  • Good Scoop: The PeopleSoft/IBM Backstory

    - by [email protected]
    By Brian Dayton on April 12, 2010 11:15 AM Sometimes you're searching for something online and you find an unrelated, bonus nugget. Last week I stumbled across an interesting blog post from Chris Heller of a PeopleSoft consulting shop in San Ramon, CA called Grey Sparling. I don't know these guys. But Chris, who apparently used to work on the PeopleTools team, wrote a great article on a pre-acquisition, would-be deal between IBM and PeopleSoft that would have standardized PeopleSoft on IBM technology. The behind-the-scenes perspective is interesting. His commentary on the challenges that the company and PeopleSoft customers would have encountered if the deal had gone through was also interesting: · "No common ownership. It's hard enough to get large groups of people to work together when they work for the same company, but with two separate companies it is much, much harder. Even within Oracle, progress on Fusion applications was slow until Thomas Kurian took over Fusion applications in addition to Fusion middleware." · "No customer buy-in. PeopleSoft customers weren't asking for a conversion to WebSphere, so the fact that doing that could have helped PeopleSoft stay independent wouldn't have meant much to them, especially since the cost of moving to whatever a "PeopleSoft built on WebSphere" would have been significant." · "No executive buy-in. This is related to the previous point, but it's worth calling out separately. If Oracle had walked away and the deal with IBM had gone through, and PeopleSoft customers got put through the wringer as part of WebSphere move, all of the PeopleSoft project teams would be put in the awkward position of explaining to their management why these additional costs and headaches were happening. Essentially they would need to "sell" the partnership internally to their own management team. That's not a fun conversation to have." I'm not surprised that something like this was in the works. But I did find the inside scoop and Heller's perspective on the challenges particularly interesting. Especially the advantages of aligning development of applications and infrastructure development under one roof. Here's a link to the whole blog entry.

  • System wide Proxy settings when on a windows network with a password

    - by sav
    I'm using Ubuntu on a windows network. I want to connect to the world wide web. I have followed the steps here which I have found very useful. However when I try to ping a website (eg: ping www.wikipedia.org) I get no reply. I can ping local computers on my network, but I need to go through our proxy to get to the world wide web. I can even browse wikipedia using firefox, I just needed to enter the proxy configuration script location and my username and password. I'm quite sure the reason I'm having this trouble is because I havn't entered a username and password. I'm not sure how to do this on a system wide level. ultimately I would like to be able to use package managers like synaptic but first I need them to be able to connect to the internet. EDIT As sugested I created a /etc/apt/apt.conf file like Acquire::http::Proxy "http://chrisav:[email protected]:8080"; Acquire::https::Proxy "https://chrisav:[email protected]:8080"; Acquire::ftp::Proxy "ftp://chrisav:[email protected]:8080"; Acquire::socks::Proxy "socks://chrisav:[email protected]:8080"; However I still cant ping wikipedia when I try installing stuff I get chris@chris-Ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install kate Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package kate

