• What's the proper way to prepare chroot to recover a broken Linux installation?

  This question relates to questions that are asked often. The procedure is frequently mentioned or linked to offsite, but is not often clearly and correctly stated. In an objective to concentrate useful information in one place, this question seeks to provide a clear, correct reference for this procedure. What are the proper steps to prepare a chroot environment for a recovery procedure? In many situations, repairing a broken Linux installation is best done from within the installation. But if the system won't boot, how do you fix it from within? Let's assume you manage to boot into an alternate system. Once there, you need to access your broken installation in order to fix it. Many recovery How-Tos recommend using chroot in order to run programs as if you are actually booted into the broken installation. What is the basic procedure? Are there accepted best-practices to follow? What variables need to be considered in order to adapt the basic preparation steps to a particular recovery task? • VMware ESX Linux Guest Customization

  Hello, I am interested in deploying several RHEL 4 Update 8 virtual machines for creation of a test environment. Here are the steps I am taking: In off hours, P2V/V2V the production machines and convert them to templates Deploy the virtual machines with a customization specification that changes hostname, IP address I am interested in how these processes are done and if there are any options for further customization. Are the machines brought on the network when they are powered on, before they are reconfigured? Is there a potential IP address conflict? Is there an option to run additional scripts which reside on the guest as a part of the reconfiguration? For example, restoring an Oracle Database. This is an option with Windows guests and sysprep, but I have been unable to locate anything showing a RHEL equivalent. I am dealing with a multi tier application. The main issue I am attempting to mitigate is that the application servers reference database servers by hostname and in tnsnames files. I am interested in scripting the reconfiguration of the application in the deployment so that the app/db servers are pointing to the test environment. I am OK with placing the 'cleanup' script on the source and executing it after the machine has been brought up. I am interested in the automation of the script's execution post clone/boot, as well as if there could be an IP address conflict. (cross posted to VMTN's ESX 4 community)

• Role of MBR in the booting process

  I am new to stack overflow. So please correct me if my question seems irrelevant or stupid. I read here in Booting Process : The job of the primary boot loader is to find and load the secondary boot loader (stage 2). It does this by looking through the partition table for an active partition. When it finds an active partition, it scans the remaining partitions in the table to ensure that they're all inactive. When this is verified, the active partition's boot record is read from the device into RAM and executed. The question is that I am having a Hard disk which has two Operating System images windows and ubuntu and hence both partitions in which they reside are active. Then why do we have only one active partition always? (I know that active partition is one of the primary partition but then why we are giving special reference to one primary partition? ) I am confused a bit. Please solve my query. Thank you so much.

• Where can I legally obtain the 64bit version of Windows 8?

  No, I am not looking to pirate. I bought a key through the Upgrade assistant (for just $15 due to the upgrade offer), but it downloaded an iso file that was between 2.3 and 2.5 GB. Which doesn't make sense to me, because the Evaluation version of Windows 8 x64 is closer to 3.4 GB in size. I assumed the Upgrade Assistant would be intelligent enough to realize that it is being run on a Windows 7 x64 machine and by extension, download the x64 code. Previously, I was able to legally download the ISOs (sans the keys, of course) from the Digital River host. I do not see an option to do that. I'm not interested in risking downloading a tampered ISO. I want to do it through Microsoft channels, but I just don't see how. As you may imagine, search terms such as "Windows 8 official download link" result in a plethora of obviously spyware infested piracy sites. If there's any non-exposing way for me to prove that I have legally purchased Windows and I'm genuinely looking for this answer, please let me know. • Wildcards in jnlp template file

  Since the last security changes in Java 7u40, it is required to sign a JNLP file. This can either be done by adding the final JNLP in JNLP-INF/APPLICATION.JNLP, or by providing a template JNLP in JNLP-INF/APPLICATION_TEMPLATE.JNLP in the signed main jar. The first way works well, but we would like to allow to pass a previously unknown number of runtime arguments to our application. • Combining MVVM Light Toolkit and Unity 2.0

