  • AD Local Admins without password sharing

    My team is building out an Active Directory environment in a small grad school with support for general computer labs, and staff/faculty machine and account management. We have a team of student consultants that are hired to do general help desk work. As of now we have a local admin account on every machine. It has the same password and all of us know it. I know it's not best practice and I want to avoid this with the new setup. We want to have local admin accounts in case there are network issues that prevent AD authentication, but we do not want this account to be generic with a shared password. Is there a way we can get each machine to cache the necessary information to authenticate a group of local admins so that if AD is somehow inaccessible, student consultants can still login with their AD admin accounts?

  • Force password protection in the iPad

    I am unable to find out how to force the iPad ask for my password when I want to use certain applications (e.g. e-mail) I want to be able to share the iPad but I don't want anyone to have access to my e-mail account. The only way I can see to do this is to create and delete the account every time I use it, but this is an extreme hassle. Ideally it should simply ask for my password whenever I want to access my e-mail. How can I do this?

    I've been trying to setup a password protected directory in a SSL website as follows: /etc/nginx/sites-available/default server { listen 443: ssl on; ssl_certificate /usr/certs/server.crt; ssl_certificate_key /usr/certs/server.key; server_name server1.example.com; root /var/www/example.com/htdocs/; index index.html; location /secure/ { auth_basic "Restricted"; auth_basic_user_file /var/www/example.com/.htpasswd; } } The problem is when I try to access the URL https://server1.example.com/secure/, I get a "404: Not Found" error page. My error.log shows the following error: 011/11/26 03:09:06 [error] 10913#0: *1 no user/password was provided for basic authentication, client: 192.168.0.24, server: server1.example.com, request: "GET /secure/ HTTP/1.1", host: "server1.example.com" However, I was able to setup password protected directories for a normal HTTP virtual host without any problems. Is it a problem with the config or something else?

But where and how to you specify the password?   • Runas command for user without password

    I want to use the runas command in CMD and from Batch files to gain elevated permissions, but I don't have an admin password on my PC because it's my home computer and I'm the only user. Every time I try to use the runas command it asks me for a password, then tells me that blank passwords are not permitted, is there any way round this? I know I can just right click and select run as administrator, but I would much rather have a command that can do it as that is not always an option, and it's just a bit of a pain. I could just be making some kind of basic mistake as I'm not hugely experienced with command prompt, but I'm not completely clueless.

  • TPM had to be reintialized: Does a new recovery password have to be uploaded to AD?

    Some way some how, a user's machine couldn't get read the bitlocker password off of the TPM chip, and I had to enter the recovery key (stored in AD) to get in. No big deal, but once in the machine, I tried to suspend bitlocker per recovery documentation, and got an error message about the TPM not being initialized. I knew the TPM was on and activated in the BIOS, but Windows still made me reinitialize the TPM chip, and in the process it created a new TPM owner password. I found that odd because it prompted me to save this password or print it (there wasn't an option not to), but it made no reference of a recovery password, nor did it back this password up to AD. After the user took her laptop and left I started thinking that if the TPM password change, does the recovery password change also? If so, that new recovery password will need to be uploaded to AD, but MS' documentation doesn't make that clear, and doesn't back up the new recovery key (if one exists) to AD automatically when the group policy says it must, and from a network standpoint AD is accessible.

    Deployed Web Application Requests for User Name and Password I recently deployed a .NET web application into the server. Authentication mode is set to Windows (since the application is accessible only to Intranet users. Testing some machines, the application loads up properly. For some machines, a logon dialog window appears asking for User Name or Password. These dialog windows are those that you also normally see when you are trying to log into a Windows domain. Any idea why this happens randomly? Thanks.

    Using instructions from this site but varying them just a little i created a CA using -newca, i copied cacert.pem to my comp and imported as trusted issuer in IE. I then did -newreq and -sign (note: i do /full/path/CA.sh -cmd and not sh CA.sh -cmd) and moved the cert and key to apache. I visited the site in IE and using .NET code and it appears trusted, great (unless i write www. in front which is expected). But every time i restart apache i need to type in my password for the site(s?). How can i make it so i DO NOT need to type in the password?

    I am attempting to install a network management package called cacti onto Ubuntu running under Windows Virtual PC. I attempted to install MySQL as it is one of cacti's dependencies. I can install and start the MySQL server, but whenever I try to access it in any other way, such as to change the password, I get the error message Access denied for user 'root@localhost' (using password:NO). I would like to know what is causing this and how to fix it. Edit: (just in case my comments are not visible) The answers from HD and Devin Ceartas did not work for me.

    One of the functions of an app I am making involves logging the user into our Campus Portal website. For ease of use, the user may enter a username and password into the app once, and it will be saved for all future log-ins. When the user clicks a button, the information will automatically be sent to log in, and the website will be displayed in a UIWebView. Let us say that the username and password are each stored in an NSString. How can I use this data to log in to this website programmatically and display the page it in a UIWebView? I know little about posting and forms, so any help is appreciated. Would something like this Stackoverflow answer help? I've read that I should store the password as a char[] but still, I'm concerned about storing the password in the clear at all.     I've got Ubuntu 9.10 with a user account for my wife, and one for myself. "Wake-from-screensaver" should result in "choose user" without having to enter any password. I know how to do that in Windows, but I'm not good with Linux (yet). Part of this was answered in this question which helped me get past the login screen without passwords (after booting, and after choosing "switch user"), but once the screensaver kicks in and I wake it up again, the system does not present the "choose user" screen. Instead, it either turns off the screensaver and presents the desktop of the most recent user, or (if the screensaver is set to lock the screen) prompt for the user's password (which can be handily surpassed by clicking the "switch user" button and choosing the same user again). So, the login ("choose user") screen has been dealt with. How do I make the (any) screensaver return to the login screen at wake, rather than to the current user's desktop? Windows can do this, I'm sure Linux can too - but how?

However when the password is incorrect this shows as 2 invalid attempts in AD. So what happens is when the AD admin allows 5 invalid attempts the user is locked out on the 3rd attempt. when i look in the AD's event log 1 see 2 entries. 1)Pre-authentication failed: 2)Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Logon account: [email protected] Source Workstation: WKSXXXX Error Code: 0xC000006A Stepping thro the code i see 2 event entries on the line de.RefreshCache() I tried using de.NativeObject to see if that would solve the problem. No Dice Anyone have any pointers?
