  • Being pressured to GOTO the dark-side

    We have a situation at work where developers working on a legacy (core) system are being pressured into using GOTO statements when adding new features into existing code that is already infected with spagetti code. Now, I understand there may be arguments for using 'just one little GOTO' instead of spending the time on refactoring to a more maintainable solution. The issue is, this isolated 'just one little GOTO' isn't so isolated. At least once every week or so there is a new 'one little GOTO' to add. This codebase is already a horror to work with due to code dating back to or before 1984 being riddled with GOTOs that would make many Pastafarians believe it was inspired by the Flying Spagetti Monster itself. Unfortunately the language this is written in doesn't have any ready made refactoring tools, so it makes it harder to push the 'Refactor to increase productivity later' because short-term wins are the only wins paid attention to here... Has anyone else experienced this issue whereby everybody agrees that we cannot be adding new GOTOs to jump 2000 lines to a random section, but continually have Anaylsts insist on doing it just this one time and having management approve it? tldr; How can one go about addressing the issue of developers being pressured (forced) to continually add GOTO statements (by add, I mean add to jump to random sections many lines away) because it 'gets that feature in quicker'? I'm beginning to fear we may loses valuable developers to the raptors over this...

  • Over Optimistic Daily Productivity

    I'm a junior developer and have been working since I graduated last summer so coming up to a year now. I have this issue that is starting to get to me. Every night I think back to what I did that day, feel bad that I didn't get as much done as I would have liked and then tick off in my head all the things I'll get done the following day. Come the end of the following day I end haven't gotten through half of what I wanted to. This over optimism that I'm suffering from. Might it be just because I'm relatively new to the profession and aren't aware of how long things will actually take me. The work might be quick to think through in my head but all sorts of time sync's involved can bleed away the hours. If not that then perhaps it's the technology stack that I'm working on. SharePoint isn't the easiest thing to develop for and it's certainly something I came into not knowing a whole lot about. If it's because I'm not yet skilled enough to predict how long things will take me, is this trait of over optimistic predictions universal to the profession? I'd appreciate any input from those experienced with working with younger developers and those that might have suffered from this themselves. [EDIT] Perhaps I worded the question badly. I'm interested in just general day to day work rather than overall project completion estimation.

  • Find common nodes from two linked lists using recursion

    I have to write a method that returns a linked list with all the nodes that are common to two linked lists using recursion, without loops. For example, first list is 2 - 5 - 7 - 10 second list is 2 - 4 - 8 - 10 the list that would be returned is 2 - 10 I am getting nowhere with this.. What I have been think of was to check each value of the first list with each value of the second list recursively but the second list would then be cut by one node everytime and I cannot compare the next value in the first list with the the second list. I hope this makes sense... Can anyone help?

  • Entity Framework POCO objects

    I'm struggling with understanding Entity Framework and POCO objects. Here's what I'm trying to achieve. 1) Separate the DAL from the Business Layer by having my business layer use an interface to my DAL. Maybe use Unity to create my context. 2) Use Entity Framework inside my DAL. I have a Domain model with objects that reside in my business layer. I also have a database full of tables that doesn't really represent my domain model. I setup Entity Framework and generated POCO objects by using the ADO.NET POCO Generator extension. This gave me an object for each table in my database. Now I want to be able to say context.GetAll<User>(); and have it return a list of my User objects. The User object is in my business layer. Is that possible? Does that make sense or am I totally off and should start over? I'm guessing I need to use the repository pattern to achieve this, but I'm not sure. Can anyone help?

  • Ensure Oracle row represents a unique timespan

    I have to make a process in Oracle/PLSQL. I have to verify that the interval of time between start_date and end_date from a new row that I create must not intersect other start_dates and end_dates from other rows. Now I need to check each row for that condition and if it doesn't correspond the repetitive instruction should stop and after that to display a message such as "The interval of time given is not correct". I don't know how to make repetitive instructions in Oracle/PLSQL and I would appreciate if you would help me.

  • How important is it to use short names for Python packages and modules?

    PEP 8 says that Python package and module names should be short, since some file systems will truncate long names. And I'm trying to follow Python conventions in a new project. But I really like long, descriptive names. So I'm wondering, how short do names need to be to comply with PEP 8. And does anyone really worry about this anymore? I'm tempted to ignore this recommendation, and use longer names, thinking this isn't all that relevant anymore. Does anyone think this recommendation is still worth following? If yes, why? And how short is short enough?

