• Error message: "$(window).width is not a function"

  Hi all, i am trying to use a jQuery scrollbar called "Jscrollhorizontalpane". when i am trying to use it i get the following error message: "$(window).width is not a function" in firebug's console. i am new to jQuery do this might be very basic but still, i dont know what that means and why there is a problem. the scroller comes in a bundle with a few files, one of which is called "jScrollHorizontalPane.js" and i believe it holds the code for the scroller. i tried replacing $ signs there with the word "jQuery" (in case there is a conflict) but it didnt seem to help. also important to add that on the same page i am using another jQuery scroller (a vertical one as opposed to the horizontal on mentioned above) which works just fine and when i examined it's .js file, i could spot lines with "$(window).width". any ideas?

• TextMate: Preview in Firefox without having to save document first?

  Using TextMate: Is it possible to assign a shortcut to preview/refresh the currently edited HTML document in, say, Firefox, without having to first hit Save? I'm looking for the same functionality as TextMate's built-in Web Preview window, but I'd prefer an external browser instead of TextMate's. (Mainly in order to use a JavaScript console such as Firebug for instance). Would it be possible to pipe the currently unsaved document through the shell and then preview in Firefox. And if so, is there anyone having a TextMate command for this, willing to share it?

• jquery $.ajax call succeeds but returns nothing. (jsonp)

  $(document).ready(function() { $('#button').click(function() { try { var json = $.ajax({url : 'http://www.example.com/experimental/service.php', type : 'jsonp', success : function() {alert('success')}}); alert(json); } catch(err) { alert(err.description) } var sjson = JSON.stringify(json); $('#display').html(sjson); }) }) After a button is pressed I get an alert message that says "success" and also one that says undefined, referring to the fact that nothing was returned from the ajax call. I checked the firebug 'net' tab and indeed i get a succesful response from the server of "jsonp1272724228884( {} );" Any ideas?

• performance issue with a website.

  Hi, I have a website .. [SPAM LINK REMOVED]. When you see pages like [SPAM LINK REMOVED] and [SPAM LINK REMOVED]. These pages load a bit slowly in FF. Please see if the speed is reasonable or speed needs to improve and in IE 6 it takes ages to load the website. Please let me know what all should i do to increase the performance of website. I tried all the options given by firebug. But nothing much helped. If any1 can let me know where all i should take care to increase the performance it will be very helpful.

• Why is it when I set "closeOnEscape" to false and then "closeOnEscape" to true jquery dialog escape

  Hi I am using jquery ui 1.8 and I have a model dialog that popups up and if a user clicks on a checkbox another one comes up. This requires them to say "yes" or "no" so I removed the "X" on the dialog and put closeOnEscape to false. However I noticed when I did that the model dialog underneath it would close when they hit escape. So now when the one that pops up when the checkbox is checked I disable closeOnEscape on the first dialog box. When they close it I enable again yet it does not work. I am not sure why $("#Dialog").dialog( "option", "closeOnEscape", true); I even do this in firebug. I just open my first dialog up Do this in firebugs console $("#Dialog").dialog( "option", "closeOnEscape", false); Then verify that escape is now disabled. I then try to enable it again $("#Dialog").dialog( "option", "closeOnEscape", true); Yet it never enables.

• How Can I Determine if HTTP Requests/Responses are compressed in IE7?

  I'm trying to use Fiddler (v2.2.2.0) to see if HTTP traffic through IE7 is being compressed. I'm not seeing Accept-Encoding or Content-Encoding request/response headers being sent/returned and I do not need to decode the response data once it's arrived, which leads me to believe that the responses are NOT coming back compressed. However, when making the same requests using FireFox 3.5.7, I could see through FireBug that FF was sending Accept-Encoding and YSlow at least thought my data was coming back compressed. A comment in this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/897989/using-fiddler-to-check-iis-compression suggested that a proxy server may be to blame for stripping out headers and decompressing the content for security reasons. I am using Verizon FIOS for my broadband at home and am now wondering if Verizon is proxying my HTTP traffic? In short, how can I positively confirm/deny that responses are coming back compressed through IE? Thanks.

• Stylesheets loading but styles not showing...

