  • How to limit concurrent file access on a Samba share?

    I have a Ubuntu 12.04 file server running Samba. There are 6 windows machines that access the server, as well as two people that will occasionally access files remotely. The problem that I am having is that the CAD/CAM software we are using doesn't seem to request file locks, meaning if two people open a file at the same time, the first person to close the file will get their changes overwritten if the second person saves the file. I tried changing the smb.conf to strict locking = yes but this doesn't seem to have any effect. File locking with excel seems to work fine, so I know that Samba is using the file locks...if they were put on the file in the first place. Is there a way (either in Samba or Ubuntu) to only allow one user to have a file open at a time? If not does anyone have any suggestions for managing a problem like this?

    i want to start a file share server. i need help on how to get it started and running. i plan on using thing a lot and also maybe run a small web page from the server. plz help me figure out what i should install for packages. also the file share i would like to have a account login and stuff. also im running a 12.04 ubuntu server. it has a 1.4 gb of ram, with a 80gb harddrive (for now), and running a Pentium 4 possessor with like 1.2GHz not sure exactly but know it small.

  • Naming PCs on a mixed hosts home network.

    I have a home network comprising an Apple iMacs and a Windows 7 PCs - using the internet connection sharing feature on the Windows 7 PC to share the internet connection with the iMac. I have configured the hostnames on each pc so, running hostname on the Windows 7 box says "windows7" and on the iMac says "apple", but, if I try and "ping apple" from Windows 7 or "ping Windows7" from the iMac they can't resolve. what do I need to do to get this 'simple' level on connectivity working?

    i need to know if its possible to share a folder, so that i can open the files in it from ubuntu and windows at the time im using windows but im planning to move back to ubuntu but my problem would be losing some compatibility that windows offers me when im doing college work, and that can be a pain, so my plan is to dual boot and have both OS. but i dont want to be loging in and out of each OS in order to work or share files so is ther a way to share folders or files between, lets say, ubuntu 14.0 and windows 7?

  • Writing files to an Airport Extreme using afp

    Using Nautilus I can connect from Ubuntu 12.04 (64-bit) to my Apple Airport Extreme using user & password without a problem. I can read, browse folders and delete files. However I cannot write files, the file is created, but the contents of the file are not transferred. The transfer fails with the error message "kFPMiscErr" which I think means that "authentication has already been established" ?. I have tried the command line tools for access using AFP but these do not work either. Is there a solution to this problem ?

That didn't work for me either but it does if its an "application" shortcut. I'm trying here to execute "link" .desktop file, where you define in the type section (Type=Link) and (URL=smb://servername/sharefolder)

    Is an install of Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack license upgradeable? Suppose I'm able to install Windows 7 Home Premium on my computer using a Family Pack key. Would I then be able to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate using the Anytime Upgrade option? Considering that the Family Pack only uses one key to activate three PCs, what happens when I upgrade one of those computers with Anytime Upgrade? Would I be able to use the Anytime Upgrade key on all three computers? Or just one computer? Is upgrading this license key even possible?

  • Most basic, low power home surveillance system

    I am thinking of setting up a simple but effective surveillance system for my house that is: Very low powered (preferably no PCs left running out of stand-by mode) Cheap. When motion (or sound) is detected, I would like it to: Send an email/phone alert to me Record and upload video to the web (in case they steal the camera) So I imagine a system where I leave a netbook PC in stand-by mode and have it woken up by a motion detector. This initiates software to send alerts and periodically upload recorded video to the web. The software part is easy for me, but I'm not really a gadget-man so I'd like some advice on using a motion sensor of some sort to wake up the PC. Does anyone have some good advice?   • Security permissions for remote shared folders

    I have two servers running Windows Server 2003, and I want copy files from one server (A), programmatically with a windows service running under the Local System account, to a shared folder on the other (B). I keep getting "access denied" errors, and I can't figure out what security settings I need to set to open the shared folder for writing. This is what I've done on the recieving end: On A, right-click on the folder to share, choose the tab "Sharing" and select "Share this folder". Set a share name. Click "Permissions", add the group "Everyone" and give it full control. I tried choosing the "Security" tab to give some permissions there as well, but the "Add" dialog only finds local users, despite the fact that B shows up in the "Workgroup computers" dialog. After further inspection, this is the case also for the "Permissions" dialog under the "Sharing" tab (are they the same?).

  • pure-ftpd: one readonly/non-deletable file in home directory

    Is there a way to have a file in the user's FTP home directory without the ability to modify/remove it from that directory over FTP? So the user has write permissions on his own home folder, thus the ability to remove files. An exception should be made for a single file, which has the same filename and contents for each account. The solution I'm thinking of right now to run a periodic script to check the presence of that file, and if not, put it back. But I wonder whether there's a better solution than this.

    Hello, I need to install a program for my studies and, this program, need java to run. When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too. I like to have a graph view (e.g. as in Task Manager) but also nice are tool that lets me see what IP/port that's incoming/outgoing. Command line is fine. Or even some tutorial. Thanks. (am old unix sys admin and web app dev. Though not much of a network admin and don't know much Windows. I need this tool just for my home PC, not in any pro capacity.)

