• Sigmatel sound card not working on an Dell XPS m2010

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.4 on my dell xps m2010 using wubi. Then booted up and could not connect to the Internet using 3three huawei e122 usb mobile broadband (I would like this to work also). I've managed to connect through a wireless network, I went to my favorite sites and was told I needed to install adobe flash player.This what I did players run and picture is good. But there is no sound! Then I've tried to play songs in Banshee, but no sound. I have checked everything in sound preferences including test speaker, there is sound. I have sigmatel sound card. • On-the-fly lossless image compression

  I have an embedded application where an image scanner sends out a stream of 16-bit pixels that are later assembled to a grayscale image. As I need to both save this data locally and forward it to a network interface, I'd like to compress the data stream to reduce the required storage space and network bandwidth. Is there a simple algorithm that I can use to losslessly compress the pixel data? I first thought of computing the difference between two consecutive pixels and then encoding this difference with a Huffman code. Unfortunately, the pixels are unsigned 16-bit quantities so the difference can be anywhere in the range -65535 .. +65535 which leads to potentially huge codeword lengths. If a few really long codewords occur in a row, I'll run into buffer overflow problems.

• Consuming Web Services requiring Authentication from behind Proxy server

  Hi All, I've seen a number of post about Proxy Authentication, but none that seams to address this problem. I'm building a SharePoint Web Service consuming desktop application, using Java, JAX-WS in NetBeans. I have a working prototype, that can query the server for authentication mode, successfully authenticate and retrieve a list of web site. However, if I run the same app from a network that is behind a proxy server (the proxy does not require authentication), then I'm running into trouble. The normal -dhttp.proxyHost ... settings does not seam to help any. But I have found that by creating a ProxySelector class and setting it as default, I can regain access to the authentication web service, but I still can't retrieve the list of web sites from the SharePoint server. It's almost as if the authentication I provide is going to the proxy rather than the SharePoint server. Anyone have any experience on how to make this work? • My hardware needs a module to be blacklisted to work, how can I get this fix shipped?

  I have an Acer Timeline 1830T. When I install 10.10 and 11.04 it needs to have the acer-wmi module blacklisted for wireless to work. I think I need to file a bug on the linux kernel but I am not sure. I've heard the term "quirk" being thrown around by developers when it comes to fixing something so that it works on certain pieces of hardware. Is this indeed a kernel bug? What steps should I take to ensure that this gets reported so that everyone with my laptop doesn't have to go through this over and over?

• Socksifying a Java ServerSocket - how to approach

  I would like to have a Java program running on network A have a ServerSocket living on another network B through a proxy. I have played with a SOCKS5 proxy (which works) but it appears that all the proxy facilities in Java only work with client connections, not with ServerSockets (no constructor taking a Proxy argument). Asking Google gives much hay and few needles. What is the approach I should take to get this running? If a specific client is better than a generic SOCKS or web proxy then fine, but it needs to be Java (that leaves sshd out). Target JVM is preferrably Java 5, and then Java 6.

• Microsoft releases Bing iPhone app

  As its officials have been hinting and promising for a while now, Microsoft announced it has developed a version of its Bing search app for the iPhone. The new Bing app is available on the iPhone app store as of tonight (December 15). Microsoft already offers Bing on a number of mobile phones, and has a five-year deal with Verizon to provide Bing on a number of phones available to Verizon Wireless customers. A mobile version of Bing already is available for Windows Mobile, Blackberry, BREW and Sidekick devices on Verizon. In other Bing news, Microsoft has finally hit the 10 percent market share mark with Bing, according to the November U.S. search share data from comScore. • IOKit header assert.h gone? [answered]

  I want to get the hardware address of my mac's ethernet card. In all samples I saw in include on IOKit/assert.h . Which doesn't seem to exist on my system. GCC throws an error saying he doesn't know the type IOEthernetAddress. Is assert.h necessary for my task? It would be great if someone coud give me a working sample. • What's a good way to copy files from a PC to a Windows Mobile device?

  I have a C# application running on a server, and it needs to copy files out to multiple Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. These devices are connected to the network directly via Ethernet-enabled cradles (so they are not connected to a PC via ActiveSync). What different options do I have for doing this? I know RAPI can do this, but I'm not sure if it can copy something directly over the network like this. Also, I know RAPI uses ActiveSync DLLs and thus requires ActiveSync to be installed, and we would prefer to avoid doing this if possible. Is WMI a possibility? Can we use ordinary File.IO if we can somehow get the IP address of each device? Code samples or general knowledge would be most welcome.

