  If I have understood well C++0x is now on a phase to resolve pending issues, so no new features will be added. What I want to know is what new features you want to have in C++ after C++0x is released. Just to give you an idea, I have added major existing proposal that could be included after C++0x: Concepts, Contract Programming, Garbage Collection, Macro scopes, Modules, Multimethods, Reflection Answer with your favorite feature if not already in an answer and up-vote them if already present. • When designing an event, is it a good idea to prevent listeners from being added twice?

  I am creating an event-based API where a user can subscribe to an event by adding listener objects (as is common in Java or C#). When the event is raised, all subscribed listeners are invoked with the event information. I initially decided to prevent adding an event listener more than once. If a listener is added that already exists in the listener collection, it is not added again. However, after thinking about it some more, it doesn't seem that most event-based structures actually prevent this. Was my initial instinct wrong? I'm not sure which way to go here. I guess I thought that preventing addition of an existing listener would help to avoid a common programming error. Then again, it could also hide a bug that would lead to code being run multiple times when it shouldn't.

  I have vast programming knowledge; C++/C#/ActionScript/ASM/PHP..... so learning the language of SilverLight itself isn't of an issue. To keep long story short, when asking this question I'm asking it as a developer who's coming from Flash world - great graphics/sounds/media support, fully cross-platform, ability to combine several SWFs within a "movie" (which also implies code reusability). A Flash developer have pretty much freedom. What are most important things that i must know in order to jump into silverlight development? • IPhone: Controllers, Delagates, DataSources, etc all in one class?

  Hi All, I am learning iPhone programming. I am starting with a simple example of displaying recently used documents in a UITableView. What I am confused about is why do I need to have several classes and why cant I just use one? Example, My class is called RecentFileList. I need to implement controller, delegate and datasource as well as the actual table view. Can't I just do this all in my RecentFileList Class versus having to create a RecentFileListDelegate RecentFileListController, RecentFileListDataSource class, etc, etc. Related to this can one define a class like: @interface FileListView : NSObject <UITableViewDelegate> <UITableViewController> <UITableViewDataSource { // code } @end or would I just do the work to make my class a delegate and controller in init()?

• Using custom HTML attributes for JavaScript purposes?

  One of my colleagues doesn't like to use HTML classes and ids for javascript/jQuery purpose. Therefore I've seen that he had created custom html attribute such as <div id="myid" class="cssClasses ..." [some-purpose-id]="mycustomId">...</div> I asked him if it was really a good idea and he replied that he considers that classes and Ids should be reserved for styling. Personally, I would have used classes. Some classes would have been used for styling, and some other classes would have been used for programming (jQuery selectors). The idea is to keep things appart also. And of course jQuery could set styling classes but if possible not use them for selection. Of course I also use id when appropriate but since an id is unique on a page, I like to do generic stuff using classes. I would like to know you opinions on the better approach (if there is one). • Is it good practice to avoid declaring a pointer to BOOL type in objective C?

The excerpt answer provided by bbum is below: The problem isn't the assignment, it is much more likely that you declared your instance variable to be BOOL *initialBroadcast;. There is no reason to declare the instance variable to be a pointer (at least not unless you really do need a C array of BOOLs).. Remove the * from the declaration. 1.Is there anything wrong in using a pointer variable even when I do not have to maintain an array of BOOLs? 2.I think even if avoiding them a good practice, it is not specific to objective-C and applies to all programming languages which has pointers. • C++ private pointer "leaking"?

  I'm going to create a class to hold a long list of parameters that will be passed to a function. Let's use this shorter example: class ParamList{ public: ParamList(string& a_string); string& getString(); //returns my_string private: string& my_string; } My question is this: my_string is private, yet I'm returning the reference to it. Isn't that called something like private pointer leaking in C++? Is this not good programming practice? I want callers of getString to be able to get the reference and also modify it. • Xcode 3.2 not recompiling changed files

  I've been programming a new iPhone application and everything has been chugging along fine, until this afternoon when I noticed that any changes I was making were not being reflected in the actual app! Even code that throws errors isn't getting picked up by the compiler. To get around this, I have taken to the following procedure: Finish making my edits, and add code to the file which will always throw a compiler error. Right-click the file I have just edited, and hit "Compile" to just compile that one file; it will throw the error. Remove the error-producing code, and again right-click and "Compile" the one file. Build the whole project This is quite annoying, and I can't figure out why this would suddenly happen to my Xcode project. Any thoughts on what could be causing this, and how to fix it?

