• Since updating to today's version of Skype on Win8, Skype won't even log in

  I am using the desktop (win32 not appstore) Skype on Windows 8. I accepted an auto-update today which now will not let me log into skype at all. I wiped out the AppData\Roaming\Skype folder because that's how you get Skype back in the past when it has gone stupid, but that didn't help either. I do not get any error message, just the circular progress indicator that lasts forever. (Okay, so far it's been 30 minutes. It may eventually time out yet.) Other ideas please? I tried the Windows 8 App Store Skype app (WinRT), which I hate, I guess I'll go back and install that for now. Update Skype 6.0.126 seems to be completely broken on my Win8 machine.

• Wifi ap finder/selector for windows 7

  Is there wifi finder program for windows 7 that can let me choose specific access points to connect to? In my school, the wifi network uses the same SSID for numerous access points and usually the default wifi finder in Windows 7 connects to the first one. Even if it connects to the closest one with the best signal, there are times when a specific access point will not work. Machine: Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 running Windows 7 (32bit) Note: On my ThinkPad, I've got access connection that does the job but that didn't seem to work on the IdeaPad the last time I tried.

  I have Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS installed on a VMware machine on Windows 7 host. • Getting USB boot to work in SmartOS on HP ProLiant N40L

  I recently downloaded SmartOS and tried running it on my HP ProLiant N40L, but it always fails on boot. After dd'ing the image to the USB stick, I plug it into the internal USB header and turn the machine on. After selecting from GRUB, it displays the following: , bss=0x0 It sits there for 2-4 minutes, then finally boots the OS and displays the following: WARNING: Couldn't read ACPI SRAT table from BIOS. lgrp support will be limited to one group. I've tried this with two different USB sticks. I've seen some mentions on the SmartOS website about people running it on an N40L, booting from USB, so maybe it's just broken hardware?   I have a number of windows servers, both win2003, win2003r2 and win2003r2 64 bit. After installing windows updates on the machines and rebooting terminal services give me an immediate "not connect" message. The servers are running fine and you can connect via the physical machine. Once you reboot the box (with remote restart in some cases when it's not accessible) terminal services behaves itself and allows a connection. Whilst it's not a show stopper it is rather annoying when you can't see your box. Anyone know why this is or what the cause is?

• Permanently change IP address on SuSE 10

  I am trying to change IP address of a SuSE 10 machine that is running Tomcat. I need to create a shell script to do this so could not use YaST. As some sites suggested on my Google search, I edited the files in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-* to change the IP address. After that, I restarted the network service by calling /etc/init.d/network restart. The network card restarting just fine. I, then, restarted tomcat web service. However, when I browsed the new IP address using browser, I got an "Request denied" message. Can anyone please tell me how I could do this? Thanks

• Using dnsmasq dns server on a laptop for a locally hosted tld

  Hi, I'm running a working apache install with mod vhost_alias on a laptop. Everything works, but I have to manually add hosts in my /etc/hosts file. I'd like to install dnsmasq to point a tld to my local machine (this is not the problem, I know how to add a wildcard tld to dnsmasq), but how do I make it so that it will go look for other dns servers upstream? Remember I'm talking about a laptop, so I will be working on various wifi hotspots, with different default gateways, dns servers, etc. I've searched for quite some time but the only things I find are guides that require you to hardcode the upstream servers wich is a no-go for me. Any help is appreciated!

• Mercurial SSH process blocks when run from Local System

  We are using Mercurial over SSH for our development. We use Hudson for continous integration, and have deployed it on Tomcat, running on a Windows 2003 Server using the Local System account. Mercurial is configured to use Putty's plink.exe as its ssh command in Mercurial.ini, together with a private key for SSH authentication. When Hudson attempts any Mercurial command over SSH, the operation just blocks. I can see the three processes being started: hg.exe, cmd.exe and plink.exe. On the remote machine, I can also see the SSH session being opened and the authentication key being accepted. After that, nothing appears to happen, and everything just blocks, seemingly forever. (As a side note, subversion/SVN over SSH works from Hudson to the same server, using the same user and authentication key). A solution would of course be the best, but at least a hint for how I should debug it to get further would be nice, since I'm stuck and haven't even got an error message right now.

• Ping, firewall or DNS problem on Win Server 2008 R2

  Hi there, I've installed windows server 2008 as a VM for the developers here to work on. Installed SQL Server 2008 as well as IIS7. I am not quite sure why, I can remote into that machine using the name I gave to it (winserverdev) but the guys that are supposed to use the bloody thing can't. One very interesting thing is that I can connect but I can't ping... not the name nor the IP address. Is there anything that I should be looking in order to make it work? Any ideas are welcome.   I'm looking to retire a server which has 12GB of ECC DDR2 RAM. I'd like to upgrade my multi-purpose machine (firewall, file server, VM host for Windows Home Server, etc.) using the RAM from the server. I was just wondering: Has anyone had experience using ECC RAM in a GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard (or any Gigabyte GA-G33M-XXXX motherboard for that matter)? Has anyone had experience using ECC RAM in a motherboard with a G33M chipset. I've searched everywhere and found the attitude positive of ECC memory working in a Non-ECC board, but I would like some specific positive feedback before proceeding tonight. I have to kick the entire house offline, which I don't like to do without good reason :)

User Jon opens the Videos folder but cannot see the dance dance baby.avi file. Checking the dance dance baby.avi file permissions here is what I see: Everyone - Read, Write Domain Admins - Full Control Michael - Read, Write Owner of File - Michael So here's my question, how come when Michael copies a file over from a Mac, the permissions on the file get changed even though Michael has no rights to change permissions? If the same file is copied over from a Windows machine, it just inherits the proper permissions from the parent Video folder. Am I missing something? Are my permissions wrong? Thanks. Michael

• What is causing a vm to exhibit packet loss?

