  • Analysis Services with excel as front end - is it possible to get the nicer UI that powerpivot provi

    - by AJM
I have been looking into PowerPivot and concluded that for "self service BI" and ahoc buidling of cubes it has its uses. In particular I like the enhanced UI that you get from using PowerPivot rather than just using a PivotTable hooked up to an analysis services datasource. However it seems that hooking up PowerPivot to an existing analysis services cube is not a solution for "organisational BI". It is not always desireable to suck millions of rows into excel at once and the interface between PowerPivot and analysis services is very poor in my book. Hence the question is can an existing analysis services solution get the enhanced ui features that power pivot brings, withoout using powerpivot as the design tool? If powerpivot is aimed ad self service/personal BI then it seems bizare that the UI for this is better than for bigger/more costly analysis services solutions.

  • Optimal Sharing of heavy computation job using Snow and/or multicore

    - by James
Hi, I have the following problem. First my environment, I have two 24-CPU servers to work with and one big job (resampling a large dataset) to share among them. I've setup multicore and (a socket) Snow cluster on each. As a high-level interface I'm using foreach. What is the optimal sharing of the job? Should I setup a Snow cluster using CPUs from both machines and split the job that way (i.e. use doSNOW for the foreach loop). Or should I use the two servers separately and use multicore on each server (i.e. split the job in two chunks, run them on each server and then stich it back together). Basically what is an easy way to: 1. Keep communication between servers down (since this is probably the slowest bit). 2. Ensure that the random numbers generated in the servers are not highly correlated.

  • How to get a reference to IDuplexChannel, IDuplexSessionChannel or IOutputChannel in Wcf

    - by wizlb
I have a duplex Wcf service and I'd like to get a reference to IDuplexChannel, IDuplexSessionChannel or IOutputChannel so that I can use the non-blocking BeginSend method. On my server, inside of the handler for the initiating method I have the following (I have tried every interface that I listed in place of IOutputChannel. None of them seem to exist.) _clientCb = OperationContext.Current.GetCallbackChannel<IDxClientCb>(); _channel = OperationContext.Current.Channel; _duplexChannel = _channel as IOutputChannel; Debug.Print("Service IOutputChannel null: {0}", _duplexChannel == null); Similarly, in the client I have tried to cast the return value of DuplexChannelFactory.CreateChannel() to any of these interfaces and I always get back a null. How do I get a reference to one of these?

  • What is the problem with this Java code dealing with Generics?

    - by devoured elysium
interface Addable<E> { public E add(E x); public E sub(E y); public E zero(); } class SumSet<E extends Addable> implements Set<E> { private E element; public SumSet(E element) { this.element = element; } public E getSum() { return element.add(element.zero()); } } It seems that element.add() doesn't return an E extends Addable but rather an Object. Why is that? Has it anything to do with Java not knowing at run-time what the object types really are, so it just assumes them to be Objects(thus requiring a cast)? Thanks

  • Why do Java/C# edge out C++ as the recommended language to learn OOP on S.O?

    - by viksit
I noticed after reading the answers/discussion to this question (What is the best language to learn OOP on?) - that more and more people are recommending C# or Java over C++ to learn OOP on. A simple term search on that answer page results in 10 hits for C++, 21 for C# and 27 for Java. Now, I understand that these 2 languages fix a lot of quirks and issues with C++, and looked up these resources that relate mostly to performance, JVM vs native implementation, systems focus vs applications, manual memory management vs automated et al. My question is - are there any fundamental differences in the OO capabilities of Java/C# vs C++? Or are the former recommended purely due to their generic ease of use/improvements over the latter? Thanks. PS, I'm aware of Java interface inheritance vs C++ multiple inheritance as a difference. I would consider that an implementational one rather than functional.

  • Adding ivars to NSManagedObject subclass

    - by The Crazy Chimp
When I create an entity using core data then generate a subclass of NSManagedObject from it I get the following output (in the .h): @class Foo; @interface Foo : NSManagedObject @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *name; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSSet *otherValues; @end However, in my .m file I want to make use of the name and otherValues values. Normally I would simply create a couple of ivars and then add the properties for them as I required. That way I can access them in my .m file easily. In this situation would it be acceptable to do this? Would adding ivars to the .h (for name and otherValues) cause any unusual behaviour in the persistance & retrieval of objects?

  • Help! How to get the event handler with IE Dom interfaces?

