• How does one check whether the OS X "disabled" flag for launchd services is set?

  According to the man page for launchctl (emphasis mine):    -w   Overrides the Disabled key and sets it to false. In previous versions, this option would modify the configuration file. Now the state of the Disabled key is stored elsewhere on-disk. Because the current state of the disabled flag is no longer set in the .plist file itself, checking for the Disabled key is no longer an accurate way to tell if the service will run on next boot. Where is this "elsewhere on-disk"? More to the point (and more importantly), how does one check whether this flag is set? Also, is it possible to set a service to run on next boot without forcing it to start immediately (as with launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/my-service.plist)?

• Simple Architecture Verification

  I just made an architecture for an application with the function of scoring, saving and loading tennis games. The architecture has 2 kinds of elements: components & layers. Components: Standalone elements that can be consumed by other components or by layers. They might also consume functionality from the model/bottom layer. Layers: Software components whose functionality rests on previous layers (except for the model layer). -Layers: -Models: Data and it's behavior. -Controllers: A layer that allows interaction between the views and the models. -Views: The presentation layer for interacting with the user. -Components: -Persistence: Makes sure the game data can be stored away for later retrieval. -Time Machine: Records changes in the game through time so it's possible to navigate the game back and forth. -Settings: Contains the settings that determine how some of the game logic will apply. -Game Engine: Contains all the game logic, which it applies to the game data to determine the path the game should take. Move through game history and see how the scoreboard changes as the game evolves. Tie-breaks must be properly managed. Games must be classified by hit-type. Every point can be modified. Match name and player names must be stored. Game logic must be configurable by the user. I would really appreciate any kind of advice or comments on this architecture. • Importing tab delimited file into array in Visual Basic 2013 [migrated]

  I am needing to import a tab delimited text file that has 11 columns and an unknown number of rows (always minimum 3 rows). I would like to import this text file as an array and be able to call data from it as needed, throughout my project. And then, to make things more difficult, I need to replace items in the array, and even add more rows to it as the project goes on (all at runtime). Hopefully someone can suggest code corrections or useful methods. I'm hoping to use something like the array style sMyStrings(3,2), which I believe would be the easiest way to control my data. Any help is gladly appreciated, and worthy of a slab of beer. • Logic / Render phases with a single thread

  The question I have may generate different opinions from different developers, but I'd still like to have an answer on this. Its all about the updating and rendering steps of the game loop, and their use under multi and single threaded environments. Currently, there is one thread running, which takes care of sequentially executing events , logic and rendering. Sometimes, the logic part may wish to change the game state to something else, and in between do some loading of files. The result is that the game hangs completely while loading, and then proceeds to normal rendering of the new state. To go around this, i could make another thread, do the loading there while the main thread renders a smooth loading animation, and then proceed normally. The real question is about if i don't create another thread. I could refresh the screen from the logic thread, and provide some basic loading screen, which could be not so smoothly updated while the files load. In fact, this approach is not loved by a lot of developers, as it scrambles render code in the logic step, which may cause problems of different sorts.. Hope its clear!

• Access - Force Form Refresh on New Record

  Let me set the stage here a bit: I have an Access project with various buttons, triggers, macros, etc. I needed an Appointment Date field to only show when the button APPOINTMENT MADE is toggled ON. This works great. The problem arises when you submit a form with the APPOINTMENT MADE toggled. Once the record is inserted, the Access file clears all fields, but leaves the Appointment Date enabled, when it should be disabled by default. I have tried the Current, Load, Before Insert, After Insert and many other options on the FORM properties. Am I missing a simple way to force a refresh so the field goes back to it's default DISABLED? Thanks in advance!

• Site failing randomly - could it be Cloudflare or something weird in the JS?

  I've been working on a simple site that uses javascript to fade through some fullscreen background images as well as some other simple animations. I've tested the site on Chrome, Safari, FF and Opera on OSX, IE8+ on Win7 and Chrome & FF on Ubuntu and everything looks as I'd expect it to. However, I've had reports of the site failing to load (stops at the stage where the background fades up) on Safari and Chrome on OSX and Win. I can't replicate this on any setup so I'm finding it impossible to troubleshoot. Google's instant preview shows the site fine as does most of the options at browsershots.org so I'm really scratching my head. I'm running the site's traffic through Cloudflare and I'm wondering whether anyone can see (or knows from other sites) why Cloudflare might be mangling the JS or causing a problem somehow (I don't get any errors in the JS error console). Of course, if you can replicate the problem on your machine and can suggest an area to look at that would be amazing but I'm hoping that, like me, you don't see any problem with the site! • pros-cons of separate hosting accounts versus using addon domain

