• LibreOffice hangs everytime I click into it

  I've searched askubuntu for a solution but couldn't find anything helpful for me. I installed the latest version of ubuntu (13.10; 64-bit) yesterday (so I'm relatively new and unexperienced about it) and some programs as well. Today I wanted to try the LibreOffice package which comes with ubuntu by default. So I first started LO Impress, it showed me the default slide where it says something like "Add your title/text here" (I don't know exactly, I'm using my system in German). As soon as i clicked on this text, my entire system didn't react, I couldn't even click the stuff in the upper right corner (where the date, shutdown functions etc. are), nor the items on the launcher bar on the left. After 10 seconds or so, everything seemed to work properly again. But when I clicked into the LO Impress again, the same procedure as described happened again (cmpletely stuck for about 10 sec). Anybody got a solution for this? If you need more information, just tell me. Thanks in advance!

• Cannot login in account with encrypted home after update from 11.04 to 11.10

  After upgrading from ubuntu 11.04 to 10.10 I cannot access my encrypted home partition anymore. I can login, however all data stays encrypted. ecryptfs-mount-private gives: ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly Any idea how to fix this? Update I have several kernels installed (after the upgrade my menu.lst looks like this: http://paste.org/pastebin/view/35591) the problem is the same for all kernels.   As part of our current project the Build Management team asked for a solution to undeploy multiple composites at one time. Of course you have the “Undeploy All from This Partition” menu option in Enterprise Manager but since we have a lot of deployments every day the guys wanted to have a script solution. It is even more important for the nightly deployments on our continuous integration environment – strange, we couldn’t find anybody who wants to do the undeployment via Enterprise Manager manually every night ;-) However with WLST or ANT the SOA Suite comes with two options to undeploy composites via script. In this article I’d like to explain you both ways. Undeployment with WLST You can test the steps below on Oracle's Pre-built Virtual Machine for SOA Suite and BPM Suite 11g. • Referrer Strings

  I'm not exactly sure how to ask this, but here I go. I work for a company that provides IT services. Our main costumer has a website developed by WebCompany.com, and I act as a maintainer/middle-man for this website for our customer. What's happening is that on the front page there is a drop-down-menu with links. One link goes to a third party website - ThirdParty.com. This third party website automatically logs you in based on your IP or your referrer string. Homepage ThirdParty.com Logged in via IP or referrer string. What's happening... is Website.com is passing along inconsistent referrer strings. I've asked them to look into it and they say it's not their fault, referrer strings are handled at the browser. ThirdParty.com is actually nice enough to have IP and referrer string listed on the front page for users not logged in. So... how can I trace the referrer string so that I can figure out why http://Website.com's front page link to ThirdParty.com is showing a referrer as "None" or "Thirdparty.com" instead of "ThirdParty.com"? Their website is build in PHP. Can you force all links on a website to list "referrer" as "http://website.com/"? instead of "http://website.com/portal/1" or "http://website.com/page3"?

• How can I downgrade a system that accidentally had backports installed?

  I installed a fresh Ubuntu system. Somehow - possibly through my own error - the backports repository got enabled. Then I did several upgrades. I noticed that this happened when networking suddenly stopped working, "Network Settings" now has an "(alpha)" in the title bar, "System Settings" ? "Network" now displays an error dialog saying "The system network services are not compatible with this version". Now, I've disabled the backports repository, and I'd like to restore my system to its previously-functional state. My question is twofold: How do I determine which packages were installed from backports? Can I automatically re-install all those packages (and purge their configuration) to get back to a sensible state? If the answer to 2 is "no" I can probably manually purge some things and reinstall, but it would be nice to have it handled automatically. Update: It wasn't an update that broke the network; it was apt-get install indicator-network, which installed something called "connman" and removed network-manager and network-manager-gnome. Nevertheless I am leaving the question up, since I am still interested in how I can purge packages from a particular source after accidentally adding that source, and how I can determine which packages were installed from where.

