  • Feeling a bit... under-challenged in my university course

    I'm currently a sophomore at my university, majoring in Computer Science. Obviously, there are some programming courses as part of my curriculum. However, I'm feeling very underwhelmed by its progress. I've self-taught myself a lot and like to code in my spare time as a hobby. I'm currently in Computer Science II. I never took CS 1 because it seemed rather basic -- I asked someone in the department if they would override my CS 1 requirement if I passed their final (which I did with flying colors). Anyway, the class is going by quite slowly. It seems like the rest of the class has a hard time understanding some basic concepts, which the professor needs to keep going over to help them understand. Is this normal? Looking at the class schedule, I seem to know everything except for one or two things near the very end of the semester. Is there a different perspective I can look at this through so it doesn't seem so boring?

My questions are: Are there any good courses (in the the colleges in silicon valley) on web Design (Photoshop), html, css, JS? Is it worth it?

  • Massive crash and kernel panic after updates yesterday, what now?

    Got 12.04 on an AMD+radeon machine, everything was running fine until last night when the update manager installed new packages, and now the moment I open a browser (firefox, chromium, anything) it crashes instantly. It says warning: at build/buildd/linux-3.5.0/arch/x86/kernel/smp.c:123 native_smp_send_reschedule+0x5b/0x60() Pid: 2432, comm: chrome_dbthread tainted: G D 3.5.0-2generic #2-ubuntu I already tried uninstalling the packages from the update log, didn't solve a thing. Depending of which browser I use I get a different reaction, like a complete freeze instead of a text console crash. Ideas? I really don't know what to do.

  • Dropbox 99% instalation crash. Strange "Searching" Ubuntu Software Center bug [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Dropbox fails to install, stuck at 99% I just installed Dropbox via Ubuntu Software Center, and the known crash of 99%, which was in Ubuntu Software center, happened. I want to remove Dropbox completely since something went wrong, but I can't. When I start my Ubuntu, it starts a process which eats up all of the CPU. In Ubuntu Software Center, there is a process "Searching Applying Changes", but nothing really happens. When I'm trying to uninstall Dropbox, nothing happens, since the seaching thing is "first". Please, I'm asking for a option which doesn't include proper reinstallation of Dropbox, only of getting rid of it, and without reinstalling the whole Ubuntu system (format, chaos etc).

  • What should be taught in a "Fundamentals of programming" course at university?

    I have started a new question (see here), because I think the topic is of importance in a more general form. The question is now: If you were a professor at a Computer Science Dept. in some university, what would make it into your course? This is a programming course, second term, first year computer science/computer engineering. Remember you have a limited amount of time, and students are of different levels of competence, and some may be scientists, but some will also go on to be programmers in companies of different kinds. You have to cater to all. Bonus: What language? (Although see this question for my current thoughts about this...) Maybe you want to attach a course outline from some university? See here for an even more general question about this. Answer: I can't really summarize this post... I guess it was too subjective. However, it looks like we have to cover the history of computing up to a certain extent, computer architecture (memory, registers, whatever), C, and finally some basic algos and data structures in a problem solving fashion. This will be the bare bones of the course. Thanks all. I will accept the most voted up answer to close the thread, as it should be done.

  • Does a manually initiated crash (bugcheck 0xdeaddead) trigger a disk-check?

    Windows has an advanced function built-in that lets a user manually initiate a BSOD. It is a debugging tool used to halt the system in the event of (though not necessarily limited to) a hang or freeze. When used, it causes a BSOD with the string MANUALLY_INITIATED_CRASH1 and whimsical code 0xDEADDEAD. The point to this crash is that it is purposely done by the user, so it is not (or at least should not) be an unpredictable event caused by hardware errors or bad drivers (at least not necessarily bad drivers). The question then is whether performing a manual crash properly flushes the disk caches and such so that the drive is in a valid state when rebooting and thus forgoing the need to have chkdsk run.

    I've seen this question and this article on how to debug a native Java crash. The article is with respect to Windows. What are the equivalent debugging aids on Linux? Note: All I have is this crash log from a user in the field. I do not have access to the machine on which the crash occurred. Update: I am pretty sure the crash is due to JNI code we have. For each course, course work constitutes 40% of the final mark while the exam constitutes 60% of the final mark. The server is running normally and there are no strange signs that the box has been compromised other than this entry. The only thing I can think of is I recently installed Varnish Cache following this tutorial. Given that I did not enter the cron job and that there appears to be nothing wrong, besides disabling that cron job what would be the appropriate course of action from this point?

    I am using jQuery to parse XML on my page using $.ajax(). My code block is below and I can get this working to display say each result on the XML file, but I am having trouble because each section can have MORE THAN ONE and im trying to print ALL grades that belong to ONE STUDENT.   • How do I insert an input's value into a separate form?

    I'm making a tool for my university that allows students to create a list of classes by doing the following: Searching by course title for their course via an autocomplete input field. Adding that course to a separate form that upon being submitted creates a course list. I am trying to link the autocomplete and the course list form with an 'add to course list' button that inserts a hidden input field into the course list form which can subsequently be submitted by a 'create course list' button. My question is this: How do I take the value of the autocomplete input and insert it into the course list form without using AJAX?
