  • Name that blog entry - Modelling changes over time with two db columns only.

    I vaguely remember reading a blog entry (written by a well-known blogger I think) about how to model price changes over time, and that you could model most changes by saving two dates only (two columns in a db). The blog talked about prices on a website changing over time and how you could figure out the right price to charge knowing only when the purchase had been made. Very vague, I know, but my google-fu is failing me, everyone at IRC are busy talking about other stuff and I don't know what to do! :)

    I am Loading large no of rows into a table from a csv data file . For every 10000 records I want to update the indexs on the table for optimization (update statistics ). Any body tell me what is the command i can use? Also what is MSSQL "UPDATE STATISTICS" equivalent in Oracle.is Update statistics means index optimization or gatehring statistics. I am using Oracle 10g and 11g. Thanks in advance.

  • Query a stored procedure for it's parameter names and types

    Is there any easy way to query a stored procedure (Oracle - PL/SQL) for what parameters it expects? I know that I can query USER_SOURCE to get the whole procedure but I'd then have to parse the whole procedure, and if the parameter is of type [table].[column]%TYPE I'd then have to query the table schema as well. Either using just sql or via ODP.Net.

    I have the following VBA code inside an Excel macro: With ActiveSheet.QueryTables.Add( _ Connection:=ConnStr, _ Destination:=ActiveSheet.Range("A1"), _ Sql:=SqlStr) .Refresh End With And yet I am getting the error: "Run-time error '1004': Application-defined or object-defined error." The debugger points to this code as the source of error. Assuming that my ConnStr and SqlStr are correct, why am I getting this error? I am using Excel 2007 and I am querying an Oracle database.

    There's a field with type of varchar. It actually stores a float point string. Like 2.0 , 12.0 , 34.5 , 67.50 ... What I need is a update statement that remove the ending zeros of fields like 2.0 , 12.0 , change them to their integer representation , that is 2 , 12 ...,and leave 3.45 , 67.50 unchanged .     I am going to use forms authentication but I want to be able to link the asp.net users to some tables in the db for example If I have a class and students (as roles) I'll have a class students table. I'm planning to put in a Users table containing a simple int userid and ASP.NET username in there and put userid wherever I want to link the users. Does that sound good? any other options of modeling this? it does sound a bit convoluted?

    I've got a table (col1, col2, ...) with an index on (col1, col2, ...). The table has got millions of rows in it, and I want to run a query: SELECT col1, COUNT(col2) WHERE col1 NOT IN (<couple of exclusions>) GROUP BY col1 Unfortunately, this is resulting in a full table scan of the table, which takes upwards of a minute. Is there any way of getting oracle to use the index on the columns to return the results much faster?

    Just installed django-db-log module and trying to make it work properly. 'python manage.py syncdb' command created databases, it seems like logging works, but there is nothing about it in admin panel. As I found in documentation, it should add itself in admin panel without any additional configuration, but then I added 'djangodblog.middleware.DBLogMiddleware' in MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES and 'djangodblog' in INSTALLED_APPS it looks like nothing happens. What I'm doing wrong?

No Exceptions, silence. Plus, the thread with the Loader is not running anymore.   • utl_file.FCLOSE() is slow with large files

    We are using utl_file in Oracle 10g to copy a blob from a table row to a file on the file system and when we call utl_file.fclose() it takes a long time. It's a 10mb file, not very big, and it takes just over a minute to complete. Anyone know why this would be so slow? Thanks
