• Losing connection to server from several computers

  I have a PostgreSQL server running Oracle Linux. In my network I have several workstations each running different OS (Fedora, Ubuntu, Windows). Every once in a while I lose connection from the several workstations to the server while other workstations can connect with no problem. If I do service network restart from the server the problem is solved and everyone can work until the next time it returns. Any clues? Thank you, Ben.

I can think of some reasons: Lack of game developers with expertice in Java Lack of good game development frameworks Programmers don't want to accept Java as a games programming language. Most only accept C++ as that? No support for game consoles (though the PC market still exists) It could of course be something else. Could someone who knows the business better than me explain why Java isn't getting momentum when it comes to game development?

  I'd like someone to enlighten me as to what exactly goes on with aptitude when I want a kernel. As we all know, there's pretty much the following kernel option: linux-image-generic linux-image-server linux-image-virtual This morning I did an install and it had linux-image-generic on it, so I ran the following: apt-get -y remove linux-image-* This removed all my kernels as expected, I followed suit with running: apt-get install linux-image-virtual Says I've installed linux-image-server!? Am I missing something here, because I checked twice and it did it twice, however if I manually select a kernel (in my instance I used: linux-image-2.6.35-30-virtual) it will install linux-image-virtual. This seems rather strange to me? Details: Running Ubuntu 9.10 Am I missing something? :)

  Hi, i'm looking for metrics/standards/normatives to evaluate a given "Software Development Process". I'm NOT looking to evaluate the SOFTWARE itself (trough SQUARE and such), i'm trying to evaluate software development PROCESS. So, my question is if you could give me some pointers to find this standard, considering that "evaluation objetives" would be documentation quality, how good is the customer relation, how efective is the process, etc. Very much like a ISO 9000, and like CMMI on a sense, but much lightweight and concrete and process oriented, not company oriented. I have learned the basics of HTML/CSS/PHP/JS/phpmyadmin Now, I was looking to a write a website for purchasing and selling products for clients and sellers. I was wondering what other languages I would need to learn and also what kinda development tools I should use. Also, what would be the best type of language to write a website like this. I have heard that I should be using python for this type of web development. Do you guys have any suggestion as to what I should be looking at? • Why is web app development path in Java this much confusing? [closed]

  I'm currently a .net web developer and I really like to switch to Java. I've used JSP about 7 years ago to develop and deploy a small web application on a JRUN app server. But after 7 years that I like to return back to Java, I can't find the clue. There are many web development frameworks that exist in Java world and each of them has fans that recommand it. There are extensions that sit above jvm for web development (like jRuby i think). I am confused and I do not know where to start the path of learning java web development. I do not want to focus on custom tailor-made approaches and want to remain on the basic path of developing with standard tools and methods and deploy them into standard app servers. (For example some says do not use EJBs, some says focus on MVC facilities like JSF. I'm confused and I do not know the path that i should go on)

• Starting small custom development company, type of niches to target?

  This is kind of a new years thing for me as I want to be more entrepreneurial going forward with programming and this is kind of a general question for anyone who may share the same ambitions as me. I have experience with web programming and, although I work full time for a company doing programming, I have some freelance programmers that I work with / employ for small projects. I want to see about taking things to the next level as far as building a small company doing custom development. I'm just not sure how to figure out what niches to target as far as what type of apps to build as demos, etc. I was thinking mobile (maybe Android or Iphone) but am just curious if anyone has any advice / resources. A lot of "web development" seems to end up being just using a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, for smaller sites, so I want to figure a way to steer clear of this crowd and find some opportunity with companies / entrepreneurs who actually need real programming development done to build apps.   I do my php web development locally, as in, creating a local instance of a site and then coding it and then pushing code to servers via git/github. I'm considering getting an android tablet or ipad and a wireless keyboard for very mobile development, but I in no way want to go back to the bad old days of using ftp and syncing up code changes on a development server directly, that would be too much of a trade-off to interest me.   I've recently been put on heavy JavaScript projects and have become fond of the front-end world in comparison to the back-end. I have always been good at proper markup and CSS, and coupled with AJAX, pretty animations, and dynamically generated content, it's become a much more interesting and flashy world for me. I would like to be able to continue to hone my craft in the same way that I was able to become proficient at back-end development with PHP: getting paid to do it. How would I market myself as a front-end web developer with a strong interest in dynamic JavaScript-driven websites? Due to my strong background in back-end development, how would I find the companies that wouldn't waste my front-end skill set on simple HTML/CSS development? And as a bonus, how would I apply this to being a contractor/freelance developer rather than a salaried employee? While I like the idea of being able to remain a part of my creations, I also dislike the maintenance phase of projects.

