  • Suggestions for designing large-scale Java webapp from the ground up

    Hi all, I'm about to start developing a large-scale system and I'm struggling with which direction to proceed. I've done plenty of Java web apps before and I have plenty of experience with servlet containers and GWT and some experience with Spring. The problem is most of my webapps have been thrown together just to be a proof of concept and what I'm struggling with is what set of frameworks to use. I need to have both a browser based application as well as a web service designed to support access from mobile devices (Android and iPhone for now). Ideally, I'd like to design this system in such a way that I don't end up rewriting all of my servlets for each client (browser and phone) although I don't mind having some small checks in there to properly format the data. In addition, although I'm the only developer now, that won't necessarily be the case down the road and I'd like to design something that scales well both with regards to traffic and number of developers (isn't just a nightmare to maintain). So where I am now is planning on using GWT to design the browser-based interface but I'm struggling with how to reuse that code with to present the interface (most likely xml) for the mobile devices. Using GWT RPC would, I think, make it relatively easy to do all of the AJAX in the browser, but might make generating xml for the mobile phones difficult. In addition, I like the idea of using something like Hibernate for persistence and Spring Security to secure the whole thing. Again, I'm not sure how well those will cooperate with GWT (I think Hibernate should be fine...) There's obviously a lot more to this than I've presented here, but I've tried to give you the 5-minute overview. I'm a bit stumped and was wondering if anybody in the community had any experience starting from this place. Does what I'm trying to do make sense? Is it realistic? I have no doubt I can make all of these frameworks speak the same language, I'm just wondering if it's worth my time to fight with them.   • KeyUp processed for wrong control

    I have made a simple test application for the issue, two winforms each containing a button. The button on the first form opens the other form when clicked. It also subscribes to keyup events. The second form has its button set as "AcceptButton" and in the Clicked event we sleep for 1s and then set DialogResult to true (the sleep is to simulate some processing done) When enter is used to close this second form the KeyUp event of the button on the first form is triggered, even though the key was released well before the second had passed so the second form was still shown and focused. If any key other then enter is pressed in the second form the event is not triggered for the button on the first form.   • How to create a static header that remains even when navigating to other pages (lala.com)

    I'm interested in the way lala.com works. They have a header that remains fixed at the top of the browser and they have a flash music player in it. You can click on other links in the site and they are displayed below the header but the header is not disrupted and can continue playing music. If the target is a modern browser say IE8 & FF 3.6, what's the best way to achieve this? Thanks for any help.

  • Having vCam on custom classes instead of the root class.

    Maybe some of you guys know bout vCam from http://bryanheisey.com/blog/?page_id=22 I'm trying to have the script running on a custom classes instead of a MovieClip in the library. But after some trying I fail so I stick back to having the MC in the library and load the MC from the project root action-script files. Now it works fine if I run the MC on the root as files, but for more organizing purposes on my action-script files, I was thinking of calling it from a custom classes(where I can control the vCam), then call the custom classes from the root action-script files. But seems like it won't work other than the root action-script files. I'm not sure whether I'm missing any codes between the two custom classes, or its not coded to run that way. If it's not, then its fine too just that I want the things more organize. Or if you have any idea how to 'by-pass' this, please do tell me so.   • Why wont this JS code work if its all on the same line?

    I'm writing HTML code for a java servlet. i first write the code in html/js so i can debug what im working on, and then ill make it a java string and put it in my servlet. My problem is that the code is working fine when i view it in ff from a local html file, but when i view it on my java servlet, it doesnt work because the js isnt getting called. what I did was format the html that my servlet generated so that its not all on a single line and ran the code again. This time it worked. I copied this working code into a browser address bar so that it will all be on a single line, and copied that code back into the script in my html file. Now, when the previously working code is on a single line, it doesnt work.   • Execute SQL SP in Excel VBA

    HI I am having problem with getting all the columns back when i execute following code in excel vba. I only get 6 out of 23 columns back. Connection, command etc works fine (i can see exec command in the SQL Profiler), data headers are created for all 23 columns but i only get data for 6 column. Side Note: it's not prod level code, have missed out error handling on purpose, sp works fine in SQL management studio, ASP.Net, C# win form app, it is for Excel 2003 connecting to SQL 2008.     I am working on a filter functionality using ajax/jquery and php/mysql.I have two sets of check boxes 1)=for Regions 2)=for Localities.The filter is similar to the one here http://www.proptiger.com/property-in-pune-real-estate.php I want to send the values of both the check boxes to filter the records.The filter for localities will be locally filtered on the selection of a region check box.I have got it to work upto some extent This is called on the first set of check boxes. Went through posts,but was not able to fix it.Any help would be appreciated. EDIT I get an array when I check the first set of chck boxes,and also filter the records using above functions.   • In MVC2, how do I validate fields that aren't in my data model?

    I am playing with MVC2 in VS 2010 and am really getting to like it. In a sandbox application that I've started from scratch, my database is represented in an ADO.NET entity data model and have done much of the validation for fields in my data model using Scott Guthrie's "buddy class" approach which has worked very well. However, in a user registration form that I have designed and am experimenting with, I'd like to add a 'confirm email address' or a 'confirm password' field. Since these fields obviously wouldn't exist in my data model, how would I validate these fields client side and server side? I would like to implement something like 'Html.ValidationMessageFor', but these fields don't exist in the data model. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Spawn phone call from EC2 alerts

    I have a system setup on AWS/EC2, it currently is using their CloudWatch alert system. The problem is this sends just to email, when ideally I would like this to be making a phone call and/or sending text messages to certain phone numbers when an alert fires (Note that I do not need the phone call to actually say anything, just call the person). We are trying to solve the problem that Amazon alerts are only useful if people are checking their email, which isnt always the case because all server problems love to happen at 4am on saturday... Please respond with any possible solutions/ideas, ideally I do not want to implement an entire monitoring system (IE: Nagios) on top of everything to handle this.
