  How to run node.js on host with linux platform? To run node.js on localhost with windows operation system is simple I download package from nodejs.org/download/ and I execute Windows Installer (.msi) I go to console command line and I type node file.js and everything fine. but in my host with linux platform I have control panel with no option to run type file exe, msi and there is no window with command line, So how can I be able to run nodejs on my host? • Video Bug after a fresh installation

  Hello, I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 (I'm brand new to Ubuntu) on my laptop. I seem to have a video bug that I don't know how to deal with. When the log-in screen comes up, the boxes are way off in the corner of the screen (partially off it). When I enter my password, the screen goes black for a few seconds, then returns to the login screen. I can open a Terminal window and enter my login info that way. When I go back to Gnome (Ctrl+Alt+F7 or whatever) it shows me as "logged in" but I still can't get to the desktop. If anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it--just try to use simple language, please, since I really don't know Linux at all yet! I'm running an Averatec 3700 Series: Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+ 512 MB DDR, 80 GB HDD After looking at this question I tried going in through Failsafe mode (took me a while to figure out the hold-shift-while-booting thing _<) and playing around with the resolution. Setting a somewhat wider resolution did seem to fix things so that I can log into regular GNOME, I think. I'm not sure if this fix will persist, but it seems like it might!

• Visual Studio Express 2012 - Moving items to tab control loses actions

  VS 2012 Express on Windows 7 Professional, this was pre SP1 install. I have a windows form that I had several elements (Listboxes, buttons, text and labels), with some actions associated with changing indices on the list boxes and of course the button actions. I decided I wanted to add a tab control to enable a second tab with a different feature set, so I copied/cut/pasted all of the original items to a tab control that I added. When I did this, all of the elements lost their click action in the events window. I had to go and re-associate all of them. Is this a normal behavior/known issue, or is there some method to move controls that I am not aware of?

• Virtual Screen Splitter

  I am looking for a utility that will allow my screen to be split into two sections. I would like to do this so that programs can easily fill or get sized properly to one part of the screen. This way I can pretend that I have a separate monitor for working on my stuff, while my kids can watch something on the other side. In addition, this should help prevent any popups covering up their side of the screen. Although Windows 7 comes with ability to drag a program window to a side and it becomes sized to half of the screen automatically, this is insufficient for me. I would like to make sure that any programs I launch or any pop-ups that open up, do not block the other side of the screen, even for a short time. Also, I am not looking for a virtual OS solution, as in VirtualBox.

  I am looking for software that reports statistics about my program usage over time. It should display output something like this (numbers are made up): Program usage today: Youtube (Chrome) 42:10 9.42% NetBeans 30:52 6.33% Google search (Chrome) 12:03 3.20% Windows explorer 5:43 1.54% Putty 2:23 0.89% ? ? ? Features I look for: Advanced statistics: ability to view a chart, to see statistics today, this week, this month. Program usage should be based on the title of the active window. The time where the user is idle shouldn't count. Ability to group some windows title together, for example, I want to group titles as Stack Overflow and * - Stack Overflow together, same thing for every website and explorer windows. Do you know a program that does something similar?

  I installed Ubuntu in a VM using VirtualBox, and after a few hours of Googling all the things I had to install and configure for the rest of the environment, I am finally up and running with a Ruby on Rails IDE and have MySql up and running. After I start up the Ubuntu VM, I have to go to a terminal window and do this to start MySql: /etc/init.d/mysql start So that works fine, but, since I am such a GUI person, I’m wondering how I can create an icon on the Ubuntu Desktop that I can click on to launch this command. Can you tell me how to do that?