  This is more of a commentary than a question, though feedback would be nice. I have been tasked to create the user interface for a new project we are doing. We want to use WPF and I wanted to learn all of the modern UI design techniques available. Since I am fairly new to WPF I have been researching what is available. I think I have pretty much settled on using MVVM Light Toolkit (mainly because of its "Blendability" and the EventToCommand behavior!), but I wanted to incorporate IoC also. So, here is what I have come up with. I have modified the default ViewModelLocator class in a MVVM Light project to use a UnityContainer to handle dependency injections. • jQuery load Google Visualization API with AJAX

  Hello. There is an issue that I cannot solve, I've been looking a lot in the internet but found nothing. I have this JavaScript that is used to do an Ajax request by PHP. When the request is done, it calls a function that uses the Google Visualization API to draw an annotatedtimeline to present the data. The script works great without AJAX, if I do everything inline it works great, but when I try to do it with AJAX it doesn't work!!! The error that I get is in the declaration of the "data" DataTable, in the Google Chrome Developer Tools I get a Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'DataTable' of undefined. When the script gets to the error, everything on the page is cleared, it just shows a blank page. So I don't know how to make it work.   Hi, I'm using a class which applies a visual reflection-effect to defined movieclips. I use a reflection-class from here: link to source. It works like a charm except when I apply a rotation to the movieclip. In my case the reflection is still visible but only a part of it. What am I doing wrong? How could I pass/include the rotation to the Reflection-Class ? Thanks in advance! • xVal 1.0 not generating the correct xVal.AttachValidator script in view

  I'm currently implementing xVal client-side validation. The server-side validation is working correctly at the moment. I have referenced xVall.dll (from xVal1.0.zip) in my project as well as the System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations and System.web.mvc.DataAnnotations from the Data Annotations Model Binder Sample found at http://aspnet.codeplex.com/releases/view/24471. I have modified the method BindProperty in the DataAnnotationsModelBinder class since it returned a nullpointer exception telling me the modelState object was null. Some blogposts described to modify the method and I did according to this SO post. In combination with the edited data annotation dlls this gives me server-side validation working (although i have to manually exclude the "id" property as done in the TryUpdateModel). The strange thing is that it still generates the following script in my View: xVal.AttachValidator(null, {"Fields":[{"FieldName":"ID","FieldRules": [{"RuleName":"DataType","RuleParameters":{"Type":"Integer"}}]}]}, {}) While all the found blogposts on this ( 1, 2 ) but all of those are old posts and all say it should be fixed from xVal 0.8 and up. The last thing I found was this post but I did not really understand. I referenced using Visual Studio - add reference -- browse - selected from my bin dir where I stored the external compiled dlls (copied to the bin dir of my project). Can anyone tell me where the problem originates from? EDIT Adding the reference from the .NET tab fixed the problem somehow. While earlier adding from this tab resulted in a nullpointer error since it used the standard DataAnnotations delivered with the MVC1 framework instead of the freshly build one. Is it because I dropped the .dll in my bin dir that it now picks the correct one? Or why?

• Autoconf (newbie) -- building with static library

  I am trying to migrate from manual build to autoconf, which is working very nicely so far. But I have one static library that I can't figure out how to integrate. That library will NOT be located in the usual library locations - the location of the binary (.a file) and header (.h file) will be given as a configure argument. (Notably, even if I move the .a file to /usr/lib or anywhere else I can think of, it still won't work.) Manual compilation is working with these: gcc ... -I/path/to/header/file/directory /full/path/to/the/.a/file/itself (Uh, I actually don't understand why the .a file is referenced directly, not with -L or anything. Yes, I have a half-baked understanding of building C programs.) I can use the configure argument to successfully find the header (.h file) using AC_CHECK_HEADER. Inside the AC_CHECK_HEADER I then add the location to CPFLAGS and the #include of the header file in the actual C code picks it up nicely. Given a configure argument that has been put into $location and the name of the needed files are myprog.h and myprog.a (which are both in the same directory), here is what works so far: AC_CHECK_HEADER([$location/myprog.h], [AC_DEFINE([HAVE_MYPROG_H], [1], [found myprog.h]) CFLAGS="$CFLAGS -I$location"]) Where I run into difficulties is getting the binary (.a file) linked in. No matter what I try, I always get an error about undefined references to the function calls for that library. I'm pretty sure it's a linkage issue, because I can fuss with the C code and make an intentional error in the function calls to that library which produces earlier errors that indicate that the function prototypes have been loaded and used to compile. I tried adding the location that contains the .a file to LDFLAGS and then doing a AC_CHECK_LIB but it is not found. Maybe my syntax is wrong, or maybe I'm missing something more fundamental, which would not be surprising since I'm a newbie and don't really know what I'm doing. Here is what I have tried: AC_CHECK_HEADER([$location/myprog.h], [AC_DEFINE([HAVE_MYPROG_H], [1], [found myprog.h]) CFLAGS="$CFLAGS -I$location"; LDFLAGS="$LDFLAGS -L$location"; AC_CHECK_LIB(myprog)]) No dice. I am trying to set latitude & longitude to some JSON string but every time straight after it sets the variable it changes it back to "undefined" as soon as it passes the line after var latitude? (using firebug & firequery to debug)