• problems with installation of ubuntu 12.04 (64 and 32 bits)

  I am a latinoamerican so.. sorry for my english I am trying to install ubuntu on my new pc but I have serious problems. When I put the installation cd and it runs, everything goes fine until that "window" when the user have to decide if want to try ubuntu or install it on the machine.. well that "window" apears in blank, and I see that my mouse and my keyboard turn really slowly and I can't do anything I have to shut it down by pressing power botton. The specification of my pc are this Gigabyte ex58 ud7 i7 950 wester digital caviar black 6gb memory corsair evga gtx580 Please i really neeed to install ubuntu or another linux distrubution, i am usign de sismic unix program on my laptop and well. it burns when i program a script! help! please :) what can i do..? what i have to download? i am not a pro in linux so please :( be pattient with me when it starts to load the achieve ubuntu environment to enter a menu with a graphical environment but I managed to get something sturdy and gave him to try ubuntu, started to load but freezes on the sign of ubuntu with red spots and only shows me the pointer not more ..... any other option? ps: had previously tried to install the alternate version of ubuntu not having success: S

• computer shows up twice, connection unknown

  added two computers to Ubuntu One. One machine is windows. The windows version seems to work fine, and I started syncing a folder by placing it into the Ubuntu One folder. All files and folders are visible when I go to my account online. On Ubuntu machine. I selected to sync the Download folder. Shortly thereafter, I realized that one folder exceeded my storage max. I tried to un-sync the folder, but Ubuntu One and the Stop Syncing This Folder were not visible in the menu. Per Ubuntu instructions, I removed my Ubuntu computer from the list of syncing computers. Per Ubuntu instructions, I re-added the Ubuntu computer. However, I find that two computers by the same name are added on both the desktop app and on the web. Plus, I the connection is "unknown." I have removed and re-added the computer several times with the same results. In all cases, I remove the computers using the Ubuntu One desktop app, then removing them from my account on the web, removing the Ubuntu One password, and restart the Ubuntu One app. Problem remains. • Will BIOS boot mode Ubuntu install be able to boot when firmware "Fast Boot" is "Ultra Fast"?

  I have an AsRock mainboard with UEFI BIOS P1.50 02/14/2014. The firmware "Fast Boot" option is set to "Fast", Boot Option #1 is set to "AHCI P4: OCZ-VERT...": this is BIOS not UEFI boot. This boot disk has an MBR partitioning scheme (# parted -l | grep Partition\ Table:). Therefore Ubuntu 14.04 is installed in BIOS/CMS (Grub-PC) mode. The Ubuntu boot process ends in a text console (no GUI). There is no external graphics card in use. The stock Ubuntu kernel is replaced with Ubuntu supplied mainline 3.16.0-031600rc6-generic. dmesg outputs lines containing BIOS, like: SMBIOS 2.7 present Calgary: detecting Calgary via BIOS EBDA area Calgary: Unable to locate Rio Grande table in EBDA - bailing! [Firmware Bug]: ACPI: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found The ASRock BIOS it selves display this help text for "Ultra Fast - Fast Boot": Ultra Fast mode is only supported by Windows 8 and the VBIOS must support UEFI GOP if you are using an external graphics card. Please notice that Ultra Fast mode will boot so fast that the only way to enter this UEFI Setup Utility is to Clear CMOS or run the Restart to UEFI utility in Windows. Assumptions: I suspect after changing UEFI setting "Fast Boot" to "Ultra Fast" that the machine will no longer boot into Ubuntu's console. I expect when first exchanging "Grub-pc" with "Grub-efi", that the machine will still be able to boot to a grub menu (thus allowing to change the "Fast Boot" setting back to "Fast" without clearing CMOS). Are these two "Fast Boot" assumptions correct, and/or, may I expect Ubuntu 14.04 running mainline kernel 3.16rc6 and Grub-efi to still boot to console after enabling UEFI Ultra Fast Boot?

• Why doesn't my grub background show?