• Ubuntu install can't find hard drives

  I recently got a Dell Inspiron Special Edition 7720 computer. I am trying to install Ubuntu along side Windows. When I use the WUBI installer, the installation of Ubuntu works as long as I do not boot into Windows; if I boot into Windows, when I go back into Ubuntu, I am given a variety of error messages which claim to have corrupt or missing kernel/root directory, etc. I have been working with this problem for about a week, and have reinstalled Ubuntu MANY times. So far, I have eliminated all of the following problems: Corrupt WUBI installation (Downloaded multiple times, used on other systems), I have tried using a CD and a flash drive, both of which work on other computers. I know that no program within Ubuntu is creating the problem. I know that others have successfully installed Ubuntu on a computer with my operating system (Windows 7 SP1). This is a much shortened version of the original question, which has been up for about 5 days, and included a more detailed description of the problem, but left everyone clueless as to the source of this problem. When I spoke with the Dell service technician who came over today to replace my keyboard, he suggested that the driver for my HDD was so new that it was not compatible with the current version of Ubuntu. His reasoning is as follows: 1) During an install from a flash drive or CD, where I am supposed to get the option to wipe my system or create a dual boot, I get a window that asks me to select a hard drive partition, but none are listed. 2) This model of computer was made public in June of this year, while Ubuntu was released in April Adopting this theory, it would seem to me that the WUBI install fails after booting into Windows because Ubuntu can no longer find the files that it needs to load. Does this theory seem at all plausible to anyone? I just want to install Ubuntu and have it stay on my computer. I don't care how I put it there, I just need it to work, so I would TRULY appreciate any advice or suggestions anyone could give. Thanks so much for your time and support!!!

• Extend university wifi network

  i live in a university campus and i can get wifi signal on the outside of my window but not in the house. The solution i use at the moment is a usb wifi dongle outside connected to my laptop but the lack of an internal antenna make the connection quite unreliable at times. So i was trying to find another solution to improve the reception of my network. One idea is to setup a router on the outside (in a place with stronger signal) and redirect the connection inside the house with an ethernet cable but the problem is that our Uni Wifi is managed by a capitve portal (BlueSocket with DNS redirection to login page) and the authentication has to happen on the mac address that connect to the net (so the client appliance in this case). If I use a router with Mac-Clone capability i will be able to be redirected trough the captive portal on my laptop computer and login from there or i need to setup my router to fill in the login page by itself? There are other hardware/software solutions i can use to get what i want?

• Old Fglrx Driver - AMD Radeon HD 3200 - ubuntu won't start

  I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit for about 2 weeks now and I installed the latest Fglrx driver (Graphics Card- AMD HD 3200, PC- Acer Aspire 5336, 4GB RAM, 500GB Harddrive). The problem is that sometimes video's lag and play out of sync sometimes the windows take long to show up after I've clicked them etc. After looking around I found a video on Youtube by Ubuntu help guy and in the video he recommended using an older driver if you have an older graphics card, his was about 4 years old (same as mine) and he used the 11.10 catalyst driver so I decided to try it. I removed the previous installation of the driver and then installed the 11.10 driver. However, when I restarted it instead of going to the GUI it goes to a terminal like window and asks for my login. Now its pretty clear I need to remove the old driver and go back to using the latest one. The only problem is I'm not sure where I saved the latest driver and in order to connect to the Internet I need to change /etc/resolv.conf (I use a static IP). So what should I do? Also anyone from personal experience, what propitiatory driver works best with my graphics card? As in the version. Thanks

• Sharepoint 2007 reset permission inheritance

  I have this SharePoint 2007 document library which has several levels of folders and files. Some folders in the middle of the hierarchy do not inherit permissions from their parents and have their unique permissions defined. It is a huge library and there are many folders like this. I am currently changing the permission model of my library and I want to reset all those unique permissions and have all of them inherit permissions from the library root. (Something like "Replace child object permissions" checkbox available in windows files system security window) If this is not possible, seeing a list of folders that have their unique permissions defined would also do.

