• Wifi as LAN - Is it possible ? How ?

  Hello ! Every one. I am having a query regarding WiFi network. I am having PC & LapTop. Now, Let me explain the situation. I requested My WiFi providers that I want connection in my PC. So that - WiFi provider set up an Antenna on my building Terrace - They joined a cable to pc & that Antenna. ( I think using RJ45 connector ) - The reason behind this - my pc is not having inbuilt wifi functionality. Now - almost laptops have inbuilt functionality. Now - On terrace there is wifi with superb speed. But on my flat - wifi comes with low speed. so, when ever I use internet on my pc - it has great speed - but my laptop works with low speed. The reason behind this - PC is catching wifi from terrace & laptop is catching the wifi from it's own place. Now, My question is something like this. Can we place an antenna or something like that & connect it to laptop for better wifi speed?   Mostly I still have that old 'ultraportable' laptop that is mostly like a pre-netbook era laptop and a friend and programmer needs a computer because the one he was using just broke and he has to wait until the new one arrive in 4-6 weeks ... This laptop has no LAN connection and CD-ROM so be prepared for a real challenge! All hardware is well supported on Windows XP (included drivers on the Windows XP CD) and on Linux out-of-the-box (but the screen need a special configuration.) Mostly any Linux that will work well with Skype (USB or regular headset), any MSN client and a text writer for code will do. What I have tested so far: Slitaz 2 don't boot because the floppy of GRUB4DOS don't see the USB drive (fully working and tested on my regular laptop), Damn Small Linux was working but was needing a special screen configuration that I don't remember (in the boot options of the floppy) and now I'm thinking about Puppy Linux that is seen to work totally out of the box with it but I will need an old Puppy version (1 or 2 I think) and the Wakepup floppy ... If you got some ideas to help or to try I'm open!

• Maxtor 500GB external hard drive not being detected but power is going to it?

  I have 2 * Maxtor Onetouch 4 Lite 500GB external hard drives (part no. 9NT2A4-500). They both used to work fine on my old laptop (an Acer) but I have not used them for about a year, since my laptop was stolen and I got this one (also an Acer [Aspire 7738G]). I have one plugged into the mains with one of the leads I believe was supplied with them. It appears to be receiving power as it is warm and the power light (on the unit itself) is on; also the mains adapter is fairly warm. I also have it plugged into my laptop with a USB lead which I have tested on my mp3 player (so I know it works). However my hard drive is not showing on my computer. I have tried checking for new hardware, installing the software that was supplied with it, checking drive letters in case it is registered as C: or something stupid, checking for problems etc... I can't find any cause for it to do this. It does appear to be starting up and, possibly, shutting down and restarting constantly (that's what it sounds like altho I can't be certain). I have had both hard drives stored in different places for the last year and they're both doing the same thing.. if it was only one then I'd guess it had got damaged or corrupted or something but since it is both I doubt this is it. The only things in common with both of them are the leads and the laptop, however I know the USB lead works and guess the mains lead works as there is power going to the unit. Has anyone come across this before or does anyone have any idea what the cause / solution to the problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Richard

• ASUS M51SE freezes for no apparent reason

  First of all, it's my first question on superuser so please excuse me if it doesn't belong here, a similar one has already been posted here or if I missed some details. My ASUS M51 freezes up. It all started a couple of months ago and I basically forgot about it since I bought a new laptop around that time. This is, however, bugging me since then and I can't explain why it's happening. Let me quickly describe what's wrong. When switched on and running (win 7) it freezes after a couple of minutes of normal usage (or even if I don't actually do anything). By 'freezes', I mean it's like a static image of my desktop was being displayed on the screen. Nothing happens, alt+ctrl+del doesn't help, I basically have to switch it off using a power button. I tried to remove the hard drive and to start the laptop without it. The same here - it freezes on the the initial black loading screen (a couple of minutes after the computer says it can't find the hdd) I tried to remove RAM - the same thing. All fans are spinning as they should. I cleaned the fans using a small paintbrush but it doesn't change anything. The laptop is generally clean and in pretty good physical shape. Well, almost, obviously :). One possible clue I can think of is that the laptop is heating excessively even when it doesn't actually do anything (hdd removed). Do you have any ideas what is the cause of this or what else can I try? Thanks, Piotr

