• Invoking active_record error - can not load file in Ruby on Rails

  I am trying to detect a midair collision problem (simultaneous editin) using selenium. • Database security / scaling question

  Typically I use a database such as MySQL or PostGreSQL on the same machine as the application using it, which makes access easy and secure. I'm just now building the first site that will have a separate physical database server (later this year it will). I'm wondering 3 things: (security) What things should I look into for starters pertaining to security of accessing a separate machine's database? (scalability) Are their scalability issues that I should think about pertaining to this (technology agnostic)? (more ServerFaultish but related) If starting the DB out on the same physical server (using a separate VMWare VM) and later moving to a different physical server, are there implicit problems that I'll have to deal with? Isn't another VM still accessed via localhost? If these questions are completely ludicrous, I apologize to you DB experts.

• Compilation of latex file

  Hi, I am compiling a latex file on a server and download from there the generated dvi, ps and pdf files to view them. The latex file by \includegraphics includes some figure files which are not on my local machine. I found that dvi file generated by latex command does not show the figures after dowloaded to my local, but ps file generated by dvips -Ppdf have the figures, and pdf file generated by either ps2pdf or pdflatex seem not have the figures again. Is it because the figures are not actually embeded as part of the dvi and pdf files by those compilation commands? How to actually embed figures so we can only export the document files to other machines? are the case for tables in separated tex files included into main tex file by /input and the case for style files included by \usepackage similar to the above case for figure files included by \includegraphics ? • Connecting to Python XML RPC from the Mac

  Hi, I wrote an XML RPC server in python and a simple Test Client for it in python. The Server runs on a linux box. I tested it by running the python client on the same linux machine and it works. I then tried to run the python client on a Mac and i get the following error socket.error: (61, 'Connection Refused') I can ping and ssh into the linux machine from the Mac. So i dont think its a configuration or firewall error. Does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong? • Correct way to get absolute url in django

  A problem that I stumbled upon recently, and, even though I solved it, I would like to hear your opinion of what correct/simple/adopted solution would be. I'm developing website using Django + python. When I run it on local machine with "python manage.py runserver", local address is http://127.0.0.1:8000/ by default. However, on production server my app has other url, with path - like "http://server.name/myproj/" I need to generate and use permanent urls. If I'm using {% url view params %}, I'm getting paths that are relative to / , since my urls.py contains this urlpatterns = patterns('', (r'^(\d+)?$', 'myproj.myapp.views.index'), (r'^img/(.*)$', 'django.views.static.serve', {'document_root': settings.MEDIA_ROOT + '/img' }), (r'^css/(.*)$', 'django.views.static.serve', {'document_root': settings.MEDIA_ROOT + '/css' }), ) So far, I see 2 solutions: modify urls.py, include '/myproj/' in case of production run use request.build_absolute_uri() for creating link in views.py or pass some variable with 'hostname:port/path' in templates Are there prettier ways to deal with this problem? • Programatically check whether a drive letter is a shared/network drive

  Hi SO community! I searched a while but found nothing that helped me. Is there a way to check whether a drive letter stands for a shared drive/network drive or a local disc in python? I guess there is some windows api function that gives me that info, but I cant find it. Perhaps there is even a method already integrated in python? What I am looking for is something with this or similar behaviour: someMagicMethod("C:\") #outputs True 'is a local drive' someMagicMethod("Z:\") #outputs False 'is a shared drive' That would help me as well: someMagicMethod2() #outputs list of shared drive letters Thanks a lot in advance!

• Compile Problem with MySQL C API on MAC OS X 10.6

  Hi guys, i've a Problem with MySQL C API and Mac OS X 10.6. When i want to compile a SQL Client Program, it aborts with this Error Message ld: library not found for -lmysqlclient collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I compile with this command: g++ -I /usr/local/mysql/include/ -L /usr/local/mysql/lib/ -lmysqlclient main.cpp I've tried the Headers and Librarys in different locations - no effect I've downloaded the headers and the Library from an other Destination - Same effect as before Any Ideas what i am doing wrong? • Manually removing sql server 2008

  I am not able to remove sql server 2008 from my machine. I installed it in the past as a part of the installation of an application, this installed the runtime of sql server 2008 SP0. But now I cannot uninstall. I tried to use the setup of SP0 and even of SP2 but it was not able to uninstall, by giving fatal errors when it does the preliminary checks. This means that the only option I have is format my machine? I cannot even intall a new instance, something is really corrupted. Is it a way to remove it manually?

• How do I get an unexpanded REG_EXPAND_SZ string from a remote registry?

  I am currently using RegistryKey.GetValue(string name, object defaultValue, RegistryValueOptions options) with RegistryValueOptions.DoNotExpandEnvironmentNames for the options value. However, this is only valid when run on the local machine. Digging down via Reflector, I find it expands the strings locally. Which means that irrespective of the setting, the strings come down remotely already expanded. Has anyone come across a solution to this that does not require running a process directly on the remote machine to get a REG_EXPAND_SZ value? Update: I attempted to use WMI's StdRegProv provider to gain access, but it still expands the strings before sending them back.

