• Using TortoiseHg's Repository explorer

  Hi, I'm coming from a TortoiseSVN background and decided to give TortoiseHg a try.. One thing I got really used to with TortoiseSVN was the SVN Repo-Explorer, which worked quite similarly to Windows Explorer.. However, when I tried to use TortoiseHg's Repository Explorer, what I got was something else, it was more like TortoiseSVN's Show Log. It showed me what the recent commits were and what files were changed and even had nifty graphs.. However, I'm still left wanting for TortoiseSVN's Repo-Explorer.. Does TortoiseHg have anything like this? How am I supposed to poke around the Repository if I can only view changed stuff? Thanks, kreb

• Corrupt file indicative of corrupt hard drive?

  I have noticed that two files on my (almost full) 2 TB hard drive have been corrupted. One file has 20 kB (!) corrupted, i.e. consecutive 20 kB have changed, even though the modification date of the file hasn't changed and I haven't worked with this file for over a year. This tells me that something "below" the file system level has messed with the data and the only thing I can think of is hardware failure, most likely hard disk failure. I've tested my RAM already and it works flawlessly. I'm using ext4 on Linux, if that is of any help. Is this normal? Is it time to change my hard drive disk before something worse happens? What can I do to prevent that from happening in the future? Is there some built-in feature of, or extension to ext4 that includes additional error correcting code and/or watches files for changes that haven't been caused by the OS?

  Is it possible to configure Bind9 or other DNS to resolve the domain name of a machine into different IPs based on the subnet of the requesting client? e.g. Say the same service is running on 2 different application servers at different geographical points and based on the incoming request to resolve the domain name, the name server provides the IP of the application server based on the requesting client's IP, so the service could be offered by servers that are geographically closer to the client. In short, something like a CDN but just the IP resolution part based on the client's subnet. Is this configurable in any DNS?

• Overriding Debian default groups from LDAP

  This is a thing that has always bothered me: how am I best to handle Debian standard groups for LDAP users? Debian has a number of groups defined by default, e.g. plugdev, audio, cdrom and so on. These control access in standard Debian installs. When I want a user from LDAP to be a member of the `audio' group on all machines they log in to, I've tried a few different things: Adding them to the local group on the machine (this works but is hard to maintain) Creating a group in LDAP with the same name and a different GID then adding the user to that group (breaks reverse / forward GID mapping, doesn't seem to work) Creating a group in LDAP with the same name and same GID and adding the user to that group (doesn't seem to work at all, things don't see the LDAP group members) Creating a group in LDAP with the same name and same GID then removing the local group (this works but upsets Debian's maintenance scripts during upgrades that check for local system sanity) What's the best practice for this scenario?

• Windows Server 2008, IIS7 and Windows Authentication

  We currently have a development server set up which we are trying to test some Windows authentication ASP.NET code on. We have turned on Windows Authentication in IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 fine, and it asks the user for a username and password as excepted, but the problem is it doesn't appear to accept any credentials. This code for example... Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load Page.Title = "Home page for " + User.Identity.Name End Sub ...always returns an empty string. One theory we have is that we dont have Active Directory installed as of yet, we are just testing this by logging on via the machine name not a domain. Is this type of authentication only applicatable to domains (if so we can probably install Active Directory and some test accounts) - or is it possible to get the user identity when logging in using the machine name? Ideally we would like to be able to test this on our local machines (Windows 7 Pro) using our own accounts (again these aren't on a domain) and IIS but this has the same issue as our dev server.   If I do an nslookup on youtube.com, no problem, if I do one with www.youtube.com, failure. See details below. If I do the same from a Windows machine its fine, its when I do it from a Mac workstation that I get the issue. I have rebooted, both server and workstation, I did a changeip, but nothing is working. Any recommendations?

The exceptions are being thrown when trying to access directories that are virtual dirs in IIS, and plain old UNC network shares What the implications for enabling the WebDAV extensions on our live web server? And will this solve our problems with the exceptions in our event log?

Most linux distro use rsyslog nowadays, which can provide reliable log transport. But some older unices, network devices and maybe windows box still use old udp rfc-style transport. How did you manage to get reliable transport? Storing logs for a few months can represent a huge amount of disk space. How do you store them? rdbms? Compressed and encrypted text files?

• How to boot windows 8 in a dual boot along with windows 7?

  I have installed a WIndows 8 evaluation about a week ago. Usually, it asks me every time I turn on my computer whether to boot into windows 8 or windows 7. The default was windows 8 after 30 seconds. I changed that just yesterday to be default windows 7 after 5 seconds. And after I changed the setting, I went ahead and went into windows 8 and did my work. Today, when I turned on my computer, it is failing to ask me which one to boot it in. It simply boots directly into Windows 7. Is there any reason for this? Can I no longer boot into Windows 8?