  From the official NDK site: The Android NDK... provides headers and libraries that allow you to build activities, handle user input, use hardware sensors, access application resources, and more, when programming in C or C++. If you write native code, your applications are still packaged into an .apk file and they still run inside of a virtual machine on the device. The fundamental Android application model does not change. Yet, it is always described as a companion tool to the Android SDK and as a toolset that allows to "implement parts of your applications using native-code languages such as C and C++". My understanding from this is that, unlike the Java based SDK, the NDK is not designed to implement certain parts of an Android application. Is this correct? If so, what parts doesn't the NDK allow implementing?

• Conditionally setting the font color of an item in a drop down box in JSF

  I'm a newbie to web programming, so please bear with me. I am using JSF 1.2 and I want to conditionally set the color of the items in my drop down list. In other words, I have a collection of items that, along with a key and a value, also have a boolean property, warning, that is dynamically set by user action. I want the drop down to show all of the items, but those whose warning property is set to true should be displayed in red. I assume I have to extend the SelectItem class to add in the boolean property. How do I then conditionally set the color of the font of those items whose warning property is set to true in my JSP pages? Thanks in advance

• (When) Does hardware, especially the CPU(s), deliver wrong results?

  What I'm talking about is: Is it possible that under certain circumstances the CPU "buggs" and suddenly responses 1+1=2? In which parts of the computer can that happen (HDD, RAM, Mainboard)? What could be the causes? Bad quality? Overheating? Does that even happen? When yes, how frequently? If everything is okay with the CPU (not a single fault in production, good temperature), can that still happen sometimes? What would be the results of, let's say one to three wrong computations? This is programming related as it would be nice to know if you can even rely on the hardware to return the right results.

  Hi I have a question about debugging a running C++ program in Linux. If a programming is already running and can't be interrupted, how to do that. I can find three ways, but I don't know too much about details, I am grateful if any one can elaborate it deeper. 1) we can use GDB by specifying the process ID gdb -p PID In this case, what's the difference between this and attach PID? 2) We can use pstat, however, I am using Ubuntu, no pstat, but only mpstat it seems that mpstat does not provide too much information, and not so many options. 3) check the details information under directory ./proc In this case, just go to the directory with the PID. However, should this be done mannually?

I've recently started learning web programming. I really like SVG + CSS, and was wondering -- why do people not design entire webpages in SVG? Context SVG provides beautiful primitive: quadratic + cubic bezier curves; lines + filling -- all as vector graphics SVG provides text SVG provides affine transformations Questions Are there examples of people designing entire websites as a giant SVG file? If not, what the limitations? Are there performance hits when using SVG primitives as opposed to divs/tables?

• Third Party Libraries and Technologies very Java Programmer must be aware of?

  I agree that this is a very subjective question but as a student of Java , I get suggested good libraries and technologies for Java by my mentors at work. For example, I was not aware of Google Guice for Dependency Injection, awesomeness of Java Reflection APIs, ORMs like Hibernate or stuffs you could do with libraries like Hadoop. I want to collect and share some of the libraries that exemplifies good java programming (so that beginners like me could code walk and emulate the coding practice), teach unique concepts to Java (for example Dependency Injections or ORM) and/or are really interesting libraries that a student like me would get to do interesting projects on (eg. Hadoop). I redited this question 3 times to make it more specific : ). I am sorry if I am really not clear in my intentions. But some kind of a list of good concepts and third party libraries for Java could really help some of my intern friends here at work. Thank you.

  I've been programming in Java for a few courses in the University and I have the following question: Is it methodologically accepted that every class should implement an interface? Is it considered bad practice not to do so? Can you describe a situation where it's not a good idea to use interfaces? Edit: Personally, I like the notion of using Interfaces for everything as a methodology and habit, even if it's not clearly beneficial. Eclipse automatically created a class file with all the methods, so it doesn't waste any time anyway.

  Consider this flow structure which I happen to use often: if ( hasPosts() ) { while ( hasPosts() ) { displayNextPost(); } } else { displayNoPostsContent(); } Are there any programming languages which have an optional else clause for while, which is to be run if the while loop is never entered? Thus, the code above would become: while ( hasPosts() ) { displayNextPost(); } else { displayNoPostsContent(); } I find it interesting that many languages have the do-while construct (run the while code once before checking the condition) yet I have never seen while-else addressed. There is precedent for running an N block of code based on what was run in N-1 block, such as the try-catch construct. I wasn't sure whether to post here or on programmers.SE. If this question is more appropriate there, then please move it. Thanks.
