• Why does 1GBit card have output limited to 80 MiB ?

  I'm trying to utilize maximal bandwidth provided by my 1GiB network card, but it's always limited to 80MiB (real megabytes). What can be the reason? • How do I keep the URL in the address bar when stopping page load in Firefox

  Suppose I am visiting a page in Firefox and decide to go somewhere else and type the new URL manually into the address field, but the page fails to load, either because it times out, or because I hit Escape. Then Firefox removes my laboriously entered URL and replaces it with the URL of the current page. This is outrageous! I am pretty sure Firefox has changed this behavior lately, because this was one of the reasons I chose Firefox over IE back in the day. How can I turn off this annoying behavior? • Ubuntu 12.04 full iphone backup

  I am using ubuntu 12.04 and have an iPhone 5 using iOS 6.0.2. My question is how can I do a full backup on ubuntu. Most questions I have seen on this are related to peoples music libraries etc how ever this is of little importance to me. What I want to be able to do is a complete (photos,contacts, OS etc) image backup (and restore if required). So far I have looked up libimobiledevice and this seems to be just that a API. Other suggestions are about Rhythmbox for music etc but this is not of huge importance to me. Finally the suggestion is for using Itune and some combination of Wine or Playforlinux. But even if you get iTunes working iPhone access is limited. Surely someone must have the same problem and found a solution. J

• Disable PXE progamatically in parallels?

  I'm running Parallels 4.0 on Mac OS X 10.5.8. I'm trying to create a bunch of Virtual Machines from the commandline, using the prlctl tool, like so: $ prlctl create test1 -o linux -d centos $ prlctl set test1 --device-del cdrom0 $ prlctl start test1 Now, each time I start a new VM, the VM spends time waiting for a PXE boot. I'd like to turn this off. Can I disable PXE requests using Parallels or a Parallels commandline tool? Or, can I set the boot order of a VM from the commandline?

• Viewing the full Skype chat history

  I have Skype 2.8 on Mac OS X 10.5.8. Under the the chat menu is an option called "Recent Chats". This allows me to see logs of recent chats, but not of older ones. I know the older ones are stored because they are in ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/username/chatmsg256.dbb. This file when put in a text editor has text chat information from all my previous Skype chats. It is however stored in an unknown file format that I do not know how to parse. Does Skype have a built-in log viewer (like Adium's) that I can use to access these older logs?

• Ubuntu installer does not show drives

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Inspiron laptio, but the installer does not show any drives. My system has a 1TB SATA drive and a 32GB SSD. As far as I can figure, the boot files are kept on the SSD for fast startup (for Windows). During Win7 installation, I had to manually load drivers for RAID controller to see all available drives. I have some questions regarding this configuration: I think it is a raid configuration.Please correct me if I am wrong. I read that, mirroring is nothing but raid-1 configuration. All my software and OS is in this drive. I want my software to be in a separate drive, but I am not sure if I can create a separate drive from the above mentioned c drive. I want to know: a. • Motherboard max memory supported

  I have an Intel DG965RY motherboard and its specification says it supports 8GB with 533 or 667Mhz RAM sticks and only 4GB with 800Mhz RAM sticks. I am running a 64bit OS. I earlier had 2 X 1GB sticks (800Mhz), so I bought 2 X 2GB sticks (800Mhz) and I underclocked them in the settings to run at 667Mhz. Shouldn't it support all 6GB RAM now? It would be a bummer if I will specifically need 667Mhz sticks thinking that at the worst they will underclock and then run at 667Mhz. I tried this because I saw someone posted at some forum that he put in 4GB+ of RAM in the same board @ 800Mhz and the system uses it all. In my case (On Ubuntu), it only shows 3.2GB as of now (link to Question) so needed to confirm if this is a hardware limitation.

• SQL 2008 R2: Data\Log partions

  I have a SQL Server setup that a previous IT person set up with a 2TB data partition and a 1TB log partition. The OS partition is 244GB and SQL is installed on a separate 1TB partition. We have an additional 8TB of storage that I would like the new IT staff to bring on line. He wants to create 4 new 2TB data partition. I see this as confusing. Can't we just backup the current data partition, blow it away, and create a new 10TB data partition I'm responsible for administering the data on the server but am not allowed to do the setup myself. This is a GIS server running ArcGIS Server with around 60 geodatabases ranging from 20BG to a couple that may grow to over a TB. So, 5-2TB data partitions or 1-10TB partition. Thanks for the advice.

