  • Externalising Google Maps InfoWindow Content When Marker Is Selected

    - by Mark
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows whether it is possible to take the content of a Google Maps InfoWindow and place it in an external DIV when the marker on the map is clicked? I've had a good dig around both the API docs and Google to see if I can find any examples or information relating to this but have had no luck so far. However I've not had a lot of time since I got asked about this one so I have had to skim a bit so it could be that I've missed something but nothing seems to be jumping out at me. Essentially I'd just like to know if this is indeed possible so that I don't waste anymore time researching something that is currently not possible with Google Maps. However if anyone has any code, examples, or ideas about how to go about doing this then that would be a very much appreciated! Thanks, Mark

  • ClientLogin for Picasa Web Albums Data API with a Google App Domain login

    - by mlsteeves
    I'm using the Picasa Web Albums Data API to access users' photo albums from a WPF application. I've followed the code located here: http://code.google.com/apis/gdata/clientlogin.html I have created a Picasa Web Albums account with a Google Apps (hosted) account. Whenever I tried logging in with my WPF application, I get the "BadAuthentication" error code returned. Hoping someone has an idea what I'm doing wrong. Note, that this works when I login with a normal Google account. Here is a snippet of my code: GDataGAuthRequestFactory authFactory = new GDataGAuthRequestFactory("lh2", _appName); authFactory.AccountType = "HOSTED_OR_GOOGLE"; _picasaService = new PicasaService(authFactory.ApplicationName); _picasaService.RequestFactory = authFactory; _picasaService.setUserCredentials(username, password); return _picasaService.QueryAuthenticationToken();

  • Blacklisting specific roads from Google Maps/Mapquest?

    - by Aaron
I'm looking to build a custom view of a Google Maps type of application for providing directions, but I need to blacklist specific roads or sections of roads. I'm not talking just avoiding highways or Toll Roads. I've been looking through the Google Maps and Mapquest APIs but haven't found anything of use yet. Initially I'm just looking to manually blacklist specific roads that I do not want to drive on, but eventually would like there to be some sort of automatic detection or suggestion. Is there built-in functionality to support blacklisting specific roads in Google Maps or Mapquest? Or is there any known way to hack it together?

  • Google Translation API not working for even one page long documents

    - by Saubhagya
I'm using Google Translation API to translate text from Chinese Simplified to English in my C# program. The problem is if the text is small (around one line) the API is able to translate it, but if the text is larger (more than 3 lines) is gives an exception saying "The remote server returned an unexpected response: (414) Request-URI Too Large.". However if I use translate.google.com in my browser that works fine. Please tell me how can I process large documents using Google Translate API in my desktop application written in C#.

  • Adding Street View controls (the two icons just above the +) to a Google Map (v3)

    - by AlexV
It's probably something really simple, but I can't find it in the docs and I can't find a map with it to check it's source... I use version 3 of the API. I guess it's an something to add in myOptions? var latlng = new google.maps.LatLng(-34.397, 150.644); var myOptions = { zoom: 8, center: latlng, mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP } map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map_canvas'), myOptions); Currently I only have dragging controls and the zoom pane controls. I would like to have the two Street View controls icons too. If you want full source, I'm using this example as a base (how would you add Street View controls to this example?).

  • Google Map V3 Constants as Variables

    - by Beardy
In the example below I am trying to update the map type depending on the value of the selected option type. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to load the maptype into the google.maps.MapTypeId which is frustrating. I have tried it as a string as well as var gmapsMapType = google.maps.MapTypeId.++maptype; and I feel I am missing something here. HTML <select id="maptype" name="maptype"> <option selected="selected" value="RoadMap">Road Map</option> <option value="Satellite">Satellite</option> <option value="Hybrid">Hybrid</option> <option value="Terrain">Terrain</option> </select> JQUERY var maptype = $('#maptype>option:selected').val().toUpperCase(); var gmapsMapType = google.maps.MapTypeId.+maptype; map.setMapTypeId(gmapsMapType); Help is appreciated.

