• model association or controller?

  I'm trying to create a rails app that allows users to submit information about their pets. I've come to a point where my knowledge is limited and I don't know enough about what/how this could be done so I'm hoping this will be relatively easy to answer. At the moment I have a model called Pet, this model currently stores basic information like name, picture etc but it also holds more specific data like type, breed, date of birth etc. What I would like to be able to do is create a page that can match various records without having to be manually categorized if that makes sense so a users pet could be matched to other pets with the same breed, age etc. I've read about nested models as I understand this information could be submitted to 2 models in one form but I am not sure whether this could be done directly in a separate controller which would only be visible to users with pets in these matched "groups" if that makes sense. So in essence is it best practice to use 1 table to store all the information and just use a controller to match pets based on rows having the same values or would it be far simpler to have a form with a nested model and link 2 tables together? The main feature needs to be matching without a user having to create a group or categorize pets so the second model would need to add id's to an array instead of just creating more and more rows.

• Lubuntu 13.04, kernel still 3.8.0-32-generic

  My question is very similar to Ubuntu 13.10, kernel still 3.8.0-31-generic. Recently was updating to Saucy and the ethernet cable got unplugged. So I decided to run Software Update again, to reinstall files. It returned that "everything is up to date". But according to these command-line searches, that is incorrect. • Selectively Including files in C#.net web application [migrated]

  I am attempting to modify an application with the following characteristics: Written in C#.net Using Visual Studio 2010 The application uses a Master sheet to maintain commonality The Master sheet has the following: <%@ Master Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="mysheet.master.cs" Inherits="master_mysheet" %> Now, currently, the master sheet has an include file that brings in a common footer: #include file="inc/my-footer.inc" Here's what I want to do: I would like to modify the master sheet to be able to read in a footer based on the value contained in a session variable... i.e. (not real code, but just something to give an idea of what I want) if session("x") = "a" then #include file="inc/my-footer1.inc" else #include file="inc/my-footer2.inc" My first instinct was to go with some vbscript: <script type="text/vbscript" language="vbscript"> document.write("vbscript example.") </script> However, it doesn't run the vbscript code automatically on page load. Does anyone know: - The syntax I need to actually get this to work? i.e. to get the vbscript to run automatically on page load, AND to do the page include? - Or, is there a better way to go about this? (perhaps by doing some coding in C#) Note: I am experienced in C#; however, I haven't done any vbscript since the days of ASP classic, so my knowledge there is out of date.

• Is it wrong to not support IE or older browsers? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: So now Google has said no to old browsers when can the rest of us follow suit? Normally a SO browser but this question doesn't fit there, hopefully it fits here. I just want to ask from web designers' point of view if it's wrong to not care about supporting Internet Explorer or older browsers. The site I'm designing looks great in all browsers except IE9-. There are certain things that IE doesn't support or behave like other browsers; AJAX, JQuery, webkit stuff, some CSS styles, drop-and-drop files from OS etc etc, but it all works great in Safari, FireFox, Chrome etc. Should I be that concerned? I know there are several people that use IE, but it's limitations have just been causing me more work by having to come up with workarounds. From what I've read, many of the issues I've been having should be solved with IE10, but not everybody keeps up to date. I know of several people who are still using IE6! Again, I'm hoping this is the right place to ask a question like this, and if not, please point me to the right stack exchange site instead of just downvoting me. Thanks!

• How do I fix the Dash search not being able to find "additional drivers" nor "update"?

  I am a fairly new user of Ubuntu, and currently have two 12.04 installations, one of which seems to work ok but I have two problems. The problem I'm asking about in this question, is that the Dash search seems unable to find things, such as "additional drivers" or "update". On my working machine, searching for "additional drivers" there finds an icon for the driver program, but on the problem machine, it gives "Sorry, there is nothing that matches your search." Dash also only shows sections for Recent Files, and Downloads, on that machine. The account I'm running is an admin account. This installation also has a stuck Ubuntu Software Center (it loads and hangs) as in threads like this one. I don't think I've done very much to this computer that could cause a problem. I installed g++ and Wt to do some programming. The biggest change I can remember is uninstalling the newfangled scrollbars with "sudo apt-get remove liboverlay-scrollbar3-0.2-0", but re-installing that module seems to have no effect on these issues. Anyone have any ideas? Both machines have been updated with all recommended updates and say they are up to date.

