• Using the ASP.NET Membership API with SQL Server / SQL Azure: The new &ldquo;System.Web.Providers&rdquo; namespace

  The Membership API came in .NET 2.0 and was a huge enhancement in building web applications with users, managing roles, permissions etc.,  The Membership API by default uses SQL Express and until Visual Studio 2008, it was available only through the ASP.NET Configuration manager screen (Website – ASP.NET Configuration) or (Project – ASP.NET Configuration) and for every application, one has to manually visit this place to start using the Security and other settings.  Upon doing that the default SQL Express database aspnet.mdf is created to store all the user profiles. Starting Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0, the Default Website template includes the Membership API controls as a part of the page i.e. When you create a “File – New – ASP.NET Web Application” or an “ASP.NET MVC Application”, by default the Login/Register controls are enabled in the MasterPage and they are termed under “ApplicationServices” setting in the web.config file with connection string pointed to the SQL Express database. In fact, when you run the default website and click on “Logon” –> “Register”, and enter the details for registration and click “Register”, that is the time the aspnet.mdf file is created with the tables for Users, Roles, UsersInRoles, Profile etc., Now, this uses the default SQL Express database within the App_Data folder.  If you want to move your Membership information to some other database such as SQL Server, SQL CE or SQL Azure, you need to manually run the aspnet_regsql command and specify the destination database name. This would create all the Tables, Procedures and Views required to handle the Membership information.  Thereafter you can change the connection string for “ApplicationServices” to point to the database where you had run all the scripts. Now, enter “System.Web.Providers” Alpha. This is available as a part of the NuGet package library.  Scott Hanselman has a neat post describing the steps required to get it up and running as well as doing the basic changes  at http://www.hanselman.com/blog/IntroducingSystemWebProvidersASPNETUniversalProvidersForSessionMembershipRolesAndUserProfileOnSQLCompactAndSQLAzure.aspx Pretty much, it covers what the new System.Web.Providers do. One thing I wanted to clarify is that, the new “System.Web.Providers” add a lot of new settings which are also marked as the defaults, in the web.config.  Even now, they use SQL Express as the default database.  But, if you change the connection string for “DefaultConnection” under connectionStrings to point to your SQL Server or SQL Azure, Membership API would now be able to create all the tables, procedures and views at the destination specified (i.e. SQL Server or SQL Azure). In my case, I modified the DefaultConneciton to point to my SQL Azure database.  Next, I hit F5 to run the application.  The default view loads.  I clicked on “LogOn” and then “Register” since I knew there are no tables/users as of then.  One thing to note is that, I had put “NewDB” as the database name in the connection string that points to SQL Azure.  NewDB wasn’t existing and I would assume it would be created before the tables/views/procedures for Membership are created. Once I clicked on the “Register” to register my first username, it took a while and then registered as well as logged in me in.  Also, I went to the SQL Azure Management Portal and verified that there exists “NewDB” which has just been created I could also connect to the SQL Azure database “NewDB” from Management Studio and found that the tables now don’t have the aspnet_ prefix.  The tables were simply Users, Roles, UsersInRoles, Profiles etc., So, with a few clicks and configuration change, I could actually set up the user base for my application on SQL Azure and even make the SessionState, Roles, Profiles being stored in SQL Azure database. The new System.Web.Proivders also required MARS (MultipleActiveResultSets=true) setting since it uses Entity Framework for the DAL operations.  Also, the “Project – ASP.NET Configuration” screen can be used to further create/manage users/roles etc., although the data is stored on the remote database. With that, a long pending request from the community to have the ability to configure and use remote databases for Application users management without having to run the scripts from SQL Express is fulfilled. • Collision detection with multiple polygons simultaneously