  • Image Erosion for face detection in C#

    - by Chris Dobinson
    Hi, I'm trying to implement face detection in C#. I currently have a black + white outline of a photo with a face within it (Here). However i'm now trying to remove the noise and then dilate the image in order to improve reliability when i implement the detection. The method I have so far is here: unsafe public Image Process(Image input) { Bitmap bmp = (Bitmap)input; Bitmap bmpSrc = (Bitmap)input; BitmapData bmData = bmp.LockBits(new Rectangle(0, 0, bmp.Width, bmp.Height), ImageLockMode.ReadWrite, PixelFormat.Format24bppRgb); int stride = bmData.Stride; int stride2 = bmData.Stride * 2; IntPtr Scan0 = bmData.Scan0; byte* p = (byte*)(void*)Scan0; int nOffset = stride - bmp.Width * 3; int nWidth = bmp.Width - 2; int nHeight = bmp.Height - 2; var w = bmp.Width; var h = bmp.Height; var rp = p; var empty = CompareEmptyColor; byte c, cm; int i = 0; // Erode every pixel for (int y = 0; y < h; y++) { for (int x = 0; x < w; x++, i++) { // Middle pixel cm = p[y * w + x]; if (cm == empty) { continue; } // Row 0 // Left pixel if (x - 2 > 0 && y - 2 > 0) { c = p[(y - 2) * w + (x - 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } // Middle left pixel if (x - 1 > 0 && y - 2 > 0) { c = p[(y - 2) * w + (x - 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (y - 2 > 0) { c = p[(y - 2) * w + x]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 1 < w && y - 2 > 0) { c = p[(y - 2) * w + (x + 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 2 < w && y - 2 > 0) { c = p[(y - 2) * w + (x + 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } // Row 1 // Left pixel if (x - 2 > 0 && y - 1 > 0) { c = p[(y - 1) * w + (x - 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x - 1 > 0 && y - 1 > 0) { c = p[(y - 1) * w + (x - 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (y - 1 > 0) { c = p[(y - 1) * w + x]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 1 < w && y - 1 > 0) { c = p[(y - 1) * w + (x + 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 2 < w && y - 1 > 0) { c = p[(y - 1) * w + (x + 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } // Row 2 if (x - 2 > 0) { c = p[y * w + (x - 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x - 1 > 0) { c = p[y * w + (x - 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 1 < w) { c = p[y * w + (x + 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 2 < w) { c = p[y * w + (x + 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } // Row 3 if (x - 2 > 0 && y + 1 < h) { c = p[(y + 1) * w + (x - 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x - 1 > 0 && y + 1 < h) { c = p[(y + 1) * w + (x - 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (y + 1 < h) { c = p[(y + 1) * w + x]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 1 < w && y + 1 < h) { c = p[(y + 1) * w + (x + 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 2 < w && y + 1 < h) { c = p[(y + 1) * w + (x + 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } // Row 4 if (x - 2 > 0 && y + 2 < h) { c = p[(y + 2) * w + (x - 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x - 1 > 0 && y + 2 < h) { c = p[(y + 2) * w + (x - 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (y + 2 < h) { c = p[(y + 2) * w + x]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 1 < w && y + 2 < h) { c = p[(y + 2) * w + (x + 1)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } if (x + 2 < w && y + 2 < h) { c = p[(y + 2) * w + (x + 2)]; if (c == empty) { continue; } } // If all neighboring pixels are processed // it's clear that the current pixel is not a boundary pixel. rp[i] = cm; } } bmpSrc.UnlockBits(bmData); return bmpSrc; } As I understand it, in order to erode the image (and remove the noise), we need to check each pixel to see if it's surrounding pixels are black, and if so, then it is a border pixel and we need not keep it, which i believe my code does, so it is beyond me why it doesn't work. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Chris

    I'm using 3DS Max 2010 with the KW x-porter plugin, which outputs a .X file (just downloaded the very latest version). Been getting some odd results: http://www.picvalley.net/u/2930/2265240220441812321333990933PAStFeSONWQslOrMQC5q.PNG Looks like the culling is screwed up. Note, that models I make in Milkshape don't seem to be having these problems. I've also tried to export an FBX file from 3DS Max 2010 and have been getting similar results. What are your suggestions in terms of exporting *.3DS models to a workable XNA form? What tools do you use?. To be clear, the model in question has none of these defects when viewed from similar angles in 3DS Max 2010. http://www.picvalley.net/u/2563/151728957814855401111333991302mSvEJ03Zv22GwHFgIhiV.PNG Any ideas on this oddity would also be appreciated! Edit 1 -- Add'l issue Forgot to mention, that the model otherwise seems alright, but that rotation seems to double -- in other words, when I scroll my camera view left to right, the model (whose draw I give the camera for the view and perspective matrices w/ BasicEffect seems to rotate twice as much as models I draw natively in XNA