  I'm using this code (which I sourced online) to display date archives in a WordPress theme. It extracts the month and year info, plus post_count, and displays the $month-post_count as expected. • What do you consider standard job perks? [closed]

  What does a company need to offer you (apart from a fat pay cheque) for you to work for them? I am aware of this question, which is from an employer's perspective. I am interested in your views as employees. To get the discussion started, here is a list off the top of my head (not in any particular order): High-end computer with a huge screen or two. The best software tool money can buy as per Joel's test). That isn't too much to ask given many of the best tools are free (think git). Flexibility is a bonus- if a particular platform/ piece of software is not absolutely required, I would like to pick my OS and IDE. A quality chair Quiet workspace. Open plan is fine as long as there are meeting rooms so that there is no constant chatter going on around me. Spacious workspace. I would rather have more than three inches between my mouse and the person next to me's keyboard. Food and drink at work. Many companies these days have fruit baskets, biscuits, etc available to their employees, some even offer free lunch. Education. If my employer wants my skills to stay up-to-date, they should at the very least understand I need time to learn. If they want to pay for my books and conference registration fees, I am more than happy to accept. Other options include organizing internal knowledge exchange days or inviting speakers from outside. Flexible hours/ option to work from home is a bonus

• preventing changes to a cell in google spreadsheet [migrated]

  I want to prevent changes to column K in google spreadsheet. Whatever value is there, I do not want it changed. I do not like the protection feature as it makes what I consider an ugly display. My code. Unfortunately, it does absolutely nothing. The intent was to take whatever the current value is in the cell, save it, and then write it back on exit of the cell instead of saving whatever changes might have been made to the cell. The cell will either be blank to start, or will already have been modified to contain a date & time. • NSURLSession and amazon S3 uploads

  I have an app which is currently uploading images to amazon S3. I have been trying to switch it from using NSURLConnection to NSURLSession so that the uploads can continue while the app is in the background! I seem to be hitting a bit of an issue. The NSURLRequest is created and passed to the NSURLSession but amazon sends back a 403 - forbidden response, if I pass the same request to a NSURLConnection it uploads the file perfectly. • Loop through values and display in a pdf file

  Hello all! i have written the following code: As you can see there is a for loop to go through some values and display them in the generated pdf. The problem is that all the values are being written at the same place. I have tried to insert a new line but it does not seem to work. Can anyone suggest me how i can do it? • Is Inheritance in Struts2 Model-Driven Action possible?

  Hello, I have a Model-Driven Struts2 action that provides correct JSON response. When I re-structure the action I get an empty JSON response back. Has anyone got inheritance working with Struts2 Model-Driven actions? Ive tried explicitly setting include properties in struts config: <result name="json" type="json"> <param name="includeProperties"> jsonResponse </param> </result> Code for all actions below - not actual code in use - I have edited and stripped down for clarity.   I recently built a simple web-app deployed over Tomcat. The app uses pretty standard session based security where a user who has logged in is given a session. Sessions work fine in Firefox and Chrome, but require the use of jsessionid in the URL for IE (tested 7 & 8), set to medium privacy. In IE 8, I tried to override cookie handling, setting "Allow all 3rd party cookies" and "Allow all session cookies"- no dice. However, when I run Tomcat on my local machine, IE accepts the cookie, and sessions work just fine. And now, for the HTTP headers. • AWT Textfield behaves weird with MicroSoft JVM

  Hi, I am facing a weird problem when using MicroSoft JVM to run my Applet. I have an AWT panel with 4 textfields which is added to a dialog box. Everything goes fine until I enter a decimal value into the textfield and close the dialog box. When i reopen the dialog box the textfield inside the panel with all the decimal digits (entered in the previous step) behaves weird. The decimal values along with the WHITE area inside the textfield moves to the left and hides the digits. When I click inside the textfield it becomes normal. The Panel earlier had gridlayout and I even tried changing it to gridbaylayout and still the problem persist. NOTE: All Development are pertained to JRE1.1 to compatibility with MS JVM If any can help me with this it would be a great help. • Using DateTime in a SqlParameter for Stored Procedure, format error