  Hi- I have a website I created in VS2010 and am trying to run with IIS7. My website starts in all major browsers but for some reason the styles are not applied even though I've confirmed using Firebug that the stylesheets have indeed loaded. Also, when I use the inspect tool to click on an element, I can see in the right-side box the specific styles that are supposed to be applied. I thought this might be a permissions issue but I think I've got those set properly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• finding the value of radio button with jquery

  i have this code below to show different divs when i choose certain radio buttons: if ($("input[@name='exerciseRB']:checked").val() == 'New') { $("#newExercise").show(); $("#existingExercise").hide(); } else { $("#newExercise").hide(); $("#existingExercise").show(); } at first, i just had two radio buttons (both named exerciseRB and everything works fine. Now, later in my web page i added two new radio buttons (with the name lessonRB). The issue is that once i added these other new radio buttons when i look up this in firebug: $("input[@name='exerciseRB']:checked") i actually get an array back with both the exerciseRB item as well as the lessonRB item. Its almost as if the @name='exerciseRB' is being ignored. any ideas here?

• Can't type anything in inputs or textareas

  Hello, I have a problem: I've add a Jquery UI drag-n-drop widget to my page, but after that I can't type anything into inputs or textareas. I use jQuery 1.4.2 and jQuery UI 1.8rc3, and tiny_mce for convert textareas into WYSIWUG editor (I've tried to disable tiny_mce). When I put $("input").click( function(){ alert('clicked!'); }); - it's working(I have an alert). When I get focused to any input I even can't refresh page by F5 and go to the next element by Tab key. I hope You can help me to understand what's wrong with this code.

• Iframe contents not accessible from a page in different domain

  Need some help from javascript gurus. I have one page where http://www.google.com/finance/converter is embedded inside IFrame. I am able to get the event notification whenever Google Finance page loads. Now problem is this that contents of this page is not accessible through javascript. It seems to be some security issue (firebug notified). Is there any workaround so that I can access values (result and select boxes) using javascript? • jQuery is only returning first item

  For some strange reason, whenever I have a selector and expect to get multiple items, jQuery is only returning the first item, instead of the entire collection. This is the HTML I have: <a id="reply-424880" class="reply" href="#" rel="nofollow">Reply</a> <a id="reply-424885" class="reply" href="#" rel="nofollow">Reply</a> And the selector: $('.reply').unbind('click').click(function(event) { ... } I have tried debugging using FireBug, and still get the same results. Using the work around I can get it to work: $('a').each(function (index, element) { if ($(element).attr('class') == 'reply') { $(this).unbind('click').click(function(event) { ... }); } }); I would like to use the built-in functionality instead of my work around. Any idea why only the first element would be returned?

• How do you send an array as part of an (jquery) ajax request

  I tried to send an array as part of an ajax request like this: var query = []; // in between I add some values to 'query' $.ajax({ url: "MyServlet", data: query, dataType: "json", success: function(noOfResults) { alert(noOfResults); } }); } I wanted to see what I get back in the servlet, so I used this line: System.out.println(request.getParameterMap().toString()); Which returned {} suggesting an empty map. Firebug tells me I am getting a 400 bad request error If I send a queryString like attribute=value as the 'data' then everything works fine, so it has to do with not being able to send an array as is. What do I have to do to get that data into the servlet for further processing. I don't want to pull it out and turn it into a queryString in the JS if I can avoid it. EDIT: I used the .serializeArray() (jQuery) function before sending the data. I don't get the 400 but nothing useful is being sent through.

• jQuery Columnizer plugin only working correctly on window resize.

  Hi, I'm using the jQuery Columnizer plugin, and I'm running into a weird problem. Using 3 columns, I columnize content from a hidden div into a target div. It distributes only one paragraph to each of the first two columns and then puts all the remaining paragraphs into the last column. But the strange thing is that it auto-corrects itself when the window is resized. I'm guessing it has something to do with the target div resizing since opening a firebug console window also causes it to auto-correct itself. Setting lastNeverTallest:true doesn't seem to do anything. $('#hidden-about').columnize({ columns: 3, target: '#interiors', lastNeverTallest: true, doneFunc: function() { $('#interiors').css('white-space', 'normal'); $('#interiors').fadeIn(200); } Thanks for any suggestions!

  If you have an item where you allow users to add comments, how can you pass which item the user is replying too? I've though of using a hidden field in a form, however this can be easily changed using plugins such as firebug: <form method="post" action="blah"> <input type="hidden" name="item_id" value="<?php echo $item_id; ?>"> <!-- other form data here --> <input type="submit" name="submit"> </form> Or just simply using a session: $_SESSION['item_id'] = $item_id Is there a safe way to send the item data in a form?