  I've tried to change resolution, colors and background image for my grub menu, but I get no background (well, just a black one, no image).... What am I doing wrong? • Cannot see boot options after editing grub background

  After solving this problem I managed to get myself into truble again out of nothing by trying to change the display of the dual boot option page in Boot Customizer. I have changed the background, the fonts size (I have increased them) and font style (I have chosen UnDotum). But Boot Customizer gave me an error (I mean a message that the application was closed unexpectedly or smth). I have restarted BootCustomizer and the settings were there. When I rebooted, instead of the normal boot options list, just the background image that I had selected and nothing else. I used Boot Repair to repair grub, it says it did it successfully, but I still get the background image when I try to boot. Any ideas? (Could it be the matter that I chose UnDotum font style? That was installed in Lubuntu - but how could it be accessible in displaying boot options?) • Is it OK to use dynamic typing to reduce the amount of variables in scope?

  Often, when I am initializing something I have to use a temporary variable, for example: file_str = "path/to/file" file_file = open(file) or regexp_parts = ['foo', 'bar'] regexp = new RegExp( regexp_parts.join('|') ) However, I like to reduce the scope my variables to the smallest scope possible so there is less places where they can be (mis-)used. For example, I try to use for(var i ...) in C++ so the loop variable is confined to the loop body. In these initialization cases, if I am using a dynamic language, I am then often tempted to reuse the same variable in order to prevent the initial (and now useless) value from being used latter in the function. file = "path/to/file" file = open(file) regexp = ['...', '...'] regexp = new RegExp( regexp.join('|') ) The idea is that by reducing the number of variables in scope I reduce the chances to misuse them. However this sometimes makes the variable names look a little weird, as in the first example, where "file" refers to a "filename". I think perhaps this would be a non issue if I could use non-nested scopes begin scope1 filename = ... begin scope2 file = open(filename) end scope1 //use file here //can't use filename on accident end scope2 but I can't think of any programming language that supports this. • Mobile App Notifications in the Enterprise Space: UX Considerations

  Here is a really super website of UX patterns for Android: Android Patterns. I was particularly interested in the event-driven notification patterns (aka status bar notifications to developers). Android - unlike iOS (i.e., the iPhone) - offers a superior centralized notifications system for users.   (Figure copyright Android Patterns)   Research in the enterprise applications space shows how users on-the-go, prefer this approach, as: Users can manage their notification alerts centrally, across all media, apps and for device activity, and decide the order in which to deal with them, and when. Notifications, unlike messages in a dialog or information message in the UI, do not block a task flow (and we need to keep task completion to under three minutes). See the Anti-Patterns slideshare presentation on this blocking point too. These notifications must never interrupt a task flow by launching an activity from the background. Instead, the user can launch an activity from the notification. What users do need is the ability to filter this centralized approach, and to personalize the experience of which notifications are added, what the reminder is, ability to turn off, and so on. A related point concerning notifications is when used to provide users with a record of actions then you can lighten up on lengthy confirmation messages that pop up (toasts in the Android world) used when transactions or actions are sent for processing or into a workflow. Pretty much all the confirmation needs to say is the action is successful along with key data such as dollar amount, customer name, or whatever. I am a user of Android (Nexus S), BlackBerry (Curve), and iOS devices (iPhone 3GS and 4). In my opinion, the best notifications user experience for the enterprise user is offered by Android. Blackberry is good, but not as polished and way clunkier than Android’s. What you get on the iPhone, out of the box, is useless in the enterprise. • What is the best type of c# timer to use with an Unity game that uses many timers simultaneously?

  I am developing a stand-alone 3d game in Unity that will have anywhere from 1 to 200 timers running simultaneously. For this game timer durations will range from 5 minutes to 4 days. There will not be any countdown displays or any UI for the timers. An object will be selected, a menu choice will then be selected, and the timer will start. Several events will occur at different intervals during the duration of the timer. The events will be confined to changing the material of the selected object, and calling a 1 second sound effect like a chime or a bell. If the user wants to save or end the game before all the timers are done, the start of the still running timers is to be saved to an XML file such that when the game is started again, any still running timers will have a calculation done to see if the timer is then done, where the game will change the materials appropriately. I am still trying to figure out what type of timer to use, and see also if there are any suggestions for saving and calculating times over several days. What class(es) of timers should I use? Are there any special issues I should look out for in terms of performance?

