• "Search Friendly" domain names

  We bought a few search friendly domain names for the CPA site that I manage. Each of the domains we bought has the name of a nearby city and the word cpa in front of, or behind the city name. The plan is to create a landing page for each of these domains with useful information about business filings, ect. specific to that city, as well as directions to our office from that city. The question is how to best utilize these new domains: Should each domain be set to a 301 redirect to mainsite.com/city ? Should each domain be it's own single page mini-site that links to mainsite.com ? What other options are there and what are the pros/cons? Remember the goal is to be more relevant in searches that use a nearby city name in their search for CPA/accounting services.

• Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 Beta Released!

  Just thought I’d pass on the word that the Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 Beta is now available to download. VS2010 SP1 Beta ships with a go live license which means you can start using it for production work though I’m not sure I’m going to be that brave until I check it out a bit first. Jason Zanders has a blog post outlining the new features/fixes included in the beta. Here are a couple BREAKING news items you’ll want to TakeNote of… VS2010 SP1 Beta BREAKS ASP.NET MVC 3 RC Razor IntelliSense.   By default, windows search only search by File name. To configure windows search to search by contents you need configure the following: You need to make sure Windows Search Services feature is activated.(Check this article for details) Then, configure Windows Search by Open file explorer: Press Alt button –> go to tools –> Folder options –> search tab –> Here select, “Always search file names and content(this might take several minutes)” Press okay. Now your searches will work for file content like the good old days of XP. Another way to search the contents in file without Search configuration is to Type “contents:” in the Windows Explorer search box followed by the word, searches text files. • Using Windows Previous Versions to access ZFS Snapshots (July 14, 2009)

  The Previous Versions tab on the Windows desktop provides a straightforward, intuitive way for users to view or recover files from ZFS snapshots.  ZFS snapshots are read-only, point-in-time instances of a ZFS dataset, based on the same copy-on-write transactional model used throughout ZFS.  ZFS snapshots can be used to recover deleted files or previous versions of files and they are space efficient because unchanged data is shared between the file system and its snapshots.  Snapshots are available locally via the .zfs/snapshot directory and remotely via Previous Versions on the Windows desktop. Shadow Copies for Shared Folders was introduced with Windows Server 2003 but subsequently renamed to Previous Versions with the release of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.  Windows shadow copies, or snapshots, are based on the Volume Snapshot Service (VSS) and, as the [Shared Folders part of the] name implies, are accessible to clients via SMB shares, which is good news when using the Solaris CIFS Service.  And the nice thing is that no additional configuration is required - it "just works". On Windows clients, snapshots are accessible via the Previous Versions tab in Windows Explorer using the Shadow Copy client, which is available by default on Windows XP SP2 and later.  For Windows 2000 and pre-SP2 Windows XP, the client software is available for download from Microsoft: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders Client. Assuming that we already have a shared ZFS dataset, we can create ZFS snapshots and view them from a Windows client. zfs snapshot tank/home/administrator@snap101zfs snapshot tank/home/administrator@snap102 To view the snapshots on Windows, map the dataset on the client then right click on a folder or file and select Previous Versions.  Note that Windows will only display previous versions of objects that differ from the originals.  So you may have to modify files after creating a snapshot in order to see previous versions of those files. The screenshot above shows various snapshots in the Previous Versions window, created at different times.  On the left panel, the .zfs folder is visible, illustrating that this is a ZFS share.  The .zfs setting can be toggled as desired, it makes no difference when using previous versions.  To make the .zfs folder visible: zfs set snapdir=visible tank/home/administrator To hide the .zfs folder: zfs set snapdir=hidden tank/home/administrator The following screenshot shows the Previous Versions panel when a file has been selected.  In this case the user is prompted to view, copy or restore the file from one of the available snapshots. As can be seen from the screenshots above, the Previous Versions window doesn't display snapshot names: snapshots are listed by snapshot creation time, sorted in time order from most recent to oldest.  There's nothing we can do about this, it's the way that the interface works.  Perhaps one point of note, to avoid confusion, is that the ZFS snapshot creation time isnot the same as the root directory creation timestamp. In conclusion, Shadow Copies for Shared Folders provides a straightforward way for users to view or recover files from ZFS snapshots.  The Windows desktop provides an easy to use, intuitive GUI and no configuration is required to use or access previous versions of files or folders. • Best wiki engine to use?