  I've written a collision system which detects/resolves collisions between a rectangular player and a convex polygon world using the Separating Axis Theorem. This scheme works fine when the player is colliding with a single polygon, but when I try to create a level made up of combinations of these shapes, the player gets "stuck" between shapes when trying to move from one polygon to the other. The reason for this seems to be that collisions are detected after the player has been pushed through the shape by its movement or gravity. When the system resolves the collision, it resolves them in an order that doesn't make sense (for example, when the player is moving from one flat rectangle to another, gravity pushes them below the ground, but the collision with the left hand side of the second block is resolved before the collision with the top of the block, meaning the player is pushed back left before being pushed back up). Other similar posts have resolved this problem by having a strict rule on which axes to resolve first. For example, always resolve the collision on the y axis, then if the object is still colliding with things, resolve on the x axis. This solution only works in the case of a completely axis oriented box world, and doesn't solve the problem if the player is stuck moving along a series of angled shapes or sliding down a wall. Does any one have any ideas of how I could alter my collision system to prevent these situations from happening?

• Connecting a limited user to win server 2003 through LogMeIn

  Logmein support can't help me, maybe someone here can. I have a user on a windows 2003 server (non administrator). When I first created him and tried to connect through remote desktop I got the error "The local policy of the system does not permit you to logon interactively." I looked up the error and saw that this user was not a member of the Remote Desktop Users group. I added him to the group and was able to remote desktop in just fine. Then I tried to connect this user to the server through LogMeIn (pro trial version). I got the same error as when the user was not a part of the Remote Desktop Users group ("The local policy of the system does not permit you to logon interactively."). Can anyone tell me any other groups the user must be a member of in order to be allowed access through LogMeIn? I would image this is a common requirement logmein support seemed to have no idea.

• Configure mod_wsgi WSGIScriptAlias with mod_rewrite

  I want to redirect ex.com to www.ex.com but I still want www.ex.com/ to point to my app.wsgi without it showing up in the url. When I use the conf below and I go to ex.com, I get a 404 error saying can't find www.ex.com/app.wsgi/ If I change the WSGIScriptAlias / /var/www/vhosts/ex/app.wsgi to WSGIScriptAlias /app.wsgi /var/www/vhosts/ex/app.wsgi Then all my url look like www.ex.com/app.wsgi/blabla/... • SYS2 Scripts Updated – Scripts to monitor database backup, database space usage and memory grants now available

  I’ve just released three new scripts of my “sys2” script collection that can be found on CodePlex: Project Page: http://sys2dmvs.codeplex.com/ Source Code Download: http://sys2dmvs.codeplex.com/SourceControl/changeset/view/57732 The three new scripts are the following sys2.database_backup_info.sql sys2.query_memory_grants.sql sys2.stp_get_databases_space_used_info.sql Here’s some more details: database_backup_info This script has been made to quickly check if and when backup was done. It will report the last full, differential and log backup date and time for each database. Along with these information you’ll also get some additional metadata that shows if a database is a read-only database and its recovery model: By default it will check only the last seven days, but you can change this value just specifying how many days back you want to check. To analyze the last seven days, and list only the database with FULL recovery model without a log backup select * from sys2.databases_backup_info(default) where recovery_model = 3 and log_backup = 0 To analyze the last fifteen days, and list only the database with FULL recovery model with a differential backup select * from sys2.databases_backup_info(15) where recovery_model = 3 and diff_backup = 1 I just love this script, I use it every time I need to check that backups are not too old and that t-log backup are correctly scheduled. query_memory_grants This is just a wrapper around sys.dm_exec_query_memory_grants that enriches the default result set with the text of the query for which memory has been granted or is waiting for a memory grant and, optionally, its execution plan stp_get_databases_space_used_info This is a stored procedure that list all the available databases and for each one the overall size, the used space within that size, the maximum size it may reach and the auto grow options. This is another script I use every day in order to be able to monitor, track and forecast database space usage. As usual feedbacks and suggestions are more than welcome!

• Why are my uWSGI processes dying immediately?