• Can connect to DNS addresses typed in the URL but not by IP addresses

  I just changed over my modem to bridged mode, and changed my wireless router to PPPoE. My PC IP address is reserved and forwards port 80 to my computer's IP address based on my MAC address. I have a problem, however. I cannot access my local webserver by public IP address or my router 192.168.0.1 wirelessly from any other computer or iPad. I can, however, connect by this PC which is connected to the wireless router via ethernet. Via wireless, it says it cannot connect, however DNS addresses work (e.g. google.com, etc.) Any ideas?

• Unknown Host Error, is this a registrar problem or a host problem?

  Hi guys, I am dealing with a barrel of weasels on this one. Ad agency registered the domain in mid-August with Network Solutions. 72 hours ago I updated the DNS to point to a host provided by an associate of the client whose credentials are dubious. The DNS servers are at NETSONIC.NET (NS1 and NS2) and respond to ping no problem. I can FTP to the server using its IP but the name is no go. The name is also no go for tracert and ping: tracert voodoobbqfranchise.com Unable to resolve target system name voodoobbqfranchise.com. ping voodoobbqfranchise.com ping: unknown host voodoobbqfranchise.com I called NetSol and of course their tier one guy swears it must be the host but I insist that an unknown host must be a NetSol issue. Otherwise we'd get somethng like an httpd_conf error after being routed to the Netsonic server. Am I right? Is this an issue at the registrar? TIA JG

  I am using Samba 3, and want to join my Windows 8 PC to the Samba domain. Windows 8 cannot join out of the box, so I added the following registry entries: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters DWORD DomainCompatibilityMode 1 DWORD DNSNameResolutionRequired 0 And now it talks to the Samba server ok, however I get the following error: And I notice that the machine name created on the samba server does not match its name: win-8jq3fg1n74e$:x:30003:30003:Machine:/var/lib/nobody:/bin/false It is like it is using an internal name. The following is the error in the smb.log [2012/10/21 14:26:16.099520, 0] passdb/pdb_interface.c:348(pdb_default_create_user) _samr_create_user: Running the command `/usr/sbin/useradd -c Machine -d /var/lib/nobody -s /bin/false win-8jq3fg1n74e$' gave 9 [2012/10/21 14:26:28.143224, 0] lib/util_sock.c:474(read_fd_with_timeout) [2012/10/21 14:26:28.143420, 0] lib/util_sock.c:1441(get_peer_addr_internal) getpeername failed. • tar incremental backup is backing everything up, every time when used on the Dropbox directory

  I made an incremental backup about 10 months ago (on Jan 27, 2013), creating a .snar metadata file. Now, when I try to make an incremental backup using tar --create --file=dropbox_incremental_1.tar --listed-incremental=dropbox_0.snar Dropbox the command just re-backs up everything. I'm not an expert at Unix timestamps, but I noticed that virtually all of my directory timestamps are way more recent than the last time they changed. For my actual files, they look like this: Access: 2013-03-12 19:04:51.000000000 -0500 Modify: 2012-09-30 15:10:47.000000000 -0500 Change: 2013-03-12 19:04:51.306209672 -0500 The 'Modify' timestamp seems correct, but the files were definitely not changed (at least not doing anything that I know of) at the time they say they were. These files still seem to go into the incremental archive. What's happening here? Is there a way to tell tar to look at the 'modify' timestamp? Isn't this what it's supposed to be doing?

• Unable to modify variables phpmyadmin via variables tab (Xampp)

  I am quite new to phpmyadmin configuration. I had project where utf8 encoding is needed. What i'm trying to do is to change the variables text/char all into utf8. I changed, yes at that moment the values changed into values I wanted. But then when I terminate Xampp and reenters phpmyadmin page or even refreshing the page, all the values restored to default (original values). My phpmyadmin had default user as root and hadn't been set a password yet. There is also no logout button in phpmyadmin landing page. I had difficult time even to set the server connection collation (hangs indefinitely and never seems can be updated). phpmyadmin version:4.1.6 mysql:5.5.36 (latest version) I doubt this could be due to malformed installation, because same things happened in my other computer too (exactly the same versions). what could be wrong? thanks.

• Windows 7 Group Policy blocking Adobe Reader

  A few weeks ago, my company blocked Adobe Reader due to an unpatched security issue. However, we recently moved one of our computers to a project that didn't require access to the corporate network, and IT gave us the green light to override Group Policy and re-enable Adobe Reader. However, this is something we've been unable to achieve. We've tried the following (in no particular order), all to no avail: Ran the program as administrator Renamed the program (the blocking is likely signature-based) Deleted registry.pol Changed the value of "Start" in \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\services\gpsvc to "4" (to prevent group policy from applying, even though it's no longer on the corporate domain) Checked SRP settings under Local Security Policy - nothing was there Checked AppLocker settings under Local Security Policy - nothing there either Incidentally, I found a few registry keys with descriptions referring to Adobe Reader being blocked. I deleted all of them, but it didn't help. Changed the permission settings of the program Re-installed Adobe Reader Is there anything I missed, short of doing a clean install?