• Need to have access to my office PC from my laptop hopping through two VPN servers

  Here's the illustration of what I have ( http://clip2net.com/s/2fvar ): My office PC with it's IP of 123.45.e.f. Office VPN, which I will connect to from my VPS to get to my office PC. My own VPS, which I use as a: client to connect to office VPN (through vpnc, which creates a tun0 with 123.45.c.d IP address); VPN server my laptop can connect to (OpenVPN, tun1, 10.8.0.1) My own laptop I will use as a VPN client to connect to VPS OpenVPN server (will create a tun0 with 10.8.0.2 IP address) Now what I have to do is to allow my laptop to connect to at least my office PC, but preferably to all the 123.45.x.x subnet. Please advice on how to best configure OpenVPN, routing, iptables or whatever else is needed on my VPS so that my laptop could gain access to my office PC. P.S. The reason I'm hopping through my VPS is that being connected to the office WiFi I cannot access my office PC and I cannot connect to office VPN (which is another way to access my office PC). The only way to access my PC from office WiFi I have is hopping though an outside network.

• Are there any custom keyboard available for laptops

  My work laptop is a HP elitebook 8560w which I mainly use for programming. Usually I have a external keyboard but recently I have been working out of office and therefore have been using the laptops own keyboard. One thing has really started to bug me. The keyboard layout of this 15.6" laptop contains numpad but the arrow keys are really bad (too small). Also when programming, I really miss a standard inverted T-arrow keys and the home/end/PgUp/PgDn buttons. Then it occurred to me; I would rather give up a numpad than a standard arrow keys. (The keyboard real estate in 15.6" laptop would allow this, and I really have to agree with Jeff Atwood here http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2009/02/have-keyboard-will-program.html) Which brings me to my question. Do any laptop manufacturers make custom keyboards for their laptops or is there some third party manufacturer who could supply these kind of special keyboards? Quick googling on this doesn't give any meaningful results. Looks like that I have to carry an external keyboard with me if someone here can't give any pointers.

• i7 Windows 7 laptop or Macbook Pro 15" (For making 3D model and Animation)

  Hi everyone, I'm thinking of buying a new laptop as my current one will be 5 years old next year and it currently gives me a blue screen everytime I run a heavy software to make 3D models and animation. Question is: Should I buy Macbook Pro or a Windows 7 laptop? I tried to research and some say that Windows would be better, especially because you can buy a very high spec laptop with cheaper price. While some other say Macbook Pro is the better choice as it can run bootcamp with windows 7 100% performance on every software even though it's a mac. Is this true? Which one is actually better? Btw, the software that I usually use is 3Ds Max, Maya, and ZBrush. To note as well, I have never used a Mac before. I've checked around some stores and budget wise, I'll need around AU$3000+ to buy a Macbook pro, and AU$2000+ to buy a windows laptop. Quite a big difference in price range. I'm only wondering if I would be able to hook the two screens I have with it, so I'd end up with three screens. I've seen people doing it to desktops, but am not sure the same could be accomplished with a laptop. My laptop is a sony vaio, and it's got both a VGA output, and an HDMI output. It'd be great is I could simply hook two screens to it, and have three independent screens (not mirrored). on my desktop, I have pretty much the same thing, but with an extra DVI port. I connect the DVI to one screen, and the VGA to an older one. Trying to connect anything to the HDMI simply mirrors whatever is on the DVI (I've tried it a long time ago) So I was wondering if with the laptop I'd be able to do it, and end up with three independent screens. I don't know if there's anything else I could be using instead (i.e. any extra hardware), so recommendations are more than welcome. Thanks in advance, Marcos