This summer, the Applications User Experience team released the Oracle Fusion Applications user experience design patterns.Design patterns help create consistent experiences across devices.The launch has been very well received:Angelo Santagata, Senior Principal Technologist and Fusion Middleware evangelist for Oracle,  wrote this to the system integrator community: “The web site is the result of many years of Oracle R&D into user interface design for Fusion Applications and features a really cool web app which allows you to visualise the UI components in action.”  Grant Ronald, Director of Product Management, Application Development Framework (ADF) said: “It’s a science I don't understand, but now I don't have to ... Now you can learn from the UX experience of Fusion Applications.”Frank Nimphius, Senior Principal Product Manager, Oracle (ADF) wrote about the launch of the design patterns for the ADF Code Corner, and Jürgen Kress, Senior Manager EMEA Alliances & Channels for Fusion MiddleWare and Service Oriented Architecture, (SOA), shared the news with his Partner Community. Oracle Twitter followers also helped spread the message about the design patterns launch: ?@bex – Brian Huff, founder and Chief Software Architect for Bezzotech, and Oracle ACE Director:“Nifty! The Oracle Fusion UX team just released new ADF design patterns.”@maiko_rocha, Maiko Rocha, Oracle Consulting Solutions Architect and Oracle FMW engineer: “Haven't seen any other vendor offer such comprehensive UX Design Patterns catalog for free!”@zirous_chad, Chad Thompson, Senior Solutions Architect for Zirous, Inc. and ADF Developer:Wow - @ultan and company did a great job with the Fusion UX PatternsWhat is a user experience design pattern?A user experience design pattern is a re-usable, usability tested functional blueprint for a particular user experience.  Some examples are guided processes, shopping carts, and search and search results.  Ultan O’Broin discusses the top design patterns every developer should know.The patterns that were just released are based on thousands of hours of end-user field studies, state-of-the-art user interface assessments, and usability testing.  To be clear, these are functional design patterns, not technical design patterns that developers may be used to working with.  Because we know there is a gap, we are putting together some training that will help close that gap.Who should care?This is an offering targeted primarily at Application Development Framework (ADF) developers. If you are faced with the following questions regarding Fusion Applications, you will want to know and learn more:•    How do I build something that looks like Fusion Applications?•    How do I build a next-generation application?•    How do I extend a Fusion Application and maintain the user experience?•    I don’t want to re-invent the wheel on the user interface, so where do I start?•    I need to build something that will eventually co-exist with Fusion Applications. How do I do that?These questions are relevant to partners with an ADF competency, individual practitioners, or small consultancies with an ADF specialization, and customers who are trying to shift their IT staff over to supporting Fusion Applications.Where you can find out more?OnlineOur Fusion User Experience design patterns maven is Ultan O’Broin. The Oracle Partner Network is helping our team bring this first e-seminar to you in order to go into a more detail on what this means and how to take advantage of it:? • Reading POM's with it's children

    - by khmarbaise
    Based on the post it is mentioned (By Brett Porter) that a POM can be read. What i need is to read not only a single pom. I need to read the whole tree of pom's in a multimodule build. Starting with the root pom and it should read automatically the child pom's if it's possible? I need to do this in separate Java Code not in relationship with Maven itself.

  • mget: filename.xlsx: file already existst and xfer:clobber is unset

    - by Chris
    I am getting this: mget: filename.xlsx: file already existst and xfer:clobber is unset error when I try to download the contents of my ftp server. Basically it is setup using cygwin. We recently upgraded the server where all of the data is downloaded to on a set schedule. The old server was Windows server 2003, and the new server is windows server 2008. I am having issues when I try to download a file that is already in the folder. The client never changes the file name, so when we go to download it from the server we get that error. Is there anything i can put in the batch files, or something for it to just force it to replace that file? Thanks in advance

  • Want to use something like Citrix XenClient, Free Alternative?

    - by Chris
    I'm looking to go into IT, general office server management, and it looks like XenClient would be a awesome tool to use. If I get it right, you would store a central image of the OS you want to deploy (in an iso file) on the main server. Then use XenClient to pull that image down to the client, and it will then boot the OS inside of the virtual machine. Does it download the image of the OS and store it locally (like cloning the VM onto the client?) I'd love to find a free (possibly open source?) alternative to this, I keep on hearing about KVM in Linux and PXE booting a minimalistic OS to use remote KVMs.... Would that be what I'm looking for? Ideally, I'd like a system.. - That allows me to manage one central image for multiple clients (virtualized hardware) - Easily push a new VM onto the client for easy updating. - Be able to keep files in sync (but that might be a samba / active directory's job) Would those things be possible with some kind of free alternative? Some guidance would be greatly appreciated.
