  I just lost time trying to hide a CSS border in a third-party control, so it’s worth a quick post to help others avoid similar frustration. I could plainly see in the Internet Explorer 8 developer tool that an unwanted border in the Telerik RadRotator   was coming from the style classes named .RadRotator_Web20 and .rrClipRegion. • In the Groove: PASS Board Year 1, Q3

  It's nine months into my first year on the PASS Board and I feel like I've found my rhythm. I've accomplished one of the goals I set out for the year and have made progress on others. Here's a recap of the last few months. Anti-Harassment Policy & Process Completed In April I began work on a Code of Conduct for the PASS Summit. The Board had several good discussions and various PASS members provided feedback. You can read more about that in this blog post. Since the document was focused on issues of harassment we renamed it the "Anti-Harassment Policy " and it was approved by the Board in August. The next step was to refine the guideliness and process for enforcement of the AHP. A subcommittee worked on this and presented an update to the Board at the September meeting. You can read more about that in this post, and you can find the process document here. Global Growth Expanding PASS' reach and making the organization relevant to SQL Server communities around the world has been a focus of the Board's work in 2012. We took the Global Growth initiative out to the community for feedback, and everyone on the Board participated, via Twitter chats, Town Hall meetings, feedback forums and in-person discussions. This community participation helped shape and refine our plans. Implementing the vision for Global Growth goes across all portfolios. The Virtual Chapters are well-positioned to help the organization move forward in this area. One outcome of the Global Growth discussions with the community is the expansion of two of the VCs from country-specific to language-specific. Thanks to the leadership in Brazil & Mexico for taking the lead here. I look forward to continued success for the Portuguese- and Spanish-language Virtual Chapters. Together with the Global Chinese VC PASS is off to a good start in making the VC's truly global. Virtual Chapters The VCs continue to grow and expand. Volunteers recently rebooted the Azure and Virutalization VCs, and a new  Education VC will be launching soon. Every week VCs offer excellent free training on a variety of topics. It's the dedication of the VC leaders and volunteers that make all this possible and I thank them for it. Board meeting The Board had an in-person meeting in September in San Diego, CA.. As usual we covered a number of topics including governance changes to support Global Growth, the upcoming Summit, 2013 events and the (then) upcoming PASS election. Next Up Much of the last couple of months has been focused on preparing for the PASS Summit in Seattle Nov. 6-9. This event is on Thursday at 11:30. Community Appreciation Party Thursday evening don't miss this event thanking all of you for everthing you do for PASS and the community. • usb devices unacessible

  I have a funny thing happening with my USB devices. They are detected and show up as they should but I cannot write to them, I can read the files in them. I cannot change the Group folder access. It keeps reverting to none when I try change it. However when I start a guest session and copy a screen shot to the USB I can, but cannot in my regular administration session. Why cannot I change the option and why does it behave properly in a guest session but not normally? Anyone know how to help me out here? I am using Ubuntu 12.04, 32-bit.

• I’m now a SQL Server Microsoft Certified Master

  What a day, well what a week really. I found out last week that I passed the Microsoft Certified Master Exam and that I needed to decide to sit the Lab part next. I decided to get it done in a few days of down time I have before going to the MVP summit so scheduled it for today. Five and half hours later I had finished, after a few visits to the toilet. • Being prepared for a code review as a developer?

  I am looking for some ideas here. I read the article How should code reviews be Carried Out and Code Reviews, what are the advantages? which were very informative but I still need more clarity on the question below. My Question is, Being the target developer, can you suggest some best practices a developer can incorporate before his code is going get reviewed. Currently I practice the following methods PPT for a logical flow Detailed comments. Issue: Even though I have implemented the above practices, they do not help on the review. The problem I faced is, when certain logic is referred, I keep searching for the implementation and the flow and too much time is wasted in the process and I get on people’s nerve. I think a lot of developers would be going through what I am going through as well.

• Drawing graphics in Java game

  I am quite new to game development, so here is a question (maybe a stupid one): In my sidescroller i have a bunch of different graphics objects that i need to draw (player, background tiles, creatures, projectiles etc). Most tutorials i've read so far show that each object has its own draw method, which is then called from some other method. What if I had one method that does all the drawing? Lets say i keep all my objects in an array or queue (or multiple arrays) and then go through each of them, get an image and draw it. So basically would it be better (and why) to have each object have its own draw method or one method that does all the drawing? Or does it matter at all? I feel like the second option is more comfortable, because then all the stuff to do with drawing would be in one place...

• Can and should a game design be patented?

  I have an idea for a game that I want to develop and I feel is unique, and I'm wondering if I should patent it. I read on the web that games can be patented, but just because it can be done doesn't mean that it makes sense to do it. I actually don't really want patent it (it's expensive, a hassle and I don't believe in patenting of ideas... unless it's something truly revolutionary). However, I'm concerned a bigger company could come along, with more experienced game designers and developers and steal the idea.

