• Protobuf design patterns

  I am evaluating Google Protocol Buffers for a Java based service (but am expecting language agnostic patterns). I have two questions: The first is a broad general question: What patterns are we seeing people use? Said patterns being related to class organization (e.g., messages per .proto file, packaging, and distribution) and message definition (e.g., repeated fields vs. repeated encapsulated fields*) etc. There is very little information of this sort on the Google Protobuf Help pages and public blogs while there is a ton of information for established protocols such as XML. I also have specific questions over the following two different patterns: Represent messages in .proto files, package them as a separate jar, and ship it to target consumers of the service --which is basically the default approach I guess. Do the same but also include hand crafted wrappers (not sub-classes!) around each message that implement a contract supporting at least these two methods (T is the wrapper class, V is the message class (using generics but simplified syntax for brevity): public V toProtobufMessage() { V.Builder builder = V.newBuilder(); for (Item item : getItemList()) { builder.addItem(item); } return builder.setAmountPayable(getAmountPayable()). setShippingAddress(getShippingAddress()). build(); } public static T fromProtobufMessage(V message_) { return new T(message_.getShippingAddress(), message_.getItemList(), message_.getAmountPayable()); } One advantage I see with (2) is that I can hide away the complexities introduced by V.newBuilder().addField().build() and add some meaningful methods such as isOpenForTrade() or isAddressInFreeDeliveryZone() etc. in my wrappers. The second advantage I see with (2) is that my clients deal with immutable objects (something I can enforce in the wrapper class). One disadvantage I see with (2) is that I duplicate code and have to sync up my wrapper classes with .proto files. Does anyone have better techniques or further critiques on any of the two approaches? *By encapsulating a repeated field I mean messages such as this one: message ItemList { repeated item = 1; } message CustomerInvoice { required ShippingAddress address = 1; required ItemList = 2; required double amountPayable = 3; } instead of messages such as this one: message CustomerInvoice { required ShippingAddress address = 1; repeated Item item = 2; required double amountPayable = 3; } I like the latter but am happy to hear arguments against it.

• database independent coding framework options?

  Background: I have not programmed in a while besides doing VBA and a little VB.NET. So please forgive my language use. I'm green and have a head cold. I am reading all I can now, but I have no programming circles to draw from. The information I am providing is to help guide you to what I am looking for. I am not confident I can ask the question properly. Story: I have four different projects that I am starting. Obviously I won't be working on all at the same time however they each will have similar needs and be inter related. They are as follows: Desktop Environment/System User Interface - basically a product that runs on major computers via mono or .net that unifies the look and functions. In the context of the up coming question it would be able to directly access data of various types. It would work in tandum with my office suite, system manager, and network application framework. Office Suite - technically it would not be a suite since I will be doing it from one interfacel except for the Communications Application. As far as the question, it will need to be able to link to various data sources for storing files and using, manipulating, and presenting information. System Manager - an intellegent system to manage and administer the entire network and all equipment. As far as the question, needs to be able to access data for archiving and and for accessing it's own settings stored in various formats, sql or xml. Network Application Framework - A complete system that can be used for ERP, CRM, CMS, Errata, File Management, and so on. As to the question to be able to access it's own or interlink with existing applications. Requirement: C#, Simplifies and reduces coding, use the same code to access diffent databases(ie MySQL, MS SQL, ACCESS, XML, ...), Mono would be nice but not a must, Question: What librarys, frameworks, or other options would be able to help with this? Is there a good resource to guide me? I don't want arguing over what is best, just information to help me further understand and make an educated decision.

• Trying to find resources to learn how to test software [closed]

