However my OS file system has a limit on the number of sub directories, meaning storing the original folder structure is not going to work. Suggestions? Map the URL to some filename so can store flatly? Or just shove it in a database like sqlite to avoid file system limitations?

  • How do I format a Uri when binding an Image in Silverlight?

    I haven't been able to find an answer to this. I have a database that has image paths in it ("images/myimage.jpg"). These images exist on my asp.net site which is also where I host the SL. I want to bind these images to my ListBox control so that the image displays. I have read that since I have a string value, "images/myimage.jpg", that I need to convert it to a BitMap image. I have done this: the xaml: <Image Source="{Binding ImageFile, Converter={StaticResource ImageConverter}}"/> the ImageConverter class: public object Convert(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, CultureInfo culture) { try { Uri source= new Uri(value.ToString()); return new BitmapImage(source); } catch(Exception ex) { return new BitmapImage(); } } I get an error when creating the Uri, "The Format of the URI could not be determined". What am I doing wrong? If I create a Uri that looks like this: http://localhost:49723/images/myimage.jpg, it works just fine. Why doesn't just "images/myimage.jpg" work?

    Hello, I have a question related to correct handling of returns of the DAO library I'm writing for one project. This library probably is going to be used by another people and I want to do it correctly. So I would like to know, how I should deal with return statements of the functions of my DAO. Example 1 I have function to getCustomer which should return String. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty string or throw some kind of Exception? Example 2 I have function getCutomerList which return ArrayList. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty ArrayList or throw some Exception? Example 3 Some sql exception was detected, what should I do: throw exception or do try..catch of the block where it can occur? What is the "good" practice or "best" practice to apply in my case?   • How to model in J2EE / JEE?

    Let's say, I have decided to go with J(2)EE stack for my enterprise application. Now, for domain modelling (or: for designing the M of MVC), which APIs can I safely assume and use, and which I should stay away from... say, via a layer of abstraction? For example, Should I go ahead and litter my Model with calls to Hibernate/JPA API? Or, should I build an abstraction... a persistence layer of my own to avoid hard-coding against these two specific persistence APIs? Why I ask this: Few years ago, there was this Kodo API which got superseded by Hibernate. If one had designed a persistence layer and coded the rest of the model against this layer (instead of littering the Model with calls to specific vendor API), it would have allowed one to (relatively) easily switch from Kodo to Hibernate to xyz. Is it recommended to make aggressive use of the *QL provided by your persistence vendor in your domain model? I'm not aware of any real-world issues (like performance, scalability, portability, etc) arising out of a heavy use of an HQL-like language. Why I ask this: I would like to avoid, as much as possible, writing custom code when the same could be accomplished via query language that is more portable than SQL. Sorry, but I'm a complete newbie to this area. Where could I find more info on this topic? Many thanks in advance. /HS

    Hi, i'm developing an app which download map tiles around different places in a city. To do this, i have one thread for each place in which i select the tiles and create a thread to download each. Well, the question is how to avoid creating a thread for a tile that already exists in the thread pool. Should not just check if the file exists, since it is possible that the thread for that tile already exists (other place already need that tile) but the file has not been created- Any idea? Thanks

  • The C vs. C++ way

    Hi, So I have to write a program that will iterate through an image and record the pixel locations corresponding to each color pixel that appears in it. For example, given http://www.socuteurl.com/fishywishykissy I need to find the coordinates of all yellow, purple, dark pink, etc pixels. In C++ I would use a hash table to do this. I would iterate through the image, check each pixel's value, look up that value and either add to a vector of pixel coordinates if it were found or add a new entry to the table if the value were not already there. The problem is that I may need to write this program in pure C instead of C++. How would I go about doing this in C? I feel like implementing a hash table would be pretty obnoxious and error-prone: should I avoid doing that? I'm pretty inexperienced with C and have a fair amount of C++ experience, if that matters.   • Handling large (object) datasets with PHP

    I am currently working on a project that extensively relies on the EAV model. Both entities as their attributes are individually represented by a model, sometimes extending other models (or at least, base models). This has worked quite well so far since most areas of the application only rely on filtered sets of entities, and not the entire dataset. Now, however, I need to parse the entire dataset (IE: all entities and all their attributes) in order to provide a sorting/filtering algorithm based on the attributes. The application currently consists of aproximately 2200 entities, each with aproximately 100 attributes. Every entity is represented by a single model (for example Client_Model_Entity) and has a protected property called $_attributes, which is an array of Attribute objects. Each entity object is about 500KB, which results in an incredible load on the server. With 2000 entities, this means a single task would take 1GB of RAM (and a lot of CPU time) in order to work, which is unacceptable. Are there any patterns or common approaches to iterating over such large datasets? Paging is not really an option, since everything has to be taken into account in order to provide the sorting algorithm.

That will proliferate when in need for another "Critical" class that just adds some other property. Does this feel right to you? How could I refactor such code?     Hello I've the following expression in my report. =FormatNumber(MAX(Fields!Reading.Value, "CellReading_Reading"),3) Now when the dataset is empty 'Fields!Reading.Value' becomes empty and finding their maximum is invalid. How can i check if the entire column is empty? I tried the following with no luck. =iif(IsNothing(Fields!.Reading.Value),"",FormatNumber(MAX(Fields!Reading.Value, "CellReading_Reading"),3)) But still i'm getting #Error in the report. I also checked out link and was not able to get a clue from it. I want to handle it in the report level. Thank you. NLV