  I'm using Supervisor and the uWSGI Emperor mode. When I set limit-as to 512 (MB), workers die instantly (respawn, die, respawn, die, every 3/4 of a second or so): [uwsgi] workers = 4 threads = 40 limit-as = 512 harakiri = 20 max-requests = 1600 ... non-performance/memory/processor-related settings ommitted But, if I change limit-as to: [uwsgi] workers = 4 threads = 40 limit-as = 1024 harakiri = 20 max-requests = 1600 ... non-performance/memory/processor-related settings ommitted and restart uwsgi, the problem is gone immediately. In order to put a sham in this, I've modified the setting back to 512, restarted again, and the problem is back immediately. Notes: My app is a simple Django app without much additional Python setup during start-up time.

One ISP was criticized for it's low security conditions, and when i heard this i started to think: If one gets an unauthorized access to the mainframe computer / internal network of the ISP, then wouldn't he be able to sniff all the traffic ? Because the ISP is providing the internet connection for the user so all traffic that sends and transmits a user travels via the ISP, right ? What security solutions (talking about computer security) are being implemented by other ISP in order to protect themselves and their users ? If all the connections are being sent via a special computer, how secure it is and how can be we sure that it's really safe ? And what kind of computers are those who serve as backbones for the ISP ? • Fixing my SQL Directory NTFS ACLS

  I run my development server by boot to VHD (Windows Server 2008 R2 x64).  In that instance, I also have an attached VHD (I attach via script at boot up time using Task Scheduler).  That VHD I have my SQL instances installed. So, the other day, acting hasty, I chmod my ACLS – wow, what a day after that. • Trouble configuring firewall for FTP on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Ok, I'm having the exact same problem as in this question http://serverfault.com/questions/59635/outbound-ftp-on-server-2008-r2-stalls but the accepted answer didn't help me much... I followed the third step of this http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/309/configuring-ftp-firewall-settings/ guide in order to configure my firewall for FTP, and I am able to authenticate, however, the data channel doesn't seem to be passing through the firewall. If I disable the firewall, everything works fine. Hope someone can help me, as this is really starting to annoy me. Best regards, x3ro

• Stop a runaway launchd process on OS X Leopard

  I created a launchd .plist file to in order to have a python script run every hour. I ended up editing and later deleting the .plist file ( in /Library/LaunchDaemons )... but somehow launchd is still trying to run the script.. The file that the original .plist was calling is also no longer present ( it was in /usr/bin ).. Now every 10 seconds launchd is still attempting to run the script, fails, and respawns... I tried fixing this with Lingon.... to no avail.. Is there a way to kill this process for good? I tried logging out and restarting as well... Machine is running 10.5.8

  The Apache2 server and PHP version seem to be in order, but when I launch the CRM installer at http://localhost/<CRM dir>/install.php The wizard says I need a minimum of PHP 5.1 and preferably PHP 5.2.x. The thing is, I am running PHP 5.2.8, and I know this from running php --version Plus, I spent a bunch of time learning how and (I thought, successfully) compiling PHP 5.2.8. It is quite likely I screwed up and don't have some libraries I need, but I'm not sure where to look first. Thanks in advance.

  So, I have previously installed Splunk 3.x behind a reverse proxy and downloaded the latest version (4.0.6 at time of typing) expecting it to be as easy to use as before. Sadly this was not the case. There appears to be some elements which are not being translated correctly through the reverse proxy, causing Splunk to fail. • WCF RIA Services DomainContext Abstraction Strategies–Say That 10 Times!