  Hi, I'm looking to set up a wiki as a simple CMS for a resource page. Mostly just pdfs and word documents will be hosted, but the two main features I'm looking for is the ability to restrict pages based upon user privileges and for blog-style comments between the users. From what I've researched, mediawiki can easily do the first part with restricting users, but I haven't had much luck finding any plugins for comments. I'm trying to avoid the discussion style pages from wikipedia, and have more of a comments just under the article. So far I'm leaning towards trying Tiki out, any other recommendations?

• using egrep to find missing @ in log

  I am using the following command to find log entries that are the result of a log in to the email server: egrep '_login[^ ]' /var/log/exim_mainlog That works fine to find entries that contain content like this: P=esmtpa A=courier_login:[email protected] S=1573 id=f1cd08396,... But what I need to do is to change my grep statement, so that it finds single word logins that do not use the @ sign, like so: P=esmtpa A=courier_login:name S=1573 id=f1cd08396,... Where the log in before was "[email protected]", but in the second log entry, the log in used was only "name". Is this possible using grep or egrep, perhaps in some kind of a compound statement? • Is there any text editor for windows which can save files with code highlight for viewing

  I want some software for Windows where I can save code snippets and other daily usable commands in one file. Everyday I find some small code snippets which I want to save in a single file. Just like we have code snippet savers online, I want something offline on Windows, basically with all the features Microsoft Word has, but with code highlight. It should be lightweight like Notepad++. I mean if I select the code and then press some button, it should change the color according to the language. Currently I use Notepad++, but in it, I can't select small code snippets on one page. It either highlights the entire file or nothing.

• Is there a global "low resolution" filter for OpenGL?

  I'm trying to learn a little about OpenGL, so I'm making a simple 2D game (with OpenTK), and so far it's coming along well. I thought it would be fun to give it that, for lack of a better word, retropixelated look of games from the early nineties. I figured it would be an easy thing to do -- simply draw everything at half its normal size and scale up with no anti-aliasing. But I can't find any resources on how to do this. I can set the min/mag filters of my textures to nearest and that works fine for my sprites, but I'm using lots of primitives and I'd like the effect to apply to them as well. The one idea I had was to draw everything at half size, then somehow copy the render buffer to a texture, then render that texture full-size, but I don't know how to do that, and it seems like there must be a better way. Can anyone help me out?

  Glossary A job reference (see also the german version) is a letter from the (former) employer that states what the employee did, and how well he did it. There are oh so weird rules here on how to phrase stuff therein, but this is not what this question is about. Question I hope this can even be generally answered, but even if country/region specific, I think there is enough international know-how on this site to get useful answers for different regions. I was wondering how detailed the tasks a programmer / developer did should be spelled out in a job reference. (After all, they can be spelled out in all detail in a CV when applying for a new job.) So how much detail is usual for a job reference? Example Developed Windows applications in C++ or Developed Windows Desktop Applications using C++ with MS Visual Studio 2005 and MFC, utilising Boost 1.47 and specif library xyz, focusing on subsystem abc for numerical calculations of ... etc. What makes more sense?

  Have you noticed that a disproportionate amount of popular software products comes from the USA ? Examples: iOS, OS X, Phosothop, Oracle, Windows, Final Cut Pro, MS Office, iTunes, iWorks Suite, iLife Suite, AutoCad, Aperture, Google search engine, Twitter and endless stream of software that are the best in their fields and that are the models the rest of the industry want to emulate. Few people would deny that the most popular software comes from American companies. Obviously there's plenty of good software coming from outside the US, like Linux or SAP but most great looking, killer software comes from USA. Maybe these companies outsource the code elsewhere but the inception and design is mostly done in the USA. Why is that? and, can it be replicated elsewhere given the correct "ingredients" ?

• Adjusting the Score on Oracle Text search results

  When you sort the results of a search by Score using OracleTextSearch as the search engine in WebCenter Content, the results coming back are based on the relevancy on the document.  In theory, the more relevant the search term is to the document, the higher ranked Score it should receive.  But in practice, the relevancy score can seem somewhat of a mystery.  It's not entirely clear how it ranks the importance of some documents over others based on the search term.  And often times, once a word appears a certain number of times within a document, the Score simply maxes out at 100 and the top results can be difficult to discern from one another.  Take for example the search for 'vacation' on this set of documents:  [Read More]

• Are there any formalized/mathematical theories of software testing?