• Unix: Sync directory with FTP or SFTP directory

  I have a website on my local computer running Mac OS X. I am wondering if there is any built-in command that I can run in the Terminal that will upload that website to my webserver either through FTP or, if possible, SFTP. Installing new commands through MacPorts is also a possibility. A big bonus would be that it only uploaded the files that needs to be updated and not everything else. It would also be nice if I can tell it to delete the files on the server that no longer exists locally once in a while. Any good tips?

  My client utilizes Plesk (9.X) for Server Management. We're implementing a custom backup solution, which should include a complete restorable representation of the actual Plesk configuration (Emails, Domains, etc.). We have full access, since it is a dedicated server resembling these steps: Plesk offers some backups, but they do not include the actual content of the (sub-)domains. Browsing the docs and the internet, I haven't found much ideas on that problem. Our target is to have a disaster recovery scenario: Reinstall a clean OS (Ubuntu) from scratch. Install MySQL/PHP and dependencies (since this runs the app) Install a bare plesk Restore all domains + plesk configuration from an archive Continue operations ... Now steps 1, 2, 3 and 5 are trivial. But what are the best practices for step 4? • Scheduled task username changed

  I posted this originally on stack overflow where I was told I should ask it here: Hi, I created a user on our exchange server, but later changed the username. Now, when I create a scheduled task for that user, and change it's settings (run only when logged on), the username is automatically changed back to the old username. What's causing this and how do I make sure the correct, new username is used for the task (otherwise it won't run), security settings are okay. I did already log in with a different user to delete the profile on the computer and tried again with this user to no avail. The OS is windows xp, the exchange server is on windows server 2003. • Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE Error unmet dependencies

  I am working on Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE as my current project. I am finding it difficult to install any new packages on this OS. For example, I need to install OpenCv package for qt webcam application, but every time it gives unmet dependencies error.And when i try to install dependencies it again show some more dependencies and so on and forms a circular loops. for example: sudo apt-get install libcv-dev .. .... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libcv-dev: Depends: libhighgui-dev (=1.0.0-6.2ubuntu1) but it is not going to installed. E: Broken packages Then I try to install libhighgui-dev as follow: sudo appt-get install libhighgui-dev .. ... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libhighgui-dev: Depends: libgtk2.0-dev but it is not going to installed E: Broken packages And this goes on never ending. Please suggest me something, as i have googled a lot and did not found any help. It may be , i m missing some primary packages to be installed.But how to find it? • Coda-like experience for Ubuntu

  I'm a web developer who's going to transition from using Mac OS X to Ubuntu. I've been using Coda for some time, only because it makes web development easy. I know a full fledged app isn't available for Linux, but would like to know about apps that specialize in the same tasks that Coda offers. I plan on switching to Vim for code editing, I'm extremely proficient and will install the Janus plugin and be good to go for editing code. One thing that makes editing on Coda so amazing is its extremely good at SFTP, you can drag and drop files and/or folders from your local drive to the server. Also, you can edit code directly on the server. The problem here, is that using Vim I don't know of a way to edit code on a remote server, while using my own Vim settings and plugins. To solve this, I would like to know of a good SFTP client OR a good SFTP CLI. A CLI that could synchronize your files after a file has been modified would be perfect, but not necessary. Now, one of the biggest and best features of Coda is its ability to view your databases. You get to create a database, create tables, add stuff, delete stuff and view the contents of the table (all this without writing a single SQL statement). I will admit that databases are my weak point, but is a very important part of my job. If there is a tool that specializes in databases would be perfect. I wouldn't prefer to use the command line for database stuff, but if there is a CLI for databases that I'm missing could potentially be useful. So I guess I'm asking for two things. A tool that makes databases easier to visualize and a tool that assists in pushing my local code to a server.

• I don't know how to connect to the internet

  I'm having some trouble finding an answer to my problem. I have a dell desktop (studio hybrid) and i have windows vista on it. The internet on windows vista works great, no problem. But now i downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and I'm having problems. I can't find how to connect to my wireless network, when i click the network icon, it shows a list of things but I can only click 'enable wireless network' or something like that and 'edit connections'. But in this list it also says ( in a grey collor and i can't click it ) : 'No wireless connection, device not ready (firmware missing)" Or something like that. Now i tried several things i read on the internet (using my vista OS cause i can't use ubuntu for the internet, which is really enoying). But none of them helped me. I would like someone to tell me what my problem is or what information I have to give you to get an answer. So tell me if i have to edit a connection, or tell me how i have to get the wireless connection to work and to repair the 'firmware missing problem'. I hope someone can/is willing to help me. Bye

• Raid Shows Up as Multiple Drives - Can't Mount

  I have a single hard drive that the OS is installed on and I have Sil raid card installed with two matching 500GB hdds set up in Raid 0 and formatted- they're completely empty. For whatever reason they are showing up as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc and not as a single hard drive. I used fdisk to format both raid drives as Linux raid auto (fd) but I cannot mount either device and dmraid doesn't seem to want to work, what step am I missing? • SCSI vs SATA? Is SCSI "actually" better?