  The DomainContext available with WCF RIA Services provides a lot of functionality that can help track object state and handle making calls from a Silverlight client to a DomainService. One of the questions I get quite often in our Silverlight training classes (and see often in various forums and other areas) is how the DomainContext can be abstracted out of ViewModel classes when using the MVVM pattern in Silverlight applications. It’s not something that’s super obvious at first especially if you don’t work with delegates a lot, but it can definitely be done. There are various techniques and strategies that can be used but I thought I’d share some of the core techniques I find useful. To start, let’s assume you have the following ViewModel class (this is from my Silverlight Firestarter talk available to watch online here if you’re interested in getting started with WCF RIA Services): public class AdminViewModel : ViewModelBase { BookClubContext _Context = new BookClubContext(); public AdminViewModel() { if (!DesignerProperties.IsInDesignTool) { LoadBooks(); } } private void LoadBooks() { _Context.Load(_Context.GetBooksQuery(), LoadBooksCallback, null); } private void LoadBooksCallback(LoadOperation<Book> books) { Books = new ObservableCollection<Book>(books.Entities); } } Notice that BookClubContext is being used directly in the ViewModel class. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but if other ViewModel objects need to load books then code would be duplicated across classes. Plus, the ViewModel has direct knowledge of how to load data and I like to make it more loosely-coupled. To do this I create what I call a “Service Agent” class. This class is responsible for getting data from the DomainService and returning it to a ViewModel. It only knows how to get and return data but doesn’t know how data should be stored and isn’t used with data binding operations. An example of a simple ServiceAgent class is shown next. Notice that I’m using the Action<T> delegate to handle callbacks from the ServiceAgent to the ViewModel object. Because LoadBooks accepts an Action<ObservableCollection<Book>>, the callback method in the ViewModel must accept ObservableCollection<Book> as a parameter. There are certainly other techniques and strategies that can be used, but the code shown here provides an introductory look at the topic that should help get you started abstracting the DomainContext out of your ViewModel classes when using WCF RIA Services in Silverlight applications.

  I have mailserver configure using dovecot+postfix+mysql and it was runnig fine in the server(Ubuntu Server). But during last week it stopped working correctly. It doesn't send email. When I try to telnet localhost smtp I'm connecting successfully but when I do mail from:<[email protected]> and hit Enter it hangs on, nothing happen. Having reviewed /var/log/mail.log file I've found out that probably(99%) the problem is on postfix when it is trying to connect to MySQL server. If you see the log file given below you can see that it says Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2). • How SQL Server 2014 impacts Red Gate’s SQL Compare

  SQL Compare 10.7 successfully connects to SQL Server 2014, but it doesn’t yet cover the SQL Server 2014 features which would require us to make major changes to SQL Compare to support. In this post I’m going to talk about the SQL Server 2014 features we’ve already begun supporting, and which ones we’re working on for the next release of SQL Compare (v11). From SQL Compare’s perspective, the new memory-optimized table functionality (some might know it as ‘Hekaton’) has been the most important change. It can’t be described as its own object type, but the new functionality is split across two existing object types (three if you count indexes), as it also comes with native stored procedures and inline indexes. Along with connectivity support, the SQL Compare team has already implemented the first part of the puzzle – inline specification of indexes. These are essential for memory-optimized tables because it’s not possible to alter the memory optimized table’s structure, and so indexes can’t be added after the fact without dropping the table. Books Online  shows this in more detail in the table_index and column_index clauses of http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms174979(v=sql.120).aspx. SQL Compare 10.7 currently supports reading the new inline index specification from script folders and source control repositories, and will write out inline indexes where it’s necessary to do so (i.e. in UDDTs or when attempting to write projects compatible with the SSDT database project format). However, memory-optimized tables themselves are not yet supported in 10.7. The team is actively working on making them available in the v11 release with full support later in the year, and in a beta version before that. Fortunately, SQL Compare already has some ways of handling tables that have to be dropped and created rather than altered, which are being adapted to handle this new kind of table. Because it’s one of the largest new database engine features, there’s an equally large Books Online section on memory-optimized tables, but for us the most important parts of the documentation are the normal table features that are changed or unsupported and the new syntax found in the T-SQL reference pages. We are treating SQL Compare’s support of Natively Compiled Stored Procedures as a separate unit of work, which will be available in a subsequent beta and also feed into the v11 release. This new type of stored procedure is designed to work with memory-optimized tables to maintain the performance improvements gained by them – but you can still also access memory-optimized tables from normal stored procedures and ad-hoc queries. To us, they’re essentially a limited-syntax stored procedure with a few extra options in the create statement, embodied in the updated CREATE PROCEDURE documentation and with the detailed limitations. They should be easier to handle than memory-optimized tables simply because the handling of stored procedures is less sensitive to dropping the object than the handling of tables. However, both share an incompatibility with DDL triggers and Event Notifications which mean we’ll need to temporarily disable these during the specific deployment operations that involve them – don’t worry, we’ll supply a warning if this is the case so that you can check your auditing arrangements can handle the situation. There are also a handful of other improvements in SQL Server 2014 which affect SQL Compare and SQL Data Compare that are not connected to memory optimized tables. The largest of these are the improvements to columnstore indexes, with the capability to create clustered columnstore indexes and update columnstore tables through them – for more detail, take a look at the new syntax reference. There’s also a new index option for better compression of columnstores (COLUMNSTORE_ARCHIVE) and a new statistics option for incremental per-partition statistics, plus the 90 compatibility level is being retired. We’re planning to finish up these small clean-up features last, and be ready to release SQL Compare 11 with full SQL 2014 support early in Q3 this year. For a more thorough overview of what’s new in SQL Server 2014, Books Online’s What’s New section is a good place to start (although almost all the changes in this version are in the Database Engine).