  Folks: For historical reasons, I have "Site A" on "Hosting Account A", and "Site B" on "Account B", totally independent accounts with the same vendor, Bluehost. Both are primary domains. Now that Hosting Account B is just about to expire, I'm considering letting it disappear and moving Site B to an Addon domain on "Account A". Both sites are non-commercial, narrow-interest, very-low-traffic, hundreds of page views per month. The file weights for the sites are non-trivial, especially as I like to install specialized CMSs in subdomains. Since Bluehost allows unlimited hosting space there should be no issue with the file load, except I've seen hints of an issue with total file count, maybe 50k files -- which I'm not currently close to hitting, but might eventually. My question: what are the pros and cons of using separate accounts versus hosting Site B as an addon domain? Obviously, using a single account is cheaper by half, and I know that my authoring environment (DreamWeaver CS5) complains when it detects nested source trees, telling me "Synchronization" might fail in such cases, but I don't depend on this feature. What other factors should I consider? TIA

• Can I use a 302 redirect to serve up static content from a url with escaped_fragment?

  We would like to serve up seo-friendly ajax-driven content. We are following this documentation. Has anyone ever tried to write a 302 redirect into the htaccess file, that takes the '?_escaped_fragment=' string and send that to a static page? For example /snapshot/yourfilename/ How will Google react to this? I've gone through the documentation and it's not very clear. The below quote is from Google's documentation this is what I find. I'm not sure if they are saying that you can redirect the _escaped_fragment_ url to a different static page, or if this is to redirect the hashtag URL to static content? Thoughts? From Google's site: Question: Can I use redirects to point the crawler at my static content? Redirects are okay to use, as long as they eventually get you to a page that's equivalent to what the user would see on the #! version of the page. This may be more convenient for some webmasters than serving up the content directly. If you choose this approach, please keep the following in mind: Compared to serving the content directly, using redirects will result in extra traffic because the crawler has to follow redirects to get the content. This will result in a somewhat higher number of fetches/second in crawl activity. • How to create a template with contact info in Windows Live Mail?

  Is it possible to create a template to use in Windows Live mail which I can load peoples details into from my contact list? I currently send emails to people but I have to manually view them in the address book, then copy there details into an email. What I would like is to open the template, select the email address and everything else is auto completed, such as first name, address etc. These would go in set fields which I set within the template. Is this possible? I am willing to switch to another mail account if needed but I would prefer it to be in Windows Live Mail. Thank you. :)

• Finding the most common errors in event logs using Powershell.

  I have the event logs for one of our servers locally in .evtx format. I can load the log file into PS using the command: Get-WinEvent -Path D:\Desktop\serverlogs.evtx What I would like to do is on the Message field group events where the text matches by a certain percent (say 80% the same). As we have stacktraces for errors in the details which will be the same, but we also log the client's IP, url that was accessed which will likely be different. I want to group them so that I can work out the most common errors to prioritize fixing them and as there are 25,000+ errors in the log file I would rather not do it manually. I think I can work out how to do most of this, but am not sure how I could do the 'group fields which are mostly the same' part, does powershell have anything like this built in?

• How to upgrade a single instance's size without downtime

  I'm afraid there may not be a way to do this since we're not load balancing, but I'd like to know if there is any way to upgrade an EC2 EBS backed instance to a larger size without downtime. First of all, we have everything on one instance: both our app and our database (mongodb). This is along the lines i'm thinking: I know you can create snapshots of your EBS and an AMI of your instance. We already have an AMI and we create hourly snapshots. If I spin up a new separate instance of a larger size and then implement (not sure what the right term is here) the snapshots so that our database is up to date, then I could switch the A record of our domain from the old ip address to the new one. However, I'm afraid that after copying over the data from the snapshot, by the time it takes to change the A record and have that change propagate, the data could potentially be stale. Is there a way to prevent this, and is there a better way to do this than I am suggesting?

  I am in the situation to give our marketing department the opportunity to maintain their redirects by their own. Until now, they passed the information to the IT department and we maintained it for them in nginx.conf. Some of these guys are quite familiar with redirections in IIS or even in apache but it is no option to give them direct access to the nginx configuration. I see, that there is no nginx support for .htaccess files which I could give access to and I would also prefer not to grant write access to an conf-file that nginx includes. I expect, that our marketing will break our nginx setup within hours... Is there a secure possibility without giving them access our the heart of our load balancer?

• Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 Update Available

  Oracle has released an update to the Oracle R Distribution, an Oracle-supported distribution of open source R. Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 now contains the ability to dynamically link the following libraries on both Windows and Linux: The Intel Math Kernel Library (MKL) on Intel chips The AMD Core Math Library (ACML) on AMD chips To take advantage of the performance enhancements provided by Intel MKL or AMD ACML in Oracle R Distribution, simply add the MKL or ACML shared library directory to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH system environment variable. This automatically enables MKL or ACML to make use of all available processors, vastly speeding up linear algebra computations and eliminating the need to recompile R.  Even on a single core, the optimized algorithms in the Intel MKL libraries are faster than using R's standard BLAS library. Open-source R is linked to NetLib's BLAS libraries, but they are not multi-threaded and only use one core. While R's internal BLAS are efficient for most computations, it's possible to recompile R to link to a different, multi-threaded BLAS library to improve performance on eligible calculations. Compiling and linking to R yourself can be involved, but for many, the significantly improved calculation speed justifies the effort. Oracle R Distribution notably simplifies the process of using external math libraries by enabling R to auto-load MKL or ACML. For R commands that don't link to BLAS code, taking advantage of database parallelism using embedded R execution in Oracle R Enterprise is the route to improved performance. Another help, I used a code below to drop my memory caches in every hour. 0 * * * * /root/clearcache.sh #!/bin/sh sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches But 1st 15 in every hour my server remain so slow after cleaning the caches. My sites do not load during every hour in 1st 15 minutes. In another way if I restart my server then also caches are removed. So I decided to restart my server in every 2 days to drop my caches. Will it be helpful to restart? Or is there any other way to drop my memory caches that will not down my server?

• Blender Render Cycles

  I get a very poor Render in cycles. Not just minor problems, but just a cloud of of black and white dots and no contour at all. I read a lot about this now and couldn't get it to work. Does anybody know how to get the settings right. Or better what do I have to pay attention to get better renders. I also tried external renderer like Lux, which increased my CPU usage to 98 % (just the default cube and clicking on Lux and load materials). Is this normal and what could i do to improve that. I have various versions of Blender (2.61,2.62,2.63) on Mac OS X. Thanks for the time.

• File server share access intermittent/slow/machine unstable: win2k8r2

  I have a file server running Win2k8R2 on an older HP DL380G4. It has nothing set up on it other than file sharing. All drivers/firmware/updates installed. The file server is used as a dump for a bunch of test machines - so essentially a lot of small files are being written to it. It was working fine until it started showing the following symptoms: Shares became either very slow/intermittent or could not access them at all. Logging in the the server, you could use it like normal but windows would start freezing and eventually you had to hard reboot it because nothing was responsive. After rebooting, it would work fine for 20min-2hours and then degrade into this broken state again. Some info after investigation: HP Raid Config utility shows the Raid array as functioning properly (RAID5 btw). Event log shows a bunch of DoS attacks from the test machines, saying it has disconnected the connection a. AFAIK (not part of my job) the test machines haven't changed the way they log information to this server or the amount of them hasn't increased. b. Nothing is infected, this server was scanned fully, and the test machines are re-imaged almost daily. Nothing in performance monitor shows as anything being pegged at maximum (CPU/HD/Network/RAM) I installed MS Network Monitor and it is showing a lot of traffic The server was using one gigabit Ethernet connection, I connected the second one as well with the same results. Forgot to add - one of the commonly written to dirs on the share has over 16k subdirs in it, with a crapton of small files within those dirs. Some of the OS instability was slow access to the drive which has this directory - perfmon doesn't show much activity on the HD though so I'm not sure if this crowded dir is the cause. Here is one important fact: I ran into this issue 2-3 months ago, couldn't figure it out, but I had a spare identical machine so I swapped them out (thought it was related to the machine), and now I have the same issue. Also, the computer will be stable if I turn off file sharing. So is the server just getting DoS'd by the test machines? I've never dealt with such an issue. Is instability in the server's OS common when getting DoS'd? Is there anything I can do to confirm this before telling the owners of the test machines to optimize their traffic? (I'm not sure what they'll be able to do). Is there something within Win2k8R2 that can balance the traffic across the two NICs? Any help would be appreciated. Update: Another thought - the drive with the share is RAID5 across 6 SCSI320 300GB HDs. They are near full capacity about 100GB from 1TB left. Could the amount of tiny files could be causing some weirdness with the parity in this array? I think I've read something about this in the past but I'm no expert on RAID.

  I am on Windows 7 and using Firefox browser. I am using WiFi, but since the morning I cannot access the Internet via the browsers (Firefox, Chrome, or IE). The laptop shows there is Internet connection, Skype is online, but I can't reach the Internet. Then I launched Tor application which creates secure channel and provides its Firefox browser. Well, I can now access the Internet over that browser. So, what might be the problem causing this malfunction? The error: The connection has timed out The server at mail.google.com is taking too long to respond. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. I have a few hints to think that it is not: The "Desktop Effects" will not load Apps such as stardock, when attempting to use OpenGL rendering, will display black boxes instead of transparency In the games Pioneers, the number-tile icons are suspiciously just black circles Windows games running with Wine will only support software rendering, not hardware rendering When I boot into a Knoppix LiveCD, the desktop effects do work, splendidly, meaning compiz detects my computer as capable. My problem with troubleshooting is that Canonical has basically eliminated the conf-file-based mechanism of X11 as far as I can tell, thus making it even harder to ensure graphics modules are loading properly. How do I debug and test OpenGL on m Ubuntu 10.04 installation?

