  • ssh connection with full tab key support

    I have Ubuntu 10.04 installation. When I open terminal, tab key works fine e.g. i type "apt-get install mysql" then press tab and see all options. But when I connect via ssh - tab key works only before first space. So it will do nothing in above example. I tried connect with different clients (ssh, putty, etc), and always same behavior. My question is: how to make tab key work properly? Is problem in server or client?

  • Can files deleted on an ecnrypted drive be restored?

    Hi. There are ways to restore files, deleted from the system by default, I'm not sure about the way they work but I guess thet read content, that has not been overwritten. On the other hand, there are programs (e.g. TrueCrypt), that encrypt disks, claiming that it wouldn't be possible to tell apart random data and file contents on such a disk without a password. Therefore I think that files, deleted from such disks can't be restored. Is that correct? I know one way to find out would be to try it, but there is a possibility, that I would just pick the wrong restoring software. Moreover, I'm more interested in theorethical explanation why it would/wouldn't be possible. Thanks

  • dual-boot does not work

    I have a PC with linux-mint installed on it. I wanted to install win-7 along-side, for some reasones. what I have done is: create a bootable USB-stick with Ubontu ios. restarted the computer, this time with Ubuntu (running from my disk-on-key). created a partition on the main HD using GPart. formated the partition to NTFS. restarted the computer, this time through the installation CD for win-7. installed win-7 with normal settings. that all worked, and I'm writing this through win-7. the thing is - when I boot my system, I don't get to choose what OS to run. I checked the settings in msconfig, and in boot label it has just win-7. how can I boot linux?

  • Tool to create unscaled call-out from a thumbnail image?

    I'm creating an online tutorial for some software and need to include screenshots. In particular, I want to highlight the position and appearance of a given control in a large screen. Given that I haven't got the space to show the screen at full resolution (at least, not alongside the tutorial text), I figured I would use a kind of call-out from a thumbnail. Here's my poor first effort, made in Paint.NET: Given how long this took me to craft, I'd really like to find a tool to speed things up (and make them look a little more professional!). Preferably a free one, too - or one that has a downloadable trial. The exact style it produces isn't that important, provided it achieves the desired effect. Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Mal. P.S.     I have a sheet that looks something like this: Sheet 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 1 6 2 3 5 3 4 2 4 9 4 5 6 4 6 6 7 5 3 3 3 10 8 4 8 8 9 4 11 12 12 6 10 11 8 5 5 4 9 4 7 6 What I would like to be able to do is find the average difference and direction between values in each column. For example, the first 4 rows would look like: Average Difference # + Movements # -Movements 1 2 2 1 0 3 4 (2+5+5)/3 2 1 Blanks represent N/A values due to insufficient information, and differences are calculated successively i.e. col2-col1, col3-col2, col4-col3 If I just take the differences and make a duplicate table with the formula =C2-B2 copied across issues arise whenever there is a blank space between two values or at the beginning of the row. Is there an easy way to fix this or another way to do this that I might be missing?

    While imaging some computers today, I started to wonder... what if two LAN MAC addresses on two different computers matched?... That would cause some problems. I later came to understand that the MAC address' 48-bit address space contains potentially 248 or 281,474,976,710,656 possible MAC addresses. [ in other-words, a lot of networking devices ] How are these MAC addresses determined? Will we ever run out of them? ( I know the second question is speculation, but there are a lot of devices that require a mac addresses...) Do MAC addresses get recycled?

  • How do I find all text with particular background color?

    I have a LibreOffice Writer document that has undergone a process of editing, and sections of the text that needed to be rewritten were highlighted in yellow. As I fixed those sections, I removed the yellow highlight. Now, I want to make sure there are no remaining areas of highlighted text that have not been fixed or possibly the highlight was not removed. It's many hundreds of pages, so a manual scan is unfeasible. Also, it might be that one space or one character got accidentally left highlighted, and I want to ensure I've accounted for them all. How can I search the document to find all instances where text has been highlighted?

  • After moving our Servers to a virtual environment using VMware - SQL timeouts came in, why?

    We moved our servers to a virtual cloud (VMware) where only our servers are in. But as soon as we finished migrating everything we are fighting against SQL Timeouts and machine slowdowns we can't explain. Even though we ~ doubled the servers capacity while switching from physical to virtual. Now I googled and found that we are not alone. People are complaining about poor performance after moving to a cloud managed by VMware. Are there any known issues? Sometimes our services can't access a disk or SQL receives a timeout and we have no idea why.

  • How to share datastores between multiple exchange servers?

