• sql join question, how to select when value not in a set of values

  I have two tables, table1 and table2. Table1 is in a one to many relationship with table2 (one row in table1 maps to many rows in table2). There is a field in table2 called code. If none of the values of code in table2 equal some set of values (say 1, 2, and 3), I want to select the value in table1. I'm not sure how to write this kind of join. Assume the primary key in table1 is called id and the foreign key to which it maps is called did. Can you tell me how to write this kind of join? Thanks, Elliott

• Are the built-in images in iPhone documented, and is there a list of their names somewhere?

  I discovered somewhat by accident that if you make a UIButton in Interface Builder and type in Plus in the image field, a + image appears for the button. A similar result comes from typing Minus. I am wondering if this is a bug, or if there is some way the poor programmers can access the built-in general GUI images from other apple apps, such as the green +, the red -, the detail disclosure chevron, the big red "Delete Contact" or similarly styled button, etc. Has anyone else encountered this, or know where to access these things in Xcode? It makes sense to me that they should be usable, cause the Apple HIG seems to be all about making things recognizable and intuitive, and using them the way other apps use them.

• Making Eclipse behave like Visual Studio

  I'm doing some Android dev, and I much prefer Visual Studio, but I'll have to use Eclipse for this. Has anyone made a tool that switches Eclipse to look and behave more like visual studio? I mainly can't stand its clippyesqe suggestions on how I should program (Yes, I know I have not yet used that private field! Thanks Eclipse!), or its incredibly lousy intellisense. For example, in eclipse, if I don't type "this" first, its intellisense won't realize I want to look for locally scoped members. Also, the TAB to complete VS convention is drilled into my head, and Eclipse is ENTER to complete, I could switch everything by hand but that would take hours, and I was hoping someone had some sort of theme or something that has already done it :)

• Alternate User select interface in django admin to reduce page size on large site?

  I have a Django-based site with roughly 300,000 User objects. Admin pages for objects with a ForeignKey field to User take a very long time to load as the resulting form is about 6MB in size. Of course, the resulting dropdown isn't particularly useful, either. Are there any off-the-shelf replacements for handling this case? I've been googling for a snippet or a blog entry, but haven't found anything yet. I'd like to have a smaller download size and a more usable interface.

• Appengine (python) returns empty for valid queries

  I've got an app with around half a million 'records', each of which only stores three fields. I'd like to look up records by a string field with a query, but I'm running into problems. If I visit the console page, manually view a record and save it (without making changes) it shows up in a query: SELECT * FROM wordEntry WHERE wordStr = 'SomeString' If I don't do this, I get 'no results'. Does appengine need time to update? If so, how much? (I was also having trouble batch deleting and modifying data, but I was able to break the problem up into smaller chunks.)

• Jquery autocomplete for input form, using Textpattern category list as a source

  I'm using the Textpattern CMS to build a discussion site-- I have a firm grasp of XHTML and CSS, as well as Textpattern's template language, but PHP and Javascript are a bit beyond my cunning. On the input form to begin a new topic, users need to select a category from a list of over 5,000 options. Using the HTML select-type input element is very unwieldy, but it works. I would like to use some kind of Javascript magic to display a text-type input element that will read user input and display matches or autocomplete from the available categories, passing the required option's value into the appropriate database field. I've seen several autocomplete plugins for jquery, but the instructions presuppose that you understand how Javascript works. As I mentioned above, it's easy for me to generate the category list as a select-type input element, and I can hide that element using CSS. Is it possible to control select-list input using an autocomplete mechanism in a text-type input element? How would I do that?

• Twitter's Bootstrap 2.x popover callback can't focus on element

  I've modified bootstrap's popover function to include a callback which works great. But in the callback I cannot programmatically focus on the first form field. Strange, because I can manipulate other elements in the callback function as well as focus on the element at other points.   I'm looking over .NET ORM implementations, and I have a major burning question - are there any .NET ORM implemenations that don't require public properties for every field in the database? When I see examples like this, a little bell goes off in my head. I firmly believe in encapsulation, and being forced to open the kimono of my objects just to make them work nicely with persistence frameworks gives me the heebie-jeebies. Is this sort of accessibility required in all ORMs out there? If not, please point me to examples of those that don't need it!

  How should I properly implement data access in my custom model binders? Like in controllers I use IContentRepository and then have it create an instance of its implementing class in constructor. So I have everything ready for incorporating IoC (DI) at a later stage. Now I need something similar in model binder. I need to make some DB lookups in the binder. I'm thinking of doing it the same way I do it in controllers but I am open to suggestion. • Using type hints in Clojure for Java return values

  I'm working on some Java / Clojure interoperability and came across a reflection warning for the following code: (defn load-image [resource-name] (javax.imageio.ImageIO/read (.getResource (class javax.imageio.ImageIO) resource-name))) => Reflection warning, clojure/repl.clj:37 - reference to field read can't be resolved. I'm surprised at this because getResource always returns a URL and I would therefore expect the compiler to use the appropriate static method in javax.imageio.ImageIO/read. The code works fine BTW so it is clearly finding the right method at run time. So two questions: Why is this returning a reflection warning? What type hint do I need to fix this?

• Django adminsite customize search_fields query

  Howdy! In the django admin you can set the search_fields for the ModelAdmin to be able to search over the properties given there. My model class has a property that is not a real model property, means it is not within the database table. The property relates to another database table that is not tied to the current model through relations. But I want to be able to search over it, so I have to somehow customize the query the admin site creates to do the filtering when the search field was filled - is this possible and if, how? I can query the database table of my custom property and it then returns the ids of the model classes fitting the search. This then, as I said, has to flow into the admin site search query. Thanks!