• loading splash screen takes priority over terminal or windows manager while running elsa

  I recently installed e17 and was trying to set up defaults to use elsa and ecomorph over the standard compiz as it constantly crashes since updating to 12.04. If elsa is installed the loading screen hangs and never loads to login, however i can get to a terminal or the e17 login instead of the standard gdm that usually shows up, within a second the screen goes back to the loading screen. I can still type and login as well as run commands in the terminal, but all I see is the loading screen. Switching between terminals i can confirm my commands before it switches back to the loading screen. If i remove elsa the loading screen hangs, but I can get to a terminal login and run lightdm to start my session with no problems. I have multiple DE installed and am unsure which loading screen is coming up. i think it's the KDE screen, grub comes up with a debian background if that helps. I'm not sure if i can switch the loading screen and resolve this issue or if i'm just going to have to scrap using elsa and get lightdm to load on boot again. Elsa would be my preference. I don't have the space to backup my files for a complete reinstall. Please help!

• ASP.NET MVC hosting recommendations

  I'm looking for recommendations for hosting an asp.net MVC application. Obviously, we need to be able to have access to configure IIS directly - I'd prefer not to have to go thru a control panel. The web server needs to have a dedicated IP, since some clients will be accessing it via IP. We need at least a SQLServer 2005 database, ideally on the same box. Load and usage will be pretty low, so a virtual machine will probably be fine. Does any one have any recommendations that meet the above constraints?

• Unable to boot Ubuntu 64-bit in Virtualbox on Mac OS X

  I have latest generation Macbook Pro 7.1 (Intel Core 2 Duo) running Mac OS X 10.6.6. I installed Virtuabox 4.0.2 and tried to boot Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit iso. The boot options screen from the live CD came up: However when I continued to load the live session, or installer for that matter, I encountered the following error: This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU. I am not sure if VT-x is enabled or is supported in the Core 2 Duo of my Macbook Pro. But at least, I have both I/O APIC and VT-x enabled for hardware virtualization as told in the Virtualbox manual.

• Per-vertex animation with VBOs: Stream each frame or use index offset per frame?

  Scenario Meshes are animated using either skeletons (skinned animation) or some form of morph targets (i.e. per-vertex key frames). However, in either case, the animations are known in full at load-time, that is, there is no physics, IK solving, or any other form of in-game pose solving. The number of character actions (animations) will be limited but rich (hand-animated). There may be multiple characters using a each mesh and its animations simultaneously in-game (they will be at different poses/keyframes at the same time). Assume color and texture coordinate buffers are static. Goal To leverage the richness of well vetted animation tools such as Blender to do the heavy lifting for a small but rich set of animations. I am aware of additive pose blending like that from Naughty Dog and similar techniques but I would prefer to expend a little RAM/VRAM to avoid implementing a thesis-ready pose solver. I would also like to avoid implementing a key-frame + interpolation curve solver (reinventing Blender vertex groups and IPOs). Current Considerations Much like a non-shader-powered pose solver, create a VBO for each character and copy vertex and normal data to each VBO on each frame (VBO in STREAMING). Create one VBO for each animation where each frame (interleaved vertex and normal data) is concatenated onto the VBO. Then each character simply has a buffer pointer offset based on its current animation frame (e.g. pointer offset = (numVertices+numNormals)*frameNumber). (VBO in STATIC) Known Trade-Offs In 1 above: Each VBO would be small but there would be many VBOs and therefore lots of buffer binding and vertex copying each frame. Both client and pipeline intensive. In 2 above: There would be few VBOs therefore insignificant buffer binding and no vertex data getting jammed down the pipe each frame, but each VBO would be quite large. Are there any pitfalls to number 2 (aside from finite memory)? Are there other methods that I am missing?

What would be the best MO for doing speed tests from different locations around the world? I would like to test the page load speed and not just the server response time. • Why does gvim open session with extra/duplicate tabs?

  I'm running gvim, have 2 files open in 2 tabs. I save the current session via the sessionman plugin by Yuri Klubakov. I close gvim (or keep gvim open but close the session, doesn't matter). When I reopen gvim and load the session, I have 3 tabs opened - two of the tabs have the same file! This is not just limited to this single session. When I open some of my other sessions, gvim opens about twice the number of tabs that I expect it to. I disabled this plugin and tried another (session by Peter Odding), but I still get the same problem. Any idea what might be going on behind the scenes?
