• How can I restore my Acer Aspire one GNU version 1.98 to factory settings?

  Requires keyring and authentication to install and unistall programs or update anything. I just want to restart from scratch so i can clean it up anyways. Can anyone help? Also, on start up a list on a black screen will come up saying Ubuntu with linux version 26.32-40 generic or recovery version and at the bottom of different versions has one Window 7 loader option. When I get into recovery menu to try and restore to factory settings my netbook has no restore option. I've tried pressing alt-f10 and holding alt and repeatedly tap f10 but nothing seems to work, and my acer asks for a password login to even load windows 7 which I don't have. Any ideas? I've looked a lot on the internet for help but I'm getting to my last resort, to get of this thing for once and for all. I want to be able to personalize and add programs as I please, this is all bs to go through to unistall one freaking game or get rid of ubuntu gnome keyring!! Please help!! Thank you. :)

• error/message: the disk drive for /home is not ready... when connecting an external hard drive

  i am running Ubuntu 10.04 all updated installed to date (3/28/2012) and when i connect another sata HD i get this message the disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present continue to wait, or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery so i press S but i get this message could not update ICEauthority file /home/username/.ICEauthority And when a press close i get this there is a problem with the configuration server (/usr/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256) And when a press close i get message Nautilus could not create the following required folders :/home/username/desktop,/home/username/.Nautilus before running Nautilus, please create these folders or set permissons such that Nautilus can reach them And finally when a press Ok at the last message it disappears and i get a blank screen with a lot of colors on it and with nothing else so i shutdown (power button ) and disconnect the HD and boot without problems so how to fix this in simple commands because i am a total Linux noob notes -In the original error my username was in place of username i wrote (did not want to confuse anybody ) -I tried searching for this problem but a got a lot of different answers and most of them were really complicated to me and not working -I got a data HD connected and working without problems also the HD i installed Ubuntu on is Sata (maybe it helps) -Apologize for me bad English its not my mother language

  When I connect my iPhone 3GS to my PC, iTunes "freezes": Activity Monitor shows iTunes as "Not Responding". The iPhone indicates that it is being charged, and otherwise seems normal. When I disconnect the iPhone, iTunes immediately returns to normal operation. Connect again, and instant freeze again. I have rebooted the PC, uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it and have reset the iPhone. No help. Everything worked fine yesterday. I haven't installed software or changed anything since the last time I synced. iPhone 3GS is running version 3.1.2(7D11). It is jailbroken.

• Problem deleting files in Windows 7

  Happens sometimes but frequently enough to be a pain in the bum. I press Del or Shift + Del but the file stays there. Then when I try to delete it again, it says that I need permission from the Admin. For it to be deleted, usually I have to restart my computer List of things I've tried: I have admin privileges Hasn't happened since I reinstalled Windows and another form of this happened in my install before the last one I tried takeown in cmd but it says ERROR: Access is denied The files sometimes disappear by themselves after 2 mins or so Refreshing the folder doesn't do anything Unlocker doesn't work either. • XP Laptop Restarting

  I have a Dell 1525 which I reinstalled xp on recently due to a hard disk problem. Apparently I've missed something, it's taken to restarting for no apparent reason (I believe it's too frequent for windows updates which was my first thought). Last night it was particularly bad, it stopped 5 times in 2 hours while playing an online game. I can't actually think of a time it's happened when it's not running something in full screen mode. I can't see anything in the event log apart from usual start up details. How can I find and fix this issue?

• Wordpress redirects to itself endlessly

  I've just upgraded to last version (2.9.1) from kinda late version (2.2.1). After the upgrade I've realized that you cannot access wordpress from my .com domain, however it is possible via other subdomain! db-he.110mb.com works fine while http://www.db-he.com doesn't. That both redirect to the same server, and configurations are fine. However you cannot surf index.php (which is wordpress'). www.db-he.com/index.php is doing a permanent redirect to www.db-he.com/index.php for some reason. Problem is with wordpress only. All other files works fine. For example, changes.txt can be accessed from both links: www.db-he.com/changes.txt db-he.110mb.com/changes.txt For some reason, it seems more a server problem than a wordpress problem. What can I do?

