• Is my method for avoiding dynamic_cast<> faster than dynamic_cast<> itself ?

  Hi, I was answering a question a few minutes ago and it raised to me another one: In one of my projects, I do some network message parsing. The messages are in the form of: [1 byte message type][2 bytes payload length][x bytes payload] The format and content of the payload are determined by the message type. I have a class hierarchy, based on a common class Message. To instanciate my messages, i have a static parsing method which gives back a Message* depending on the message type byte. Something like: Message* parse(const char* frame) { // This is sample code, in real life I obviously check that the buffer // is not NULL, and the size, and so on. switch(frame[0]) { case 0x01: return new FooMessage(); case 0x02: return new BarMessage(); } // Throw an exception here because the mesage type is unknown. } I sometimes need to access the methods of the subclasses. Since my network message handling must be fast, I decived to avoid dynamic_cast<> and I added a method to the base Message class that gives back the message type. Depending on this return value, I use a static_cast<> to the right child type instead. I did this mainly because I was told once that dynamic_cast<> was slow. However, I don't know exactly what it really does and how slow it is, thus, my method might be as just as slow (or slower) but far more complicated. What do you guys think of this design ? Is it common ? Is it really faster than using dynamic_cast<> ? Any detailed explanation of what happen under the hood when one use dynamic_cast<> is welcome !

In real code i get char* as a return of a function and i wish to print the character string for logging. However, NULL is also a valid return value of that function and so i am wondering if a null check is required before printing the character string? char* ptr=someFuncion(); // do i need the following if statement? if(ptr!=NULL) { printf("%s",ptr); } I just want to be sure that the output would be same i.e if ptr=NULL then output should be (null) on all platforms and compilers and the above code(without if statement) would not crash on any C standard compatible platform. • Suggestions on implementing an iPad magazine app

  I've been tasked with creating a magazine style app for iPad. Ideally it would look a little something like the Zinio app: http://www.zinio.com/ipad/ . This app is effectively a shell, allowing you to sample magazines (eg. read the first few pages) and select them for download. The magazines appear to have some sort of overlay, allowing you to interact with some things (eg. tap to watch a video). A few questions that come to mind: How would I go about delivering content to the user? In-app purchases aren't really an option, as some content will need to be delivered for free. Is it possible to download a package and make this available within the application? What format would be suitable for displaying the magazine? Sequential images, PDF, ebook? I'll need to have some form of interactivity. I guess I could have some form of lookup table, which would include information such as if the user taps on this page, within these coordinates, then launch this item. Anyone dealt with any similar issues?

• jQuery UI Rang Slider show divs based on selected range

  I have set up a range slider that should show/hide divs based on their range values - meaning if the range of the one specifies in the div falls into the selected range in the slider it should show - the others hide. Somehow it does not work correctly - if anybody could help that would be greatly appreciated. • Is it OK to use WPF assemblies in a web app?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 app targeting .NET 4 that needs to be able to resize images on the fly and write them to the response. I have code that does this and it works. I am using System.Drawing.dll. However, I want to enhance my code so that not only am I resizing the image, but I am dropping it from 24bpp down to 4bit grayscale. I could not, for the life of me, find code on how to do this with System.Drawing.dll. But I did find a bunch of WPF stuff. If anyone knows how to drop the bit depth without all this WPF stuff (which I barely understand, BTW) I would be thrilled to see that too.

  My job is the maintain one application which heavy use SQL server (MSSQL2005). Until now middle server stores TSQL codes in XML and send dynamic TSQL queries without using stored procs. As I am able change those XML queries I want to migrate most of my queries to stored procs. Question is folowing: Most of my queries have same Where conditions against one table Sample: Select ..... from .... where .... and (a.vrsta_id = @vrsta_id or @vrsta_id = 0) and (a.podvrsta_id = @podvrsta_id or @podvrsta_id = 0) and (a.podgrupa_2 = @podgrupa2_id or @podgrupa2_id = 0) and ( (a.id in (select art_id from osobina_veze where podosobina_id in (select ado from dbo.fn_ado_param_int(@podosobina)) group by art_id having count(art_id)= @podosobina_count )) or ('0' = @podosobina) ) They also have same where conditions on other table. How I should organize my code ? What is proper way ? Should I make table valued function that I will use in all queries or use #Temp tables and simple inner join my query to that each time when proc executing? or use #temp filed by table valued function ? or leave all queries with this large where clause and hope that index is going to do their jobs. or use WITH(statement)

• Is there a way to toggle bluetooth and/or wifi on and off programatically in iOS?