• How Do I interpret HDD S.M.A.R.T Results?

  My laptop has recently started to become a bit unreliable, and for some reason I started to suspect that my HDD was starting to fail. After a bit of hunting on the internet, I found Ubuntu's Disk Utility in the System menu and ran the long SMART diagnostics from this. However, since the documentation for Disk Utility is very poor (palimpsest?), I'm not sure how to interpret the results: For example, the Read Error Rate is over 50 million (!), yet the Assessment is rated "Good". So would someone mind explaining to me how to interpret the results of these tests (especially the Normalized, Worst, Threshold and Value numbers)? And maybe tell me what they think of the results I got for my HDD? (Thanks)

• Downloading specific video renditions in WebCenter Content

  I recently had a question come up on one of my previous blog articles about downloading a specific video rendition.  When accessing image renditions, you simply need to pass in the 'Rendition=<rendition name>' parameter on the GET_FILE service and it will be returned.  But when you try that with videos, you get the error message, "Unable to download '<Content ID>'. The rendition or attachment '<Rendition Name>' could not be found in the list manifest of the revision with internal revision ID '<dID>'. [Read More]

• Reviewing Orace ADF Enterprise Application Development Made Simple Book

  Although I was a technical reviewer of Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development-Made Simple (by Sten Vesterli) it is nice to get the finished article in your hands as a real tangible book. Personally, on a sun lounger with a Dan Brown book I can read 300 pages a day, but technical books are a different beast and I find it hard to get through them with the same vigour.  However, I'm up to chapter 7 in Sten's book and so far it's holding my interest.  He writes in an almost conversational tone and I really like the comparisons to "real world" concepts - like page templates being like gingerbread cookie cutters.  Personally I like to be able to compare or size up a new concept against something I already know. I'll post a full review next week but the good news is 212 pages in and I'm still reading!

• Adjust resolution in xfce4 virtualbox guest guest

  I have Virtualbox 4.1.2_ubuntur3859 installed on an Ubuntu 11.10 host, running a guest ubuntu server 10.04 with xfce4 and xorg installed with no-install-recommends. I have installed guest additions, but the maximum resolution in the display settings is 800x600. I have read related questions: How to change resolution of the VirtualBox (Ubuntu guest and host)? Higher screen resolution in VirtualBox? upgrading VirtualBox 3.2.10 breaks my guest Ubuntu screen resolution Ubuntu as guest OS (with Vista host) stuck at 800x600 resolution but none contain the solution to my issue. Am I missing any particular packages that would allow me to change resolution? I would like to keep the machine as small as possible.

  This weekend I will be speaking at the NYC SQL Saturday . The whole event was supposed to be BI focused but now the schedule shows a lot of non BI stuff as well. I will be presenting SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services Programming , one of my favorite topics to present on. It seems that the event if fully booked. • Linux DD command partition -to- partition

  I just used the DD command to copy the contents of one partition over to another partition on another drive, like this: dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdb2 bs=4096 conv=noerror sda2 partition was 66GB and sdb2 was 250GB. I read that by doing this the extra space on the drive I am copying to will be wasted, is this true? I wasn't worried about loosing the extra space for the time being however, I just ran: sudo kill -USR1 (PID) to view the current status of DD and it has written over 66GB of data, will it continue to write data until it gets to 250GB? If so, is there a way to stop the process without corrupting it as waiting for it to write blank space seems like a waste of time.

  Whenever I attempt to make a record for *.schneiderdonnelly.com.au and CNAME it, I get two errors: You can't mix CNAME/MX records together using the same hostname. Domain root's cannot be CNAME's, however you can web-forward this record to www.schneiderdonnelly.com.au instead for the same effect. I've read it's possible so why can't I make it work? • How to efficiently preserve a really big navigation history in Firefox?

  When I was using Mac, my Firefox stored items in its history for really long times. Sometimes I needed to find a link to a site I have seen two years ago and it found it! Also, the autocomplete in the Firefox bar is really great, so a long history and the autocompleting yield a wonderful feature to me. Unfortunately, it seems this does not happen in Ubuntu's Firefox. I looked for solutions but I just got some Firefox developers saying the option of expanding history is out for performance issues and one is well advised to not try to change it (which read to me as saying "we cannot make it work well so we limit the scope"). Anyway, my question is: is there a way of efficiently expand the size of Firefox history? Sorry for my bitterness, but a solution with strings attached (mostly say that I should not do it, like this addon) is not solution for me. Does someone have the same need of mine and found a solution?

  Hard to believe it’s been so long, but it was almost 4 years ago when I published Join the Dark Side of Visual Studio .
