• Strange Inode/Ram cache drops happening in CentOS

  I run a CentOS 5.7 machine (64bit) with 24GB ram and 4x SAS drives in RAID10 setup. This machine runs nginx/1.0.10, php-fpm & xcache. About a month back the RAM usage of this machine has changed. About every few hours the 'CACHE' is flushed from the RAM, this happens exactly when the 'Inode table usage' drops. I'm pretty sure these drops are related. (see the 2 attached images). This server hosts quite a lot of small files (20M all a few KB big). Not many files are deleted (maybe 100 per hour (total size a few MB max)), not enough to account for the huge Inode table drops. I also have no crons running which could cause these drops. Sar -r output: http://pastebin.com/C4D0B79i My question: Why are these huge RAM/Inode usage drops happening? How can I get Nginx/PHP to use all of my servers RAM?

• Crawling a Content Folio

  Content Folios in WebCenter Content allow you to assemble, track, and access a logical group of documents and/or links.  It allows you to manage them as just a list of items (simple folio) or organized as a hierarchy (advanced folio).  The built-in UI in content server allows you to work with these folios, but publishing them or consuming them externally can be a bit of a challenge.   The folios themselves are actually XML files that contain the structure, attributes, and pointers to the content items.  So to publish this somewhere, such as a Site Studio page, you could perhaps use an XML parser to traverse the structure and create your output.  But XML parsers are not always the easiest or most efficient to use.  In order to more easily crawl and consume a Content Folio, Ed Bryant - Principal Sales Consultant, wrote a component to do just that.  His component adds a service which does all the work for you and returns the folio structure as a simple resultset.  So consuming and publishing that folio on a Site Studio page or in your portal using RIDC is a breeze!  For example, let's take an advanced Content Folio example like this: If we look at the native file, the XML looks like this: But if we access the folio using the new service - http://server/cs/idcplg?IdcService=FOLIO_CRAWL&dDocName=ecm008003&IsPageDebug=1 - this is what the result set looks like (using the IsPageDebug parameter). • Exempt programs from using active VPN connection

  When I connect to a VPN, all my network traffic is automatically routed through it. Is there a way to add exemptions to that? I don't know if adding exceptions has anything to do with the VPN protocol, but the VPN I'm using is of the OpenVPN protocol. Speaking of OpenVPN, why is it not installed by default on Ubuntu installs unlike PPTP? I could not get the list of IRCHighWay's servers, and this is the result I get trying to connect on XChat with running the bash script running: * Looking up irc.irchighway.net * Connecting to irc.irchighway.net (65.23.153.98) port 6667... * Connected. • Would Using a PHP Framework Be Beneficial in My Context?

  I've just started work at a small start-up company who mainly uses PHP to develop their front-end apps. I had no prior PHP experience before joining, and this has led to my apps becoming large pieces of spaghetti code. I essentially started by adding code to implement an initial feature, and then continued to hack in more code to implement further features – without much thought for the overall design. The apps themselves output XML to render on small mobile devices. I recently started looking into frameworks that I could use. I reckon an advantage would be that they seem to force developers to modularise their programs using good-practice design patterns. This seems great for someone in my position. The extra functions they provide, for example: interfacing with databases in such a way as to make SQL injection impossible, would be very useful too. The downside I can see is that there will be a lot of overhead for me in terms of the time taken to learn the framework itself (while still getting to grips with PHP itself). I'm also worried that it will be overkill for the scale of the apps we develop. They tend to be programs that interface with a fairly simple back-end DB, and will generate about 5 different XML screens. Probably around 1 or 2 thousand lines of code. The time it takes just to configure the frameworks may not be worth it. The final problem I can see is that developers in the company – who have to go over my code, and who do not know the PHP framework I may use – will have a much harder time understanding it. Given those pros and cons, I'm still not sure on what the best course of action will be; so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

• DB API for shell scripting (any shell)