  • How does Google Analytics save data to a database

    - by Pranz
Hello everyone, I am making a Google Analytics like project for my school assignment. I have two questions primarily: 1) Exactly when does Google store the data to the database? When it does it use XHR with some server side scripting language to store it to the database or is there a way to do it using plain javascript? 2) How do I get the IP address of a user from Javascript? How does Google do for Analytics?? Thanks for all the help. Pranz

  • Passing XML markers to Google Map

    - by djmadscribbler
I've been creating a V3 Google map based on this example from Mike Williams http://www.geocodezip.com/v3_MW_example_map3.html I've run into a bit of a problem though. If I have no parameters in my URL then I get the error "id is undefined idmarkers [id.toLowerCase()] = marker;" in Firebug and only one marker will show up. If I have a parameter (?id=105 for example) then all the sidebar links say 105 (or whatever the parameter in the URL was) instead of their respective label as listed in the XML file and a random infowindow will be opened instead of the window for the id in the URL. Here is my javascript: var map = null; var lastmarker = null; // ========== Read paramaters that have been passed in ========== // Before we go looking for the passed parameters, set some defaults // in case there are no parameters var id; var index = -1; // these set the initial center, zoom and maptype for the map // if it is not specified in the query string var lat = 42.194741; var lng = -121.700301; var zoom = 18; var maptype = google.maps.MapTypeId.HYBRID; function MapTypeId2UrlValue(maptype) { var urlValue = 'm'; switch (maptype) { case google.maps.MapTypeId.HYBRID: urlValue = 'h'; break; case google.maps.MapTypeId.SATELLITE: urlValue = 'k'; break; case google.maps.MapTypeId.TERRAIN: urlValue = 't'; break; default: case google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP: urlValue = 'm'; break; } return urlValue; } // If there are any parameters at eh end of the URL, they will be in location.search // looking something like "?marker=3" // skip the first character, we are not interested in the "?" var query = location.search.substring(1); // split the rest at each "&" character to give a list of "argname=value" pairs var pairs = query.split("&"); for (var i = 0; i < pairs.length; i++) { // break each pair at the first "=" to obtain the argname and value var pos = pairs[i].indexOf("="); var argname = pairs[i].substring(0, pos).toLowerCase(); var value = pairs[i].substring(pos + 1).toLowerCase(); // process each possible argname - use unescape() if theres any chance of spaces if (argname == "id") { id = unescape(value); } if (argname == "marker") { index = parseFloat(value); } if (argname == "lat") { lat = parseFloat(value); } if (argname == "lng") { lng = parseFloat(value); } if (argname == "zoom") { zoom = parseInt(value); } if (argname == "type") { // from the v3 documentation 8/24/2010 // HYBRID This map type displays a transparent layer of major streets on satellite images. // ROADMAP This map type displays a normal street map. // SATELLITE This map type displays satellite images. // TERRAIN This map type displays maps with physical features such as terrain and vegetation. if (value == "m") { maptype = google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP; • DotNetOpeId - Using OpenIdButton for Google Apps

    - by JediPotPie
I am an ASP.NET newbie and I am trying to design an OpenID/SSO system for an internal web application. The web application is pretty simple and the authentication is currently being managed by a database with usernames and passwords. I want to replace the existing accounts stored in the database with Google Apps accounts. I have downloaded the latest DotNetOpenAuth-3.4.3.10103 package and got the OpenIdRelyingPartyWebForms sample up and running on IIS. I have built my own login page using just a OpenIdButton object that points to a development Google domain. The button seems to work fine in FireFox, at least it is forwarding me to the Google Apps login, but nothing happens when I load the same page in IE. When I click the Google button, nothing happens, zip. The same is true for the Yahoo button in the login.aspx page given in the sample. Here is the .aspx code I am using... <rp:OpenIdButton runat="server" ImageUrl="http://www.google.com/accounts/google_transparent.gif" Text="Login with Google!" ID="googleLoginButton" Identifier="https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/site-xrds?hd=dev.connexcloud.com" />

  • Accessing Server-Side Data from Client Script: Using Ajax Web Services, Script References, and jQuery

Today's websites commonly exchange information between the browser and the web server using Ajax techniques. In a nutshell, the browser executes JavaScript code typically in response to the page loading or some user action. This JavaScript makes an asynchronous HTTP request to the server. The server processes this request and, perhaps, returns data that the browser can then seamlessly integrate into the web page. Typically, the information exchanged between the browser and server is serialized into JSON, an open, text-based serialization format that is both human-readable and platform independent. Adding such targeted, lightweight Ajax capabilities to your ASP.NET website requires two steps: first, you must create some mechanism on the server that accepts requests from client-side script and returns a JSON payload in response; second, you need to write JavaScript in your ASP.NET page to make an HTTP request to this service you created and to work with the returned results. This article series examines a variety of techniques for implementing such scenarios. In Part 1 we used an ASP.NET page and the JavaScriptSerializer class to create a server-side service. This service was called from the browser using the free, open-source jQuery JavaScript library. This article continues our examination of techniques for implementing lightweight Ajax scenarios in an ASP.NET website. Specifically, it examines how to create ASP.NET Ajax Web Services on the server-side and how to use both the ASP.NET Ajax Library and jQuery to consume them from the client-side. • Stupid Geek Tricks: Compare Your Browser’s Memory Usage with Google Chrome