    - by usfree74
Hey Gurus, I am working to use IE Dom interface to automate IE page access. I am trying to get all event handlers defined in a page. I am using IHTMLElement object now for this purpose. If the html page defines "onclick=xxx", element.onclick returns the click handler. However, if an event handler is defined in javascript, element.onclick simply returns NULL. What's the right way to get the event handler then? Thanks, xin Below is an example that uses javascript to define event handler. $(document).ready(function(){ $("a").click(function(event){ $(this).hide("slow"); alert("Thanks for visiting!"); window.location="http://cnn.com"; }); }); jQuery

  • Is C# 4.0 Tuple covariant

    - by RichK
(I would check this out for myself, but I don't have VS2010 (yet)) Say I have 2 base interfaces: IBaseModelInterface IBaseViewInterface And 2 interfaces realizing those: ISubModelInterface : IBaseModelInterface ISubViewInterface : IBaseViewInterface If I define a Tuple<IBaseModelInterface, IBaseViewInterface> I would like to set that based on the result of a factory that returns Tuple<ISubModelInterface, ISubViewInterface>. In C# 3 I can't do this even though the sub interfaces realize the base interfaces. And I'm pretty sure C# 4 lets me do this if I was using IEnumerable<IBaseModelInterface> because it's now defined with the in keyword to allow covariance. So does Tuple allow me to do this? From what (little) I understand, covariance is only allowed on interfaces, so does that mean there needs to be an ITuple<T1, T2> interface? Does this exist?

  • remove non-UTF-8 characters from xml with declared encoding=utf-8 - Java

    - by St Nietzke
I have to handle this scenario in Java: I'm getting a request in XML form from a client with declared encoding=utf-8. Unfortunately it may contain not utf-8 characters and there is a requirement to remove these characters from the xml on my side (legacy). Let's consider an example where this invalid XML contains £ (pound). 1) I get xml as java String with £ in it (I don't have access to interface right now, but I probably get xml as a java String). Can I use replaceAll(£, "") to get rid of this character? Any potential issues? 2) I get xml as an array of bytes - how to handle this operation safely in that case?

  • Editing a UIViewController from another class.

    - by Guy
I am trying to programmatically change the user interface of a UIViewController from another NSObject class. The problem is that I am unsure of how to access the UIViewController's view from the NSObject class. So for example, in my NSObject class, I say something like: self.view = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 320, 480)]; self.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor yellowColor]; but I keep getting errors saying "Request for member "view" in something not a strut or union." Is there something I need to allow my NSObject class to see my UIViewController? Thanks!

  • Calling a C function in a DLL with enum parameters from Delphi

    - by dommer
I have a third-party (Win32) DLL, written in C, that exposes the following interface: DLL_EXPORT typedef enum { DEVICE_PCI = 1, DEVICE_USB = 2 } DeviceType; DLL_EXPORT int DeviceStatus(DeviceType kind); I wish to call it from Delphi. How do I get access to the DeviceType constants in my Delphi code? Or, if I should just use the values 1 and 2 directly, what Delphi type should I use for the "DeviceType kind" parameters? Integer? Word?

  • Custom Item in ListActivity on Android

    - by Honza Pokorny
Hello everyone, I've spent hours reading through the SDK reference, googling and reading tutorials - but I still can't figure it out. I would like to know how to create a custom list item in the ListActivity widget on Android. Something similar to a Twitter client interface. Each list item has different types of text, possibly an icon, etc. Does anyone know of any resources that would help me understand the process of creating something like that? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Workaround for abstract attributes in Java

    - by deamon
In Scala I would write an abstract class with an abstract attribute path: abstract class Base { val path: String } class Sub extends Base { override val path = "/demo/" } Java doesn't know abstract attributes and I wonder what would be the best way to work around this limitation. My ideas: a) constructor parameter abstract class Base { protected String path; protected Base(String path) { this.path = path; } } class Sub extends Base { public Sub() { super("/demo/"); } } b) abstract method abstract class Base { // could be an interface too abstract String getPath(); } class Sub extends Base { public String getPath() { return "/demo/"; } } Which one do you like better? Other ideas? I tend to use the constructor since the path value should not be computed at runtime.

  • Why my buttons OnClick event fails to fire?

