• What's the best tool to use to automatically backup selected folders from Windows to my external hard drive?

  I have a 1TB external hard drive and I'd like to periodically schedule backups of my "Libraries" in Windows to the external drive. I'd prefer if it could detect what files have changed and periodically transfer them to the drive instead of I having to do it manually. Is there a way in Windows 7 to do this automatically? If not, what are some external tools (preferably free) that I can use for this? EDIT: I've used Windows back-up and I find it restrictive for detecting changes and backing up automatically. That's all that I'm aware of. My WD hard drive had something for this but the application doesn't work any more and it wasn't that good either. So, I wish to know what are my options.

• How to modify partitions after install?

  I wanted to have Ubuntu with full disk encryption on one big partition, and Windows on a small one. In 12.04, only the Server Edition installer has full disk encryption, so I used that and then installed ubuntu-desktop. When it asked for the size, I reduced it from ~999GB to ~750gb. Now after the install, on both gparted and disk utility I see /dev/sda2 taking ~931GB, and nothing unallocated, so I can't create a partition for windows. I got the size right, because when I right-click inside a folder, then hit 'properties', I see Free space: ~690GB (I don't know why it's not ~750GB, but at least it's not 900). The command df -h shows the same. So what can I do? Normally I would just resize a partition with gparted to create unallocated space, then create the partition. But here I have two problems: gparted does not seem to be showing the correct values, and also it says it does not support LUKS so I'm afraid it will mess things up. Any thoughts?

  I've noticed that the authors of "NetBeans Platform for Beginners" have started exposing the number of sales they have achieved. Below, notice the '304' (which will probably change quite quickly) at the lower left end of this screenshot: That's pretty good since the book has only existed for a few months and developers tend to share books they buy in PDF format. That probably means there are 300 teams of software developers around the world who are using the book, which is pretty awesome. (Though it would help the authors significantly, I'm sure, if individual developers on teams would buy the book, rather than sharing one between them. • How do I remove Windows Update uninstall files on Windows Server 2008?

  I'm running Windows Server 2008 Standard running in VMware. It has 2 disks: system disk: 16 GB data disk: 500 MB I installed Visual Studio 2008 SP1 + MSDN and some small tools and libraries that don't take much space. Over time the system disk's free space has been going down (I suspect because of regular system updates - NetFx (.NET), service packs, and regular updates). Questions 1 How do you remove Windows Update uninstall files from Windows Server 2008? Question 2 I also found lots of files in C:/Windows/Installer folder. Is it possible to determine which .msp file goes with which patch? I would like to delete some of them, because they do take a lot of space.

  Hi All, I have a friend that hosts his website on IIS and Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit. He has .WMV files and .MPG and others and some of these are 30 mb in size! He wonders why users complain the site is slow! So my question is how can we reduce the size of these movies? What software? What settings for bit-rate, etc? Is there free software? I can use either a Mac or a PC. Thoughts are appreciated.

• Setting up a domain with a dedicated server

  I have a dedicated server with a bunch of stuff on it already. Basically, I am accessing it now with the free domain I got when I purchased the server (http://example.com/directory, etc). I also have a second domain I want to use with a specific subdirectory (http://exampletwo.com/ should basically work as if I were under http://example.com/two, but it should use the exampletwo domain. I would assume I would change the A record of the second domain to the IP of the server, but how do I make it work with a subdirectory? I have full DNS control of the second domain but it is purchased on from a different registrar than the dedicated server. EDIT: It is a CentOS 5 server running Plesk/Virtuozoo.