I've gone from trying to include it in an existing site to stripping it right back to a very basic form and it's still not functioning. I think I've exhausted all the "Try this..." options I can find, everything from adding in [ScriptMethod] to changing things in Web.Config. Is there anything obviously wrong with this code? Only other thing that may be having an effect is in Global.asax I do a Context.RewritePath to rewrite URLs - does this have any effect on AJAX? Thanks for any help you can give.

Most things were going pretty smooth until I tried to start up my thin server.   Hi ! I'm currently doing a firewall management application for Django, here's the (simplified) model : class Port(models.Model): number = models.PositiveIntegerField(primary_key=True) application = models.CharField(max_length=16, blank=True) class Rule(models.Model): port = models.ForeignKey(Port) ip_source = models.IPAddressField() ip_mask = models.IntegerField(validators=[MaxValueValidator(32)]) machine = models.ForeignKey("vmm.machine") What I would like to do, however, is to display to the user a form for entering rules, but with a very different organization than the model : Port 80 O Not open O Everywhere O Specific addresses : --------- delete field --------- delete field + add address field Port 443 ... etc Where Not open means that there is no rule for the given port, Everywhere means that there is only ONE rule (0.0.0.0/0) for the given port, and with specific addresses, you can add as many addresses as you want (I did this with JQuery), which will make as many rules. Now I did a version completely "handmade", meaning that I create the forms entirely in my templates, set input names with a prefix, and parse all the POSTed stuff in my view (which is quite painful, and means that there's no point in using a web framework). I also have a class which aggregates the rules together to easily pre-fill the forms with the informations "not open, everywhere, ...".   Hi All I am having a problem in RSpec when my mock object is asked for a URL by the ActionController. The URL is a Mock one and not a correct resource URL. I am running RSpec 1.3.0 and Rails 2.3.5 Basically I have two models. Where a subject has many notes. class Subject < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :title has_many :notes end class Note < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :title belongs_to :subject end My routes.rb file nests these two resources as such: ActionController::Routing::Routes.draw do |map| map.resources :subjects, :has_many => :notes end The NotesController.rb file looks like this: class NotesController < ApplicationController # POST /notes # POST /notes.xml def create @subject = Subject.find(params[:subject_id]) @note = @subject.notes.create!(params[:note]) respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to(@subject) } end end end Finally this is my RSpec spec which should simply post my mocked objects to the NotesController and be executed... which it does: it "should create note and redirect to subject without javascript" do # usual rails controller test setup here subject = mock(Subject) Subject.stub(:find).and_return(subject) notes_proxy = mock('association proxy', { "create!" => Note.new }) subject.stub(:notes).and_return(notes_proxy) post :create, :subject_id => subject, :note => { :title => 'note title', :body => 'note body' } end The problem is that when the RSpec post method is called. The NotesController correctly handles the Mock Subject object, and create! the new Note object. However when the NoteController#Create method tries to redirect_to I get the following error: NoMethodError in 'NotesController should create note and redirect to subject without javascript' undefined method `spec_mocks_mock_url' for #<NotesController:0x1034495b8> Now this is caused by a bit of Rails trickery that passes an ActiveRecord object (@subject, in our case, which isn't ActiveRecord but a Mock object), eventually to url_for who passes all the options to the Rails' Routing, which then determines the URL. My question is how can I mock Subject so that the correct options are passed so that I my test passes. I've tried passing in :controller = 'subjects' options but no joy. Is there some other way of doing this? Thanks...