• Upgrading memory in a laptop

  I'm a bit confused about all the memory types and various bus frequencies of modern consumer PCs. Requesting expert help on the subject. So far I'm confident that: I have an Asus X51L laptop with an unknown set of configuration options. The CPU in there supports PAE, so I still have a chance to extend the memory beyond 3GiB; and the upper limit of the system is 8GiB. (?) The laptop has two SODIMM slots, one of which is occupied by a 2GiB bank, and the other one is empty. dmidecode and lshw tools consistently state 533 Mhz frequency of the bank. The last one confuses me the most. I failed to find out characteristics of the northbridge in this laptop, and still can't figure out what DDR2 to seek for. Is it DDR2-1066? Or, rather, PC2-8500/PC2-8600? Wouldn't a DDR2-800 bank harm the system's performance? Which kind of modules should I look up in stores? Update: I have bought a 2 GiB DDR2-800 SODIMM, and it seams that the system can't handle 4 GiB of memory. When installed by itself in either slot, both new and old bank (which btw happens to be marked GDDR2-677) work just perfectly; i.e. any configuration resulting in 2 GiB works. When both banks are installed though (totalling in 4 GiB), the memcheck86 tool produces horrible artifacts and crashes, and system reboots; an Ubuntu system can be started and even logged into a Unity session, but the system reboots too in this case from even a minor RAM load. So it's pretty obvious to me now that this laptop doesn't support 4 GiB of RAM or more.

• Trouble Downloading from some sites

  I am trying to download the new Microsoft Security Essentials but when I click on the Download button instead of getting the Download box popup nothing comes up. The progess bar at the bottom shows it doing something then when it reaches 100% nada. I can down load from HP (Drivers) and sites like Majorgeeks with no problem. I also have this problem on the Adobe download page when trying to get the shockwave and flash player. I am fixing my Granddaughters laptop that she got from someone else. There were over 26 Trojans listed on it when I installed AVG and they would not go away. I used CCleaner and HiJack This and deleted everything I could and wiped the freespace. Then ran AVG again and this time after finding a few Trojans and deleting them the system was reported as clean. IE8 then would not connect to the net so I used my computer to DL a copy and put it on the laptop, after that I was able to use the laptop to connect to the net and download a driver to get the sound working again. • How to change font size on display

  My laptop is Lenovo T400, whose screen size is 14.1 inches and default resolution is 1440 x 900. My main OS is Ubuntu 10.10. The default font size on the display is somehow small, which might contribute to the fatigue of my eyes. My previous laptop is Acer 5000, whose screen size is 15.4 inches and the default resolution is 1024 x 768. I like reading on my old laptop better than on my new one. Is it possible to change the setting of my new one to look like reading my old one? What are the parameters that control the font size? Are screen size, resolution part of them? In Windows, there are choices for font size, while in Ubuntu I haven't find out where I can change the setting and would like know if someone here knows about it. I also wonder if I can use a separate bigger display (perhaps just like a desktop display) as the display of my laptop, in case I don't want to enlarge font size at the cost of sacrificing the amount of the content to display, and how I shall do it? • My laptop causes the wireless router to stop working

  hello all, it's happening something strange to my wireless connection. The wireless connection works fine with all the devices at home, except with my laptop (Toshiba satellite, WIN 7 64): as I start it, the wireless network shuts off and the connection disappears also for the other devices. I can use internet only plugging the laptop with an ethernet cable, and I have to shut off the wireless card, to allow the other people in the house to use the wireless connection. I tried to update the firmware (it is a D-Link DIR 615) but it's up to date, and reconfigure the router, but all indicates that the problem is caused by my laptop. I'm currently doing an antivirus scanning, but the computer seems to be clean. Any suggestion?