  Well, I was talking with a guy about servers the other day. I was a bit shocked whenever I asked him if there was any significant difference between SCSI and SATA and why he always uses SCSI. (note, I'm not sure if by SCSI he meant SAS) He told me that SCSI is always faster and that the drives are always more reliable.. I mean, this seems like a bold statement. He told me something about how SCSI will always be faster than SATA because the OS sends the SCSI (controller?) a request to get a file and it will build the file inside of the SCSI controller, instead of searching all over the disk.. which I do not understand how that would work, so I figure it is BS. SAS and SATA currently have equivalent data rate speeds.. Is there any true backing for his reasoning that SCSI is always faster and more reliable than SATA?

  I am currently running a linux bridge in the following configuration ADSL Modem: 192.168.1.1 Linux Bridge: eth0: 192.168.1.2 eth1: no address Wireless Router: 192.168.0.1 My issue is that i cannot access the "Linux Bridge" shares using the WINS name of the server via client systems (yes i understand it is a transparent bridge but i can access it via the 192.168.1.2 address this is not on the same subnet as the client systems). This is the global section of my SMB.CONF [global] unix extensions = off os level = 20 netbios name = server guest account = nobody server string = 447 Server security = share #unix extensions = no #wins support = yes #wins server = 192.168.0.1 name resolve order = wins lmhosts hosts bcast interfaces bridge1 eth0 eth1 lo bind interfaces only = yes Can i access a bridged server using it's WINS name to access samba shares? • How do I install Ubuntu 13.10 from a partition on my Mac?

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 13.10 on my Macbook Air. I've previously had no issue installing from a USB stick to this machine. However, I don't currently have access to a USB stick or any external media at all! What I've done so far is partitioned my SSD into 3 partitions. One holds OS X, another is a 5gb partition intended for the install ISO, and a third is intended to be the target for that install. The second two partitions are formatted as FAT. I've used dd (with and without bs=1m) to "burn" my ISO to the small 5gb FAT partition. I also at one point tried using hdituil to convert my ISO file to IMG and went through the same process with same result below. After "burning" my ISO to the small partition, I reboot into Refind. Refind sees my small 5gb partition perfectly well, and when I select that partition it loads GRUB appropriately. However, from here, regardless of what I choose, Ubuntu will start to load and then after a few minutes crash out to: BuzyBox V1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands. (initramfs) unable to find a medium containing a live file system. I've Googled this error and found a number of people encountering it when trying to install from USB, but no solutions seem applicable to my case (installing from a partition on my SSD, to another partition on my SSD). Is there any solution to this, or do I just need to wait a few days until I have access to a USB stick? Many thanks in advance, and apologies for length -- I figured I'd err on the side of being exhaustive rather than having people suggest things I've already tried.

• Chrome: Black Screen of Death

  I dont know when it started to happen. The screen will turn into full black when a page include javascript (I think so). I cannot open Youtube videos, but I can still see the source code and the pointer to find links and buttons and I can hear the sound of video. I have tried to clear my cache and reinstalled to the latest version, but nothing seems work. Moreover, I have disabled the Pepperflash Player as well, but it did not help.   I need a powerful external Wi-Fi adapter for a couple of days. I heard that some types of router support this mode, allowing me to connect the router to my notebook and just use it as an external Wi-Fi interface. Is it possible to connect a router as an external Wi-Fi adapter? How can I determine it? Updated: My purpose is to set the router to monitor mode and check networks around through my notebook to provide better configuration for my network (power, channels, etc). My internal notebook Wi-Fi adapter is too weak for this purpose. Should I use special drivers for that? If yes, can someone describe, step-by-step, how to do it? p.s. I want to use ASUS RT-N56U as an external Wi-Fi adapter on OS X or Ubuntu.

• How to Launch Spotlight from the Terminal

  I used this tip top hide my menu bar in a bunch of applications, which is a great way to get more free screen space. The one downside is that (for inexplicable reasons) it disables Spotlight when I'm in those applications--e.g. even if I hover over the menu bar to make it appear, clicking on the Spotlight icon does nothing. I have a plan to work around this: I'd like to launch Spotlight using QuicKeys, which lets you run terminal commands using keyboard shortcuts. But to do that, I need to know how to launch Spotlight with a terminal command. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm on OS X 10.6.