• Kloxo - Use third party nameserver

  Here's my case: I got my domain from a registrar. I got my VPS up from a provider who also offers free DNS hosting, on their own server (separately from my VPS, IP:111.111.111.111). So I got these third-party nameservers, lets name them: ns1.provider.com ns2.provider.com and pointed my domain registrar to them. I let it propagate for 24 hours so I believe its ok. (if I ping my domain I get the IP for these nameservers - 111.111.111.111) Afterwards I headed to my providers cPanel (the one they gave me for the DNS hosting service) and changed the default A Record IP from 111.111.111.111 to the IP associated with my VPS (IP:222.222.222.222). The last step, as I see it, is to configure my VPS via Kloxo panel and add the domain. Can someone guide me how can I achieve that? Is it just enough to create a new DNS Template and add as Primary DNS "ns1.provider.com" and Secondary DNS "ns2.provider.com"? Every tutorial I found is using Kloxo to create local nameservers on the same VPS which is something I want to avoid to save resources..

• Image an entire computer

  I want to start doing a computer repair. I know that some issues may arise (what if I do something wrong and ruin the entire computer?). I'm not saying I'm not confident in my work, but accidents do happen sometimes. Now, the best solution this problem would be to simply just backup their entire computer and restore it if anything goes wrong. If I have an external HD, are there any available methods to create an entire image for the computer so no matter what I do, I can just reload it's last state?

Then I have my insurance expenses and I want to understand, graphically, how much of my total income went away to pay insurance... I know that a basic proportion like: total expenses : total insurance costs = 100 : x do the correct math but I can't find a way to display this in a cake graph... Any hints?

• Two Hidden NetBeans Keyboard Shortcuts for Opening & Toggling between Views

  The following are two really basic shortcuts for working with NetBeans editor windows that will be added to the Keyboard Shortcuts card for NetBeans IDE 7.2: Ctrl-Alt-PgUp/PgDown: Shortcuts for switching between editor types (e.g. Source, Design, History buttons). Switching between the editor types is a frequent operation sometimes, e.g., when using GUI builder, and while it can be done easily via mouse, or from View | Editors menu, it is very handy to know the shortcuts as well. Ctrl-PgUp/PgDown: Similarly, these are shortcuts for switching to next/previous opened document (tab). Note this is not like Ctrl-Tab that cycles in the last used order, but going through the tabs as they appear in the editor. Both shortcuts should fit into the "Opening and Toggling between Views" section. These are important to mention on the card because they are not visible anywhere else in the UI (as there are no menu items like "Go to next/previous editor type" or "Go to next/previous document"). • Windows Software to Save Arbitrary Application State

  VM software does a great job of saving state when you "turn it off," allowing instant and immediate return to that previous state. Is there some application for Windows that allows me to do the same thing, for any arbitrary software? It would allow me to save/restore state, possibly via a shell command or button that it appends to every window. Edit: For clarity, there are two types of apps: those that save their own states, and those that save others' states. Those that save their own state are like Chrome, which on load, reloads the windows you had open last time. That's not what I'm asking about; I'm asking for an app that can save the state of other apps, kind of like VM software does; but for any app. (A trivial test would be load notepad++, type a bunch of stuff, and save-state; on reset-state, you should be able to multi-level undo a lot of what you wrote, as if you never shut down the application.)

  Right now I have daily (differential) and weekly (full) backups set on my SQL Server 2008 R2 as jobs for SQL Server Agent with email notifications if job fails. I do get emails like this: JOB RUN: 'Daily backup.Diff backup' was run on 4/11/2012 at 3:00:00 AM DURATION: 0 hours, 0 minutes, 28 seconds STATUS: Failed MESSAGES: The job failed. The Job was invoked by Schedule 9 (Daily backup.Diff backup). The last step to run was step 1 (Diff backup). but often that happens because we delete/create new databases - and diff backup fails. And the only way for me to see the actual reason is to go to Log Viewer - Maintenance Plans logs. Is it possible to include "Error Message" field from the logs into notification emails? And more generic - is it possible to change notification email templates somehow?.. Thanks you.

