  • Make Browsing Safer for Children in Google Chrome

    If you are worried about the websites that your children could accidentally visit while browsing, then you may want to have a look at the Kid Safe – LinkExtend extension for Google Chrome. Kid Safe – LinkExtend in Action Before going any further you may want to have a quick look at the options. Everything is enabled by default but it is recommended that you disable the “Allow entering unsafe sites Option”. For our first example we visited “chatroulette.com”. As you can see in the screenshot WOT and McAfee SiteAdvisor gave the website a “green rating” but when it came specifically to its’ level of appropriateness for children LinkExtend gave it a “yellow rating”. Our second example was “hotbabes.com”…obviously not a good website for any child to visit. You can see that the entire window area has been totally “blacked out” and the available information for this site from each of the six ratings sources. The “Toolbar Button” is also displaying a “red rating”… Notice the two links at the bottom of the ratings screen…both will be visible if the “Allow entering unsafe sites Option” is not disabled (see Options above). You can see the difference for the links at the bottom of the ratings screen if you have the “Allow entering unsafe sites Option” disabled. Definitely much much better… Clicking on the “Find Kids Sites Link” will navigate the tab to the Yahoo! Kids website. The extension will also place “ratings buttons” beside search results at Google. As you can see in the screenshot below not all of the results had information available for them at this time. But it is certainly a lot better than nothing at all when it comes to keeping your children safe. A close-up look at the ratings for one of the search results. Conclusion While no browser add-in makes for a perfect solution the Kid Safe – LinkExtend extension will definitely be a helpful addition to your family’s Chrome browser.     Hello I just stumbled upon this link and wanted to try it out. Yet, if I open a google spreadsheet, I have no scripts submenu under the tools menu. This was with firefox 3.0.15 and IE 7. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything that indicated why there wouldn't be such menus with my spreadsheets. Does someone know more about this? Thanks / Rene

    In a Google Spreadsheet, is it possible to take the sum of only the colored cells in a column? I have a column of numbers, where I've changed the background color of some of the cells to blue. All of the other cells in the column have the regular white background. Is it possible to create a formula to add up only the colored cells in the column? Thanks so much!

  • Retry failed downloads - Google Music Manager

    After my old computer died I wanted to download my music collection from Google Music - which is very easy with Googles Music Manager. After a few hours it had downloaded my library, but also showed around 300 download errors. Downloading the library another time, however, made different files fail (Which tells me that the error isn't connected to the files as such). Does anybody know of a way how to retry only the songs that failed downloading?

    hi, I'm using the geocoder from Google API v3 to display a map of a country. I get the recommended viewport for the country but when I want to fit the map to this viewport, it does not work (see the bounds before and after calling the fitBounds function in the code below). What am I doing wrong?   • Google Social Graph API, working as intended?

    Hey, I'm experiencing some problems with Google's social graph API. It seems that for some parameters passed to 'otherme' nothing is returned. I'll use Robert Scoble's profiles as an example (as he's a guy sure to be everywhere on the web). If I query: http://socialgraph.apis.google.com/otherme?q=http://twitter.com/scobleizer&pretty=1 I get results, as expected. However, if I query: http://socialgraph.apis.google.com/otherme?q=http://delicious.com/scobleizer&pretty=1 Nothing is returned, even though 'http://delicious.com/scobleizer' is listed in the previous results... Any thoughts? Thanks

    Hi all, I am beginning to use the google data api (specifically for the finance app). I can read my portfolio's just fine, so I am authenticating correctly (or so I think). However, when i try and create a portfolio, I get a 'feed is read-only' error. The constructor for the service: public class FinanceService : Service, IService { public FinanceService(string applicationName) : base ("finance", applicationName) { this.RequestFactory = new GDataGAuthRequestFactory("finance", applicationName) { ProtocolMajor = 3 }; } } and saving it is private const string _schema = "http://schemas.google.com/finance/2007"; private const string _feed = "http://finance.google.com/finance/feeds/default/portfolios"; AtomFeed atomFeed = new AtomFeed(new Uri(_feed), this.FinanceService); return this.FinanceService.Insert(atomFeed, this as AtomEntry) as PortfolioEntry; Any idea why the atomFeed would come back ReadOnly? The credentials are legit, and I can get my current portfolios without a problem.

I tried Google forums but to no avail. Is there anyone here who can help me further? Thanks in advance!   • How do I correctly Re-render a Recaptcha in ASP.NET MVC 2 after an AJAX POST

    Ok... I've downloaded and implemented this Recaptcha implementation for MVC which uses the ModelState to confirm the validity of the captcha control. It works brilliantly... except when I start to use it in an AJAX Form. In a nutshell, when a div is re-rendered with AJAX, the ReCaptcha that it should contain does not appear, even though the relevant <scripts> are in the source after the partial render. Code Below. using (Ajax.BeginForm("CreateComment", "Blog", new AjaxOptions() { HttpMethod = "POST", UpdateTargetId = "CommentAdd", OnComplete="ReloadRecaptcha", OnSuccess = "ShowComment", OnFailure = "ShowComment", OnBegin = "HideComment" })) {%> <fieldset class="comment"> <legend>Add New Comment</legend> <%= Html.ValidationSummary()%> <table class="postdetails"> <tbody> <tr> <td rowspan="3" id="blahCaptcha"> <%= Html.CreateRecaptcha("recaptcha", "blackglass") %> </td> .... Remainder of Form Omitted for Brevity I've confirmed the Form is perfectly functional when the Recaptcha Control is not present and the Javascript calls in the AjaxOptions are all working fine. The problem is that if the ModelState is Invalid as a result of the Recaptcha or some other validation, then the ActionResult returns the View to reshow the form. I've checked the source and the <script> & <noscript> blocks are present in the HTML so the HTML Helper function below is obviously working <%= Html.CreateRecaptcha("recaptcha", "blackglass") %> I assume this has something to do with scripts injected into the DOM by AJAX are not re-executed. As you can see from the HTML snippet above, I've tried to add an OnComplete= javascript function to re-create the Captcha on the client side, but although the script executes with no errors, it doesn't work.     Do you have a Google Reader account and need a quick simple way to subscribe to new RSS feeds while you browse? Then you will definitely want to have a look at the Chrome Reader extension for Chrome. Before If you want to add a new feed to your Google Reader account in Chrome then you have to do it manually. A single feed now and then is not a problem but if you are wanting to build a serious set of RSS feeds quickly then not so good. Chrome Reader in Action Once the extension is installed you are ready to go. Any time that you visit a webpage with an RSS feed available you will see the familiar orange feed icon appear in your “Address Bar”. To add the feed to your Google Reader account just click on the orange feed icon. Note: You will need to be logged into your Google Reader account in your browser. When you click on the orange feed icon a small drop-down window will appear where you can modify the feed name and/or add it to a “custom folder” if desired. Notice that the orange feed icon has changed to the familiar Google Reader icon indicating that the feed has been added to the account.