  • PHP ingore case sensitivity when comparing array values

    I have to modify some code in a application I am working on that is using the array_diff($array1,$array2) method. The problem I am having is it is case sensitive and I need to have it return the correct value if the array values match even if the case is different. I don't want to change the case to lowercase because I need the value returned to keep its case. I'm a little confused as the best method to do this.

    I am using Rails 2.1 to output tables from a database. But the output includes lots of extra lines and tabs. I am using a while loop with lots of nested if statements. I am also wrapping all of my non-output lines in <%- code -%. Any idea what might be happening and a solution? Thanks, ex: <tr> <td>Some data</td> <td>more data</td>

  • The best alternative for String flyweight implementation in Java

    My application is multithreaded with intensive String processing. We are experiencing excessive memory consumption and profiling has demonstrated that this is due to String data. I think that memory consumption would benefit greatly from using some kind of flyweight pattern implementation or even cache (I know for sure that Strings are often duplicated, although I don't have any hard data in that regard). I have looked at Java Constant Pool and String.intern, but it seems that it can provoke some PermGen problems. What would be the best alternative for implementing application-wide, multithreaded pool of Strings in java?

  • Losing context from JQuery post with ASP.Net MVC

    I have a JQuery dialog box on a page that calls something like this: $.post("/MyController/MyAction", { myKey: key} //... And this successfully gets here: [HttpPost] public ActionResult MyAction(int myKey) { //do some stuff return RedirectToAction("AnotherAction"); } The problem is that the RedirectToAction has no effect on the webbrowser. I am guessing this is because the JQuery post is kinda on a different 'tread' so it doesn't know where to send the response? How do I get the browser to load the new response?

    In FitNesse, can variables be defined in terms of other variables? I want to do the equivalent of: int a=3; int b=a; To make this concrete, I have a variable defining the date: !define clock.date {2/2/2009} I then want to define some other variable ${other.date} based on it, something like: !define other.date {=${clock.date}=} However, this doesn't work. Is there any way to do this?

    Hi, I'm trying to look through an array of records (staff members), in this loop, I call a function which returns another array of records (appointments for each staff member). foreach($staffmembers as $staffmember) { $staffmember['appointments'] = get_staffmember_appointments_for_day($staffmember); // print_r($staffmember['appointments'] works fine } This is working OK, however, later on in the script, I need to loop through the records again, this time making use of the appointment arrays, however they are unavailable. foreach ($staffmembers as $staffmember) { //do some other stuff //print_r($staffmember['appointments'] no longer does anything } Normally, I would perform the function from the first loop, within the second, however this loop is already nested within two others, which would cause the same sql query to be run 168 times. Can anyone suggest a workaround? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • jquery delay a link from being followed

    I have a short css-based animation that I want to play out before a link is followed (a card that swooped in on page load swoops out after click). Currently, however, the page called loads too quickly. I want to be able to briefly delay the href from being followed. Here's what I've got: $(document).ready(function() { $("#card").css("top","0px"); $(".clickit").click(function() { $("#card").css("top","-500"); }); }); The first line swoops the card in on page load. After that is the click call that modifies the CSS, but like I said there needs to be some kind of delay in there because the page loads immediately, instead of after the animation. The CSS that is modified looks like this: #card { width: 400px; height: 500px; position: relative; top: -500px; -webkit-transition:all .5s; } (yes, I know this is webkit-only right now) This is a problem very similar to this question from 2008, but I know jQuery has been updated significantly since then, so I wanted to see if there was a more modern solution.     I have my menu button bringing up a Settings option, which brings up numerous ListPreferences such as weight and various sizes for glasses (it's a BAC calculator app). I'll pick one example... weight will work. Depending on how much you weigh it will affect your BAC. I have a int for Weight, set at 180. I would like someone to be able to go into the menu Settings, pick the "Weight" ListPreference, and choose between 100, 130, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, and 300. I already have the numbers show up (all of the arrays have been created) and I can choose one, but it doesn't do anything because it's not linked up with the int Weight variable. How do I go about linking the information?

  • Is it posible to use "confirmit" to open new url in the same window?

    I'm using a the confirmit java script function to redirect to a new url with a positive response. It doesn't do exactly what I want - and maybe I can't have exactly what I want. Here's what it does - onunload, with a positive response it opens the new url in a new window, which can be blocked by a pop-up blocker without the user even knowing, giving the impression that nothing happened. When it does open the new URL it opens in a new window making the desktop crowded. Its just not a great solution. What I want it to do - onunload I'd like it to open the new url in the same window and have it not be classified as a "pop-up" to be blocked. I tried switching to onbeforeunload.... nuthin.