  I have tried to reformat on Ubuntu using gparted, in Windows using their tool, and OSX using Disk Utility. I have also attempted by using the terminal but also failed there.   A common practice is to use non-preallocated virtual disks. Since they only grow as needed, it makes them perfect for fast backup, overallocation and creation speed. Since file systems are usually based on physical disks they have the tendency to use the whole area available1 in order to increase the speed2 or reliability3. I'm searching a filesystem that does the exact opposite : try to touch the minimum blocks need by an aggressive block reuse. I would happily trade some performance for space usage. There is already a similar question, but it is rather general. I have very specific goal : space-efficiency. 1. Like page caching uses all the free physical memory 2. • SFTP over double server hop

  I'm trying to work out a method to allow me to access files on an SFTP server than I cannot access from my local machine. Currently, I have to SSH to a remote server (it is in a certain IP block that the final SFTP server will accept from), then from there SFTP to the destination server. From there, I get the files I am interested in, thereby dropping them onto the middleman server, from which I can get the files either over a Samba share or with a direct scp. I also work in the reverse, where I drop the files onto the middleman, SSH to it then SFTP to the destination and put them into the appropriate folders. My goal is to shorten this. The unfortunate restrictions are that my machine is Windows (I use KiTTy and/or Cygwin) and I cannot modify the middleman server (or destination server) in any way. I am willing to use command line or GUI programs so long as it works and is free. Any ideas?

  My boss posed this problem to me: Encrypted: We need an encrypted database for miscellanious passwords we use at work that are currently only in people's head. Easily accessable: Someone needs to be able to quickly access specific passwords, possibly at hectic moments. This requires any sort of public key management (keeping it on a USB key in a sealed envelope?) to be relatively easy. Access control: The system should have groups of passwords where only specific people have access to specific groups. Recoverability: We need to make sure passwords from one group aren't lost even if the only users with direct access quit or pass away—hence we need some way where (for example) any two members of senior management may override the system (see the treshold link below) and retrieve all the passwords with their key. The first thing that jumped into my mind was some form of threshold and asymmetric cryptography but I don't want to reinvent the wheel, are there any solutions for this? Any software should preferrably be free and open-source.

• SIP Service to record all calls?

  I read an article that I can't find at the moment which detailed a way to have Google Voice point to a SIP phone number which forwards to your phone in order to take advantage of the SIP service in order to Have all calls use a data connection = no usage of cell-phone plan minutes. Record each and every conversation.* I really want to be able to accomplish this, primarily issue number 2, as all of the phone recorder tools in the Android Market essentially don't work for my Nexus One. I figure that I have one of two options with this. I could 1) use an existing (hopefully free) service which will do this for me or 2) I could set up a SIP service at my home. to somehow forward calls through my home server which will record the calls as well as forward calls to my cell phone. Obviously, the path of least resistance is the one I'd like to go down. Can anyone help me out with this? * I do understand that the legality of this varies from state to state here in the US.

The links keeps coming up through out the video in the black area (up and down of the video which are black). Thank god that links are on the black part of the video otherwise it would be hard to remove.    Also I want to remove the the last few seconds of the video. I don't want to crop that part. • Re-cased my computer now the power plug keeps shorting

  I've just re-cased my computer. I got the new case free and thought I'd be able to swap everything over myself but apparently I've done something wrong. I'm OK with components generally but wasn't totally confident about doing this. So, my question is, when setting up a new PC or moving old components into a new case, what could I have done which causes the power cable plug to short/fuse when I plug it in?. Is this likely to be an issue with the cables from my PSU, or could it be the internal case connectors? What steps would you take to diagnose the problem?   Possible Duplicate: What’s your favorite ticketing system? I was wondering if somebody could recommend me a very user friendly or simple general purpose ticketing/tech support system. I need something that is web based, preferably open-sourced/free software implemented using PHP, Ruby, Ruby on Rails or Java (as back end) with MySQL or PostgreSQL as database engine. I need something that is not development management oriented or project management oriented like Eventum or similar (random example), something to which the user can connect open a tech support request and be able to follow it until is solved or dropped.I need it to be open-sourced to be able to modify it if there is a need or extend it. I tried a number of such systems available and I found that osTicket or eTicket is something that it's close to what I need, but the code is somewhat flaky and some of the features are working badly or behaving strangely. Any thoughts/advice where to find something similar? Thanks!