  First off, yes this is a general question, and I'd be perfectly happy to move this to another portion of SE, but I didn't see a more fitting sub. Basically, I am hoping a more experienced QA tester can come along and really fill in some basics for me. So far, websites seem to be sparse in terms of explaining languages involved, basic practices, etc. So, I'm sorry in advance if this is too general, but towards the end of this post I ask some specific questions if it's just absolutely unacceptable to speak in general terms. I just landed a position as Junior Systems and QA Engineer with a social media startup. Their QA and testing is almost nonexistent, so if I do a good job, I imagine I'll find a lot of bugs and have a secure role in the business. I'm pretty good with the systems aspect of my role, but I need to learn more about the QA and testing aspects. We run hardware that's touchscreen based - the user can use and interact with the devices. So, in terms of my QA role, in the short term, I need to build scripts to test the hardware/software as a 'user' to try to uncover bugs. First off, what language should these scripts be written in? Does anyone have some examples? What about the longer term 'automated testing'? I'm familiar with regression testing as the developer adds in new features, sure, but the 50,000 other types of testing, not so much. Most of our hardware runs dotnet/C# code, with some of the servers running Java - but I don't expect to need to run tests on the Java side at this point. I hope to meet with one developer today and try to get a good idea of the output from the hardware so that I can 'mock' this data that gets sent to servers, to try to bugtest. Eventually, we will be moving the hardware to be closer to where I live and work, so that I can test virtually and on real hardware. So a lot of the bugs we're dealing with now are like this: the Local Server, which kiosks report their data to gets updated from the kiosks, but the remote server does not. Or, vis versa when the user registers on a kiosk, the remote server updates but the local server does not. But yeah, without much more detail, I imagine a lot of this info isn't helpful. I've bought a book "How Google Tests Software", but it's really a book more about 'how their software testing is different from Microsoft'. It doesn't teach how to test so much as why their methods are better. Does anyone have a good book that I can buy? An ebook maybe? My local Barnes and Noble kinda had a terrible selection. I also figure a book from 2005 is not necessarily that good either.

• Most simple way to do holiday calculation?

  I want to make a little free calendar program to help me and others calculate how much time we have got left in a project. I mean real working time, not just time. Time in a raw form is not saying much. Typically when my boss tells me that I have time until 05-05-2011 it doesn't tell me really how much time I have to do my job. You know...so many things stop me from work: A) beeing at home, not at work (so called "free time" or "spare time"). That is in my case I work exactly 8 hours a day and then the cleaning ladies throw me out of the office with their incredible loud industrial vacuum cleaners every evening (my boss accepts that as an excuse to go home in time, regularly). B) weekends, or more precisely saturdays and sundays C) official holiday rescuing me from having to go to work. what I want to do is make a little utility which tells me how many working hours I really have in a given time period. The first two things A and B are pretty easy to implement. But the last thing C scares my pants off. Holidays. OOOHHH man. You know what that means. Chaos. Pure chaos. The huge question is: HOW TO CALCULATE HOLIDAYS?! Since I want my program to be useful for anyone anywhere in the world, I can't just hardcode all holidays for my little town. So which options do I have? I) I could hand-craft downloadable lists of holidays. Users search them within the application and download them from an webserver. Or I ship all of them in the package. But I would get very, very old if I tried that by myself for every country, state and town. II) I make an initial data sheet with holidays for my town, and don't care about the rest. However, I make that sheet with an how-to public, so that everyone who feels like beeing very nice can provide holiday data for his country / region / whatever. Those are made public on a webserver and everyone can get the data packages he/she needs for the app. III) ? I care a lot about usability. I don't want to make an ugly linux hack style hard to use app that only computer freaks can use. So you need to tell me more about holiday science. I was never really clever at this. I assume every single country in the world has it's own set of holidays. In every country there may be several states. For example the US has some, and Germany has also some states. Holidays vary from state to state. But I know from an good programmer he told me never assume anything. So the questions about holiday science are: Which categories do I need to make holiday-data-packs searchable? A guy from India should find quickly his holiday data pack, and a guy from Sillicon Valley should find his pack as equally fast. It makes most sense to me to filter for COUNTRY STATE WHATEVER. Like a drill-down-search. Did I miss something? What would be the best data format to hold holiday information? A holiday has a start and end date and a name. That should be enough. Would I put all this stuff in thousands of XML files? How would you go about this? Any hint / help is highly welcome! Thanks to everyone!

