Adding a clustered index to a SQL table: what dangers exist for a live production system?

Right, keep in mind i need to describe this by abstracting all possible confidential info: I've been put in charge of a 10-year old transactional system of which the majority business logic is implemented at database level (triggers, stored procedures etc). Win2000 server, MSSQL 2000 Enterprise. No immediate plans for replacing/updating the system are being considered :( The core process is a program that executes transactions - specifically, it executes a stored procedure with various parameters, lets call it sp_ProcessTrans. The program executes the stored procedure at asynchronous intervals. By itself, things work fine. But there are 30 instances of this program on remotely located workstations, all of them asynchronously executing sp_ProcessTrans and then retrieving data from the SQL server (execution is pretty regular - ranging 0 to 60 times a minute, depending on what items the program instance is responsible for) . Performance of the system has dropped considerably with 10 yrs of data growth: the reason is the deadlocks and specifically deadlock wait times. The deadlock is on the Employee table. I have discovered: In sp_ProcessTrans' execution, it selects from an Employee table 7 times (dont ask) The select is done on a field that is NOT the primary key No index exists on this field. Thus a table scan is performed. 7 times. per transaction So the reason for deadlocks is clear. I created a non-unique ordered clustered index on the field (field looks good, almost unique, NUM(7), very rarely changes). Immediate improvement in the test environment. The problem is that i cannot simulate the deadlocks in a test environment (I'd need 30 workstations; i'd need to simulate 'realistic' activity on those stations, so visualization is out). I need to know if i must schedule downtime. Creating an index shouldn't be a risky operation for MSSQL, but is there any danger (data corruption in transactions/select statements/extra wait time etc) to create this field index on the production database while the transactions are still taking place? (although i can select a time when transactions are fairly quiet through the 30 stations) Are there any hidden dangers i'm not seeing (not looking forward to needing to restore the DB if something goes wrong, restoring would take a lot of time with 10yrs of data).

build-helper-maven-plugin add-source does not working when trying to add linked resources

I am new to maven and hit a problem that looks easy in the first place but I already kept me busy for a whole day about and no way to get it working. It looks like by default the build-helper-maven-plugin will check if the folder is there and if it is not it won’t add it. I am using maven 3.0.4 outside eclipse to run the build and I can see in the maven logs something like this: [INFO] Source directory: <some path>\properties added. This is my project structure: project1 \-- properties (this is the real folder) project2 \-- some_real_folder \-- properties (this is the link resource pointing to the project1/properties folder) All I need is to have both "some_real_folder" and the linked resource "properties" added to the .classpath of the project2

Rails controller not rendering correct view when form is force-submitted by Javascript

I'm using Rails with jQuery, and I'm working on a page for a simple site that prints each record to a table. The only editable field for each record is a checkbox. My goal is that every time a checkbox is changed, an ajax request updates that boolean attribute for the record (i.e., no submit button). The contents of this file is currently just for testing (I just wanted to see if it worked, this will not be the ultimate functionality on a successful save)... page << "$('#checkbox#{@lead.id}').hide();" When clicked, the ajax request is successfully sent, with the correct params, and the action on the controller can retrieve the record and update it just fine. The problem is that it doesn't send back the JS; it changes the page in the browser and renders the generated Javascript as plain text rather than executing it in-place. Rails does some behind-the-scenes stuff to figure out if the incoming request is an ajax call, and I can't figure out why it's interpreting the incoming request as a regular web request as opposed to an ajax request. I may be missing something extremely simple here, but I've kind-of burned myself out looking so I thought I'd ask for another pair of eyes. Thanks in advance for any info!

Can't access Elements previously created by innerHTML with Javascript/Prototype

Question: Can I somehow "revalidate" the dom or access elements that have been inserted with innerHTML? Edit Info: document.getElementById("akas-admin").submit() works just fine, problem is i don't want to reload the whole page but post the form over ajax and get the response text in a callback function. [C++] std::tring manipulation: whitespace, "newline escapes '\'" and comments #

Kind of looking for affirmation here. I have some hand-written code, which I'm not shy to say I'm proud of, which reads a file, removes leading whitespace, processes newline escapes '\' and removes comments starting with #. It also removes all empty lines (also whitespace-only ones). Any thoughts/recommendations? User control events not getting to their handlers

c++ program debugged well with Cygwin4 (under Netbeans 7.2) but not with MinGW (under QT 4.8.1)

