• Compiling external C++ library (Octave) for iPhone (Fortran compiler missing?)

  A friend of mine asked me if it would be possible to port the Octave project to the iPhone. I haven't compiled an external package for an iPhone project before, so I downloaded the source code, and then used some scripts found on a couple of different Web sites (one, two) to try and build the libraries. However, when I try either of these scripts (which are nearly identical), they eventually die during the configure phase with the following error output: [...snip checks...] checking whether we are using the GNU Fortran 77 compiler... no checking whether accepts -g... no checking how to get verbose linking output from ... configure: WARNING: compilation failed checking for Fortran 77 libraries of ... rm: conftest.dSYM: is a directory checking for dummy main to link with Fortran 77 libraries... rm: conftest.dSYM: is a directory none checking for Fortran 77 name-mangling scheme... configure: error: cannot compile a simple Fortran program See `config.log' for more details. • Why can't the Adobe Flash player send key strokes it doesn't handle to the browse in which it is run

  I'm a heavy web user that uses the address bar constantly while browsing the web. I often use Ctrl + T to open a new tab or Ctrl + D to move focus to the address bar so it is very annoying that these shortcut keys do not work when a Flash object has focus on the active browser tab. I would happily give up all keyboard handling in the Flash Player in exchange for having keystrokes sent to the browser. In fact, as someone who has worked in software development for over 15 years it is hard to believe that Flash doesn't pass common browser shortcut keys to the browser or have an option to do so. So my question is this: Am I missing some option, some Flash shortcut key or some Firefox add-on that will alleviate my suffering?

• Makefile for DOS/Windows and Cygwin

  I need to have a makefile work under DOS (Windows) and Cygwin. I having problems with the makefile detecting the OS correctly and setting appropriate variables. The objective is to set variables for the following commands, then invoke the commands in rules using the variables: Delete file: rm in Cygwin, del in DOS. Remove directory: rmdir (different parameters in Cygwin and DOS) Copy file: cp in Cygwin, copy in DOS. Testing for file existance: test in Cygwin, IF EXIST in DOS. Listing contents of a file: cat in Cygwin, type in DOS. • Recommendations for screen-capture tool that retains menus and mouse pointer

  There are several screen capture tool questions already on this site, but I think I have a slight tweak to the usual. I'd like a handy screen capture utility that can: Run in Windows 7 Capture a sub-region of the screen Show the current state of the mouse cursor and any active menus I'd like to use it for writing docs that refer to specific application menu items. I like the built-in snipping tool in Windows 7, but the act of using it dismisses my menus, and it doesn't get the mouse cursor either. Do any such tools exist? EDIT: Ahh, I wasn't familiar with the "delayed capture" options of these tools, but they all seem to fit the bill. Thanks!

• In ufw is there any way to disable logging for a particular rule?

  I am using UFW with a default logging policy of "low". I would like to keep this logging on for the default deny action, but disable it for a particular IP address only. So I'd like to create one particular new rule that doesn't have logging. Is there a way to achieve this? • Help make sense of a KillDisk error/log

  I have a hard drive that I've been trying to reformat. I tried reformatting it in the windows XP and 7 installers, and in an Ubuntu live cd with gparted. I tried using dd to 'zero' the drive as well with no success. Finally I ran across KillDisk after a search. • Help replacing old Windows 2003 SBS DC with a Win2008 Standard Edition DC

  Objective: Trying to replace a Windows 2003 SBS domain controller with a windows server 2008 Standard Edition Domain Controller. What I did: used ADPREP. Then all user accounts and OUs are successfully replicated into the 2008 server. I have also managed to transfer all the DC roles (operations master,schema,pdc) into the Server 2008. I have also used NETDOM QUERY FSMO . It displayed that all the roles transferred to the 2008 server. Problem: When I am trying to demote the windows 2003 SBS server using DCPROMO, the message is “No other Active Directory for this domain can be contacted”. I also tried shutting down the 2003 server. Users can login into the domain but they have trouble finding SHARED folders. Can someone help me find out what I did wrong ? Need a little push in the right direction here. Thank you very much ?