• Should app using VCL migrate?

  Is VCL dead, or does it have a future as a GUI library? As CLX ended, is there any chance for cross-platform support in future releases? I've had to do some work with legacy app that uses Borland's VCL(BCB6). Now that new features have to be implemented, it's necessary to revalue alternatives. Whether to stick with VCL or migrate to some other library/framework. I've never read much what's happening in the field Embarcadero(Borland) tools. At least there seems to be only few VCL tagged questions here in SO and no much luck with google either.

  For example, I always generate an auto-increment field for the users table, but I also specify a UNIQUE index on their usernames. There are situations that I first need to get the userId for a given username and then execute the desired query, or use a JOIN in the desired query. It's 2 trips to the database or a JOIN vs. a varchar index. Should I use integer primary IDs? Is there a real performance benefit on INT over small VARCHAR indexes?

• Finding changes in MongoDB database

  I'm designing a MongoDB database that works with a script that periodically polls a resource and gets back a response which is stored in the database. Right now my database has one collection with four fields , id, name, timestamp and data. I need to be able to find out which names had changes in the data field between script runs, and which did not. In pseudocode, if(data[name][timestamp]==data[name][timestamp+1]) //data has not changed store data in collection 1 else //data has changed between script runs for this name store data in collection 2 Is there a query that can do this without iterating and running javascript over each item in the collection? There are millions of documents, so this would be pretty slow. Should I create a new collection named timestamp for every time the script runs? Would that make it faster/more organized? Is there a better schema that could be used? The script runs once a day so I won't run into a namespace limitation any time soon.

• Sqlite and Python -- return a dictionary using fetchone()?

  I'm using sqlite3 in python 2.5. I've created a table that looks like this: create table votes ( bill text, senator_id text, vote text) I'm accessing it with something like this: v_cur.execute("select * from votes") row = v_cur.fetchone() bill = row[0] senator_id = row[1] vote = row[2] What I'd like to be able to do is have fetchone (or some other method) return a dictionary, rather than a list, so that I can refer to the field by name rather than position. For example: bill = row['bill'] senator_id = row['senator_id'] vote = row['vote'] I know you can do this with MySQL, but does anyone know how to do it with SQLite? Thanks!!!

• setting codeigniter mysql datetime column to time() always sets it to 0

  Hi guys. I'm using Codeigniter for a small project, and my model works correctly except for the dates. I have a column defined: created_at datetime not null and my model code includes in its array passed into db-insert: 'created_at' = time() This produces a datetime value of 0000-00-00 00:00:00. When I change it to: 'created_at' = "from_unixtime(" . time() . ")" it still produces the 0 datetime value. What am I doing wrong? How can I set this field to the given unix time? Also, I know mysql sets TIMESTAMP columns automatically for you - I'm not interested in that solution here. So far I can't find a complete example of this on the web.

  Hi, I have read that viewstate is not there in asp.net MVC application. I am doing model validation. Now if i have two text boxes on my page,and i am doing required filed validation for both of them in model. This validation is done on server side on click of a button. I will fill one text box and click on submit button. It does the validation and returns the result saying second field is required. At this time value of the first text box is retained. So can you tell me how this text box is retaining the value even after postback?

• How can I export images from SQL Server to a file on disk?

  I have a User table that has all of their avatars saved in an image field. I'd like to just take that out of the database and store it as a regular file on disk. I looked around and saw some code for textcopy, but that doesn't seem to be on my machine for some reason. Here is the code I wrote up anyway. Anyone know a way to get this done?   Hi guys, I'm working with the jQuery Validation plugin and I wrote the following code which adds a class to the element's parent if not valid (as well as inserting the actual error message at a particular location within the parent): errorPlacement: function(error, element) { element.parent().addClass('error'); error.insertBefore(element.parent().children("br")); } This works, however, if a field's content is corrected and becomes valid, the class obviously doesn't get removed from its parent (actually, neither does the error element, instead it just gets a display: none; CSS property). How can I check if an element becomes valid and remove its parent class if so ? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you !

UPDATE: I need this check working on the MySQL as I need to run it on the server to correct broken tables. I can't pass the data through a script as the database is around 1TB.

• Can't use where clause on correlated columns.

  I want to add a where clause to make sure video_count is greater than zero. Only categories which are referenced once or more in video_category.video_id should be returned. Because video_count is not a field in any table I cannot do this. Here is the query.   Hi, I am new to XML and have been trying some simple examples and they work fine. I want to do something like the following, but I am not able to figure out how to go about doing this. I have a HTML web page, where the user types in some data in an input field. I want to take that data, parse it to create an XML string, and the apply XSLT transformation to it, and display the result back on the page. All this needs to be done on the client browser, with JavaScript. If some one could point out the steps or the general procedure to go about doing this, it would be great. • How to dynamically modify NHibernate load queries at runtime? EventListeners? Interceptors?

  I need to modify the query used to load many-to-one references in my model. Specifically, I need to be able to further filter this data. Unfortunately, NH will not allow me to filter many-to-one relationships using the built in filtering system (?). I could just be doing something incorrect. Is there a hook where I can manually and dynamically modify the query used to load the data? Or an alternative to filters that will allow me to specify parameters? Background: I am working with a database that is using a form of revision control, with each entity having a natural ID PK, an EntityId, a RevisionValidTo and RevisionValidFrom field. There may be many rows using the same EntityId, which is the reference for other tables to join on, but the Revision ranges are mutually exclusive. Thus, the relationship is only many-to-one IIF the filter is applied. However, NH offers no way to specify a filter on many-to-one references (they do for collections...)