• 12.04, nvidia-settings makes one of my dual monitors grey and useless, disables network

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Precise Pangolin, with a PNY GTS 250 1GB video card and a monitor plugged into each of the DVI ports. I'm using the proprietary drivers (post-release updates). If I set anything to do with Separate X Screens up in nvidia-settings (and write it to xorg.conf and reboot), my second monitor has a grey background, no menu bar, no ability to have a window on it, the second monitor doesn't get picked up in a screneshot, and if I move my mouse cursor to it it's an ugly black X. Plus, my network is unable to connect to anything. If I subsequently delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reboot, everything goes back to working, albeit with a single monitor activated. If I set anything to do with TwinView up in nvidia-settings, my second monitor starts working, but it isn't seen as a second monitor by Ubuntu, so I can't apply color calibration to it separately. Plus, my mouse gets "caught" between the monitors every time I try to move my cursor between the two. What gives? If it helps, this is the xorg.conf that nvidia-settings generates for Separate X Screens.

• How can I add a custom item to the Sound Indicator (and make it clickable more than once)?

  The original question One of the strength of Unity are the various standardized indicators. I want to customize the sound indicator with an additional menu entry that runs a small shell script. I'm not afraid of a little Python code and I hope someone can point me to the right subroutine in the right file. I suspect that will be fairly easy but all the indicators are just so bloated that I can't look through their code in a reasonable time. Any help is appreciated. I know it is possible as the marvelous Skype-Wrapper does it. Edit 2 - Now a dirty DBus hack The one click problem from one edit before has now turned into a DBus problem. Basically we have to tell the sound indicator that our bogus player has terminated now. • Why don't I have a loop error with these redirects?

  I know this may seem a bit of a question in reverse, but I actually don't seem to have a problem I just want to make sure before I proceed. I have 2 domains domain1.com and domain2.com and a directory my_directory at domain2.com. I have domain2.com setup as an "add on domain" in the cpanel account of domain1.com so that when I go to domain2.com I am taken to domain1.com/my_directory but the browser shows domain2.com in the addressbar so it looks and acts like and is a separate site. However when people browse to domain1.com/directory I want the address bar to show domain2.com not domain1.com/directory. So I put a redirect in the htaccess file to redirect domain1.com/directory to domain2.com and it works perfectly, but I think it shouldnt and I'm worried I've done something wrong. My question is this: domain2.com was already redirected to domain1.com/directory in the first place (I see the redirect in my cpanel under addon domains) so by adding the second redirect in the htaccess file I should be creating a loop! Could somebody please set my mind at rest and show me why not?

• proxychained browser unable to open files

  Ubuntu 10.10, Midori 0.3.2 browser (same problem with Epiphany 2.30.2, Chrome 11.0.686.1 dev; haven't tried with Firefox as yet) Proxychains-3.1 installed, working fine. Here is the deal: when NOT proxychained, Midori or Epiphany can download and open a file (e.g. PDFs from a Google search) in Evince without problem. But when proxychained, neither browser can open PDF files. The message is, "file xxx downloaded". Then it tries to open the file, an indication appears in the status bar, the turning wheel appears, and then nothing. Evince doesn't open. Whats going on here? In both cases (with and without proxychains) files are downloaded to the /tmp folder. They have the same file permissions and ownership. Whats different when proxychained? Why can't the files be opened and why are there no error messages or notifications. Why the silent failure? I don't want to use FF or Chrome. Chrome does not follow my GTK2 customizations and FF is just too resource heavy. Please help.