  ECMAScript 5 has the filter() prototype for Array types, but not Object types, if I understand correctly. How would I implement a filter() for Objects in JavaScript? Let's say I have this object: var foo = { bar: "Yes" }; And I want to write a filter() that works on Objects: Object.prototype.filter = function(predicate) { var result = {}; for (key in this) { if (this.hasOwnProperty(key) && !predicate(this[key])) { result[key] = this[key]; } } return result; }; This works when I use it in jsfiddle (http://jsfiddle.net/MPUnL/4/), but when I add it to my site that uses jQuery 1.5 and jQuery UI 1.8.9, I get JavaScript errors in FireBug.

• How do I go about getting the Ajax Queue plugin working in jQuery 1.3?

  I have an app that sends multiple Ajax requests simultaneously. I was originally running into race conditions until I discovered the jQuery Ajax Queue plugin, which works great with jQuery 1.2, but fails with jQuery 1.3. There are actually two different versions of the plugin; I am currently using this one which is the same as the first but just adds a bit more functionality. Anyway, I am using Firebug on Firefox 3.0.10 and when I run my code I don't receive any explicit errors, the call is just never returned. I could obviously continue using v1.2 but would really like to learn why this plugin fails with the latest release and what I can do to get it working. Thanks in advance.

• Does Jquery UI Dialog Destroy event remove the html too?

  Hi I have a dialog that displays a form. When they save or close the dialog I call up the jquery dialog destroy method. However I am not clear if it removes the html div. From the description I would not think so Remove the dialog functionality completely. This will return the element back to its pre-init state. However when looking with firebug I can't see the html container so I am not sure if it gets removed or what. I am not sure if it is because I make the div for the dialog on the fly and use jquery to add it to the page.

• Edit Text in a Webpage with Internet Explorer 8

  Internet Explorer is often decried as the worst browser for web developers, but IE8 actually offers a very nice set of developer tools.  Here we’ll look at a unique way to use them to edit the text on any webpage. How to edit text in a webpage IE8’s developer tools make it easy to make changes to a webpage and view them directly.  Simply browse to the webpage of your choice, and press the F12 key on your keyboard.  Alternately, you can click the Tools button, and select Developer tools from the list. This opens the developer tools.  To do our editing, we want to select the mouse button on the toolbar “Select Element by Click” tool. Now, click on any spot of the webpage in IE8 that you want to edit.  Here, let’s edit the footer of Google.com.  Notice it places a blue box around any element you hover over to make it easy to choose exactly what you want to edit. In the developer tools window, the element you selected before is now highlighted.  Click the plus button beside that entry if the text you want to edit is not visible.   Now, click the text you wish to change, and enter what you wish in the box.  For fun, we changed the copyright to say “©2010 Microsoft”. Go back to IE to see the changes on the page! You can also change a link on a page this way: Or you can even change the text on a button: Here’s our edited Google.com: This may be fun for playing a trick on someone or simply for a funny screenshot, but it can be very useful, too.  You could test how changes in fontsize would change how a website looks, or see how a button would look with a different label.  It can also be useful when taking screenshots.  For instance, if I want to show a friend how to do something in Gmail but don’t want to reveal my email address, I could edit the text on the top right before I took the screenshot.  Here I changed my Gmail address to [email protected]. • Fill a Flash Drive with Portable Software using Lupo PenSuite

  A flash drive full of portable software is helpful to have along wherever you go. The Lupo PenSuite lets you choose from three different versions to get the best fit for your everyday needs. Note: If running the full version you will need a 512 MB USB flash drive or larger. Using Lupo PenSuite The one window to watch for during the setup process is where you have the opportunity to add a specific language pack if needed. Outside of that all that you need to do is sit back and wait for the suite to be extracted. Note: Extraction times will vary based on version and extraction location. Here we browsed to our flash drive to extract it to… Once the setup process is complete locate and double click the Lupo_PenSuite.exe file. This one time window will present you the opportunity to start using the suite immediately, or go directly into the options. When the suite is active you will have a new system tray icon that operates as a start menu button. At the bottom you can monitor the remaining room on your flash drive, and use the close button to exit the suite (may display as a power button based on menu theme). A quick look at the set up inside the suite. There is a pre-configured area for organizing and storing your personal files. Prefer a classic style menu? Just select for it in the options (various tab) and enjoy a smaller streamlined look. Note: You can also change the theme for the regular menu and add a user pic. The suite provides access to your portable software and online sites. You get to enjoy the best of both as shown in the following examples. Websites will open using the suite’s portable Firefox install. VLC is ready to play your downloaded videos. The suite also has some very nice photo editing programs added in. Installing Additional Apps If one of your favorite programs is not included in the suite version, it only takes a few minutes to add it in. Go to the Additional Apps webpage, download the app(s), and extract them onto your hard-drive. Note: Link for additional apps webpage provided below. Add the extracted app(s) to the MyApps folder in the suite’s folder hierarchy. Click on ASuite in the suite’s start menu. Drag and drop the portable app’s exe file into the MyApps section in the ASuite window. Your new software’s shortcut should display as shown here. Close this window when finished. Checking the suite’s start menu will show your new software ready to be used. Conclusion If you need a good portable software collection to carry with you on a flash drive then Lupo PenSuite is definitely worth taking a look at. • Motorola Droid App Recommendations