  Googling "software testing theory" only seems to give theories in the soft sense of the word; I have not been able to find anything that would classify as a theory in the mathematical, information theoretical or some other scientific field's sense. What I'm looking for is something that formalizes what testing is, the notions used, what a test case is, the feasibility of testing something, the practicality of testing something, the extent to which something should be tested, formal definition/explanation of code coverage, etc. UPDATE: Also, I'm not sure, intuitively, about the connection between formal verification and what I asked, but there's clearly some sort of connection.

• LibreOffice Writer Error due to a lock file

  Every time I try to open a word document I get this error. LibreOffice 3.5 Either another instance of LibreOffice is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings. Before continuing, you should make sure user "closes LibreOffice on host". Do you want to continue? I've been onto different forums to find out a remedy but nothing yet. I've recently done a fresh install of 12.04 (64bit) and have been having some issues with different programs and have been able to work through most of them but this one, I'm lost.

  I´m starting up a new project. It´s going to be a web browser game, developed using HTML5, JavaScript and CSS3. I have some general questions regarding the process of game developing. Should you know everything about your game by the time you start writing the first lines of code? I mean should you know all the details, all the things the player can and can not do? Basically: should you be done writing down new ideas before you begin coding? I understand the pre-production process is about documenting, doing research etc. What does that mean?   I recently graduated from college with a B.S. in Computer Science, and am now currently attending the same college to get an M.S. in Computer Science. I know lots of things about Computer Science and programming but throughout all of my coursework I have never had to develop a single complete application, the projects were always relatively small (~300-500 lines of code). Basically, my overall I am about to have these two degrees and I feel like I don't know anything about software development or design; which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I am looking for ways to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, I would love people's advice on these questions: 1) How do you design good software? • Best Way To Develop Robust Cross-Platform Application?

  Windows C programmer here (going back to 1992 and Windows95 back when it was called Windows93). Can function in C++, but mostly still a C programmer. Looking to build a cross-platform casual game. Very numbers heavy with only a few artistic embellishments and animations, so perhaps a development environment for business apps might be the best option. Or an easy-to-use 2D game dev platform. Target platforms: Windows, Mac, MS Tablet, iPhone, iPad, Android. I currently develop on Windows with Visual Studio 2012, but we could spend up to $50K on hardware/software/middleware if necessary. Not very competent getting open-source software working. Would rather pay the money and jump right into app development. Recommendations?

• Maximized Office 2007 gets cut off on multi-monitor setup with different resolutions

  I've got an external monitor plugged into my laptop that I like to use for typing up documents, but I've noticed that when Word is maximized it gets cut off at where the primary monitor's bounds are. Is this a bug in Wine (i'm using version 1.3.32), or with my Window Manager (metacity with compositing enabled, version 2.34.1), with my graphics drivers (nouveau) or something else? I know that I can fix it by unmaximizing (it doesn't get cut off and I can resize to the entirety of the second monitor), but it keeps on maximizing itself as it (rightly so) knows that it should be taking up the entire screen. I don't really want to use the "Emulate a virtual desktop feature", I would prefer to find the source of this issue.

On this panel this year we had Michael Wells from Raymond James, Joy Mathew and Venki Govindarajan from Comcast, and Serkan Karatas from Turk Telekom. Our panelists have a great mix of experiences and all are passionate about using Oracle Data Integration products to solve very complex use cases. Each panelist was given a ten minute to overview their use of our product, followed by a barrage of questions from the audience. Michael Wells spoke about using Oracle GoldenGate for heterogeneous real time replication from HP (Tandem) NonStop to SQL Server and emphasized the need for using standard naming conventions for when customers configure GoldenGate, as the practices is immensely helpful when debugging a problem. Joy Mathew and Venkat Govindarajan from Comcast described how they have used GoldenGate for over a decade and their experiences of using the product for replicating data from HP nonstop to Terdata. Serkan Karatas from Turk Telekom dove into using Oracle GoldenGate and the value of archiving data in extremely large databases, which in Turk Telekoms case resulted in a 1 month ROI for the entire project.