  • Restore Default OSX Home Folder Icons

    I want to keep folders such as Pictures and Documents in my home folder in sync between computers; at the moment, I'm using Dropbox to do this. On Computer A I added a symlink to the folders in my home directory to the Dropbox folder. On Computer B I deleted the existing Pictures and Documents folders and replaced them with symlinks to the folders in the Dropbox folder. This works very well, except that in Finder I don't see the nice little icons that Lion has by default for folders of a particular kind. Is there any way to restore these?

    Hello! At home we have a wireless router that my family want to use. We have our main computer physically connected to the router, and my laptop is connected wirelessly. When the network is like this then it is faultless. However, when my brother introduces is Apple MAC into the equation, both my laptop and the family machine gets all sorts of problems, primarily long load times and timeouts. The MAC, however, works fine. I think I've read something here or SF about a MAC continusly pinging a router which times it out, but I've not found any solution so far.     I installed MacPorts on OS X 10.5 and I found out that when I connect to the computer using SSH and use mc - Midnight Commander - the HOME and END keys do not work. I have to mention that I'm using putty and I am able to use the keyboard very well on Linux machines like Fedora, Ubuntu,... Here is putty keyboard configuration (a configuration I found to be optimal over time): Backspace key: 127 Home/End keys: Standard Function keys: Xterm R6 Cursor keys: Normal Numpad: normal Terminal type string: xterm-color I'm looking for a command line solution/script that does these changes, this make much easier to create a prepare OS script for configuring a new OS.

    Here's a crude representation of what I've got at home: floor 2 INTERNETS ---- MODEM/ROUTER ---- MY COMPUTER | floor 1 WIFI REPEATER ---- stuff | floor 0 more stuff TELEVISION Now, as part of our sat tv subscription we can get an additional service if we connect our decoder (located by TELEVISION obviously) to the internet. What they suggest is buying a Netgear 3DHD WIRELESS HOME THEATER NETWORKING KIT holy shit isn't my bullshit-o-meter flying high right now from the general buzzwordyness of this thing. What does this thing actually do that our existing wireless-enabled routers don't do? What's the point of having a third wifi router in the same house, this time only for one television? If I do decide to plunge €99 for this, should I connect it to the wifi repeater (which does not provide AAA quality internet, at least for all gaming purposes) or to my modem/router (risking issues with low signal?).

  • Failed pinging a LAN card of the server from the client using shared internet connection

    The server (Windows XP Pro SP3) has two LAN cards (LAN card A and B) and is connected to the internet using ADSL. The ADSL connection is shared to LAN card B using Internet Connection Sharing. The client (Windows XP Pro SP3) has one LAN card, and is connected to LAN card B of the server so that it has access to the internet. The IP address on the LAN cards are defined as follows: Server: LAN card A: 192.168.0.3/24 (manually defined by me) LAN card B: 192.168.0.1/24 (manually defined by Internet Connection Sharing) Client: LAN card: 192.168.0.123/24 (assigned by DHCP) Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 From the server, I can ping 192.168.0.123 successfully. From the client, it can access the internet without any problem. I can also ping 192.168.0.1 successfully but for 192.168.0.3, it failed with the Request Timeout error message. Why did the ping fail, and what should be done to make the ping possible? (all firewalls have been turned off.)

    I have 2 computers connected to a router and I have a DVB card in one of them. I want to use the one DVB card to feed both of them. I read about it and I know that I want to share the DVB adapter with the Internet Connection Sharing on the LAN network. But when I use the connection sharing, I lose my internet access I tried to use "Bridge Connection", but then I also lost my internet access too. Can any one tell me how to fix this problem? And how to view the channels (for example how to use the VLC)?

  • Macbook Pro keyboard with BootCamp - missing the Home/End/PageUp/PageDown keys

    Last year I converted from Windows to a MacBook Pro and went through the process of learning the ways of the Mac keyboard. In particular, I learned that Ctrl-left and Ctrl-right were the Mac way of doing Home and End. I'm now doing a project on Windows 7 on Bootcamp, and finding that I'm missing the Windows Home and End keys in a completely different way -- they don't exist, but the Mac combos don't work either. Any suggestions for getting this functionality somehow? Code editing is a real drag without these keys.

  • Cannot access Windows 7 share from Windows XP

    I have a new Windows 7 machine named PAP44 in the PAP workgroup. The networking is set to "Work" mode for the wired LAN. I have a couple of users and I've shared a folder and set it so both users can read/write. Confusingly for me, rather than sharing just that folder (as I'm used to with older versions of Windows) it appears to be sharing a path (\\pap44\users\...\myFolder) From another machine on the LAN, running XP, when I go to \\PAP44\Users I'm asked for a username and password, but neither of the usernames+passwords work. It just jumps back to the username and password dialogue, except that the username I entered gets prefixed with PAP44\ My end goal is to get my Debian/Ubuntu machines to be able to access this share, but first of all I thought I'd try to get it working in Windows, after all, that's supposed to be easy! Is there another step? (PS. I am not a "hit and run" case!)
