  • Dual-boot: Can't select Windows at boot

    - by user88561
I have a computer with 2 operating systems dual booted: One is Windows 7 and the other is Ubuntu. In the bootloader configuration, I removed an option stating time to select OS and I also set the default Operating System to Ubuntu. Now the bootloader is effectively proceeding into auto loading Ubuntu, while skipping itself. My problem is that I can not access my Windows 7 Operating System. Could someone give me a clue as to what to do?

Ubuntu 12.04 Nvidia GTX 550-Ti x-swat Nvidia driver Problem: Using 2 monitors. When screen locks there is a blue box on top of the wallpaper and password dialog box that hides the field for entering your password or switching users. Problem is on 2 systems with similar hardware (Nvidia card, x-swat driver, dual monitors) You can still type your password in blindly and hit enter to login but it's irritating to not be able to see the dialog box.

  • Avira Software Update Mistakenly Disabled Windows PCs

While Avira currently holds the number two ranking in terms of usage amongst antivirus manufacturers worldwide, its latest slipup will likely put a dent in its reputation. The problem with the latest service pack can be pinpointed to ProActiv, a program that monitors for any suspicious events that could lead to infection or attack. Users who applied the updates noticed that ProActiv was preventing their systems from booting, as critical Windows files could not run. Others also reported that ProActiv was blocking all .exe, or executable files, in Windows, making it impossible to launch appl...

  • How do you refer to the user using the application vs. the user being edited? [closed]

    - by Roman Royter
Suppose you are developing an administration page where the administrator can edit other users. In your code you want to distinguish between the user sitting in front of the screen, and the user being edited. What do you call the two? User, CurrentUser, EditedUser, CurrentEditUser, etc? Note that the admin user isn't necessarily real admin, they can be just an ordinary user given rights to edit other users.

  • USB 3.0 controller is not recognized

    - by BlueWanderer
I have a Thinkpad E430 notebook, and the intel's USB 3.0 controller can not be recognized by Ubuntu 12.04. The LED on my USB-HDD is white instead of blue (And in Windows 7, it is blue when connected to USB 3.0 port, and is white when connected to 2.0). And the transfer speed is around 25MB/s instead of 65MB/s in Windows 7. I'm not familiar with Linux systems, so I've no clue about what's going wrong. I've searched the web, but got no solution.

  • iptables change destination address base on result from mysql

    - by user1812225
I need to change destination address of tcp/ip packets based on result of execution mysql query... P.S. this is important that destination host knows REAL ip address where packet came from, not IP address of firewall.

  • Why Isn't Linux the Standard Secondary OS?

<b>OSTATIC: </b>"Among other reasons why Linux can function as a great sidekick to the more prevalent operating systems is that it's more secure. If you're going to jump into, say, an online banking app, why not do it in Linux, where the hackers and script kiddies aren't?"

  • windows 7 virtual wireless adapter keeps going to sleep

    - by conners
Just a quick question that I can't see mentioned anywhere online. I have a Windows 7 box configured like these guys recommend http://www.itgeekdiary.com/windows-7-as-an-wi-fi-access-point/ simply so that I can have my Windows 7 box as a wifi access point or a wifi emitter. It's also called a Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. But it powers off and shuts down automatically and stops working. Basically everything works as intended and then - well -it will stopped working when I am not at the Windows 7 PC for a long time. The problem seems to be that every time my PC goes to "power save / sleep" and in the morning the Windows 7 machine "wakes" but blooming heck the wifi has stopped and you have to power cycle the PC (which is very uncool). When I power Cycle I have to do the following as administrator C:\Windows\System32\netsh.exe wlan start hostednetwork I then tried a gazllion things involving services and power management and eventually discovered that if I run the following commands as administrator it will be ok (for a bit) but every 3rd ot 4th time I try this "trick" it simply fails. the trick that seems to work 3 out of 4 times (i.e. "most" of the time) C:\Windows\System32\netsh.exe wlan stop hostednetwork C:\Windows\System32\netsh.exe wlan start hostednetwork But why does this only work "some" of the time? What else I did by myself: on every manage adapter properties (that relates to the wifi) I right clicked [configure] [power management] /disabled/ "allow the computer to power off to save power" <- this made no difference Also (and this is a bit annoying) there is no system tray app/GUI for the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter output signal ... none... so (lame as it sounds) the ONLY way I can check if it's on is to physically go to another device and SCAN.. lame so my question can probably be solved by any of the following: a) can I stop Windows 7 sleeping this wifi when the machine sleeps b) can I force Windows to force wake this process on wake? if so how? c) what is the service / process REALLY called and how do I restart it if it crashes d) how can I flush the wifi properly rather power cycle the host machine e) anyone have a link to an program or app that can sit in the system tray that shows windows 7 wifi hotspot emission status (on/off/etc etc) Since I am a programmer I can easily write a vbs script / windows exe to fix this (and I will share this solution) and the gui problem if I can work out the actual service that is running that netsh stops/starts

