excel files, the rest is in the wiki) EDIT: Some more info as requested - we are very small group, 4 full time employees and a few freelancers. The best idea I've got so far is just managing it in a subversion repository with a Lock-Modify-Lock policy but I'd love to hear about better solutions. Thanks!

  I am using Nginx and PHP-FPM on Linux. I am not sure whether the issue is that PHP is not writing to the location specified in the PHP.ini, or if it just isn't working at all. Some of the logs produced by Nginx and PHP-FPM contain the PHP errors, but they are mixed in with other Nginx log output. When I run phpInfo(), value in the error_log is set to a folder in my home directory, but nothing is ever created. I understand that values in the Nginx conf and PHP-FPM conf can overwrite those set in the PHP.ini, but surely running phpInfo(), would show the final config values? I would like to be able to have 1 folder, with seperate files for the Nginx access and error log as well as PHP errors. Thanks.

There are currently two NTFS drivers available for Linux. The NTFS driver included in the kernel, and the userspace NTFS-3G driver that makes use of FUSE. By all accounts, NTFS-3G works perfectly. My question then, is if the NTFS filesystem has been successfully reverse engineered, why have the kernel NTFS team not implemented the changes in their driver? At the moment it is still marked as experimental, and there is a good chance it will destroy your data. Note: This has absolutely nothing to do with distributions...

• Samba4 advice for production use

  I have an old Samba 3 + LDAP server installed that needs to be rebuilt. I'm weighting my options, and Windows Server seems too expensive at the moment, and Samba 4 appeared to be a nice option, coupled with the last Bind 9 that can dynamically add the computers to the DNS. I have about 30 workstations, so I still consider it a small network. My questions are: Is Samba 4 stable enough for production? It seems as if the Samba team is too cautious on when to call their version final, or even beta, as compared with other open source projects. What Linux distribution would you recommend to set it up? I usually use Ubuntu Server, but may use another one if installing / maintaining Samba 4 is better on that one.

• Can't add Fedora 14 to grub.

  Today I installed Fedora 14 in a different partition in the same hard drive as Ubuntu. At the Fedora 14 installation, I chose not to install Boot-loader in the MBR, and instead chose to install it in the Fedora partition itself, which is according to my HD layout /sda3.   Using Ubuntu server, I need to create some user accounts that have the following limitations: (1) User may only view and manipulate files in their home directory. (2) User may only execute commands related to rsync and sftp. I want users to be able to backup files using rsync, and I want them to be able retrieve files using an sftp client like FileZilla. Other than this, I don't want users to be able to view other files on the system, or execute any commands that might mess with the system. I'm more of an Ubuntu Desktop user, and have very little experience administering a linux server. Most tutorials I've found assume I know things that I don't know. So I'm having difficulty setting this up.

  Hi all: I have an nginx server (CentOS 5.3, linux) that I'm using as a reverse-proxy load-balancer in front of 8 ruby on rails application servers. As our load on these servers increases, I'm beginning to wonder at what point will the nginx server become a bottleneck? The CPUs are hardly used, but that's to be expected. The memory seems to be fine. No IO to speak of. So is my only limitation bandwidth on the NICs? Currently, according to some cacti graphs, the server is hitting around 700Kbps ( 5 min average ) on each NIC during high load. I would think this is still pretty low. Or, will the limit be in sockets or some other resource in the operating system? Thanks for any thoughts and insights. Aaron

  I have 2 computers now: downloader (asus at4nm10t-i) with debian and desktop (asus sabertooth 990fx) with gentoo in the same network under NAT even with the same ethernet card: RTL8111E. driver r8169 is compiled as module on both computers. Sometimes in evenings desktop cannot connect to google and all its services like now: curl -v http://www.google.by on downloader it received server's answer immediately. on desktop it hanged and when I ran in other terminal: netstat -ntp | grep curl >>tcp 0 1 192.168.0.7:54126 173.194.35.191:80 SYN_SENT 4876/curl after 1-2 minutes it received server's answer. I was tried to change ip of network, mac address of desktop but nothing changed. When I was trying to connect to another services except google: curl -v http://www.yahoo.com both computers received answers immediately! Only when I rebooted desktop it begins to work with google services correctly I cant understand what is this bug related to. In which bugtracker should I post this: r8169 or linux kernel or google? PS. Desktop was checked with memtest: 5 passes - no errors

  Running RSH commands on a Windows box against a Linux box works only for the administrator user. Is there a file somewhere that has a list of users that can run commands remotely? More Info The server configuration is automated by VMware's product... There's no /etc/hosts.equiv file setup but there is a /root/.rhosts file with an entry of [IP ADDRESS] +. The SUA client C:\Windows\SUA\bin\rsh can login when run as the local administrator account but no other user can login. The error is: rcmd: unknown user: [username]. The command I'm trying to run is: rsh -l root [IP ADDRESS] ls.

  On a machine with multiple NICs, running either Windows or Linux, is it possible to dedicate a NIC to a VM such that the host won't even try to use it for itself? I suspect it isn't even possible but if it is, which OS and version and just how would I set it up? The reason for this, apart from academic curiosity, is that I'm trying to set up a network lab for testing purposes. I currently have only a single spare machine, otherwise this wouldn't be an issue. One of the VMs will be the firewall for this lab network, so will need a dedicated NIC for the WAN interface. Neither ESXi nor Xen server will run on the machine, so I have to use a host OS.

I have a pool of addresses in the 192.168.0.0/24 network for this users. How can I translate, saythe IP10.0.0.64to192.168.0.64` in order to grant it internet access? I have already tried SNAT - DNAT, even I have written a NFQUEUE app to spoof the IP address with no luck.