• Changing FileNames using RegEx and Recursion

  Hello I'm trying to rename files that my program lists as having "illegal characters" for a SharePoint file importation. The illegal characters I am referring to are: ~ # % & * {} / \ | : < ? - "" What i'm trying to do is recurse through the drive, gather up a list of filenames and then through Regular Expressions, pick out file names from a List and try to replace the invalid characters in the actual filenames themselves. Anybody have any idea how to do this? • Disable DirectDraw, but still have Direct3D?

  I have a Windows XP SP3 machine, with up-to-date patches. It has DirectX 9.0c, version number 4.09.00.0904. Can I disable DirectDraw, but have Direct3D still active? I read the Wikipedia articles about DirectDraw and Direct3D, but do not know if I understand them correctly: That is, it contains many commands for 3D rendering; however, since version 8, Direct3D has superseded the old DirectDraw framework and also taken responsibility for the rendering of 2D graphics. Does that mean DirectDraw is now a part of Direct3D? Because I cannot disable DirectDraw without disabling Direct3D, but it works the other way around.

• What's the simplest configuration of SVN on a Windows Server to avoid plain text password storage?

  I have an SVN 1.6 server running on a Windows Server 2003 machine, served via CollabNet's svnserve running as a service (using the svn protocol). I would like to avoid storing passwords in plain text on the server. Unfortunately, the default configuration and SASL with DIGEST-MD5 both require plain text password storage. What is the simplest possible way to avoid storing passwords in plain text? My constraints are: Path-based access control to the SVN repository needs to be possible (currently I can use an authz file). As far as I know, this is more-or-less independent of the authentication method. Active directory is available, but it's not just domain-connected windows machines that need to authenticate: workgroup PCs, Linux PCs and software that uses PySVN to perform SVN operations all need to be able to access the repositories. Upgrading the SVN server is feasible, as is installing additional software.

• Base Href vs. .htaccess RewriteBase

  Normally I use <base href="http://domain.com/" /><!--[if ie]></base><![endif]--> I haven't tried much with RewriteBase, I normally get confused and keep changing it till it works. Which method would be best, I obviously find the best solution because the links stay the same so that no links are broken most of the time when attaching a css file, e.g. http://domain.com/css/main.css It just always stay the same when accessing to sub-directories. Although, when I don't use the tag, and I access to a sub directory, it breaks the css links when I use <link href="css/main.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> As my PHP documents would include the header, <?php include("include/global_header.php"); ?> If I do that without the I would have to use: <link href="../css/main.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> Which can break when accessing to a sub-directory. So... does the RewriteBase work the same as the ? Your thoughts.

• Vim's relativenumber setting and multiple buffers

  I like the relative number setting. I'm refactoring code at the moment (translation: explodicating 5 year old terrible methods and replacing them with nice code) and I find it useful to have the setting active on files as I open them I frequently either open multiple buffers or use a client/server vim to contain all my open buffers/files and have noticed that the relative number only seems to apply to the first buffer (and not the remaining buffers when I have set rnu in my .vimrc file.) Is it expected behaviour for rnu to only initially apply to the first buffer until you manually set it?

• jQuery Accordion Plugin: removeClass('selected')

  I am using the Accordion menu to filter a data table. The menu contains two filters, with multiple options under each. You can only have ONE filter selected at a time. If you click between the two options under the first filter, the style class, 'selected' is added and removed without a problem. If you click an option under the second filter though, it DOESN'T remove the 'selected' class from the first filter. Any help would be appreciated. • Installing Gtk2 on portable strawberry

  I downloaded "strawberry-perl-5.12.2.0-portable" and "gtk+-bundle_2.22.1-20101227_win32". I extracted strawberry-perl in some directory and there I put gtk folder with gtk stuff. In portableshell.bat I changed Path env and added: "%drivep%\gtk\bin;%drivep%\gtk\lib;". Don't ask me why I added lib directory, I saw that some guy added it in some website. • How do I build BugTrap?