  • Resize/Create a New Partition in GParted

    - by Charlie
So I've been having some trouble recently with Ubuntu and decided it was time to switch to windows. But I have no ntfs partitions on my hard disk and GParted will not let me resize my one large partition (/dev/sda1) so that I can allocate some ntfs space to install windows on. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've had this problem for quite some time now and it had just become one big headache. Thanks in advance!

  • Online Press Releases Essential For Non-Profits

An online Press Release has become a powerful tool to convey your message to a large and dispersed target audience. Where advertising serves as a form of direct self-promotion, a Press Release serves the same purpose but in a more subtle and informative manner. A PR for your non-profit should be used judiciously, when there is real newsworthy content to disseminate.

  • T-SQL Tuesday #34: HELP!

    - by merrillaldrich
I owe my career to the SQL Server community, specifically the Internet SQL Server community, so this month’s T-SQL Tuesday is especially poignant. I changed careers “cold” about eight years ago, and, while I had some educational background in computer science, I had relatively little real-world DBA experience. Someone gave me a shot in the form of an entry level job, for which I am grateful, but I also had to make the argument to him that I would figure out whatever I needed to do to be successful...(read more)

  • Estimates, constraint and design [closed]

    - by user65964
For your next two software projects (assuming that you're getting programming assignments, otherwise consider the program to find the min and max of a set of rational numbers) estimate how much effort they would take before doing them, then keep track of the actual time spent. How accurate were your estimates? State the requirements, constraint, design, estimate (your original estimate and the actual time it took), implementation (conventions used, implement/test path followed.

  • Should debug code be left in place, always, or added only when debugging and removed when the bug has been found?

    - by gablin
I, for one, only add debug code (such as print statements) when I'm trying to locate a bug. And once I've found it, I remove the debug code (and add a test case which specifically tests for that bug). I feel that it's cluttering the real code and therefore has no place there unless I'm debugging. How do you do it? Do you leave the debug code in place, or remove it when obsolete (which may be difficult to judge when that is)?

  • Learn Less, Do more! Is that true with PHP or ASP.NET?

    - by mallieem saleie
When comparing PHP and ASP.NET, I find that in ASP.NET with Visual Studio you can do things quickly with help of the IDE and the available controls. However, they say that it does not take much time to learn PHP as in asp.net. I want to reach to a point where I can understand which one will I learn quickly? Which one will help me in producing more results (I mean more web applications) if I learned both in 3 months time.

  • A quick look at: sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptors

    - by fatherjack
SQL Server places data into cache as it reads it from disk so as to speed up future queries. This dmv lets you see how much data is cached at any given time and knowing how this changes over time can help you ensure your servers run smoothly and are adequately resourced to run your systems. This dmv gives the number of cached pages in the buffer pool along with the database id that they relate to: USE [tempdb] GO SELECT COUNT(*) AS cached_pages_count , CASE database_id ...(read more)