  I'm trying to call a stored procedure (on a SQL 2005 server) from C#, .NET 2.0 using DateTime as a value to a SqlParameter. The SQL type in the stored procedure is 'datetime'. Executing the sproc from SQL Management Studio works fine. But everytime I call it from C# I get an error about the date format. When I run SQL Profiler to watch the calls, I then copy paste the exec call to see whats going on. These are my observations and notes about what I've attempted: 1) If I pass the DateTime in directly as a DateTime or converted to SqlDateTime, the field is surrounding by a PAIR of single quotes, such as @Date_Of_Birth=N''1/8/2009 8:06:17 PM'' 2) If I pass the DateTime in as a string, I only get the single quotes 3) Using SqlDateTime.ToSqlString() does not result in a UTC formatted datetime string (even after converting to universal time) 4) Using DateTime.ToString() does not result in a UTC formatted datetime string. 5) Manually setting the DbType for the SqlParameter to DateTime does not change the above observations. So, my questions then, is how on earth do I get C# to pass the properly formatted time in the SqlParameter? Surely this is a common use case, why is it so difficult to get working? Update and Success First and foremost, thank you everyone for the answers. I post this for the sake of completeness and accuracy on SO - because I certainly do not do it for my pride... I had copy/pasted the code above after the request from below. I trimmed things here and there to be concise. Turns out my problem was in the code I left out, which I'm sure any one of you would have spotted in an instant. I had wrapped my sproc calls inside a transaction. Turns out that I was simply not doing transaction.Commit()!!!!! I'm ashamed to say it, but there you have it. I still don't know what's going on with the syntax I get back from the profiler. A coworker watched with his own instance of the profiler from his computer, and it returned proper syntax. Watching the very SAME executions from my profiler showed the incorrect syntax. It acted as a red-herring, making me believe there was a query syntax problem instead of the much more simple and true answer, which was that I need to commit the transaction! I marked an answer below as correct, and threw in some up-votes on others because they did, after all, answer the question, even if they didn't fix my specific (brain lapse) issue.   EDIT: Added some of the output of the mvn -X -e commands at the end My company is developing a GWT application. We've been using maven 2 and GWT 1.7 successfully for quite a while. We recently decided to upgrade to GWT 2.0. We've already updated the eclipse project and we are able to successfully run the application in dev-mode. We are struggling to get the application built using maven though. I'm hoping somebody can tell me what I'm doing wrong here since I'm running out of time on this. It's finding the correct sourceDirectory. That folders has a 'com' folder within which ultimately is the source of the application organized in folders as per the package structure.

• Does Apache ever give incorrect "out of threads" errors?

  Lately our Apache web server has been giving us this error multiple times per day: [Tue Apr 06 01:07:10 2010] [error] Server ran out of threads to serve requests. Consider raising the ThreadsPerChild setting We raised our ThreadsPerChild setting from 50 to 100, but we still get the error. Our access logs indicate that these errors never even happen at periods of high load. For example, here's an excerpt from our access log (ip addresses and some urls are edited for privacy). Since the Apache server runs as a separate process and the database doesn't record any problems when this error occurs, I'm doubtful that Oracle is the problem. Unfortunately, the errors are freaking out our sysadmins, who are inclined to blame any and all problems which occur with the server on this error. Is this a known bug in Apache that I simply haven't been able to find any reference to through Google?

• If record exists in database, UPDATE a single column

  I have a bulk uploading object in place that is being used to bulk upload roughly 25-40 image files at a time. Each image is about 100-150 kb in size. During the upload, I've created a for each loop that takes the file name of the image (minus the file extension) to write it into a column named "sku". Also, for each file being uploaded, the date is recorded to a column named DateUpdated, as well as some image path data. This is because these product images are always being revised and improved. For each new/improved image, the file name and extension will remain the same - so that when image 321-54321.jpg was first uploaded to the server, the new/improved version of that image will still have the image file name as 321-54321.jpg. I can't say for sure if the file sizes will remain in the 100-150KB range. I'll assume that the image file size will grow eventually. When images get uploaded (again), there of course will be an existing record in the database for that image. What is the best way to: Check the database for the existing record (stored procedure or SqlDataReader or create a DataSet ...?) Then if record exists, simply UPDATE that record so that the DateUpdated column gets today's date. If no record exists, do the INSERT of the record as normal. Things to consider: If the record exists, we'll let the actual image be uploaded. It will simply overwrite the existing image so that the new version gets displayed on the web. We're using SQL Server 2000 on hosted environment (DiscountAsp). I'm programming in C#. The uploading process will be used by about 2 managers a few times a month (each) - which to me is not a allot of usage. Although I'm a jr. developer, I'm guessing that a stored procedure would be the way to go. Just seems more efficient - to do this record check away from the for each loop... but not sure. I'd need extra help writing a sproc, since I don't have too much experience with them. Thank everyone...

  Hi, I've been banging my head around with a @ViewScoped managed-bean. I'm using primeface's "schedule" component in order to display some events. When the user clicks on a specific button a method in the viewscoped bean is called using ajax but every time I get a "java.io.NotSerializableException", if I change the managed-bean scope to request the problem dissapears.