  I am looking for an easy way to toggle both bluetooth and wifi between on and off states on iOS 4.x devices (iPhone and iPad). I am constantly toggling these functions as I move between different locations and usage scenarios, and right now it takes multiple taps and visits to the Settings App. I am looking to create a simple App, that lives on Springboard, that I can just tap and it will turn off the wifi if it's on, and vice versa, then immediately quit. Similarly with an App for toggling bluetooth’s state. I have the developer SDK, and am comfortable in Xcode and with iOS development, so am happy to write the required Xcode to create the App. I am just at a loss as to which API, private or not, has the required functionality to simply toggle the state of these facilities. Because this is scratching a very personal itch, I have no intent to try and sell the App or get it up on the App store, so conforming with App guidelines on API usage is a non-issue. What I don’t want to do is jailbreak the devices, as I want to keep the core software as shipped. Can anyone point me at some sample code or more info on achieving this goal, as my Google-fu is letting me down, and if the information is out there for 4.x devices I just can’t find it.

• How do I add two alternating UITableViews to an existing UINavigationController view?

  I'm new to iPhone development and I am writing an iPhone app that needs two different table views, which are selectable using a button bar or tab bar. These table views are both the same size, but only cover about two thirds of the screen from the bottom up. The top portion of the screen remains the same when either of these tables is displayed. I'd also like to animate (flip) these views when the user selects one or the other. The view that these two tables will be displayed on is the detail view of my app where the user has already selected an item from the primary screen's table. I'm using a UINavigationController to manage the primary and detail views and I have this working. I also have the first of these two detail tables working as part of my detail view, but I think it makes more sense to isolate the code for these two tables and not duplicate all of the code for the part of the detail view that doesn't change. I don't really care how these two table views are created (either in code or via IB). I've tried several things and I can't seem to figure it out. Any help or ideas (with sample code) would be greatly appreciated!

  I have an XML document with companies listed in it. I want to create a link with XSLT that contains the <link> child of the next node. Sorry if this is confusing..here is some sample XML of what i'm trying to obtain: <portfolio> <company> <name>Dano Industries</name> <link>dano.xml</link> </company> <company> <name>Mike and Co.</name> <link>mike.xml</link> </company> <company> <name>Steve Inc.</name> <link>steve.xml</link> </company> </portfolio> I want two links, "BACK" and "NEXT". While currently on mike.xml, I want BACK to link to "dano.xml" and NEXT linked to "steve.xml"...etc..and have it dynamically change when on a different page based on the nodes around it. I want to do this because I may add and change the list as I go along, so I don't want to have to manually re-link everything. How can I obtain this? • How can I map stored procedure result into a custom class with linq-to-sql?

  I have a stored procedure that returns a result set (4 columns x n Rows). The data is based on multiple tables within my database and provides a summary for each department within a corporate. Here is sample: usp_GetDepartmentSummary DeptName EmployeeCount Male Female HR 12 5 7 etc... I am using linq-to-sql to retrieve data from my database (nb - have to use sproc as it is something I have inherited). I would like to call the above sproc and map into a department class: public class Department { public string DeptName {get; set;} public int EmployeeCount {get; set;} public int MaleCount {get; set;} public int FemaleCount {get; set;} } In VS2008, I can drag and drop my sproc onto the methods pane of the linq-to-sql designer. When I examine the designer.cs the return type for this sproc is defined as: ISingleResult<usp_GetDepartmentSummaryResult> What I would like to do is amend this somehow so that it returns a Department type so that I can pass the results of the sproc as a strongly typed view: <% foreach (var dept in Model) { %> <ul> <li class="deptname"><%= dept.DeptName %></li> <li class="deptname"><%= dept.EmployeeCount %></li> etc... Any ideas how to achieve this? NB - I have tried amending the designer.cs and dbml xml file directly but with limited success.   Hi all, I've seen many articles about how to put together Agile RFP's and negotiating agile contracts, but how about if you're responding to a more traditional RFP? Any advice on how to meet the requirements of the RFP while still presenting an agile approach? A lot of these traditional RFP's request specific technical implementations, timelines, and costs, while also requesting exact details about milestones and how the technical solutions will be implemented. While I'm sure in traditional waterfall it's normal to pretend that these things are facts, it seems wrong to commit to something like this if you're an agile organization just to get through the initial screening process. What methods have you used to respond to more traditional RFP's? Here's a sample one grabbed from google, http://www.investtoronto.ca/documents/rfp-web-development.pdf Particularly, "3. A detailed work plan outlining how they expect to achieve the four deliverables within the timeframe outlined. Plan for additional phases of development." and "8. • Using PLINQ to calculate and update values within the enclosure does not work

  I recently needed to do a running total on a report. Where for each group, I order the rows and then calculate the running total based on the previous rows within the group. Aha! I thought, a perfect use case for PLINQ! However, when I wrote up the code, I got some strange behavior. The values I was modifying showed as being modified when stepping through the debugger, but when they were accessed they were always zero.   I'm working on a bit of code and I'm trying to optimize it as much as possible, basically get it running under a certain time limit. But I've also been reading about SIMD and SSE2 and things along that nature. So my question is, how do I store the variables (i,j,k) in registers so that they can be accessed faster by the CPU? • XSL transformation generating output from other nodes

  I have the following XSL template: <xsl:template match="SOAP-ENV:Body/*[local-name()='Publisher']"> <html> <xsl:call-template name="body" /> </html> </xsl:template> The previous template generates the output I want, it's generating the tags containing the output generated by the "body" template. The issue I'm having is that before the opening tag I'm getting text output from a previous node. Not sure why this is happening since I'm not selecting these other nodes. For example: <SOAP-ENV:Header> <!-- Many child nodes here--> </SOAP-ENV:Header> <SOAP-ENV:Body> <publishParty:Publisher> <!-- Many child nodes here--> </publishParty:Publisher> </SOAP-ENV:Body> Given the previous sample XML fragment, my output would contain what I would expect of formatting the Publisher element, but I'm also getting the text nodes of the children of the SOAP-ENV:Header node. Any ideas? Thanks!