• WebSphere Application Server EJB Optimization

  We are working on developing a Java EE based application. Our application is Java 1.5 compatible and will be deployed to WAS ND 6.1.0.21 with EBJ 3.0 and Web Services feature packs. The configuration is currently one cell with two clusters. Each cluster will have two nodes. Our application, or our system, as I should rather say, comes in two or three parts. Part 1: An ear deployed to one cluster that contains 3rd party vendor code combined with customization code. Their code is EJB 2.0 compliant and has a lot of Remote Home interfaces. Part 2: An ear deployed to the same cluster as the first ear. This ear contains EBJ 3's that make calls into the EJB 2's supplied by the vendor and the custom code. These EJB 3's are used by the JSF UI also packaged with the EAR, and some of them are also exposed as web services (JAX-WS 2.0 with SOAP 1.2 compliance) for other clients. Part 3: There may be other services that do not depend on our vendor/custom code app. These services will be EJB 3.0's and web services that are deployed to the other cluster. Per a recommendation from some IBM staff on site here, communication between nodes in a cluster can be EJB RMI. But if we are going across clusters and/or other cells, then the communication should be web services. That said, some of us are wondering about performance and optimizing communication for speed of our applications that will use our web services and EJB's. Right now most EJB's are exposed as remote. (and our vendor set theirs up that way, rather than also exposing local home interfaces). We are wondering if WAS does any optimizations between apps in the same node/cluster node space. If two apps are installed in the same area and they call each other via remote home interface, is WAS smart enough to make it a local home interface call? Are their other optimization techniques? Should we consider them? Should we not? What are the costs/benefits? Here is the question from one of our team members as sent in their email: The question is: Supposing we develop our EJBs as remote EJBs, where our UI controller code is talking to our EXT java services via EJB3...what are our options for performance optimization when both the EJB server and client are running in the same container? As one point of reference, google has given me some oooooold websphere performance tuning documentation from 2000 that explains a tuning configuration you can set to enable Call By Reference for EJB communication when they're in the same application server JVM. It states the following: Because EJBs are inherently location independent, they use a remote programming model. Method parameters and return values are serialized over RMI-IIOP and returned by value. This is the intrinsic RMI "Call By Value" model. WebSphere provides the "No Local Copies" performance optimization for running EJBs and clients (typically servlets) in the same application server JVM. The "No Local Copies" option uses "Call By Reference" and does not create local proxies for called objects when both the client and the remote object are in the same process. Depending on your workload, this can result in a significant overhead savings. Configure "No Local Copies" by adding the following two command line parameters to the application server JVM: * -Djavax.rmi.CORBA.UtilClass=com.ibm.CORBA.iiop.Util * -Dcom.ibm.CORBA.iiop.noLocalCopies=true CAUTION: The "No Local Copies" configuration option improves performance by changing "Call By Value" to "Call By Reference" for clients and EJBs in the same JVM. One side effect of this is that the Java object derived (non-primitive) method parameters can actually be changed by the called enterprise bean. Consider Figure 16a: Also, we will also be using Process Server 6.2 and WESB 6.2 as well in the future. Any ideas? recommendations? Thanks

• I am making a maze type of game using javascript and HTML and need some questions answered [on hold]

  First off, i am a noob to JavaScript but am willing to learn. :) I found a simple JavaScript moment engine created by another member on this site. Using that i made it so my character can walk around within a rectangle/square shaped room. I want to make it so the character can walk through a "doorway" within a wall to the next room. Either that or make it so if the character moves over a certain image within the room it will take the player to another webpage in which the character "spawns" into the room and so on and so fourth. • "Error in the Site Data Web Service." when performing crawl

  Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. (Value does not fall within the expected range.), but this is not the case as thats an old issue and i hope it has been included in SP2... Logs are from olders to newest (descending order). They don't appear to be very helpful.   I am writing a program that opens LPT1 and writes a value to it. The WriteFile function is returning an error code of 1167, "The device is not connected". The Device Manager shows that LPT1 is present. I have a cable connected between a development board and the PC. The cable converts JTAG pin signals to signals on the parallel port. Power is applied and the cable is connected between the development board and the PC. The development board is powered on. I am using: Windows XP MS Visual Studio 2008, C language, console application, debug environment.   I use memcached in a untrust network, so I try to use sasl and pam to auth connection to memcached. I installed sasl and pam module, compiled and installed memcached with sasl enabled. Also I created db and table for pam user. But my python script cannot be authed, always authentication failed returned. • Weird "missing" CD/DVD driver during Windows Server 2008 installation

  Hi. We have an old PowerEdge 860 that we're trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 onto. At present the machine doesn't have any OS installed, so we're doing a clean install from a DVD. Pretty simple stuff. The problem is that, although the installation process starts off well (asking for language and locale settings), as soon as we click "Install Now" we're told "A required CD/DVD device driver is missing." The operating system has already booted from our only DVD drive(!). I've seen other people complain about this problem (usually in relation to installing Vista or Windows 7) but I've not found a 100% solution yet. (Our DVD drive is a Hitachi LG GWA-4400N, salvaged from an old laptop. There have never been any drivers released for this device, nor any firmware updates.) The most promising lead I have is from someone claiming that Windows is actually asking for a driver for the ATAPI/IDE Controller here. UPDATE See my answer below... It was most likely a corrupt download. (*shame*) I will update this question when I know for sure.