  I've recently ran into a very odd occurrence on one system I'm using. For no apparent reason, my user account was deleted, although the home directory is still there. I have root access, so I can restore the account, but first, I want to know how this happened, and exactly when. Inspecting the root's .bash_history file and the "last" command gave nothing, and I'm (well, was) the only sudoer on the system. How would I know when this deletion happened? The distro is CentOS release 5.4 (Final), if that helps.

• My new hard drive won't automount on boot

  I installed a new hard drive right before installing the new Ubuntu 11.10 by reformatting, not upgrading. I was able to mount my drive, and partition it. It's a 1TB, and I was able to transfer all of my music, and videos to it. For some reason, it won't mount on boot, and I can't figure out how to manually mount it afterwards either. • IE8 Stopped Keeping History

  Like the title says, apparently my IE8 has stopped keeping the history of pages I've visited. I've searched SU and Google and can't find anything that seems to describe what I'm seeing. I have IE set to retain history for 999 days (the maximum allowed): As you can see below, apart from today and last Thursday, IE appears to be oblivious to any activity more recent than three weeks ago. Clicking on either "Thursday" or "Today" reveals no recorded history, however. Very odd behavior. Finally, the history does extend back 30 weeks to when I built the computer, and there is recorded history for every week. I'd appreciate suggestions. NB. Windows 7 Ultimate, x64 (but 32-bit IE8).

• How to verify if my copy operation is complete in Windows 7?

  Yesterday, I was leaving some job of copying a directory to run overnight. This morning however, I found the computer had restarted because of Windows Update or something. I was wondering if there is some way to check if the copy is complete? One way I guess would be check the last modified time of the copy, and when the system restarted. But I was wondering where to find the time when the system restarted? I was also wondering if where to find some logging files that have the records. I know Event Viewer, but don't know where to find within it. Other methods are welcome too. I also would like to hear suggestions for other ways to accomplish the copy instead of just simple copy and paste. Thanks and regards!

• What gaming keyboard(s) will work with Ubuntu?

  I've been looking at gaming keyboards to use on Ubuntu system. Microsoft has a few popular ones (e.g., Sidewinder X4, X6), but the programmable function keys appear to be unusable without the Windows software. (Though here's a post from someone who has a more recent project that uses usbmon and xdotool to add functions to some keys.) Another choice in my budget is the Cyborg V.05. It seems about right for my needs, but I would be depressed having a bunch of useless, nonprogrammable keys on it. Logitech has some models (e.g., the Logitech G110), though again I expect that the extensive macro capabilities (which I don't need) would be lost under Linux. There's a project called g15tools which has some code to work with older Logitech gaming models, but I don't know what the current status is. Last entry there was in March 2010. There are also a number of very old posts around the internet with regard to the Logitech G11 and G15. Compatibility with the current keyboards, Ubuntu version, and Linux kernel are suspect. I'm in the U.S., and so it appears that few of the Roccat keyboards are available, and they're over-priced. Support might be OK for these, though -- there's a short Phoronix article about Roccat improving their Linux support, and there's also a project and webpage for "Using Roccat Hardware with Linux". Honestly, the only feature I have to have is good backlighting for the keys, and if it's not wired (which is fine), the wireless capability should function. I could probably live with dead function keys, as long as they weren't in places that would interfere with things like Unity/compiz shortcuts. Any experience or suggestions? I've not seen much to inspire confidence with programmable/macro keys. There is a thread (with no solutions) on the Sidewinder X4 on ubuntuforums here. I'm also considering the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard as a possibility, even though it's not specifically a gaming keyboard. It is backlit, and it's supposed to be a nice keyboard.

• http request terminating early

  I noticed that on some of my sites, images were occasionally not getting downloaded fully. After a bit of investigation it appears that it is not restricted to images - .css, .js etc were also occasionally terminating early. The faults appear to be random. When I use the debug/proxy tool Fiddler2 reports that fewer bytes have been received than were requested. Firebug reports "Image corrupt or truncated". Obviously this is mainly a concern between me and my hosting company. However despite many emails they have not been able to get to the bottom of it. Transfer to another hosting company is obviously an option but is really a last resort. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or can anyone suggest what might be causing it. Or any apache setting or something that I can ask them to check out. Will apache log this kind of error - they havent been able to provide me with any logs, but if I know exactly where things have been logged, maybe I can prompt them in to action.