  I am trying to build the Itellesoft BugTrap source using Visual Studio 2008. I have downloaded and unziped the BugTrap source and the zlib source. I navigated down to ./BugTrap/Win32/BugTrap and opened BugTrap.sln (suggest by the author here). I used Build-Build Solution and the build failed with a compiler error: fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'zip.h': No such file or directory I opened the project properties and added the path to the zlib-vc/zlib/include folder to the list of "Additional Include Directories" and tried to build again. The second build attempt failed with a linker error: fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'zlibSD.lib' I opened the zlib project and built the source. The zlib build succeeded. However, the bin directory does not contain a zlibSD.lib. The closest file in name is zlibMSD.lib. This poster on CodeProject seemed to have the same problem I did. But there is no resolution posted. Hopefully someone out there has experience building this project and can point me in the right direction, I've played with the binary distribution and it seems really slick.

• Common JNDI resources in Tomcat

  Hi, I’m running a couple of servlet applications in Tomcat (5.5). All of the servlets use a common factory resource that is shared out using JNDI. At the moment, I can get everything working by including the factory resource as a GlobalNamingResource in the /conf/server.xml file, and then having each servlet’s META-INF/context.xml file include a ResourceLink to the resource. Snippets from the XML files are included below. NOTE: I’m not that familiar with tomcat, so I’m not saying that this is a good configuration!!! However, I now want to be able install these servlets into multiple tomcat instances automatically using an RPM. The RPM will firstly copy the WARs to the webapps directory, and the jars for the factory into the common/lib directory (which is fine). But it will also need to make sure that the factory resource is included as a resource for all of the servlets. What is the best way add the resource globally? I’m not too keen on writing a script that goes into the server.xml file and adds in the resource that way. Is there any way for me to add in multiple server.xml files so that I can write a new server-app.xml file and it will concatenate my settings to server.xml? Or, better still to add this JNDI resource to all the servlets without using server.xml at all? p.s. Restarting the server will not be an issue, so I don’t mind if the changes don’t get picked up automatically. • MSBuild "Wrapper" fails while VS2010 "Pure" compile succeeds for MFC application in CruiseControl.NE

  The Overview I am working on a Continuous Integration build of a MFC appliction via CruiseControl.net and VS2010. When building my .sln, a "Visual Studio" CCNet task (devenv) works, but a wrapper MSBuild script run via the CCNet MSBuild task fails with errors like: error RC1015: cannot open include file 'winres.h'.. error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afxwin.h': No such file or directory error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afx.h': No such file or directory The Question How can I adjust the build environment of my msbuild wrapper so that the application builds correctly? (Pretty clearly the MFC paths aren't right for the msbuild environment, but how do i fix it for MSBuild+VS2010+MFC+CCNet?) Background Details We have successfully upgraded an MFC application (.exe with some MFC extension .dlls) to Visual Studio 2010 and can compile the application without issue on developer machines. Now I am working on compiling the application on the CI server environment I did a full installation of VS2010 (Professional) on the build server. In this way, I knew everything I needed would be on the machine (one way or another) and that this would be consistent with developer machines. VS2010 is correctly installed on the CI server, and the devenv task works as expected I now have a wrapper MSBuild script that does some extended version processing and then builds the .sln for the application via an MSBuild task. This wrapper script is run via CCNet's MSBuild task and fails with the above mentioned errors My Assumptions This seems to be a missing/wrong configuration of include paths to standard header resources of the MFC persuasion I should be able to coerce the MSBuild environment to consider the relevant resource files from my VS2010 install and have this approach work. But how do I do that? Am I setting Environment variables? Registry settings? I can see how one can inject additional directories in some cases, but this seems to need a more systemic configuration at the compiler defaults level.

• Only three primary partitions?

  As everyone probably knows, Windows allows a drive to have four primary partitions, one of which may be active. However, I have only three primary partitions. I shrunk one and created a fourth partition so I could install Windows 8 on it, but Disk Management only allows it to be a logical partition. Why might this be the case? If I cannot convert it to a primary partition, is it advisable to install Windows on a logical partition? If so, is hibernation supported?