• How do I send text to a UITextView?

  I'm new to iphone development. I'm a VB programmer who is trying to convert a VB application to an ipad app. I need some help with sending text to a UITextView. I want to first have a UIPickerView and then once the user hits a UIButton, a UITextView appears and the text is then generated by my source code code, line by line. The code would constantly be concatenating strings to the text. It would sort of go like this-- 1) User makes selections with UIPickerView. 2) User then hits UIButton. 3) UIPickerView is replaced on the screen with a UITextView. 4) The code does stuff. 5) The code adds the 1st line of text into the UITextView. 6) The code does more stuff. 7) The code then adds the 2nd line of text into the UITextView, retaining the 1st line that was already there. Steps 6 and 7 are repeated until the code is done. Does anyone know of any examples of this that I could look at? I am mostly interested in finding something like a youtube video, a webpage that explains the code or even a good book that covers this particular topic. I am finding that the sample codes that Apple has on this site goes over my head. In fact, I could probably benefit from a good book. But, I am looking for one that I would already know covers this particular topic, since it is so essential to the app that I am trying to build.

• Action property of interface type

  Hi, guys. With my understading, the nature of a Action is that properties can be pushed w/ request parameter values. And, one wonderful feature is that Struts2 allows you to directly populate parameter values against Class type property ;) Assuming there exists a Action and property class as below, class Action extends ActionSupport { User user; @Action(value="hello" {@result=(.......)}) public void execute() { ........ } ..... public void setUser(User user) { this.user = user; } public User getUser() { return this.user; } } class User { String name; ..... public void setName(String name) { this.name = name; } public String getName() { return this.name; } } you could populate User class property by doing like this. http://...../hello.action?user.name=John or via jsp page Then, I realize that there are actually people make an Action property as a Interface type. My question is what is the reason behind this. If there is a sample code demonstrating it will be great. Thanks in advance!

• Twitter O-Auth Callback url

  I am having a problem with Twitter's oauth authentication and using a callback url. I am coding in php and using the sample code referenced by the twitter wiki, http://github.com/abraham/twitteroauth I got that code, and tried a simple test and it worked nicely. However I want to programatically specify the callback url, and the example did not support that. So I quickly modified the getRequestToken() method to take in a parameter and now it looks like this: function getRequestToken($params = array()) { $r = $this->oAuthRequest($this->requestTokenURL(), $params); $token = $this->oAuthParseResponse($r); $this->token = new OAuthConsumer($token['oauth_token'], $token['oauth_token_secret']); return $token; } and my call looks like this $tok = $to->getRequestToken(array('oauth_callback' => 'http://127.0.0.1/twitter_prompt/index.php')); This is the only change I made, and the redirect works like a charm, however I am getting an error when I then try and use my newly granted access to try and make a call. I get a "Could not authenticate you" error. Also the application never actually gets added to the users authorized connections. Now I read the specs and I thought all I had to do was specify the parameter when getting the request token. Could someone a little more seasoned in oauth and twitter possibly give me a hand? • Silverlight Data Binding for Collection in Stack Panel

  I'm new to Silverlight, so I don't have a complete grasp of all the controls at my disposal. What I would like to do is use databinding and a view model to maintain a collection of items. Here is some mock code for what I'd like to do: Model public class MyItem { public string DisplayText { get; set; } public bool Enabled { get; set; } } ViewModel public class MyViewModel : INotifyPropertyChanged { private ObservableCollection<MyItem> _myItems = new ObservableCollection<MyItem>(); public ObservableCollection<MyItem> MyItems { get { return _myItems; } set { _myItems = value NotifyPropertyChanged(this, "MyItems"); } } } View <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <StackPanel ItemsSource="{Binding MyItems}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <CheckBox "{Binding Enabled, Mode=TwoWay}"></CheckBox> <TextBlock Text="{Binding DisplayText, Mode=TwoWay}" /> </StackPanel> </StackPanel> </Grid> So my end goal would be that every time I add another MyItem to the MyItems collection it would create a new StackPanel with checkbox and textblock. I don't have to use a stack panel but just thought I'd use that for this sample.

• Unable to change background colour for JOptionPane

  Hi I have created sample progeam which will give same look and feel of a confirm dialog and set the background colour as red. But I donot know what is the problem that my background colour of option is displayed as the default colour but not red. also i need same look and feel of confirm dialog across all platforms.