    I have an Exchange 2003 box that is seriously overstressed. I want to transfer its duties to a new and faster box. I don't cannot suffer downtime, so I have to do this stuff live. Here's what I plan to do: Install Exchange 2003 on the new server Set up the new server, so it will accept requests from users for their mailboxes I want to do as little manual set up as possible, because that 'll eat up my time and is too error prone Than I want to transfer my datastores one by one to the new server and have those users (once the datastore in the new server is up and running) to get their data from the new server (without them noticing) I don't have to transfer all the datastores, some of them need to stay on the old box (because I'm still waiting for extra HD space to arrive from the supplier) What steps do I need to follow to do this? The new box has never seen this domain before, the old exchange server is not the DC, we have a dedicated DC.

  • Program that converts Windows 7 install files into iso

    I recently got to build a custom image of Windows 7 and I can successfully install it on other computers. The problem I have is right now I have to do the installs from a bootable hard drive. I would much rather do this from a disk or ISO. I know there is a program that will take the Windows 7 system files and convert it to ISO image, but I can't think of it. Otherwise, could I just simply burn the files to a DVD? Would that work?

  • wmp12 refuses to convert files when syncing

    I have quite a large music collection of MP3s at 320kbps and some WMA files at various bitrates. I'm trying to sync some of them to my HTC Desire and am quickly running out of space. WMP12 has options to set, per device you wish to sync, to auto convert to a lower bitrate whilst syncing. I have set this to auto convert files to a maximum bitrate of 192kbps, that way I can fit more music on the device but keep the files on my PC at the higher rate. See these screens to see that it's set up correctly. Only problem is, surprise surprise for a Microsoft product, it doesn't actually work. Any file that is greater than 192kbps, MP3 or WMA simply fails, doesn't get converted or copied to the device. The message in the sync log displays the rather unhelpful message "error" and that's it. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not really looking for alternative software solutions I'd like to get this working since that's what it's supposed to do.

  • How to prevent Google Toolbar being installed in Portable Firefox?

    Recently, the campus computers installed Google Toolbar in Firefox. Now, I have no use for this toolbar, so I don't want it there. For that and other reasons, I installed Portable Firefox on a USB stick and use that instead. Somehow, when I log into one of these machines and start Portable Firefox, guess what? "Thank you for installing Google Toolbar." No! I don't want some IT guy choosing what extensions to install on my personal Firefox on my USB stick. I can uninstall it but next time I log in, it comes right back. I suppose PF is for some reason reading things from the local disk, or there's some kind of background process installing it? How do I prevent extensions being installed without my consent?

    I've installed CAT5e cable and gigabit switches in my house with the goal of having an "always-on" file server in the loft, accessible to both my macbook and my partner's Windows box. I'd like to find a solution which: uses minimal power. allows me to access as much disk bandwidth as possible. provides glitch-free file access to both MacOS and Windows. is as cheap as possible, while remaining reliable. Optional, but desirable extras: software or hardware RAID; open source solutions. A SheevaPlug with eSATA seems one possibility, but I'm sure there are any number of other good options.

  • ISCSI sessions appear from nowhere

    Hi, I am using Win2008 32bit Ent. running in Hyper-V with 2 LUNs over ISCSI connection (this is a MS cluster with one LUN being quorum and second as a storage). In ISCSI - target - details I see multiple sessions from same target (currently 7), however I am not sure where they are coming from as I have only one virtual NIC on this server. Sure enough 2 LUNs appear 7 times each in device manager or in disk manager. On the cluster partner however, I do not see that problem. There is only one session per target. Installing MPIO makes only difference - I am getting 8 sessions instead of 7 once I reboot. Does any one know what can cause this behavior?

  • Disaster - partitions lost, data seemingly alive, how to recover?

    I've used TestDisk and it's written my old partition structure of a ~20GiB partition for Vista, ~25GiB partition for 7 (but it now shows up as unallocated) and a ~400GiB partition for documents. What it's meant to be is a 30GiB partition for 7, some unallocated space, and a ~400GiB partition for documents. So currently, I have access to all my documents, but not any of the programs I've installed on C:, or AppData, because my boot partition is now supposedly a 20GB vista partition. I've tried using my Windows 7 install disc's repair function, but that did nothing beyond wasting about 10 minutes of my time. I'm currently posting from an Ubuntu live CD. Any help?

  • Disable writing RAID degraded mode

    I have a RAID5 with 5 disks on my machine and suspect the motherboard chipset to fail at some points and make my raid going in degraded mode. Last time it happened I noticed it on the failure of the 2nd drive connected to the same chipset and lost a lot of data. So I would like to prevent this, and especially I would like to have mdadm disable writes on the raid if one of the disk fails. So that in between I get notified, I recover and can use my system again. Sadly I could not find it in man mdadm so I was wondering if this is possible via a tool or hidden option since for me it looks like a standard feature of a RAID system. If this is not possible I would also be happy with a solution to stop the raid if degraded.

Every solution I've found requires that a row be highlighted before inserting a new row.   • Win 7: How can I resize a window to make it much bigger than my screen?