It a muti author site where people are engaged in writing posts, comments, updating status etc. According to Google Analytics this month traffic Visitor = 45,764 Pageview = 1,051,186 Visit = 141,447 I have cdn my site, compress the css, used w3 Total cache plugin to optimize my site. Since last month I am getting several down notice from Pingdom. Right now I am facing more down alert than before. And have to restart my site several time to up again. Is my hosting resource is not enough? Do I need more resource? or what could be the solution? Helpful suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks.

• Thinking about open-sourcing quiz project [closed]

  I was thinking about starting an open source project. I have a few projects that might work ok as an open project but thought I might dip my toe into the water with a simple quiz project. The idea is you can add questions to a quiz, arrange questions by topic, difficulty or location. Users would hopefully get an interesting quiz, tuned to their ability. At the end they'd get a score and hopefully they might provide either some feedback on the questions or even supply a few questions of their own. I couldn't see a similar project (fame's last words). I have a basic version of the project that gives the user a bunch of questions to answer in 10 minutes. It doesn't currently group the questions into topics, and no feedback is taken. I've also been told the graphical questions don't work on Ipads for some reason. Would this be a suitable project to go open source? I did find various quiz's out there but all seemed rather narrowly focused. I really wanted something that could cover any type of question on any type of subject. I prefer to keep the questions in MySQL but I could see how this might make it more difficult for others to get on board - should I move to data files? • Monitor doesn't turn on the first try, is power supply failure imminent?

  I been noticing for the last couple days that when I turn on my computer and then my monitor(22inch lcd) that my monitor does not turn on. I push the "on" button and the blue light comes on but the screen is blank. I usually have to then restart my computer and then my monitor will show in the upper left hand corner a dialog bog that says "analog" and it is flickering. Then everything goes to normal. Thinking it is the power supply but at the same time the tower is a year old(it came with a power supply). So when I take that into consideration I am not sure.

• It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

  Oracle OpenWorld 2012 is behind us. Well, for San Francisco, anyhow. The team is already working on the Latin America event which takes place in December in Sao Paulo, and an OpenWorld in Asia for 2013 as well. And of course they're already working on the next San Francisco OpenWorld for 2013. So what happens after the conference is over? People pack up demo and network gear and ship it out to wherever it's going next; take down and recycle signage; strike the keynote set, the exhibition and demo halls, the street tents, and anything else that was constructed just for the conference. There's a lot of post-conference analyis going on too. Oracle and partner marketing teams are looking at and following up on the leads they got from booth, demo, and lounge traffic. The events team is evaluating the session and conference surveys you filled out if you attended -- looking to identify the best speakers, what worked and didn't work, how you liked the venues, the food, the entertainment, the presentations. From all of that information will come recommendations for next year on what to keep doing, what to do better, and what not to do at all. The goal for each year's conference is to be better than last year's. I love how it is a 'living book' and that on a monthly basis new updates are made available. In this particular update, as before, reader comments and questions have led to changes and enhancements in the book. In addition, there's now a tighter integration between the long list of samples on GitHub and the book, since wherever a sample relates to a text in the book, the book has a handy icon, so that you know when to hop over to GitHub to get a related sample. • ruby on rails server is intermittently slow

  My rails installation was chugging along nicely. Last night we had to perform a hot-patch with was really a standard deploy of some exception code. Once capistrano finished the operation one of our admins discovered that there were two long running passenger processes. While we have deployed release over the past two weeks it would appear that these processes have been here and alive the whole time. Granted they could have been zombies or any other artifact and at this point we do not know what state they were in. Which leads me to the question: There are so many moving parts between the rails application and the OS/hardware that being a SME is probably no longer possible. So; how does a sysadmin perform root-cause analysis with any certainty? And: When do I just start rebooting servers?