• Can't unlock locked screen, in Ubuntu 12

  After locking the screen (with a keystroke bound to xlock -nice 8 -mode blank), I can unlock the screen as expected, but only within a few minutes. After being locked overnight, when I hit a key (even Ctrl+Alt combos), the screen stays black with just a brief white flash across the middle of both monitors. The workaround is to ssh in from another host and restart X. Some months ago, this happened every few weeks. By now it happens almost every morning. How do I even start to diagnose this? What might I look for in log files? (The intermittency is particularly troubling.) Failing that, is there an alternative to xlock aka xlockmore? Hardware: 3-year-old HP minitower, GEForce 9800 GT, two Asus LCD monitors. Software: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS. Window manager awesome-wm. NVidia driver 304.88. XLock version xlockmore-5.31.

• Windows Recovery from Grub messed up my computer?

  Ok so I'm a noob when it comes to Operating Systems and I think I really messed up this time. So I have a laptop that dual boots Windows 7 and Linux Mint 11. I was trying to boot into Windows 7 but it would just have a black screen with a blinking cursor. So I turned off my computer and tried again. Still a black screen with a cursor. So I thought "well it must be broken somehow and I remembered seeing something like 'Windows Recovery' from the boot menu so I should try it." So when I turned on my computer a third time I selected 'Windows Recovery' (Something like that I can't remember exactly what it was called). After I had selected that I got a white Windows window that said in big red letters "ERROR". I turned off my computer again a turned it back on expecting the Grub menu to reappear. I was wrong. Instead I am greeted with error: no such partition grub rescue. Then I put in a live CD for ubuntu 11.04 and tried looking at my partitions using the disk manager. Looking at my partitions I notice that there isn't a Linux partition anymore and in its place is a unallocated space partition yet the Linux Swap partition is still there. My windows partition is still fine and I can access the files in it. If you understand what has happened, is there anyway I can get my files back? I don't care about reinstalling the OS again. I just want those files that are in the Linux Mint partition.

• Outlook 2010 : "An error occurred when setting schedule permissions"

  Computer: Windows 7 x64 Enterprise. Office 2010 with Outlook 2010. Exchange account and a couple of IMAP accounts connected to the Outlook profile. Error: When attempting to share the calendar with anyone (selected from the address book) by click on "Calendar Permissions" seen here You can add or remove people without issue, except that no matter what, even if nothing is done, just opening the sharing window and closing it, you get an error message that says "An error occurred when setting schedule permissions" Verified that the issue doesnt actually effect the sharing, or the general setting of permissions. The error however is disconcerting to my user, and I would like to alleviate the problem if possible. Thanks!

• Ditto (clipboard manager): can't set shortcut of Win+<num>. Get “Error Registering Position 1”

  Somone made a Youtube video on Ditto, and that person uses Win+Num to paste items from the list. He put a screenshot of his settings on Google Plus: When I try to do the same, which is to put “1” in the text field of Position 1, and check the “Win” box to add the Windows key as the sole modifier for the shortcut, which will be Win + 1, I get an error in that says “Error Registering Position 1” in a window titled CP_Main: Could it be because Win+Num conflicts with the natural Win+Num shortcut (starts the application pinned to the taskbar in that position, or switches to that program) of Windows 7?   I like to play some downloaded Shockwave Flash (.SWF) files without opening my internet browser. Sometime ago, I remember I could do it just double clicking on the SWF item. Then it was opening in a plain Shockwave window. Now XP won't play ball. I tried Folder Options > File types but couldn't find the associated player exe. How can I surpass this? Edit: There has to be some way to do this without a 3rd party software since I can already play SWFs on my browsers.

• "Empty" Outlook 2010 address book (despite having over 1,000 contacts)

  I am in the process of migrating our users to Office 365. After adding the Exchange Online account for a user in their Outlook 2010 client (and importing their old emails), I then copy their contacts from their old address book into the new one. For some users, this works perfectly - all their original contacts immediately appear in their Office 365 address book as expected. Unfortunately, many of our users see their contacts only when looking in the "Contacts" tab. They get the message: "Your search yielded no results" when drilling down to their Office 365 contact list in the Address Book window. I have been able to reproduce this problem on multiple PCs and cannot see what sets them apart from the ones which work properly. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