• Re-Calibrate Toshiba battery meter with Windows 7

  I have a Toshiba U300 laptop. Back in the olden days (circa-2000) you could re-calibrate the battery meter from the BIOS when your battery was no longer reading accurately. My battery was shot, so I bought a brand new one, however Windows 7 still seems to count down the battery life in at the same speed as the old one did. This time, when it alleged 0%, I turned the laptop back on and got another 90 minutes of life out of it, at 0%. Is there a tool or utility for Toshiba laptops that can fix it back to being accurate? I've read the other threads on SU about cycling the battery but that just doesn't seem to do it in this case. Update: After the last cycle, the battery meter now reads 100% but the indicator on the front of the laptop is still orange (indicating not fully charged)

• Why does Ubuntu reset brightness settings at the loading screen?

  Since I first installed Ubuntu 11.10, I noticed that volume and screen brightness get reset every time Ubuntu starts. Why is this so? And what ways are there to keep brightness and volume levels after rebooting? I have found some scripts that change the screen-brightness at login. But this is not a good solution since login is slower because it seems to wait until the screen brightness is at the level specified by the script. After entering the password I see the screen brightness go down gradually. Only after this is complete (~1 or 2 seconds) does the background disappear and Unity come up. The screenbrightness is not remembered but instead redefined at login. So it gets remembered for the first part of the boot, then set to MAX and then again re-set to normal value by the script. My boot process is as follows: desired brightness: 2 (13,33%) / Max brightness: 15 (100%) Bios / brightness: OK GRUB (violet background color, white text) / brightness: OK Ubuntu loading screen with the dots / brightness: MAX (win7 loads with OK-brightness) User Login / brightness: MAX Unity starts / brightness: OK It seems to be more like a temporary patch than a actual solution. I'm looking for solutions that set the desired brightness permanently and consistently throughout the whole boot-process After updating to 12.04 the behavior is the same. I tried setpci -s 02:00.0 F4.B=XX The value of F4.B is always '0' regardless of what value I try to set it to (tried 0, ff, f, 5, etc) The solution in this answer does not have any noticeable effect: Desktop doesn't remember brightness settings after a reboot The variables at /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/ get changed if I use Fn+UP and Fn+DOWN Any help is appreciated. • Disable laptop screen

  I recently had the display fail on my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. I currently have my TV hooked up to the laptop's S-Video out which works fine as long as I'm running in Windows. For the first minute or so when the computer is booting I get no display. I was wondering if there was any way to disable the laptop screen entirely so that the TV display is active from the beginning (not just after Windows loads). I realize there may be a BIOS setting for this, my only problem is I can't see the BIOS settings screen since no display is active at that point so if anyone has any BIOS setting solutions I'd need the exact keystrokes to hit :)

• Why no "da-doomp" (disconnect notification sound) sometimes when unplugging wireless mouse receiver?

  Sometimes (maybe one case in 3), when I unplug the wireless mouse receiver on my Sony VGN-CS215J laptop, there is no "da-doomp" sound, even after a minute or two. And if I plug the receiver back in there is no corresponding "du-dump" sound and the mouse is still (immediately) "live". This can happen when the activity light is out and there's nothing obviously going on -- it's not simply that the box is too busy. Other times one gets the expected behavior (and usually I get the correct behavior if I plug the receiver back in a few seconds and then unplug it after a "failure"). The reason this is significant is that if I get no "da-doomp" then the laptop will not sleep properly -- it will go to sleep initially, but then reawaken a few minutes later inside my laptop case and proceed to run the battery down (and no doubt overheat the unit). Any ideas?

• How can I install CentOS without a keyboard, mouse, or monitor?

  I will be buying a new computer which will be used as a CentOS server. I will put it on my home LAN, and once it is set up, will access it only through SSH. I don't want to spend a lot of money (maybe $500), and I don't want to buy another monitor or keyboard just to through them away after the server is setup. My question is how do I access the computer without a keyboard and monitor when I install the operating system? For media, I can use either the DVD or an ISO on the USB, so am good there. But how do I see what I am doing and enter commands without a monitor or keyboard? I have a Window 7 laptop, an XP laptop, and a CentOS laptop. Can I use one of my laptops to act as the MMI (Man Machine Interface)? If not, what is the easiest and least expensive option? Thank you