  I'm in the middle of co-producing a "development approach" document for off-shore resources as they ramp up onto our project. The most recent (similar) document our company has used is over 80 pages, and that does not include coding standards/conventions documents. My concern is that this document will not be consumable and will therefore fail. What should be in a development approach document? Are there any decent guidelines on this topic? • Effective way of keeping past projects with their working development environment?

  I find that whenever I want to go run a past project, it will take a long time before I can find it and before I have everything set-up again for it to be able to run. For example, I have python projects I created in Linux, and it depends on software packages that are easily installed in Linux, yet I no longer have the Linux VM I was using. And some of my other projects depend on other variables like web server configuration, PATH variables, sdk, IDE, OS version, device, etc. Does someone have an effective way of handling this issue? As of now I have only concerned myself with keeping the source code backed up yet it is difficult re-establish the working development environment and it is also difficult to keep the working development environment around as well.

• Dual-screen Multimedia Control Suite for Linux (like Screen Monkey)

  I'm looking for some linux software to manage and control a dual monitor/multi screen setup for use in professional-like presentations (ie: monitor1=control, monitor2=projector/audience). I have the dual-monitor configured with my gnome desktop running over both monitors (that's the easy part). What I'm looking for is a neat/seamless way to switch between, say, OpenOffice Impress, DVD Player, VLC live video, Lyricue, other software on monitor2. To have monitor2 shown to the audience and run neat presentations of DVDs, Slideshows, etc. whilst controlling it from monitor1. I can run slideshows, play a DVD on monitor2 (drag & drop VLC on monitor2, and go fullscreen) etc. but this is rather messy in a presentation environment. I found this software: Screen Monkey. Looks like an excellent windows equivalent for what I want to do. Is there anything similar for linux? For Gnome, KDE, anything else X based? Thanks, SamJ

• My linux server time and log files are not the same

  Hi i have installed NTP on my linux server and i am getting my clock from a 6500 core switch, everything is working fine. When i ssh to a switch i have it all sent to a log file on the linux server, this log file does not time stamp with the same time as i have on the server. the date and hwclock are the same. But my my is exatly 6 hours behind my date on the server wich is CET. Has annyone have that same problem ? bedst regards Martin

  How do i disable the linux file cache on a xfs partition (both read an write). We have a xfs partition over a hardware RAID that stores our RAW HD Video. Most of the shoots are 50-300gb each so the linux cache has a hit-rate of 0.001%. I have tryed the sync option but it still fills up the cache when copinging the files. ( about 30x over per shoot :P ) /etc/fstab: /dev/sdb1 /video xfs sync,noatime,nodiratime,logbufs=8 0 1 Im running debian lenny if it helps.

  I am new to Linux and trying to set up a server. For this project I need some additional software, but how to install the software I'm interested in is not always obvious. For example, this was my experience with a PHP package called htscanner: There is no installation guide on the website. The website says that the version I used did not have any dependencies, but this is incorrect. "Release 0.8.1: No dependencies registered." There is no configuration guide on the website. After I managed to get it installed it still didn't work. I decided to just uninstall it and find a better solution. Uninstalling isn't straightforward; the best answer I got is to manually look for the files and delete them. What are the basic concepts of installing and uninstalling software on Linux? How is this supposed to work?

"import ppm:- | gocr -i - | xclip -selection c" works, but gocr is unreliable: simple text on a webpage has errors. It is a clear font but the OCR tool always misses "r" and replaces it with underscore. • Hardware selection for Linux machine

  Hi, I am building a new box, and planning to install Ubuntu 9-04 or Ubuntu 9-10 on it. I am wary of the hardware selection because in the past I struggled with lack of drivers or driver incompatibility with the network card and video card, etc. The last time I built a Linux box was 2007, and I have not kept up to date with the changes since.   Hi, I am trying to set up port forwarding on a linux box to a IIS webserver on my internal network. The web server sits on Windows 2003 Server. My linux box has eth0 - Internet connection eth1 - internal subnet (10.10.10.x) eth2 - 2nd internal subnet (129.168.0.x) dhcp interface my webserver is on the eth2 interface (192.168.0.6) I am doing port forwarding for port 80 with no avail. I use the same set of rules to port forward to a different webserver and it works.