• 3 Monitors on a Notebook

  I would like to use 3 screens on my Dell Inspiron 1720 So On the laptop built in screen have that as one, and then have 2 more screens. The catch is, that I want to play racing games with this set-up. So that my main screen is the focus area (the front window if you will) and the other 2 screens will be used for peripheral vision, on the side. The software that I use (LFS.net) does support multiple screens. However the notebook can have the main screen on, and another external screen. So I would need to split this "second" monitor output, to 2 screens, the one to the left of the main monitor, and the other one to the right. Is this possible? Is there perhaps a external card / docking station solution that could help with this? Any advice or ideas is greatly appreciated. Best Regards Rihan

• How can I remove unwanted cropped pages from Acrobat

  Executing the crop command in Acrobat from a 3000pt * 2000pt document to 1500pt*1800pt only hides the document outside of the new boundaries but the original document still remains without change; if anyone uses the touch-up tool and moves the content, all "hidden" information outside the cropped page may appear again by dragging it into view. The page acting as a window (or a mask) to display the 3000pt * 2000pt. I am wondering if there is a solution to crop permanently the document without reprinting it again into PDF file?   I made a small introduction to RequireJS via some of the many cool new RequireJS features in NetBeans IDE. I believe RequireJS, and the modularity and encapsulation and loading solutions that it brings, provides the tools needed for creating large JavaScript applications, i.e., enterprise JavaScript applications. &amp;amp;lt;span id=&amp;amp;quot;XinhaEditingPostion&amp;amp;quot;&amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;lt;/span&amp;amp;gt; (Sorry for the wobbly sound in the above.) An interesting comment by my colleague John Brock on the above: One other advantage that RequireJS brings, is called lazy loading of resources. In your first example, everyone one of those .js files is loaded when the first file is loaded in the browser. By using the require() call in your modules, your application will only load the javascript modules when they are actually needed. It makes for faster startup in large applications. You could show this by showing the libraries that are loaded in the Network Monitor window. So I did as suggested: Click the screenshot to enlarge it and notice how the Network Monitor is helpful in the context of RequireJS troubleshooting.

I can't find any documentation in the man page about what these numbers mean, and it's difficult to search since Google throws away the brackets and slash. • Altering the Windows 7 grouping thumbnail preview

  I like the windows 7 grouping behaviour for multiple similar windows, except when I have multiple Explorer windows open. In this case, showing thumbnails of each open explorer window is next to useless, and I would like to know how to either: Disable thumbnail display completely (but preserve the grouping behaviour) Disable thumbnail display for a subset of programs (all explorer.exe instances) Change the number of similar programs that are open before the grouping behaviour falls back on a more sensible text preview when hovering over the taskbar icon (currently 14 or over) I don't particularly want to disable any other features of windows to get this behaviour, so disabling the theme compleletely isn't what I want to do. I definitely want to keep the grouping behaviour. Its just those thumbnail previews I would like to alter. • Linux: how to "zoom" into a screen area à la Mac OS X?

  It seems to me on Mac OS X it is possible to "zoom" (like a photocamera does) into a region of the screen. It is handy for example to put at full monitor size a video which would otherwise be limited to be just into a small window (ie. embedded in a web page and not watchable standalone.), obviously losing some quality due to the "zoom". Do you know of any tool or way to do the same thing on a Linux desktop (with Gnome as desktop manager if it is desktop manager dependant). Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

• Rendering 8 bit graphics

  I have a strong programming background just not from game development. I only made some pong and snake in high school and I did some OpenGL in college. I want to make my own game engine. Nothing fancy just a simple 2D game engine. But because I'm kinda old school and feeling retro. I want graphics to look like old 8 bit games (megaman, contra, super mario, ...). So how were the old games made back then? I want the simplest approach. Were they also using assets (images) like newer engines now do? How do you achieve this kind of rendering using OpenGL? Keep in mind. Simplest solution. I want to know how it was made back then and how I can replicate that. Doesn't even have to be OpenGL. I can draw on window canvas. I do want to make it from scratch basically.