I have a c++ program which take a map text file and output it to a graph data structure I have made, I am using QT as I needed cross-platform program and GUI as well as visual representation of the map. I have several maps in different sizes (8x8 to 4096x4096). I am using unordered_map with a vector as key and vertex as value, I'm sending hash(1) and equal functions which I wrote to the unordered_map in creation. Under QT I am debugging my program with QT 4.8.1 for desktop MinGW (QT SDK), the program works and debug well until I try the largest map of 4096x4096, then the program stuck with the following error: "the inferior stopped because it received a signal from operating system", when debugging, the program halt at the hash function which used inside the unordered_map and not as part of the insertion state, but at a getter(2). I am building an application with Codeigniter and need some help with a DB query. [c#] SoundPlayer.PlaySync stopping prematurely

I want to play a wav file synchronously on the gui thread, but my call to PlaySync is returning early (and prematurely stopping playback). The wav file is 2-3 minutes. I tried lengthening the load timeout, but that did nothing. I'm not quite sure what the best way to get the duration of a wav file is without using code written by somebody who isn't me/Microsoft. I suppose this can be calculated since I know the file size, and all of the encoding properties (bitrate, sample rate, sample size, etc) are consistent across all files I intend to play. Can somebody elaborate on how to calculate the duration of a wav file using this info? That is, if nobody has an idea about why PlaySync is returning early. Of Note: I encountered a similar problem in VB 6 a while ago, but that was caused by a timeout, which I don't suspect to be a problem here. Shorter (< 1min) files seem to play fine, so I might decide to manually edit the longer files down, then play them separately with multiple calls.

I am trying to build an extension that will allow users to put some parameters into a text box in the popup, generate a link using that information and add it to the said popup. I have all that working, but needless to say, it gets flushed every time the user opens the extension anew. I'd like the info that has been put in there to stay, but can't seem to get it to work. I'm storing expanded SVN keyword literals for .cpp files in 'static char const *const' class members and want to store the .h descriptions as similarly as possible. In short, I need to guarantee single instantiation of a static member (presumably in a .cpp file) to an auto-generated non-integer literal living in a potentially shared .h file. Unfortunately the language makes no attempt to resolve multiple instantiations resulting from assignments made outside class definitions and explicitly forbids non-integer inits inside class definitions. My best attempt (using static-wrapping internal classes) is not too dirty, but I'd really like to do better. VB.Net 2008 IDE hanging - MSVB7.dll eating 100% CPU when editing code

I am having a problem with msvb7.dll eating 50%+ cpu on my dual core system. This usually lasts 10-30 seconds or so, during which time the IDE is non-responsive. This occurs when I do pretty much anything in the text editor, and can be replicated by simply adding blank lines to a function, and then deleting them. Or pasting some code. Or... lotsa stuff. SP1 installed I had DevExpress' refactor/coderush, components, and codeit.right installed, but have removed all 3 of them. (I had installed the latest version of Refactor Pro! (9.3.4), perhaps the day before) I have tried a VS.NET Repair. There is a kb that referenced some cpu destroying with vb, but it was included in SP1 Also: The solution consists of ~30 VB projects and 2 C# projects 8 other developers aren't having any issues with this (or at least not the SAME issues, we all have em) Clean get from TFS was done Project builds properly, can can even debug. This doesn't seem to happen on really small solutions, but perhaps it does and it just goes away super quick. Any clues at all as to what might be causing this, or how to fix it? I REALLY don't want to lose another day uninstalling and reinstalling and patching and so on =) If that even fixes it. Javascript click function for multiple Classes

So basically I have this little social networking site which allow comments. I've built a comment section that will slide down once a user clicks "Comment" and it slides down under the users status. My problem is that right now, the JavaScript only works on ONE post ID, and not the rest obviously seeing you can only use an ID once. But of course if I use classes instead, All the comment sections slide down because now they're all the same class. See below for my HTML and JavaScript. I tried putting :checked = true in the index.html.haml on the check_box_tag but that makes the checkboxes checked everytime the page is refreshed. Everytime I check a particular checkbox and hit refresh button the page loads with all the checkboxes checked. Please help me with this. Thank you in Advance.