• Screen scraping software that will traverse pages

  We're creating a mashup site that pulls information from many sources all over the web. Many of these sites don't provide RSS feeds or APIs to access the information they provide. This leaves us with screen scraping as our method for collecting the data. There are many scripting tools out there written in different scripting languages for screen scraping that require you to write scraping scripts in the language the scraper was written in. Scrapy, scrAPI, and scrubyt are a few written in Ruby and Python. There are other web-based tools I've seen like Dapper that create XML or RSS feeds based on a webpage. It has a beautiful web-based interface that requires no scripting skills to use. This would be a great tool, if it were able to traverse multiple pages to gather data from hundreds pages of results. We need something that will scrape information from paginated web sites, much like scrubyt, but with a user interface that a non-programmer could use. We'll script up our own solution if we need to, probably using scrubyt, but if there's a better solution out there, we want to use it. Does anything like this exist?

  I'm running a node.js service (statsd) on CentOS 6. What's the proper way to daemonize and start such a service? Potential Daemonizers--are daemonizers supposed to be language-specific or general?: forever (node-specific) daemonize nohup (presumably wrong) start-stop-daemon(debian-only? is this for daemonizing or starting/stopping? what is the Centos equivalent?) Should the app itself really know how to daemonize itself and then have a -d flag? (e.g. via node-daemonize2 or forever-monitor?) Service starters--should these be from the system/distro, or should they be from monitoring tools such as monit?: service? is really /etc/init.d on CentOS? service? is really Upstart on Ubuntu? monit? daemontools? runit?   I've tried to setup an EasyPHP in local and make it visible from the Web via DynDNS, which I've already successed many times before, but now this just doesn't work, maybe I've forgotten something... *The "server" is a common workstation. Here is what I have done : 1) Installed EasyPhp (with a index.php/html file in WWW folder) 2) Changed the port in the config to port 80 3) Forwarded port 80 to the server IP in my router configuration 4) Added the server to the router DMZ *Also tried removing antivirus/firewall I've installed PortListener, pointed it on port 80, and when I access "myname.dyndns.com" it says Client connected GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: xyz.dyndns-remote.com User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; fr; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101026 Firefox/3.6.12 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,/;q=0.8 Accept-Language: fr,fr-fr;q=0.8,en-us;q=0.5,en;q=0.3 Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate Accept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 Keep-Alive: 115 Connection: keep-alive So the server is accessible via Web, receive the connection successfully, but in my browser it says that the connection failed and show nothing...

  I have a very stubborn, well-known locale error on Ubuntu 9.10: perl: warning: Setting locale failed. perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: LANGUAGE = (unset), LC_ALL = (unset), LC_TIME = "custom.UTF-8", LANG = "en_US.UTF-8" Tried the following: Added LANG=en_US.UTF-8 and LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 to /etc/environment Run apt-get install --reinstall locales (error: perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C"). /usr/bin/mandb: can't set the locale; make sure $LC_* and $LANG are correct) Run sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales. Result: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory, and then updates locales all locales including en_US.UTF-8 sudo locale-gen updates all locales successfully, including en_US.UTF-8 sudo locale-gen un_US en_US.UTF-8 gives no error nor other output In /etc/default/locale it says LANG="en_US.UTF-8" echo $LANG gives en_US.UTF-8 /var/lib/locales/supported.d/local says en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8 locale -a gives me: C en_AG en_AU.utf8 en_BW.utf8 en_CA.utf8 en_DK.utf8 en_GB.utf8 en_HK.utf8 en_IE.utf8 en_IN en_NG en_NZ.utf8 en_PH.utf8 en_SG.utf8 en_US.utf8 en_ZA.utf8 en_ZW.utf8 POSIX So well... • ESXI 5.1 - Unable to trunk to cisco switch

  I have configured my esxi host vSwitch1 to use the secondary NIC on my VMware host. On vSwitch1 configuration I have set the VLAN to 4095 which specifies to allow all VLANs. If my cisco switch port configuration is set to an access port my server can ping the vlan interface on the switch. If my cisco switch port configuration is set to a trunk, whilst it stays UP UP and CDP information is available, I lose my ping from VMware VM server to the local vlan interface on the switch and I lose any server connectivity to my network.