  I am faced with some legacy shell scripts that run batch data processing jobs in Oracle using SQL+. For the most part, the data tier does not have to communicate back to the script with retrieved data to be passed for shell-level processing but in a few cases it does. The problem is, SQL+ is really meant to be an end user app and not an API that can communicate with other clients programmaticaly. That is why people have invented APIs such as DBD::DBI for Perl, JDBC for Java, ODBC etc. The way it is done is they invoke SQL+ and then parse the output, which is clearly designed for human eye consumption, using tools like sed and awk. The whole thing is at best a hack and very prone to bugs. Since this client is rather conservative with their technology, they don't want to scale their scripts up to Perl or Python where there are data access APIs. So I am wondering whether there are similar APIs for shell, e.g. K or bash. What I would like is if an API would return data in a 2-dimensional array or strings (for the lack of type setting) so that I can just read DB data like that. The way they do it now is akin to parsing regular web page HTML to get a single stock quote rather than cleanly calling a web service and be done with it. Anybody know of a product I can use? Thanks

• Permission problem - users can't access main index.php anymore

  From /var/www, I executed "chmod -R 774 ." and now none of my .php scripts are accessible. From my browser, when I type in mydomain.com or mydomain.com/test2.php or mydomain.com/test.php, I get the 403 Forbidden error msg. So, I changed the permissions of 3 of the .php scripts to 775, but this didn't help either.   I'm trying to convert a bunch of movies into h.264 mp4's using FFMPEG. These movies are sourced from various portable camcorders such as the Flip Mino HD and the Kodak ZI8. One issue I'm having with video from the ZI8 is it seems to be causing FFMPEG to segfault.   How do i find the throughput of a CPU and the Hardisk on an open solaris machine. Using MPstat or iostat. I'm having a hard time identifying the throughput if it is given at all in the commands output. Eg. in mpstat there is very little explanation as to what the columns mean http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-5166/mpstat-1m?l=en&a=view&q=syscl+mpstat I've been using the syscl column divided by time interval to find the throughput but to be honest i have no idea what a system call truelly is. I'm trying to to analyze a hardrive and CPU while writing a file to the hardisk and when at rest Thanks in advance. Jim

• Run batch on files in a relative folder

  I have a windows batch script that runs a SOX command on various files, but I don't know how to get the batch to run on files in a relative path to that of the SOX executable. Currently all the files are in the root and it outputs to /combined. The Batch Script: cd %~dp0 mkdir combined FOR %%A IN (*.mp3) DO sox static.mp3 %%A "combined/%%~nxA" pause I want the script to run the sox command on files in the directory "audiotracks" and output it to the directory "combined". To give you an idea, this would be the desired folder structure: /root sox.exe batch.bat static.mp3 /audiotracks audio1.mp3 audio2.mp3 audio3.mp3 audio4.mp3 /combined audio1out.mp3 audio2out.mp3 audio3out.mp3 audio4out.mp3 Is this possible, or is there a better method of doing this?   Hi I have been trying to send commands to a running gnu screen session (4.00.03) in opensolaris, but cannot get it to run any commands through any combination of screen -X Ok, I start a screen session with screen -S test, and then tried to with screen -r -X "date"to just show me the date, when I would reconnect to it. But neither an error message nor output in the screen happened. I tried with so many combinations, that I can't even remember. Any hints on how to accomplish it? The reason why I am doing this is, because I have a program, which does not come as a daemon, and I wish to start it in a screen session, so I can later on see what is going on.