• Varnish + Plesk : vhost broken

  I have an e-commerce site with 300,000 products and 20,000 categories. It is slow and currently in production. I decided to install Varnish to speed up. The trouble is that during installation, I got a Guru Meditation. Since the site is in production, I am not allowed to leave this error more than a second, thinking to have made an enormous stupidity. I say that there may be a specific configuration with plesk. Has anyone already installed Varnish on a ubuntu 11.04 server with plesk 10? Does anyone have a better resource? I know it is "very vague" as an error, but maybe some of you have had this problem. edit 24/11/2011 I continued to work on Varnish + Plesk ... but it still does not work. 1) I changed the port for apache in plesk General # mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` -D psa -e'replace into misc (param, val) values ("http_port", 8008)' 1.1) I rebuild the server conf # /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all 2) I changed the apache conf files (if those were not taking full plesk top) vim /etc/apache2/ports.conf NameVirtualHost *:8008 Listen 8008 2.1) I do the same with /etc/apache2/sites-enables/000-default 3) I changed the port of my vhost (a single server) vim /var/www/vhosts/MYDOMAIN.COM/conf/XXXXXXXXX.http.include Replace the port 80 by this I want.   I have a Ubuntu 10.04 machine that has tomcat6 on it. When I start tomcat6 with /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start I get * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 /bin/bash already running. and the server fails to start. Unfortunately, there is nothing in /var/log/tomcat/catalina.out to help debug the issue. With some cleverly placed echo statements it seems to be the line from /etc/init.d/tomcat6: start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \ -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \ -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH" The only thing I've changed in this script is TOMCAT6_USER=root. In servers.xml, the only thing I've changed is <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1" from port 8080. I have tried reinstalling the package by first removing everything sudo apt-get --purge remove tomacat6 and then sudo apt-get install tomcat6 but this has not solved the issue. I have also restarted the server multiple times in hopes of some magic. Everything was working until I restarted my server. Any ideas?

• When DNS doesn't cache

  We've had some odd DNS problems over the past couple of days that I don't fully understand. Some of our DNS names stopped resolving for some of our customers due to some 'unknown' server reconfiguration at our DNS provider. The problem seemed to be intermittent i.e. stopped working and started working within a few minutes over a couple of days. I'm no expert on DNS, but I'd have expected DNS caches to prevent this sort of thing from happening - when we need to change an IP address for a DNS record, it can take 24 hours to propogate, so how can our DNS provider be breaking name resolution intermittently for our customers so easily? Shouldn't the DNS caches kick in here? We had a similar problem about a month ago when one of their nameservers 'decided to reload the DNS database from scratch' - this broke our name resolution too. Again, why didn't the caches satisfy the name resolution requests. Any guesses would be appreciated. John

• Unable to restore from Shadow Copy due to long filename

  We have shadow copy enabled on our Windows SBS 2008 server. Attempting to restore a file from shadow copy gave the following error- The source file name(s) are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter name(s) before attempting this operation. The filename has 67 characters, and it's shadow copy path is 170 characters. These seem to be under the NTFS limits (260?). We tried- Copying to the shortest path possible (C:) Copying to the shortest path possible on both a client computer and the server itself Is it possible to rename files in a shadow copy, before doing the copy? Any idea why the error is appearing despite the filename size appearing to be within limits?

  I've installed git via the instaler and not with terminal with commands, and my $PATH changed, the path to the 'local' git was added the the end of the variable, and my $PATH changed to this: /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin However, that doesnt help me, because i the path to Xcode's git comes first. so what I've done is the next, I added this lines to my '.bash_profile': export PATH="/usr/local/git/bin:$PATH" and now my path is the next: /usr/local/git/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin And I wanted to know how to remove the duplication from the end of the Path so I end up with: /usr/local/git/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin Thanks Ahead!   I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks. • Look strange on gvim after applying Source Sans Pro font

  I downloaded the Source Sans Pro font and install on my Fedora17(Xfce). I did mkfontscale, mkfontdir, fc-cache -fv, and after fc-list, could see it on the list. Then I changed guifont in gvim to Source\ Sans\ Pro\ 10, but it looks quite strange. And then I changed it to DejaVu\ Sans\ Mono\ 10, it looks nothing strange. So, why would this happend?