• How can I stop new Command Prompt windows spawned by another program from covering my foreground win

  Under Windows 7 x64, when I'm ripping CDs with Exact Audio Copy, it spawns a Command Prompt window each time it invokes the external MP3 compression program I use, LAME. While that's going on, I usually like to surf the web. However, I find it quite annoying that even when Firefox has the foreground, the Command Prompt windows spawned by EAC are coming up in the foreground, on top of my Firefox window. Is there a way to make those new Command Prompt windows spawn in the background? Alternatively, is there a way to make the current active window stay in the foreground / on top while I'm using it?

  Another employee was working with a mounted VHD and was using diskpart on it and I'm not sure if he messed something up or not. I think it's fine but I wanted to double check. We have a Windows 2008 x64 machine that boots with EFI because of the large disks in the system. What should the different labels be within Disk Manager for this system? Here is what is currently set: 200 MB Partition - EFI System Partition C Partition - Boot, Page File, Crash Dump There should not be an active partition under EFI, correct? Also, is there supposed to be a "System" label in addition to "EFI System Partition"?

• Recover from a corrupted couchbase install

  We have a couchbase installation on a Windows 2008 R2 server that got corrupted (this was from before my tenure, now I want to clean it up). There is no add-remove entry in the Programs and Features list. There is no active service in services.msc. However, something still thinks Couchbase is installed. Shy of wiping the box (we aren't quite to "redeploy test environment servers at the push of a button" altho I'm working on it), how can I ensure that all remnants of couchbase installs prior are now gone? I believe the previous install was in the Couchbase 2.x range, but it may have been 1.7+ Running the installer again gives "Installer needs to update registry value in order to upgrade from the previous version. Please run installer again to continue."

• Out of Core Implementation of a Quadtree

  Hi, I am trying to build a Quadtree data structure(or let's just say a tree) on the secondary memory(Hard Disk). I have a C++ program to do so and I use fopen to create the files. Also, I am using tesseral coding to store each cell in a file named with its corresponding code to store it on the disk in one directory. The problem is that after creating about 1,100 files, fopen just returns NULL and stops creating new files. I can create further files manually in that directory, but using C++ it can not create any further files. I know about max limit of inode on ext3 filesystem which is (from Wikipedia) 32,000 but mine is way less than that, also note that I can create files manually on the disk; just not through fopen. Also, I really appreciate any idea regarding the best way to store a very dynamic quadtree on disk(I need the nodes to be in separate files and the quadtree might have a depth of 50). Using nested directories is one idea, but I think it will slow down the performance because of following the links on the filesystem to access the file. Thanks, Nima

• How to rename Java packages without breaking Subversion history?

  Hello everyone, The company I'm working for is starting up and they changed their name in the process. So we still use the package name com.oldname because we are afraid of breaking the file change history, or the ancestry links between versions, or whatever we could break (I don't think I use the right terms, but you get the concept). We use: Eclipse, TortoiseSVN, Subversion I found somewhere that I should do it in many steps to prevent incoherence between content of .svn folders and package names in java files: First use TortoiseSVN to rename the directory, updating the .svn directories. Then, manually rename the directory back to the original name. To finally use Eclipse to rename the packages (refactor) back to the new name, updating the java files. That seems good to me, but I need to know if the ancestry and history and everything else will still be coherent and working well. I don't have the keys to that server, that's why I don't hastily backup things and try one or two things. I would like to come up with a good reason not to do it, or a way of doing it which works. • Does OneNote have palm rejection or a hand rest spot?

  I just bought an Acer Iconia W500. I really wanted to use it for taking notes and having all the amenities of a full blown computer without the size. Using OneNote to take notes, I notice I can't rest my hand on the screen. I have read some about this and it seems the very best solution is to get a tablet with active digitizer technology, but there aren't too many with this and it is expensive. So barring that, is there any way I can rest my hand on the tablet screen while taking notes in OneNote? Or am I relegated to hovering my hand over the screen while I write notes? Does OneNote have a palm rest area or some sort of palm rejection?