  Hi - Receiving recommendations for commercial TCP/IP stack implementation based on FreeBSD or NetBSD. Requirements are similar to a typical desktop PC running a browser, email and streaming voice/video. Which is to say a rich network functionality for a end-host type of device with mature implementation and reasonable performance. BSD derived network stacks are deployed in wide variety of situations for years and hence have mature implementation. It's supposed to run on a proprietary RTOS. Most vendors I found don't advertise if their stack is based on BSD. Any recommendations? -- Vineet

• .NET Impersonate and file upload issues

  I have a webpage that allows a user to upload a file to a network share. When I run the webpage locally (within VS 2008) and try to upload the file, it works! However, when I deploy the website to the webserver and try to upload the file through the webpage, it doesn't work! The error being returned to me on the webserver says "Access to the path '\05prd1\emp\test.txt' is denied. So, obviously, this is a permissions issue. The network share is configured to allow full access both to me (NT authentication) and to the NETWORK SERVICE (which is .NET's default account and what we have set in our IIS application pool as the default user for this website). I have tried this with and without impersonation upon the webserver and neither way works, yet both ways work on my local machine (in other words, with and without impersonation works on my local machine). The code that does the file upload is below. • C# MySQL Lost Connection

  Hi. I have C# application and I'm using MySQL database. Everything seems to be fine except one thing. Our computer network is little bit unstable. When I'm trying to execute query and the computer simultaneously loses connection to the mysql server (I'm simulating this situation by unplugging the network cable from computer which is mysql server), the program is trying to do something for long time (tens seconds). I would like to specify something like timeout which ends the query by exception or something similar. I tried to add timeout parameters to connection string but with no effect (I've used ConnectionTimeout and DefaultCommandTimeout). Is there any other way to identify lost connection after few seconds? Thank you Adam P.S. Sorry for my english, I'm not native speaker.

• NAS disk - problem with accessing SAMBA

  Hello I have a NAS disk running on some version of Linux. The disk is located in local network (5 PC running XP or Vista, all connected to Linksys Router). I have problems accessing NAS resources through SAMBA. The 1st issue is that the NAS is not accessible through hostname (even if it is configured), 2nd point is that it is mostly not accessible through IP manner (\IP_OF_NAS). Rest of services (FTP, HTTP access) works flawlessly. I connected the NAS to my home network (only 1 WinXP and Linsys router) and the NAS is working fine - SAMBA access together with hostname recognition works perfectly. I wonder this is an issue with WINS? Could anybody help? Regards

• Raspberry Pi cluster, neuron networks and brain simulation

  Since the RBPI (Raspberry Pi) has very low power consumption and very low production price, it means one could build a very big cluster with those. I'm not sure, but a cluster of 100000 RBPI would take little power and little room. Now I think it might not be as powerful as existing supercomputers in terms of FLOPS or others sorts of computing measurements, but could it allow better neuronal network simulation ? I'm not sure if saying "1 CPU = 1 neuron" is a reasonable statement, but it seems valid enough. So does it mean such a cluster would more efficient for neuronal network simulation, since it's far more parallel than other classical clusters ?

  hi all, I'm writing an app which connects to a static ip adress in a local network. How can I check if I have a local network connection? I want to connect to http://192.168.2.5 and i tried using the Rechability class but it returns FALSE, while the device is definately connected ( when i don't do the check, the app works fine so there is a connection ): Reachability *r = [Reachability reachabilityWithHostName:@"http://192.168.2.5"]; NetworkStatus internetStatus = [r currentReachabilityStatus]; How should work this out? • Installation taking a very long time

  I am installing Ubuntu 14.04(32-bit) on my laptop (Compaq Presario V2000), and after about 7 hours, it is still in Congiguring bcmwl-kernel-source (i386) mode. The messages I read are as follows: ubuntu kernel: [22814.858163] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC0.LPC0.ACAD: ACPI_NOTIFY_BUS_CHECK event: unsupported with the numbers in the square brackets increasing. I have had Windows XP professional on this laptop, and I am erasing it. I am not sure if I should turn off the laptop, and start all over again. About 4 years ago I installed Ubuntu on this laptop, and that was very fast. The only problem I encountered was my wireless, and could not make it to work, and switched back to Windows. I appreciate any comments regarding this installation taking such a long time.

• After re-installing ubuntu 13.10, stuck at GRUB Rescue, Boot-Repair didn't work!

  Because i could not get the WiFi login work, i thought i will reinstall ubuntu, with internet connection to have updated drivers for wireless & graphics etc. I have deleted earlier linux partitions usings gparted and re-installed ubuntu 13.10, exactly following the same steps as i did earlier, making a 100GB /home on dev/sda and pointing root to /dev/sdb (SSD) and swap on dev/sda/ . Installing boot on /dev/sdb. But, somehow i think the grub is either corrupted or removed because i am unable to boot the laptop to any OS now. I get the following message: "no such device" xxxxx followed by huge HEX number GRUB rescue when i type ls on Grub rescue prompt, i can see hd0 & hd1, but thats about it. i tried Boot-repair but it is unable to fix the problem. The following log is generated via boot-repair create log: Boot-repair log I am unable to boot into windows or linux at the moment and need help to fix the grub so i can boot !!

  Hello All, I am using IIS 7 on Server 2008. I just tried migrating my app from an older platform - everything works fine, except the email feature. This is my config: < mailSettings > < smtp from="[email protected]" deliveryMethod="Network" > < network host="mail.xyz.com" port="25" userName="[email protected]" password="123" /> < / smtp > < /mailSettings > Whenever I need to send an email I use: SmtpClient smtp = new SmtpClient(); smtp.Send(email); The funny thing is I get absolutely no errors, however the email is never sent. The outbound firewall ruleset allows SMTP traffic. Any idea what I did wrong?