• Dell Alps Touchpad not working

  I have a Dell 17R SE with Ubuntu 13.04. The touchpad is recognized as PS/2 mouse out of the box, giving just normal touchpad behaviour, but no tap to click, no scrolling, etc. Most answers related to that issue suggest trying an ALPS driver from dahetral.com: http://www.dahetral.com/public-download For installing I followed the steps on this page: https://www.linuxwind.org/html/dell-touchpad-driver-for-ubuntu-13-04.html Now my xinput looks like this: Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)] ? ? PS/2 Mouse id=13 [slave pointer (2)] ? ? AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint id=14 [slave pointer (2)] ? ? Logitech Bluetooth Mouse M555b id=16 [slave pointer (2)] My touchpad isn't working at all now, just the two hardware buttons for left and right mouse buttons work. Interestingly also the tap to click functions works, but only in the address bar of nautilus, nowhere (!) else. What can I do? I would even switch back to initial state, where at least the basic touchpad functionality worked, i I knew, how to get there.

  Why do some new technologies cause ripples and reactionary backlash in society but others slip into our daily lives almost entirely uncontested? It turns out there’s a rather specific combination of things the new technology must do to upset the public. At Wired they highlight the work of Genevieve Bell and her studies of how society reacts to new technology: Genevieve Bell believes she’s cracked this puzzle. Bell, director of interaction and experience research at Intel, has long studied how everyday people incorporate new tech into their lives. In a 2011 interview with The Wall Street Journal‘s Tech Europe blog, she outlined an interesting argument: To provoke moral panic, a technology must satisfy three rules. • Does TDD's "Obvious Implementation" mean code first, test after?

  My friend and I are relatively new TDD and have a dispute about the "Obvious Implementation" technique (from "TDD By Example" by Kent Beck). My friend says it means that if the implementation is obvious, you should go ahead and write it - before any test for that new behavior. And indeed the book says: How do you implement simple operations? Just implement them. Also: Sometimes you are sure you know how to implement an operation. Go ahead. I think what the author means is you should test first, and then "just implement" it - as opposed to the "Fake It ('Till You Make It)" and other techniques, which require smaller steps in the implementation stage. Also after these quotes the author talks about getting "red bars" (failing tests) when doing "Obvious Implementation" - how can you get a red bar without a test?. Yet I couldn't find any quote from the book saying "obvious" still means test first. What do you think? Should we test first or after when the implementation is "obvious" (according to TDD, of course)? Do you know a book or blog post saying just that?

• Can no longer boot with rEFIt and Grub on early 2006 MacBook Pro

  I don't know what happened to cause this. I have Snow Leopard, Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and Windows XP SP3 on my early 2006 MacBook Pro. It is a Core Duo unit, NOT Core 2 Duo, so it is 32-bit only - Model Identifier MacBookPro1,1. I use rEFIt 0.14 for my boot menu. For some reason neither XP nor Ubuntu would boot anymore. I'd just get a black screen with a rapidly flashing underscore in the top-left corner. Having both those OSes failing to boot suggested a problem with the boot loader in my MBR. The rEFIT partition tool verified that my MBR partitions were still synced with my GPT partitions, so I rewrote my MBR partition table with fdisk while booted from Parted Magic: # fdisk /dev/sda (fdisk warns about the disk having a GPT. I press on anyway.) p (Print the existing partition table to make sure it's OK.) w (Write the old partition table back to disk. This also writes a new MBR boot loader.) After this XP would boot but Ubuntu would not, with the same symptom. Now I used update-grub while chrooted into Ubuntu from Parted Magic: # mount /dev/sda3 /mnt # mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev # mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys # mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc # chroot /mnt Chroot issues some warnings about not being able to identify some group IDs. I don't know why that happens, or whether it is a problem. At this point while I am still booted off of Parted Magic's kernel, I am running from Natty's filesystem. # update-grub Update-grub detects each of my operating systems then claims to complete successfully, but still won't boot. I asked this same question over at rEFIt's Sourceforge support forum but there have been no replies yet. I also Googled quite a bit, and see many who have the same black screen problem, but none of their situations seem quite like mine. Thanks for any help you can give me. -- Don Quixote