• Visual Studio 2008 Crashes When Adding Custom Pipeline Components to Toolbox

  I have run into this issue trying to add custom pipeline component to toolbox. The only way (I know about) to add a custom pipeline component to a customized pipeline is using the visual designer. In order to do that you have to have components on toolbox. This was a bit frustrating. Google has brought one result which was exactly what I needed. One of the comments had another link, to the similar issue, but this time with a different title: Hotfix for BizTalk 2009 and Visual Studio 2008. I followed the link, installed hotfix, and it worked. Oh, yes, you have to reboot your machine for hotfix to work completely (this is where I spent some time pulling my hair out and asking why hotfix didn’t work?!). Once this is done, you are good to go. Among other things, this hotfix deals with BizTalk project references to each other and items not being updated (like distinguished fields in schemas project not reflected in orchestrations project). Here’s the full list: * The orchestrations in the referenced BizTalk project may show compiler warnings. * The changes that are made to the referenced BizTalk project are not propagated on to the referencing project. * When you edit the orchestrations of the referenced project, XLANG errors are thrown. These errors may disappear after the orchestrations are saved and recompiled. * After you deploy the referencing project, the local copies of the referenced project’s binaries are deleted. * After you deploy the referencing project, various errors or warnings occur in Orchestration Designer.

• How to gain accurate results with Painter's algorithm?

  A while ago I asked how to determine when a face is overlapping another. The advice was to use a Z-buffer. However, I cannot use a Z-buffer in my current project and hence I would like to use the Painter's algorithm. I have no good clue as to when a surface is behind or in front of another, though. I've tried numerous methods but they all fail in edge cases, or they fail even in general cases. This is a list of sorting methods I've tried so far: Distance to midpoint of each face Average distance to each vertex of each face Average z value of each vertex Higest z value of vertices of each face and draw those first Lowest z value of vertices of each face and draw those last The problem is that a face might have a closer distance but is still further away. All these methods seem unreliable. Edit: For example, in the following image the surface with the blue point as midpoint is painted over the surface with the red point as midpoint, because the blue point is closer. However, this is because the surface of the red point is larger and the midpoint is further away. The surface with the red point should be painted over the blue one, because it is closer, whilst the midpoint distance says the opposite. What exactly is used in the Painter's algorithm to determine the order in which objects should be drawn?