    I have a window that I'd like to make much bigger than my physical screen (explanation of why below). I hit Alt+Space, M, and then press the Up arrow to move the title bar above the physical top of my screen. However, when I press Enter to set it, the title bar snaps back to the top of my screen. How can I prevent this from happening? Background: I want to get a hi-res image of a neighborhood map so that it can be printed to a poster. Google Earth has a "Save as JPG" feature, which will save the map in the window to a file. The bigger the window, the bigger the JPG; so, I'm trying to make the window as big as I can. Alternate suggestions welcome.

    at my 450gb fat32 partition, a directory has a wrong content after improper usb drive disconnect; was: /files (total 250gb) /files/folder/ /files/folder2/ /files/somethn.gs Now: /files/weir?d?name, 5 mb Windows and Linux are saying that most (400 of 450gb) disk space is occupied, but sum of all files/dirs is about 130gb, so it seems that files are still there?. No write attempts since discovery; Rejected tools/methods: chkdsk(Windows7): checking completed, but no changes. fsck.vfat: attempted to ruin drive even more (there is a lot of LFN and unicode names). EasyRecovery. Didn't see the target folder (maybe wrong scan options? tried best match, but not raw scan - it would take days since the drive is usb 5200 rpm..).

  • Defrag/TRIM settings for hybrid hard drive?

    I recently acquired a momentus XT hybrid hard drive. This is a tradition spinning HDD with a small SSD portion for frequently used files. Normally, you are not supposed to defrag SSDs, as it does not help performance and can significantly reduce the life of the drive. But you do need to defrag an HDD to keep good performance. So where does that leave us for hybrid drives? Do I need to turn off defragging in Windows to preserve the SSD portion? Is the on-disk controller smart enough to handle defragging correctly? Is there some utility I need to set it up that I missed? Additionally, for SSDs you normally want to check for and enable TRIM support... but this makes no sense for a HDDs. Where does that leave us for hybrid drives? Should I try to enable TRIM or not?

  • How to meet Windows 8 upgrade's 20 GB requirement on a 40 GB SSD with a 22 GB Windows 7 install?

    A PC I have has Windows 7 installed on a 40 GB SSD, and I bought a Windows 8 upgrade for it. The current Windows folder on it however is 22 GB, that's after removing hibernation, turning off the pagefile and removing all extra programs/features. So even if I purge every other file and folder, the Windows folder itself takes more than half the disk. The PC also has a 1 TB HDD, but the upgrade installer didn't give me any options about choosing another drive. So, is my only option to reinstall Windows 7 on a larger drive, then proceed with the Windows 8 upgrade? Or is there anything I can remove from the Windows folder that while might be dangerous for long term usage, is fine for the few minutes I need to get Windows 8 installing?

  • Virtualbox: Raw linux partition not booting

    I have a dual-boot laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. I am trying to boot the ubuntu partition from windows using Virtualbox. I have successfully created the .vmdk, and created the virtual machine. However, I can't get it to boot (in Virtualbox). All I get is a black screen with the cursor in the top left. I wonder if I'm specifying the partitions correctly. My Ubuntu install has 3 partitions: \, \boot, \home. No swap partition. These are all in Disk 0, partitions 3,4,5 respectively. The command I used to create the .vmdk is: VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename C:\Users\abalter\.virtualbox\ubuntu.vmdk -rawdisk \\.\PhysicalDrive0 -partitions 3,4,5 Then I create a virtual machine based on that .vmdk. Why won't it boot?

  • Economical way to get many harddrives into rack mount?

    Hi everyone, Please bear with me as being a bit of a newcomer at 19" rack-mounted equipment. I've thought a fair bit lately about the best way of getting 4x or 6x of 2.5" hard drives into my rack and are right now currently slightly confused about would be the best (economical) solution. After scouting the market, I've found this type of disk array units that offers built in RAID and a lot of drive slots and a truckload of geek cred, but at a price that just isn't going to fit in my budget. I've also found these type of cute adapters that takes two 2.5" drives in one 3.5" slot, but I will obviously need a chassie with a lot of 3.5" spaces in order to make it work. So what is the most economical way to house my harddrives in my rack?

  • I'm having two Windows 7 installed and running in my laptop. How can I delete the other one?

    I have another concern with my laptop. When I had a problem with the microphone, I tried to restore the system. But sadly, I had a mistake with the process and accidentally it was formatted. Its a built in laptop. (Toshiba m840, Windows 7, 64 bit) After the format process, programs were automatically installed. Until a friend of mine told me that I might have 2 Windows installed already. When we checked the program, he was right. I'm having 2 program files folders, which means I really have 2 Windows installed and running in my laptop. Supposed to be, there should be only 1 right? Can anyone help me how to delete the other Windows? Because I think it is occupying much space in the hard drive. They say it could make my laptop become slower.