• Git: hide commit messages on remote repo

  Hi, I don't know how to bring my problem on the point so I try to explain it a bit ;-) When working with git on my local maschine I usually commit a lot. For this I use topic branches. Then I merge such a topic branch into a branch called develop which will be pushed to a remote repo. I always merge with --no-ff so their is always a commit for my whole topic. Now I'd like to only push this commit with a specified description what I did on the whole in this branch. I would prefer this because you can look at the commit history on the server and see directly what happend and don't need to read every single commit. And for my local work I would have the full history if I want to reset my branch or something similar. I don't know if their is a way to do this in git but it would be very useful for me so I give it a try to ask you ;-) Best regards, Sebastian

  Is there a way how to recognize that you don't know something? For example, I had some hard realizations: I didn't know that criticism isn't a good way to teach your friends. I realized that after reading How to Win Friends & Influence People. I didn't know about the fundamental needed for an indutive bias in machine learning. If I have read Mitchell's Machine Learning book early, I would know it. I haven't found it mentioned in other books and papers. Sorry if the question is too generic. The question could also mean: How to know that you are missing something important about your programming language?

• Migrate existing ROR app to GAE

  I have managed to run a basic rails app1 on App Engine using: http://gist.github.com/268192 So, on my basic app2, I install CE, which works fine on local machine. (communityengine.org) But, when I follow the same steps on my actual app2, where community_engine plugin is installed and all the gems are frozen, the app engine installer script asks for to over write various files like boot.rb, routes.rb, which I don't allow. So, as expected, when I publish the rails + ce app to GAE, it's not published and it also screws the local installation of CE on app2. So, the problem is obvious, CE uses ActiveRecord, and GAE uses DataMapper. So, my question can also be rephrased as: Can we migrate an existing ROR App using Active Record to GAE which uses DataMapper? PS: This is my first project on ROR and GAE.

• Unable to send email on production server with ASP.NET MVC

  I have a simple ASP.NET MVC application with a contact page. In my development machine (local) I can send successfully emails (I specify host and credentials), but on the production server this doesn't work and I get this error: System.Net.Mail.SmtpFailedRecipientException: Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or not local at System.Net.Mail.SmtpTransport.SendMail... The server is in my LAN (the mail server too). I tried with multiple accounts but I have errors every time. Credentials for the account are provided at runtime with smtp.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password"); Any idea? • System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement not working on the server

  I am using System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement to find the logged-in user's AD entry. It is working great in the VS2008 WebDev server on developers machines. But when we installed the code on the development server (windows server 2008), we get an access error. Both the developer's machine and the development server are members of the same domain. We have Impersonation turned on, so we are connecting to AD with the same user credentials. What are we missing here? Why is it working on the developer's machine, but not the development server? The actual exception that we were receiving was "An operations error occurred".

• Ways to polling server status

  Hi guys, I am try to create a JSP page that will show all the status in a group of local servers. Currently I create a schedule class that will constantly poll to check the status of the server with 30 second interval, with 5 second delay to wait for each server reply, and provide the JSP page with the information. However I find this way to be not accurate as it will take some time before the information of the schedule class to be updated. Do you guys have a better way to check the status of several server within a local network?

  Hello, I am getting an error while trying to upload images on an Ubuntu machine that's running Rails 2.3.4, Ruby 1.8.6 using attachment_fu with image science. FreeImage exception for type ???: IPTC: Invalid key 'Tag 0x025C' The error seems to point to this line in the image_science_processor in the attachment_fu plugin: def with_image(file, &block) ::ImageScience.with_image file, &block end My initial thoughts are that it has something to do with meta tags and the images and maybe free image. I don't actually see this error on my dev machine - Mac Snow Leopard, Rails 2.3.5, Ruby 1.8.7. Before I start messing versions on the production boxes, has anyone else encountered this issue and have an idea to fix it? THANKS!!!!

  Hi All, I am trying to set up a Approval workflow when item created and item updated event on a list and then update the approval status as workflow complete. Now when I create a new Item the workflow kicks off as expected. When I edit the same item and approve the item new workflow get started as the item get edit. It seems to be workflow falls in loop if I se an Approval workflow on new item created and Item Edit events. I Google for it and I found that Microsoft has come up with hotfix to overcome this issue. I have installed it on my machine but still the problem persist. Is there are any prerequisites needed for this ? or any other service pack or specific version of service pack needs be installed on machine to make this hotfix running. • sql server 2008 express one row write problem

  Hi everyone, I have the most bizarre problem(at least it is bizarre to me) with MSSQL Server Express 2008. The problem is the following: On the development machine I use MS SQL Server 2008 Enterprise....I get some data from a WCF service and write that data to the db (simple as it can be)....I should point out however that the writing, it is done in a separate thread. BUt, anyway no problems during development...all the data is there. Then I set everything up(connection strings .\SQLEXPRESS, other settings) build in Release and copy that to a test machine that has MS SQL Server Express installed(because my application is a client application and it should work with Express)...I run the program....the program retrieves the data from the service...and when I look at the database...I'm in for a big suprise...there's only one row written(the first row received from the WCF service). I would really appreciate any help...I'm in a deadlock here. Thanks in advance. Bojan