  I have Ubuntu Linux 12.04 version the latest right now.I want to mount an external HDD NTFS 1TB.I have followed many guides but still no success.The error I'm getting is this: Failed to read last sector (1953523119): Invalid argument HINTS: Either the volume is a RAID/LDM but it wasn't setup yet, or it was not setup correctly (e.g. by not using mdadm --build ...), or a wrong device is tried to be mounted, or the partition table is corrupt (partition is smaller than NTFS), or the NTFS boot sector is corrupt (NTFS size is not valid). Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Invalid argument The device '/dev/sdb1' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS. Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?   I downloaded 12.04.1 and md5 sum checked them and everything is good. Made a live usb and booted up... Just gets to where its about to start with the purple ubuntu loading screen then it goes back to text and gives this message: BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on ///filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs This happens in the live option, or persistent even the file checking one doesn't work Also I've tried a few different F6 options to no avail. I used 'LiLi USB creator' and 'unetbootin' and also 'Universal USB Installer,' all with the same results. I've also tried using a VM and it showed the same. That is when I figured I had a corrupt .iso so I downloaded it again checked the MD5: e235b63c02644e219b7bf3668f479c9e. Only I'm having the same problem. I'm just about ready to give up on 12.04.1 and just go back to 10.04 utill the next LTS comes out. I've got a dell mini 10 btw. Thanks for your time.

  I have a Kingston 4-in-1 Multimedia reader. When my PC was formatted with Win7 it worked fine. I decided to change to Ubuntu 14.04 and now it doesn't work. If I plug it into one of the USB2 ports it works fine, but whenever I plug it into one of the USB3 ports, it thinks about it for a minute and then dies. • Powershell variables to string

  I'm new to powershell. I'm trying to write an error handler to wrap around my script.  Part of the error handler is dumping out some variable settings.  I spent a while trying to do this and couldn't google a complete solution so I thought I'd post something. I want to display the $myinvocation variable. • Find files containing a string on the whole filesystem

  I need to find all the instances of a given string in the whole filesystem, because I don't remember in which configuration files, script or any other programs I put it and I need to update that string with a new one. I tried with the following command `grep -nr 'needle' / --exclude-dir=.svn | mail [email protected] -s 'References on xxx' If I run this command on a small directory it gives me the output I need in the form /path1/:nn:line containing needle /path2/:nn:line containing needle where /path1 is the full path of the file, nn is the row containing the needle and last field is the content of the line. However when I run the command on the root directory the grep process hang after a while. I run this script about 8 hours ago and even on a small filesystem (less than 5GB) it doesn't end and if I run top or ps the process seems sleeping root 24909 0.0 0.1 3772 1520 pts/1 S+ Feb10 0:15 grep -nr needle / --exclude-dir=.svn Why it doesn't end? Is there any better way to do this (it's a one time job, I don't need to execute this more than once) Thanks.

• How to change CapsLock key to produce "a"?

  While typing I often hit the CapsLock key instead of the a key. (QWERTZU keyboard) This is quite annoying because the moment I realise that I hit the wrong key, I will have to delete multiple character/lines of text an rewrite them in the right form. I am searching for a way to prevent this. I have found a possibility to disable the CapsLock key in Keyboard Layout Options. But this would in my case mean that instead of writing an a I would write nothing. Positive - I don't have to rewrite a whole line, but only one character Negative - It's not that obvious that I hit the wrong key, as a missing character is not perceivable as an upper-case line of text. I would therefore prefer a possibility to map CapsLock to a . Thus when hitting CapsLock an a character would be written. Positive - If I hit CapsLock instead of a I get the output I actually wanted to type. Negative - If I hit CapsLock in any other context I will get an a character. As I don't ever intentionally use the CapsLock key this would not really pose a problem. (I think, or does it?) My Question: So how do I change to a ? And is there any case where this could be dangerous/provoke unwanted behaviour?

• Jenkins shows same information for all projects

  I've been using Jenkins for the last month or so and what started out as a small issue has gotten worse and worse. I have 10 projects in Jenkins, all polling from different Git repos and building to different environments but they all show the same details on the dashboard. I can still build the projects, but I have to manually enter the URL to see any console output etc. I'm running 1.536 under Ubuntu 12.04, there's not much in the logs other than the following; Oct 22, 2013 2:21:19 PM WARNING jenkins.model.lazy.AbstractLazyLoadRunMap search JENKINS-15652 Assertion error #1: failing to load /data/builds #20 EXACT: lo=23,hi=9,size=23,size2=23 – Any ideas?