    - by Pentium10
I have an activity, where the ListView holds customized linear layout elements for each row. One of the rows has a button defined as: <Button android:text="Pick a contact" android:id="@+id/btnPickContact" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:gravity="center_vertical" android:layout_height="wrap_content"></Button> Then in java, I have this code: ((Button) row.findViewById(R.id.btnPickContact)).setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI); intent.putExtra(EXTRA_ONLINE_ID, (String)v.getTag(TAG_ONLINE_ID)); act.startActivityForResult(intent, PICK_CONTACT); } }); In this setup the event fails to start. Also I've tried by implementing the interface: @Override public void onClick(View v) { Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI); intent.putExtra(EXTRA_ONLINE_ID, (String)v.getTag(TAG_ONLINE_ID)); startActivityForResult(intent, PICK_CONTACT); } still no luck, the event doesn't fire. What to do?

  • GUI system architecture?

    - by topright
I'm designing GUI (graphical user interface) system for a game engine (C++). Idea is to create a heirarchy of GUI controllers like Focusable, Hoverable, Dragable etc. Every GUI component can attach multiple controllers, they modify component's behaviour. I think it gives flexible system and protects from code duplication. Different instances of the same GUI class can have different complex behaviours (may be, even change it dynamically), so this approach looks practical. The other choice is to add focused, hovered, dragged etc. flags in the base GUI component class. It looks like overhead and not that flexible. Another solution is to use Decorator pattern and wrap objects with FocusDecorator, HoverDecorator etc. Maintaining such system looks a bit harder. Question: What are pitfalls in my solution? May be you have seen a better approaches in GUI systems? What are the best ways of implementing such flexible complex system?

  • What is the relationship between IRimTable and PersistenceStore?

    - by Martin
The BlackBerry Desktop API has the interface IRimTable which apparently maps an "application database" on a BlackBerry device to a virtual structure (i.e, IRimTable has IRimRecords, each of which has IRimField) that developer can browse the handheld device data when it is connected to a desktop computer. Meanwhile, applications in the handheld device can store its data in PersistenceStore databases. The point where I'm stuck is the PersistenceStore API doesn't define any Table or Records or Fields. Does anybody knows what is the relationship between these two classes? And how does the mapping work (if at all) ?

  • Sticky Footers that move down when dynamic content gets loaded

    - by Dominic Rodger
I've been using this snippet of jQuery to get a sticky footer: if($(document.body).height() < $(window).height()){ $("#footer").css({position: "absolute",top:($(window).scrollTop()+$(window).height()-$("#footer").height())+"px", width: "100%"}); } $(window).scroll(positionFooter).resize(positionFooter); However, that breaks when I've got expandable/collapsible divs lying around where the original content was less high than the window, since it is then stuck to the bottom of the window, rather than the bottom of the document. Is there a way of fixing this, or a better way of doing it? Please bear in mind that I don't have much control over the HTML, since I need to do this in Django's admin interface, which doesn't allow much injection of HTML in the places you might want to to accomplish this sort of thing (i.e. this answer and this answer don't work for me).

  • MVC2 IModelBinder and parsing a string to an object - How do I do it?

    - by burnt_hand
I have an object called Time public class Time{ public int Hour {get;set;} public int Minute {get;set;} public static Time Parse(string timeString){ //reads the ToString()'s previous output and returns a Time object } override protected string ToString(){ //puts out something like 14:50 (as in 2:50PM) } } So what I want is for the automatic model binding on the Edit or Create action to set this Time instance up from a string (i.e. feed the Parse method with the string and return the result). The reason I am doing this is that I will have a DropDownList with selectable times. The value of each option will be the parser readable string. Can anyone provide an example BindModel method from the IModelBinder interface?