  Is there a way to set up Ubuntu 12.04 (or earlier versions) so that all recommended updates are done automatically, say once a week? When I say automatically, I mean no password entry or user intervention required. This sounds like a stupid request, so let me tell why I'm asking. My grandfather knows nothing about computers; he uses his solely to read Yahoo! mail. I want to get rid of his clunky, spyware-ridden Windows XP and install Ubuntu. I want to set it up so when he turns the computer on, after a couple minutes, voila!, Yahoo! mail, already signed in, ready to go. The problem is I don't want to have to go over there every week or so and make sure everything is up-to-date, he hasn't accidentally installed any spyware, etc. So can this be done? Is this the best way to set things up for my grandfather? Are there other things I should be worried about when it comes to keeping things hassle-free for him? Please don't post anything like "why not teach him how to... blah blah blah". My grandfather is 80 years old and has made it clear email is the only thing he will ever use a computer for! Thanks!

On first sync, iTunes downloads the apps that are currently installed on my iPhone. But what about all those apps that I have bought and aren't currently installed? Is there a way to re-download all my apps into iTunes? Where can I see a listing of all the apps I've ever downloaded? (Update: Apparently not all purchased content is restored - some things are inexplicably missing. • Ubuntu live cd : black screen and blinking cursor

  I try to install ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. I can get to the purple screen on the live cd but then, if I choose "Installing Ubuntu", I have a black screen with a cursor blinking (and nothing else happens). My PC : acer aspire M3920, CPU i5-2300, 8 Gb RAM, NVIDIA gt 405. What I already tried : I tried with 12.04 and 13.04 daily build I tried with a live usb and with a live dvd I tried the following boot options : nomodset, acpi=off I googled a lot and it seems that it could be a graphic card problem. Do you know any other boot options that I could try ? UPDATE This is not a duplicate : I've tried all the common boot options (nomodeset, noacpi...) and it doesn't change anything. With the option "no splash" (instead of "quiet splash"), I can see what happens before the forever-blinking cursor : [sdg] no caching mode present [sdg] assuming drive cache : write trough ata8.00: excetion Emask 0x52 ... frozen ata8 : SError : { RecovData RecovComm UnrecovData...} ata8.00 : failed command : IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE ... ata8.00 : status : { DRDY } ata8 : hard resetting link Does somebody know what it means ? N.B. astonishingly, Puppy Linux boots fine (but Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu do not) Solution In fact, it was not a graphic card problem. I had to disconnect the dvd drive and connect it to another free sata connector (I don't really understand why Ubuntu had trouble with this connector and Windows 7 not). After that, everything worked fine.

• Can the JVM(Oracle) run into an OutOfMemory error if the heap size is below the max?

  I am running a Tomcat site(with an NGinx front end) that seems to be randomly running out of memory even though the max heap size is pretty large. My question is is it possible for the JVM to get an OutOfMemory error even if the heap size is significantly less than -Xmx? For instance, here is a snapshot I took just 15 seconds before an OutOfMemory error: Tue Dec 18 23:13:28 JST 2012 Free memory: 162.31 MB Total memory: 727.75 MB Max memory: 3808.00 MB I guess theoretically it's possible that my code generated 3 gigs worth of objects in 15 seconds, but I highly doubt it. It seems like the JVM was unable to grow the heap even though it theoretically had room....Is it possible that other processes started using memory to the point that the JVM could not grow? I am running 64-bit Oracle Hotspot on a 64 bit vm running CentOS 5 with 6 gigs of ram.

• How to put fear of God (law) into Wi-Fi hacking neighbors [closed]

  I live in an apartment and some new guys have apparently moved into one of the apartments. They have been shamelessly hacking into my WiFi. Mine was initially a WEP encrypted network and out of laziness I just limited and reserved the IPS on my router for the people in my house. Yesterday I had to free up an IP for a guest in my house but before he could join the network these guys connected in. I have changed my encryption to WPA2 and hope they dont have the hardware/patience required to hack into it, but there are many wi-fi networks in my apartment most of which are secured using WEP. I don't really want to call the police on them. Is there any way to deter them from misusing other people's wi-fi ? I have gone through I think someone else has access to my wireless network. What next? but I have already taken the steps mentioned there.