  We have a pretty nice piece of hardware set up to run multiple virtual machines in vmware and one of the vm's is an instance of Windows Server 2003 running SQL Server 2005. For some reason we occasionally see 10-20 seconds of straight packet loss to this machine from remote machines (my workstation) as well as other vm's on the same physical hardware. I am using PingPlotter to keep a close eye on the packet loss. So far we've turned off flow control on the NIC but we are already running out of other things to try. What might be causing this and how can I identify the problem? Note: We also have another server with a very similar configuration with the same type of problem to a lesser extent (because its not used as heavily?)

• Trouble using remote desktop when connected via Cisco VPN

  I just setup my Cisco VPN and everything appears to be working fine. I opened the 'remote desktop' application and am unable to connect to my work desktop machine. When I disable Windows Firewall, I am able to connect, but not when Firewall is enabled. Is there a specific settings inside Windows 7 Firewall that should I be enabling or disabling for this to work without having to shut down the entire system? • Printer Management in AD Domain

  Hello, I normally push out all my printers via group policy preferences. However, the new copy machines I have are using some stranger drivers and I can not install x64/x86 drivers on the same machine for my clients to pull drivers from. So now I have two machines setup with the printer so they can pull drivers. Ontop of this there is specific driver configuration settings such as requiring the user to enter an access code to print set. Once the printer is installed via GPP, it puts everything to the default such as color mode, and other custom settings we like. I considered just using a Windows Print Server for this, but I do not know a way to push/delete these from clients like I can with GPP. Does anyone know how I can have a GPP copy the custom configuration I have set in the driver or have any recommendations?

  I have nginx as a http server with tomcat as a backend (using proxy_pass). It works great but I want to define my own error pages (404, 500, etc.) and that they are served by nginx and not tomcat. For example I have the following resource: https://domain.com/resource which doesn't exist. If I [GET] that URL then I get a Not Found message from Tomcat and not from nginx. What I want is that every time Tomcat responds with a 404 (or any other error message) nginx sends itself a message to the user: some html file accessible by nginx. The way I have my nginx server configured is very easy, just: location / { proxy_pass http://localhost:8080/<webapp-name>/; } And I've configured port 8080, which is tomcat, as not accessible from outside this machine. I don't think that using different location directives in nginx configuration will work, because there are some resources that depend on the URL: https://domain.com/customer/<non-existent-customer-name>/[GET] Will always return 404 (or any other error message), while: https://domain.com/customer/<existent-customer>/[GET] Will return anything different from 404 (the customer exists). Is there any way of serving Tomcat (Application Server) error messages with Nginx (http Server)? To check the message sent by the proxy_pass directive and act upon it?

• Symmetrix gatekeepers on Solaris 10

  I have some Solaris machines that are connected to EMC Symmetrix for SAN storage. Apparently the Symm has a gatekeeper device that is used with the symmetrix CLI. We don't need the CLI, but I have these gatekeeper devices that constantly fill /var/adm/messages and the like with corrupt label errors. Is there anything I can do (short of deleting the devices on machine start) to get rid of them? Or should I just try to get our SAN guy to get the installer for the CLI? These things are getting annoying, and the devfsadmd daemon keeps rediscovering them on boot.

• ERROR 0x8007007A when trying to schedule a task

  I am getting the error "The data area passed to a system call is too small. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007A)" when trying to create a scheduled task on a particular windows machine. The problem description is identical to that described in this Microsoft KB article I followed their steps to resolve: Stopped the task scheduler service (right-clicked "Task Scheduler" in the Services window from Control Panel and selected "Stop"). Restarted the task scheduler service Waited 15 minutes tried to schedule the task. But the error is persisting. To give more context of how we are creating these scheduled tasks, they are actually generated automatically from a configuration script (we run the script each time we wish to make a change). Each time this happens, it deletes all of the existing tasks and creates new ones. I don't know what else to try.... but surely there is some way to "reset" the task scheduler... How can I stop this error from happening.

  On a Windows machine, clicking and holding a keyboard key results in the key being types multiple times. For example, if I click and hold 'q' for a few seconds, I end up with the following: qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq Similarly, I can click and hold the Backspace key to delete multiple characters. On a Mac, it seems, clicking and holding a key for several seconds results in the key being types only once. To type it repeatedly, it is necessary to psychically click it multiple times. I'm unclear about whether that is a bug or a supposed-feature, but I am interested in replicating this functionality on a Mac. Any ideas? Thanks!

  Just assembled a new machine: MSI 880GM-E41 motherboard 500GB Samsung hard drive AMD Athlon II X4 640 processor 4GB RAM Windows 7 64 Bit LITE-ON Black 4X Blu-ray reader I boot up, start the install. When it gets to the screen to select what partition, the motherboard loses power. It doesnt make sense, I can leave it in the bios settings for a very long time and it doesnt lose power. When it does lose power, the monitor shuts down and the mouse loses power, but the power light stays on. I cannot tell if it is a harware or software problem.

Luckily, I have identified a few problem access points by MAC address (via their log messages in Console.app). Is it possible to tell my Airport on my Macbook to avoid those access points, and only speak with the access points who are far less touchy about me drinking the Apple kool-aid?
