• Can't upgrade my Ubuntu server, it gets stuck on openjdk-6-jre-headless

  I am using Ubuntu Server. When I do: apt-get upgrade it gets stuck on: Setting up openjdk-6-jre-headless (6b20-1.9.7-0ubuntu1) ... Why? And what can I do to stop it? I tried removing it with apt-get... I get this error: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. • running localhost mta vs. php smtp'ing via 3rd party api

  so the question is, would it be "better" to run localhost mta (ie. postfix) or "better" to use 3rd party restful api, embedded in the application, to send email? i am curious what people would do here. i find postfix on linux allows much greater flexibility and control. the default sendmail/postfix logging (/var/log/maillog) suits me fine, and you can even set limits via iptables on per uuid's which allows rate-limiting apps.

• how to force an illegal netmask in ubuntu

  I want to force a netmask on my Ubuntu machine. For example, I want 11.0.0.1 to get a netmask of 255.255.255.0 I tried editing /etc/network/interfaces and I forced the desired netmask, but as soon as I restarted the interfaces it changed it back to the default value. When I used ifconfig the netmask that I gave survived the interface restart but it was reset as soon as I rebooted the machine. Is there a way to force an "illegal" netmask on an interface?

• Varnish + Plesk : vhost broken

  I have an e-commerce site with 300,000 products and 20,000 categories. It is slow and currently in production. I decided to install Varnish to speed up. The trouble is that during installation, I got a Guru Meditation. Since the site is in production, I am not allowed to leave this error more than a second, thinking to have made an enormous stupidity. I say that there may be a specific configuration with plesk. Has anyone already installed Varnish on a ubuntu 11.04 server with plesk 10? Does anyone have a better resource? I know it is "very vague" as an error, but maybe some of you have had this problem. edit 24/11/2011 I continued to work on Varnish + Plesk ... but it still does not work. 1) I changed the port for apache in plesk General # mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` -D psa -e'replace into misc (param, val) values ("http_port", 8008)' 1.1) I rebuild the server conf # /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all 2) I changed the apache conf files (if those were not taking full plesk top) vim /etc/apache2/ports.conf NameVirtualHost *:8008 Listen 8008 2.1) I do the same with /etc/apache2/sites-enables/000-default 3) I changed the port of my vhost (a single server) vim /var/www/vhosts/MYDOMAIN.COM/conf/XXXXXXXXX.http.include Replace the port 80 by this I want. • Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Dual monitor works only sometimes (ATI multi-desktop)

  I've been using my laptop with an external LCD monitor attached to it at work (Philips 201E). And at home with a different external monitor (Samsung 2032BW). I have an ATI graphics card (HD3450), with Ati Catalyst drivers enabled and I'm using the Single display desktop (Multi-Desktop) seeting. At work I have the external monitor on the left and laptop on the right, while at home the other way around. So when I switch between the two setups, I just needed to go to Ati Catalyst Control Center, change the order of the displays, change the resolution (Home - 1680x1050, Work - 1440x900), reboot and it was all fine. But since a while it doesn't work properly anymore: At home it still works fine. At work it doesn't work. Sometimes it works for some reason, after a few resolution/setting changes in ACCC and reboots... it's very strange and annoying. With the home monitor I can see the whole bootup process on both monitors (laptop + LCD) and it always just works fine. With the work monitor on the external LCD monitor I just see "No video input" until I get to the login screen, then it shows up there as well. But after login it will either: Flicker a few times, but then work OK. Or (more often) Flicker once and then go back to "No video input" again. I usually end up rebooting a few times until it works. Does anyone have any idea for fixing it? • Can No Longer Find Firefox Spell Check Personal Database in Firefox 3

  I have Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS with Firefox 3.6.3. Unfortunately it is super easy to accidentally click Add To Dictionary on a word you do not want added into one's personal dictionary used in Firefox. How do I remove the word 'intsead' out of it? I tried some tutorials on the web that said to find ~/.mozilla/*.default/persdict.dat, but I could not see one. As well, others have complained that this file no longer exists in Firefox 3.

I've got a working virtual site residing under the default web site, but if I create a new web site in the IIS and asign it a host header value, let it point to the very same file structure as in the prevoiusly mentioned site and finally asign windows integrated security only to the site - I still cannot log in to the new site using MSIE 6 or 8 but FF 3.5 works fine. What is wrong with it? Is it something in the default http.conf that I cannot override? The path used to .htpasswd is correct as it accepts the user/passwd in the case of .php

  I have a Solaris 10 server on another network. I can ping it and telnet to it, but ssh doesn't connect. PuTTY log contains nothing of interest (they both negotiate to ssh v2) and then I get "Event Log: Network error: Software caused connection abort". ssh is defintely running: svcs -a | grep ssh online 12:12:04 svc:/network/ssh:default Here's an extract from the server's /var/adm/messages (anonymised) Jun 8 19:51:05 ******* sshd[26391]: [ID 800047 auth.crit] fatal: Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer However, if I telnet to the box, I can login to ssh locally. • Show the number of messages within a group in Outlook 2010

  In outlook 2010 I am unable to show the number of messages within a particular group. For example, I categorise my messages and then when I sort by category, there is no way to show the number of messages within that(those) category(ies). Previous versions of outlook would do this by default, but I am not finding the setting to do this in Outlook 2010. If it isn't possible, is there anything method to count those messages within a group/category easily?

• Windows Authentication with IIS7 with public facing website

  By default in IIS7, Windows Authentication was turned off and I had to make a configuration change to activate it. When I did that there was a description for Windows Authentication that explained this should only be used for intranet sites, not public facing websites. When you consider NTLM/Kerberos does not use plain text I am not sure why Microsoft have decided this, all of a sudden. Can anybody explain?

  I need to run the SFTP fileserver binary as root, but direct root login is not allowed. In WinSCP, if I use "default" on SFTP server protocol option everything works as expected. Following the instructions to sudo in WinSCP, I tried using "sudo /usr/sbin/proftpd" (works on the command line without any prompts) but it brings up "Cannot initialize SFTP protocol. Is the host running a SFTP server?" How to use sudo with WinSCP and ProFTPd?