  Just as a disclaimer, the views and opinions expressed in this post are solely my own and I’m not getting paid or compensated for anything.     Ok, so I’m one of the crazy few who went out and bought a Droid the week it was released a few months back.  The Motorola Droid was a MAJOR upgrade in phone capabilities for me as my previous phone had no GPS, no web access, limited apps, etc.  I now use my Droid for so much of my life from work to personal to community based events.  Since I’ve been using my Droid for awhile, a number of friends (@toddklindt, @spmcdonough, @jfroushiii, and many more) who later got a Droid asked me which apps I recommended.  While there are a few sites on the web listing out useful Android apps, here’s my quick list (with a few updates since first put together.) Note: * denotes a highly recommended app     Android App Recommendations for Motorola Droid (Updated after 2.1 update) RemoteDroid – install a thin client on another computer and Droid becomes mouse pad / keyboard, control computer remotely PdaNet – free version allows tethering (only to HTTP, no HTTPS) without paying extra monthly charge.  A paid version allows HTTPS access. SportsTap – keep track of about a dozen sports, favorite teams, etc *Movies – setup favorite theaters, find movie times, buy tickets, etc WeatherBug elite – paid app, but gives weather alerts, 4 day forecast, etc.  Free version also exists.  (Update: Android 2.1 offers free weather app, but I still prefer WeatherBug.) *Advanced Task Killer – manually free up memory and kill apps not needed Google Voice – have to have a Google Voice account to really use, but allows visual voice mail, sending calls to specific phones, and too many other things to list AndroZip – access your phone memory like a file system Twidroid – best Twitter client I’ve found so far, but personal preference varies.  I’m using free version and suits me just fine. Skype (beta) – I only use this to send chat messages, not sure how/if phone calls works on this. (Update: Skype Mobile app just released, but uninstalled after few days as it kept launching in background and using up memory when not wanted.) *NewsRob – RSS reader syncs to Google Reader.  I use this multiple times a day, excellent app. (Update: this app does ask for your Google username and password, so security minded folks be cautioned.) ConnectBot – don’t use often myself, but allows SSH into remote computer.  Great if you have a need for remote manage server. Speed Test – same as the online website, allows finding upload/download speeds. WiFinder – store wifi preferences and find wifi spots in area. TagReader – simple Microsoft Tag Reader, works great. *Google Listen – audible podcast catcher that allows putting items into a queue, sync with Google Reader RSS, etc. I personally love this app which has now replaced the iPod I used to use in my car, but have heard mixed reviews from others. Robo Defense – (paid app) tower defense game but with RPG elements to upgrade towers over lifetime playing. I’ve never played FieldRunners but I’m told very similar in offering. Nice distraction when in airport or have some time to burn. Phit Droid 3rd Edition – drag and drop block shapes into a rectangle box, simple game to pass the time with literally 1000s of levels. Note this game has been updated dozens of times with numerous editions so unsure exactly which are still on the market. • How do I install Revenge of the Titans?

  I've downloaded the .deb file of Revenge of the Titans, and installed it using Ubuntu Software Center. Now, when I try to launch it using the software launcher nothing happens. Any ideas? The .deb file was downloaded from the Humble Indie Bundle. I am unable to launch it from the terminal ( the command revenge-of-the-titans says command not found ). I also tried the .tar.gz. When I extract it and run ./revenge.sh , nothing happens. No output on the terminal or anything at all. I have set chmod 777 revenge.sh as well. The command /opt/revengeofthetitans/revenge.sh does not give any output. • How to check if a cdrom is in the tray remotely (via ssh)?

  I have a server running Ubuntu 10.04 (it's on the other side of the world and I haven't built up the wherewithal to upgrade it remotely yet) and I have been told that there is a CD in one of it's two CD drives. I want to rip an image of the cd and then download it to my local computer (I don't need help with either of these steps). However, I cannot seem to confirm whether or not there actually is a CD in the drive as I was told. It did not automatically mount anywhere (which I'm thinking might just be a result of it being a headless server not running X, nautilus, or any of the other nice user friendly things).