  • .NET interview, code structure and the design

    - by j_lewis
I have been given the below .NET question in an interview. I don’t know why I got low marks. Unfortunately I did not get a feedback. Question: The file hockey.csv contains the results from the Hockey Premier League. The columns ‘For’ and ‘Against’ contain the total number of goals scored for and against each team in that season (so Alabama scored 79 goals against opponents, and had 36 goals scored against them). Write a program to print the name of the team with the smallest difference in ‘for’ and ‘against’ goals. the structure of the hockey.csv looks like this (it is a valid csv file, but I just copied the values here to get an idea) Team - For - Against Alabama 79 36 Washinton 67 30 Indiana 87 45 Newcastle 74 52 Florida 53 37 New York 46 47 Sunderland 29 51 Lova 41 64 Nevada 33 63 Boston 30 64 Nevada 33 63 Boston 30 64 Solution: class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { string path = @"C:\Users\<valid csv path>"; var resultEvaluator = new ResultEvaluator(string.Format(@"{0}\{1}",path, "hockey.csv")); var team = resultEvaluator.GetTeamSmallestDifferenceForAgainst(); Console.WriteLine( string.Format("Smallest difference in ‘For’ and ‘Against’ goals > TEAM: {0}, GOALS DIF: {1}", team.Name, team.Difference )); Console.ReadLine(); } } public interface IResultEvaluator { Team GetTeamSmallestDifferenceForAgainst(); } public class ResultEvaluator : IResultEvaluator { private static DataTable leagueDataTable; private readonly string filePath; private readonly ICsvExtractor csvExtractor; public ResultEvaluator(string filePath){ this.filePath = filePath; csvExtractor = new CsvExtractor(); } private DataTable LeagueDataTable{ get { if (leagueDataTable == null) { leagueDataTable = csvExtractor.GetDataTable(filePath); } return leagueDataTable; } } public Team GetTeamSmallestDifferenceForAgainst() { var teams = GetTeams(); var lowestTeam = teams.OrderBy(p => p.Difference).First(); return lowestTeam; } private IEnumerable<Team> GetTeams() { IList<Team> list = new List<Team>(); foreach (DataRow row in LeagueDataTable.Rows) { var name = row["Team"].ToString(); var @for = int.Parse(row["For"].ToString()); var against = int.Parse(row["Against"].ToString()); var team = new Team(name, against, @for); list.Add(team); } return list; } } public interface ICsvExtractor { DataTable GetDataTable(string csvFilePath); } public class CsvExtractor : ICsvExtractor { public DataTable GetDataTable(string csvFilePath) { var lines = File.ReadAllLines(csvFilePath); string[] fields; fields = lines[0].Split(new[] { ',' }); int columns = fields.GetLength(0); var dt = new DataTable(); //always assume 1st row is the column name. for (int i = 0; i < columns; i++) { dt.Columns.Add(fields[i].ToLower(), typeof(string)); } DataRow row; for (int i = 1; i < lines.GetLength(0); i++) { fields = lines[i].Split(new char[] { ',' }); row = dt.NewRow(); for (int f = 0; f < columns; f++) row[f] = fields[f]; dt.Rows.Add(row); } return dt; } } public class Team { public Team(string name, int against, int @for) { Name = name; Against = against; For = @for; } public string Name { get; private set; } public int Against { get; private set; } public int For { get; private set; } public int Difference { get { return (For - Against); } } } Output: Smallest difference in for' andagainst' goals TEAM: Boston, GOALS DIF: -34 Can someone please review my code and see anything obviously wrong here? They were only interested in the structure/design of the code and whether the program produces the correct result (i.e lowest difference). Much appreciated. I have also base class for data managers BaseDataManager<T> : IDataManager<T> where T : EntityObject, IDataObject .... And i have particular classes public class Result : EntityObject, IDataObject .... public class ResultDataManager : BaseDataManager<Result> ... I want to implement service locator, which will return instance of IDataManager<T> for T But I stucked how to implement it in a neat way without a lot of castings. Any ideas?

  • Inject WCF proxy with credentials using StructureMap

    - by Steve Horn
I have a service proxy generated by svcutil which generated an interface(IStudentContract) and a concrete type implementing (StudentContractClient). I'd like to have instances of StudentContractClient injected into my classes via StructureMap. My proxy also needs to have credentials supplied as seen in this passing unit test: <Test()> _ Public Sub Then_the_web_service_call_should_not_throw_an_exception() Dim studentServiceProxy As New StudentContractClient Dim credential As New NetworkCredential credential.Domain = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("something") credential.UserName = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("something") credential.Password = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("something") studentServiceProxy.ClientCredentials.Windows.ClientCredential = credential Dim result = studentServiceProxy.GetCurrentTeachersByStudentSepid(26899) result.Count.ShouldEqual(4) End Sub My question is what would the structuremap configuration look like to have instances of IStudentContract injected with the credentials supplied? Thanks for any help!

  • Websphere exception handling

    - by Benjamin
Hi all, From a security standpoint, what is the best solution to handle application errors with Websphere? I've been thinking of creating a class that is called every time an application error is generated, log the error and display a generic error message to the users. In PHP this can be achieved using the set_exception_handler() function. Is there something similar for websphere that could be configured in the web.xml? I've found codes like this on the internet: <error-page> <error-code>500</error-code> <location>/servlet/ExceptionHandlerServlet</location> </error-page> But that would only work with "500" HTTP error codes. I really want something generic that catches everything. Something like a class that implements a certain interface which can have access to all information about the error. Thanks for your time.