    - by The Geek
Ever tried to figure out exactly how much memory Google Chrome or Internet Explorer is using? Since they each show up a bunch of times in Task Manager, it’s not so easy! Here’s the quick and easy way to compare them. Both Chrome and IE use multiple processes to isolate tabs from each other, to make sure that one tab doesn’t kill the whole browser. Firefox, on the other hand, just uses a single process for everything. Rather than pulling out a calculator and adding them all up, you can just open up Google Chrome, and type in about:memory into the location bar to see a full list of each browser’s memory usage.   On my test system with 6 GB of system RAM, I’m running the Development channel version of Chrome, and I’ve got about 40 different tabs open, which is why the memory usage is so high. Firefox has 8 tabs open, and IE is enjoying being opened for the first time in forever. Want to help cut down on memory usage and keep your Chrome browser running fast? Disable all unnecessary extensions, and then make sure you disable any plug-ins that you don’t need either. • shared hosting: ssl domain receives all server's ssl requests, google gets it wrong

    - by pixeline
This website is hosted on a shared server. I've recently had my hosting provider secure our website using SSL (https://domain.com instead of http://domain.com). Ever since then, all https requests sent to the server are redirected to my website. https://otherdomain.com leads to a warning, then, if you continue, to my website. Ok, my fault, i should have known SSL means 1 IP, otherwise, this thing can happen. But... Google Search results for my website's target keywords is now displaying these websites above my own, even though they have nothing even remotely related to the target keywords! already done: provide canonical url in the html page. told the problem to the server manager, who tells me it's normal but he'll look for a solution. This was one week ago, no answer since. I have no idea why Google is providing these https urls: i thought someone would have to submit them, or have them inside an html page in order for Google to actually index dummy https domains, but i see no reason why someone would do that. Any suggestion on how to solve this situation? Golive is in one week and SEO looks really bad because of that.

  • Weird entry for robots.txt on a Naked Domain in Google Webmaster Tools

    - by Metalshark
We own a .co.uk address and use an Internet hosting company that has made mistakes around DNS in the past. Our main site is hosted on www. and their reluctance to allow editing of AAAA records on-line means our naked domain does not resolve. Currently when we attempt to reach the naked version there is no entry for the browser to go to and it displays an unreachable page (nslookup just says Name: name of domain with no further entries such as an IP or Canonical Name). We recently added the relevant TXT records to verify us to view both the www. version and the naked version of the domain in Google Webmaster Tools (in anticipation of the requests to our Internet host coming to fruition). Imagine our shock when double checking the Site configuration Crawler access and finding a (admittedly failing) robots.txt with a dynamically generated HTML page (full of crude pop-up JavaScript) with references to 3 of our most prominent competitors. What could cause this to happen? As we are in the UK I am assuming some DNS server is serving Google bad information. We are going to contact the Internet hosting company to fix our A and AAAA records once and for all, then check that they work in the US (using something like OpenDNS). Should we be doing more though, for instance informing Google (through Webmaster Tools) that we are now aware there is something currently wrong with our naked domain? UPDATE: We have fixed our A records (not AAAA) and that has resolved the issue. But if there are further actions we should take for effectively having a parking page hosted on our active visitor-heavy, SEO-rich domain that advertised our competitors to US visitors, what would they be?

  • Google CDN or Akamai

    - by AlienWebguy
We combine and minify our JS with Minify - the combined JS is then cached on Akamai. I'm suggesting to my supervisor that we put JQuery and JQueryUI on Google CDN and take it out of our combined JS. The benefits I see are parallel downloads, significantly smaller Akamai cache hit, and the high potential the user will have JQuery from Google CDN cached in his/her browser when he/she visits our site so no download will be required at all. I also pointed out how pointing to the major version CDN URL //ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js will eliminate the need for us to micro-manage our JQuery version control, and that if a new release introduces a bug, we simply point the CDN URL to a stable minor version of our choice until the issue is resolved. My supervisor disagrees and thinks keeping it on Akamai is the way to go. Any insight as to which is going to be faster here? I looked for some benchmarks and references online but they are either out-dated or merely talk about Google wanting to acquire Akamai. EDIT: Some further research has pointed me to an article mentioning how 'latest version' CDN URL's use short expires headers so it might be more optimal to use /jquery/1.7/. I'm fine with this - the general question still remains.
